03:37 ckonstanski I have a saltstack that write a whole lot of files to the filesystem as owner root, group root. This runs in linux. I want to make it work on a mac as well. But there is no group root. gid 0 on a mac is wheel. Is there a super sneaky way around this? Like renaming the wheel group to root on the mac?
03:38 ckonstanski I suppose I could put the group name in a pillar variable.
03:43 sh123124213 joined #salt
03:46 ckonstanski Is there a uid and gid that can be used in place of user and group in a file state? For root it is always 0:0.
04:15 nkuttler ckonstanski: sounds more like a case for a map https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/best_practices.html#modularity-within-states
04:15 nkuttler about macs, no idea
04:21 MTecknology ckonstanski: I feel pretty confident I've just used the number in the past and had no issues. Did you try it?

06:56 jsmith0012_ salt for windows.   when creating an account. is there a way to get windows to generate the appropriate registry keys and directory's that happens on a first time log in?
06:59 masber joined #salt
07:02 zer0def would AD be preferred here?
07:02 jsmith0012_ no. sadly not.
07:03 zer0def oof
07:04 jsmith0012_ making a local account for various things some of the apps i am needed to run remotely that require registry keys
07:04 zer0def couldn't you provision necessary things as part of salt's state run after those accounts are created, then?
07:07 jsmith0012_ not sure how?  salt and windows is new to me
07:08 zer0def https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/ lists a plethora of `win_` prefixed state modules, perhaps they'd be of some use?
07:09 jsmith0012_ ooohhh a win SNMP state.  ill look into that one later
07:10 zer0def i remember seeing registry-related state modules at some point, not sure where are they hiding now
07:10 jsmith0012_ i found that one.  making registry keys is not a issue.. but i would need to add the keys to the HKEY_USERS under the uuid of the user i just created.
07:11 jsmith0012_ was hoping not to have to generate the entire node from the ground up.
07:12 jsmith0012_ (grumble grumble hate windows)
07:12 zer0def care to point me where you found that one? from my pov, i'd say those keys ought to be generated the moment a user is created on the local system
07:13 jsmith0012_ https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/states/all/salt.states.reg.html
07:14 jsmith0012_ so i created a new user on my test system.  it created a uid of S-1-5-21-51527676-1559786323-2202763354-1004  when i look in the registry under HKEY_USERS there is nothing there
07:15 jsmith0012_ if i log in as that user on the machine. then it gets created
07:16 zer0def i wouldn't know anything about it, never needed to admin windows
07:16 zer0def with salt, that is
07:17 jsmith0012_ wish i did not either :)
07:18 zer0def perhaps the value's created somewhere you didn't inted it to? have you reviewed the logs and/or changes report something that would provide pointers?
07:18 jsmith0012_ the issue is that i need to run cmd.run as a user. on windows you need to provide a password to salt.  Linux you do not.

07:19 MTecknology it sounds like you're dealing with some exceptionally terrible software
07:19 jsmith0012_ putty...
07:20 jsmith0012_ rather plink.exe
07:20 MTecknology perhaps cygwin would be more sane?
07:20 MTecknology or unxutils?
07:20 jsmith0012_ that is a good idea.

08:03 zer0def windows is dire software to begin with, even mingw has a bunch of things ordinarily raising an eyebrow

08:17 MTecknology as soon as windows or mac needs to be managed, sane solutions start going out the window.

18:31 XenophonF hey if you're running salt built from a recent ports tree, you might be hitting this packaging bug
18:31 XenophonF https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=226548
18:32 XenophonF apply the attached patch to fix the tornado dependency
18:33 XenophonF or wait a little bit - the maintainer approved the patch today, so it should be available via portsnap RSN

23:24 rjc I've been trying to set up highstate scheduling https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/jobs/#scheduling-highstates
23:24 rjc but whatever I put in (20 minutes), highstate is being run every 60 minutes
23:24 rjc what gives?
23:29 KingJ joined #salt
23:54 MTecknology rjc: based on the details provided, the only logical guess is that you made a typo or did something else wrong.
