05:04 Eric_TheITGuy Hey all
05:05 Eric_TheITGuy So, quick question, im sure will be easily answered. I am trying to setup libvirt so I can use virt.init. I need to change the default disk profile, but it looks to be a dictionary in salt and not an SLS file.
05:05 Eric_TheITGuy Is that right?
05:11 Eric_TheITGuy The crux of my question is how to I modify the output of sudo salt '*' virt.get_profiles?

13:38 mocak is there a comparison matrix between Salt open and Salt enterprise?
13:40 onslack <gtmanfred> yes
13:40 onslack <gtmanfred> so, salt enterprise can do everything open can do, it just adds extra stuff onto the top
13:41 onslack <gtmanfred> let me see if I can find it, i know we have a table at least that lists differences

13:46 onslack <psi-jack> Heh, some day when you have time to tinker, you should try to replace slack emoji with noto emoji for IRC. ehhe
13:47 onslack <gtmanfred> so, it does some
13:47 onslack <psi-jack> Ohh.
13:47 onslack <gtmanfred> lemme show you where to add them
13:47 onslack <gtmanfred> <https://github.com/gawel/irc3/blob/master/irc3/plugins/slack.py#L46>
13:47 babilen The bridge does not appear to support them
13:48 onslack <gtmanfred> o:)
13:48 gtmanfred that one did
13:48 gtmanfred i have to manually add them to a list of emojis in the slack plugin to irc3
13:48 onslack <psi-jack> Aha.. But you know you could replace them with noto emoji. Granted it would depend on people in IRC having the noto fonts, depends, which is the lesser evil Is uppose.
13:49 onslack <gtmanfred> ah, maybe
13:49 babilen Well, either generate proper unicode symbols or just use standard smileys
13:50 gtmanfred mocak: the best explaination I got was The shortest way to explain it is that enterprise is a management layer that sits on top of open that allows for unified control of multiple masters arranged horizontally (instead of vertically like they would be with syndics) and allows for a single API entry point.
13:50 gtmanfred Also, there is a GUI.
13:53 gtmanfred mocak: also https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kdW3wB_gLmmg6F42Gs45yQ6kZesoS8rw/view?usp=sharing
13:55 babilen I take it that it's still impossible to get the software without costly "Enterprise" support?

16:58 Psi-Jack wut? But.. Why? heh
16:59 rcvu haha I know but it's part of some end to end testing
16:59 rcvu which includes downloading and setting up a mirror repo of all our dependencies
16:59 Psi-Jack I'd say that's the bigger problem is /that/ personally. I'm sure you get that as well. :)
16:59 rcvu To test offline install test cases
17:00 Psi-Jack test-kitchen makes for a great testing platform if you're not already using it.
17:04 rcvu Interesting. It looks like what I am using salt/salt-cloud to do now
17:05 Psi-Jack Yeah, as I move more to using salt formulas, but this I'm sure can also be done on existing states with a proper kitchen setup applied, I'm running full integration tests for each state and verifying it.
17:05 Psi-Jack Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Integration Testing.
17:10 rcvu yeah that's what I'm (eventually) trying to get to with Integrating testing included

19:25 onslack <gtmanfred> sure, use a compound match for * and not minion id

20:16 rsyring I'm new to Salt, coming from using Ansible extensively for years.  I've read a lot of the docs and I'm about to get started.  One thing is unclear to me: with Ansible, I've got my playbooks on my local dev machine and they run from there.  So, to iterate, I simply change the file locally and then run Ansible.  In salt, my local dev machine is not the salt master.  Is there a best practice for "pushing" the configuration files up to t
20:17 K0HAX joined #salt
20:17 rsyring I'm ready for my configuration changes to be applied by the minions?
20:17 rsyring Seems like it might be nice to have a salt master watching a git repo and automatically applying anything merged to the master branch.
20:17 rsyring Other options?
20:18 onslack <gtmanfred> you can use /srv/salt on the master
20:18 onslack <gtmanfred> or you could use a git repo
20:18 onslack <gtmanfred> and gitfs
20:18 onslack <gtmanfred> you can do all that with salt-api + git webhooks
20:18 onslack <gtmanfred> Here is an example of that with masterless minion <https://blog.gtmanfred.com/masterless-reactor.html>

20:40 XenophonF randy.syring: if you look at the commit history for my Salt States repo (https://github.com/irtnog/salt-states/commits/development), you'll see a lot of "oops, that broke, gotta fix it" commits
20:40 XenophonF I could rebase but I don't care about having a perfect commit history.
20:41 XenophonF so my workflow is "push a change to the dev branch, wait 60 seconds (or manually run `fileserver.update` if I'm impatient), and state.apply it"

20:55 onslack <gtmanfred> hrm actually
20:55 onslack <gtmanfred> i am not sure
20:55 onslack <gtmanfred> because I could see you being able to get something on the minion box instead
20:55 onslack <gtmanfred> test and see?
20:56 pcn I think when I've done this in the past with states, I can get files relative to the file server root, but I'm  not sure how that works with pillars
20:57 onslack <gtmanfred> well it would be on the master
20:57 pcn So I can try, but I'm thinking that the process there is something worthy of docs.
20:57 onslack <gtmanfred> so it should be in the pillar root
20:57 onslack <gtmanfred> prs for docs welcome

20:59 pcn What puzzles me is whether it should be able to get from other pillar roots/file roots depending on the context.  I just don't have time for a code dive at the moment to understand that.
20:59 onslack <gtmanfred> i am pretty sure it is just contained in that pillar/file root
20:59 onslack <gtmanfred> because we do not allow using `..` to prevent from breaking out of the root
