16:54 jsmith0012 is it possible to a file state that deletes a directory and keeps it gone?  i  been reading the doc but cant figure out how to write the state.

17:24 rahav hi
17:24 rahav i have a 3k node setup
17:25 rahav after all minions are up i can see there are 3k persistent conecntions to port 4505
17:25 rahav however when i send commands from master to a minion
17:26 rahav the command reports that minion is not responding
17:26 rahav however when i ping the master from minion it works via salt-call
17:27 MTecknology rahav: are you setting a batch size?
17:28 MTecknology If not, 3,000 connections all trying to send data at the same time sounds like a good recipe for plugging up a pipe.

17:34 Linuturk joined #salt
17:35 aphor How exactly does the pipe get plugged? Talking about failure modes is always good stuff.
17:37 aphor @jsmith0012 the states all compile down to a list of steps (calle "low chunks"), and its always possible to recreate a directory with a latter one after a former one removed it.
17:45 rahav im trying to ping a specific minion here. say minion-100
17:45 rahav salt \minion-100 test.ping
17:45 MTecknology aphor: if all minions respond at the same time with 1MB of data each, that's 3,000 MB of data. If your minion is on a 100mbit pipe, that's gonna get plugged
17:47 aphor @MTecknology: You mean the master is on a 100mbps pipe?
17:49 MTecknology correct
17:53 aphor @rahav how fast is your network?
17:55 aphor sudo lsof -i tcp:4506
17:55 aphor from the master
17:56 rahav when i restart the minion, it seems to respond to commands from the master
17:56 xet7 joined #salt
17:57 aphor the returner socket gets closed, and all buffered, un-acknowledged data gets flushed when you restart the minion.
17:57 aphor The new process gets a new connection, and isn't feeling encumbered by all the old junk it was waiting for the master to acknowledge.
17:59 rahav how would i be able to figure out, the cause of error, when a minion that is not responding to command from master
17:59 rahav in this case where you mentioned "waiting for master to acknowledge"
18:00 rahav can you  share more details
18:00 jsmith0012 you could also increase the time out by adding -t 180 .  i have had to do this on windows minions because.... windows.
18:08 aphor @rahav: start by increasing the timeout like @jsmith0012 said, but also consider you may need more time for the master to process all of the return data from all of the minions.
18:10 indistylo joined #salt
18:10 aphor How much data do the minions need to return to the master each, times how many minions, divided by your network throughput (under congestion), plus a fraction for variance.
18:10 aphor That's what you need the timeout to be.
18:10 andi- joined #salt
18:16 rahav my current config is using zero mq. how good is the TCP transport
18:18 justanotheruser joined #salt
18:18 aphor rahav: TCP may be more appropriate for extreme concurrency like your case.
18:22 aphor https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/transports/tcp.html <-- TCP will "send all publishes to all minions and rely on minion-side filtering"
18:32 aphor AHA: here are the slides https://www.slideshare.net/ThomasJackson4/saltconf-2016-salt-stack-transport-and-concurrency
18:32 tiwula joined #salt
18:35 rahav aphor: thanks for that
18:36 aldevar joined #salt
18:37 aphor @rahav: YW. I think TCP is worth a try for you because for one thing, I think it will make troubleshooting simpler. The opposite is usually the case for smaller systems..

19:15 MTecknology jsmith0012: I've had to do that for rpi2 because it took so long to complete, but rpi3 did away with the problem
19:17 jsmith0012 yea the rpi3 was a big upgrade.  i have a shipment of the new rpi3+ coming in soon.
19:17 jsmith0012 should be fun to see what kind of improvements they made.

19:55 viq rahav: another thing to look at is firewalls in the way - some tend to drop sessions for connections that haven't been active in a while
20:05 jsmith0012 rahav: it should be noted that even if the salt command times out that it dose not mean the command did not successfully run on the minion. all you know is the connection timed out.
20:06 jsmith0012 if you get a minion did not respond it may just be too overloaded to. if you get a minion not connected then it most likely never got the command.
20:07 jsmith0012 and by overloaded it could be internet, or minion, or master overload.
