14:50 wannabe o :( nother earthquake in japan
14:51 BatSteve How big?
14:51 wannabe 7.4
14:51 mikemol http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usc0002ksa.php
14:52 mikemol http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Maps/region/Asia.php
14:52 mikemol How big was that first one?
14:53 _Trev_ tsunami warning once again
14:53 mikemol http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/shakemap/global/shake/c0002ksa/
14:54 BatSteve the first one was 7.9 I believe
14:54 _Trev_ so a 7.4 is between 'strong' and 'major'
14:54 BatSteve I would say so, yes
14:55 _Trev_ some what less enegretic than 7.9 though since the scale is exponential
14:55 mikemol This one's closer to Fushikoma, IIRC.
14:55 mikemol Anyone have a link to the USGS report to that first one?
14:55 BatSteve Hum. Apparently I was incorrect, the original trigger earthquake that set off all the others seems to be listed as 9.0
14:56 BatSteve http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/2011/usc0001xgp/
14:56 wannabe i have a friend in japan, he updates about all this and he updated before the news sattions did :P
14:57 _Trev_ 9.0 seems unlikely
14:57 _Trev_ that would be near total devistation
14:57 mikemol _Trev_: It was farther out to sea.
14:57 BatSteve I know next to nothing about earthquakes, but that's what the page says.
14:58 mikemol Compare: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/shakemap/global/shake/c0001xgp/ http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/shakemap/global/shake/c0002ksa/
15:01 _Trev_ damn
15:01 _Trev_ http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/shakemap/list.php?y=2011
15:01 _Trev_ search for japan there
15:01 _Trev_ and you get some idea of how many aftershocks there have been
15:02 mikemol Just sort by magnitude, and you get a more interesting picture.
15:08 _Trev_ Essentially, I no longer want to live in japan
15:09 _Trev_ Hopefully they don't get another wave. Doesn't seem like this last event was much stronger than the other aftershocks so hopefully they will be ok.

16:26 cctoide pretty sure that's just a substation/transformer dying, though
16:32 mikemol We had a substation fail over here in Jenison last night.
16:33 mikemol Nice big boom sound, power went out for about five seconds, came back. About a half hour later, no audible boom, but power was out from Chicago Dr/28th down through 44th and 8th ave.
16:34 mikemol Power came back along Chicago Dr/28th to Chicago Dr/196 about twenty minutes later, but it was a few hours before pwer came back to the rest of the outage area including my apartment and place of employment.
16:34 mikemol I saw no fire damage at our substation, though. Only Consumers Energy trucks.

17:03 _Trev_ I would love to see an interactive simulation of a cascading power failure like that
17:05 cctoide look up other outages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_power_outages
17:05 _Trev_ http://www.musicradio77.com/images/ing11-9-65blackout.mp3
17:05 _Trev_ check this out
17:05 mikemol Shouldn't be too hard to build one, actually.
17:05 cctoide most articles have a breakdown of the causes, fairly interesting read
17:05 _Trev_ mp3 of a radio broadcast during the start of the blackout
17:06 mikemol You could even use real circuit breakers designed to trip at something small like 500mA to 1A.
17:06 _Trev_ the tape playback slows down as the power changes mhz
17:06 mikemol Use something like 5V, and kids could walk up and poke around at it.
17:06 _Trev_ form 60 down to 56 and then 51
17:07 _Trev_ yeah that would be cool mike
17:07 mikemol Heh. You should put a link to that mp3 on the wiki page; they've got "citation needed" all around that.
17:07 _Trev_ that mp3 is in the footnotes on the wiki
17:08 cctoide how would you interface with the simulation and make it trip? potentiometer?
17:08 mikemol I was thinking flipping on a bunch of LEDs.
17:09 mikemol So you can see each LED as a 'consumer' on the grid.
17:09 mikemol And when the power goes out, the LEDs all go dark.
17:09 cctoide ah, yeah
17:10 _Trev_ I was picturing a computer program something like conways game of life, heh
17:10 _Trev_ but something pysical would be awesome
17:10 mikemol Software's so easy that it's getting to feel meaningless.
17:11 cctoide software was my first thought too since I'm on the other side of the world :p
17:11 mikemol Well, you could make it web-controlled. :)
17:12 mikemol Then use a webcam to show the board and hear the clicks as relays trip.
17:13 mikemol Hm.
17:13 mikemol You might even be able to use standard circuit breakers, just crank the voltage down.
17:13 mikemol Breakers trip on current, not power. :)
17:14 mikemol Though that makes it a bit more difficult to web-control. :)
17:14 _Trev_ that would be pretty cool
17:14 _Trev_ how would you reset it?
17:14 mikemol Flip the breaker manually. Like I said, that'd make it a bit more difficult to web-control.
17:15 _Trev_ make fuses from strands of steel wool so you can see stuff burn up :P :D
17:15 _Trev_ hehe
17:15 cctoide have it set off thumper when it trips for dramatic effect :P
17:15 mikemol Nah; we're still talking real fire hazard, even at the low voltage.
17:16 mikemol cctoide: Lol
17:16 _Trev_ yeah no doubt
17:16 _Trev_ I have started a few campfires that way
17:16 mikemol When I was a kid, I burned myself with narrow-gauge wire and a 9V battery while I was taking apart a cheap Radio Shack RC car.
17:17 mikemol Nothing serious; just 1st degree on the pads of forefinger and thumb...but a worthwhile experience and reminder.
17:17 _Trev_ when I was a kid, I blew up a radio because I had the smart idea of using an old power cord as an antenna, which worked great will I plugged the antenna into the wall >.>
17:17 mikemol Heh
17:18 mikemol I learned to remember to unplug my tools by having a soldering iron roll down my back.
17:18 _Trev_ youch
17:19 _Trev_ I became much more respectful of power tools after my first few months working at the machine shop
17:19 mikemol On a related note, don't _ever_ put me in an electric buzz chair unless you want a very powerful, motive and potentially dangerous reaction...
17:19 _Trev_ haha
17:19 _Trev_ I don't think I would want to do that to anybody
17:19 mikemol My bio-dad found a stool rigged with what I guess was a transformer and plugged into the wall.
17:20 mikemol He thought he'd play a prank on me by having me sit on it as he reached underneath and flipped a switch.
17:20 mikemol I'm guessing it was built to not be particularly dangerous, but the soldering iron felt exactly the same way. (I remember the buzz-shock more than the burn and heat)
17:21 mikemol Wound up with an 11-year-old bawling kid on his hands...
17:21 _Trev_ yikes
17:21 _Trev_ no fun
17:22 mikemol ya. So don't put me in a seat like that unless you want me to sock you. :)
17:22 _Trev_ that crap would probably stop my heart, heh.
17:22 mikemol Across the right part of the body, and at sufficient current, possibly. I'm guessing this thing had a current limiter on it of some sort, and it was only across the tush.
17:23 mikemol Though my bio-dad discovered it by supporting his weight with a hand on the stool when he flipped the switch...
17:24 _Trev_ lol
17:25 _Trev_ yep, that could easily put the current path right across the chest
17:25 _Trev_ eh, i guess not though
17:26 _Trev_ must be there were two contact points on the seat or something?
17:26 _Trev_ so rule of thumb, dont sit on a chair with two nails sticking up out of it
17:26 mikemol It had something like window screen on it. I'm guessing the electrodes were attached on either side.
17:27 _Trev_ interesting
17:28 _Trev_ In other news, Numbers sations are creepy
17:28 _Trev_ stations*
17:29 BatSteve You're the second person who's mentioned numbers stations
17:29 BatSteve (to me at least)
17:29 mikemol If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, I read of them a few years ago.
17:30 mikemol I think the popular thought of them is that they're some kind of spy thing, but that wouldn't make sense any more.
17:30 mikemol More likely, it's guys playing pranks once in a while playing copy-cat to further a spooky pattern.
17:30 _Trev_ Initially, I thought it would not make sense either
17:30 _Trev_ but then I realised that
17:32 _Trev_ it still represents an easy way to transmit info to somebody without the person receiving the info having to 'do' anything that might expose them
17:32 cctoide They're still going, and a couple of broadcasts have been traced back to military bases
17:32 _Trev_ the fact that it is broadcast means there's no exposure to the embeded agent
17:32 cctoide (at least one was traced back to a RAF base)
17:33 _Trev_ cell phones, email, a webpage - all those methods expose the recieving party to a certain amount of vulnerability.
17:33 mikemol They also contain a certain amount of safety.
17:34 _Trev_ since there's a digital paper trail of sorts
17:34 mikemol Having the reception equipment needed may be easy, but it's not exactly common.
17:35 cctoide ah, it was this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincolnshire_Poacher_%28numbers_station%29
17:35 cctoide traced to a RAF base in Cyprus
17:35 mikemol I can see how it's still going to be useful in cases where other means aren't as trivial, though.
17:36 _Trev_ good point re eqiuptment
17:36 BatSteve I disagree with parts of your assessment, trev
17:36 _Trev_ but the key is listening is passive
17:36 _Trev_ vs more modern methods
17:37 BatSteve Listening is passive, but getting useful information transmitted from random numbers requires equipment in the form of one-time pads and / or other decryption equipment
17:37 _Trev_ Good point
17:37 BatSteve Stuff that would certainly doom an agent far quicker than a questionable cell phone trail
17:37 _Trev_ could be based on other publically available keys though
17:38 mikemol BatSteve: That depends on the nature of the security forces in the territory.
17:38 _Trev_ a book for example
17:38 _Trev_ numbers refering to page/line/character count
17:38 _Trev_ of a certain book
17:38 BatSteve That's true, and more plausible.
17:39 _Trev_ running around with harry potter is not too suspicious
17:39 cctoide I was referring to your doubts as to whether they were even related to espionage or just hoaxes, though
17:39 _Trev_ and the key could easily be commited to memory
17:39 cctoide because I think there's enough proof that they are, or were at one time
17:39 LinuxH4x0r joined #thegeekgroup
17:39 _Trev_ I certainly think they are being used
17:39 _Trev_ for that
17:40 _Trev_ seems like a simple and elegent solution for anyone in deep cover
17:41 _Trev_ solutions that rely on more modenr tech would have to be changed/updated too often probably
17:41 cctoide well, maybe they use other methods now that work through cellphones, the internet, or whatever
17:42 _Trev_ yeah
17:42 _Trev_ one thing I know that is done
17:42 cctoide it doesn't mean numbers stations would be instantly rendered useless
17:42 _Trev_ is using an email account
17:42 _Trev_ no emails are sent with the account but both parties write info in draft emails
17:42 _Trev_ which can be accessed by both parties
17:42 mikemol Heh
17:43 mikemol I've used my gmail account as a notepad, but I usually eventually send the email to myself once I'm done.
17:43 _Trev_ yep
17:43 mikemol Another thing to keep in mind is that different regions will have different levels of common technology.

17:43 mikemol (before you ask. :P )
17:44 _Trev_ lol
17:44 mman454 mikemol You know me well.
17:44 cctoide also, looking around I see UVB-76 apparently transmitted last August
17:44 cctoide http://soundcloud.com/djoutcold/uvb-76-aug-23-2010-9-32ampst
17:45 mman454 That's goint to be one of my home pages for firefox portable. (the log that is)
17:47 cctoide most number station DBs seem to be abandoned though
17:47 _Trev_ the US submarine transission station is partially located in michigan
17:47 cctoide either that or there just aren't that many broadcasts anymore
17:49 _Trev_ they prolly just use twitter now
17:50 _Trev_ :P
17:50 cctoide heh
17:50 mman454 Do you know how to get the log to show everything in reverse, newest first order without having to show it in plain text?
17:50 cctoide not really related, but one thing/story that's been popping up a lot lately is wide-scale astroturfing
17:51 _Trev_ ah, by the CIA?
17:51 tesla4d The GOP?
17:51 _Trev_ the leaked RFP?
17:51 cctoide well, I guess it's mainly because of the thing with Anonymous and HBGary
17:52 Serostern Maybe even the KGB?
17:52 Serostern Conspiring with their BFF's?
17:52 _Trev_ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HBGary#Astroturfing
17:52 cctoide the "persona management software" that automatically creates an "online presence" for commenters that will post stuff favorable to a particular viewpoint on popular sites
17:52 Serostern Not to mention the PCP!
17:52 tesla4d Oh, yeah. I forgot about that part of the whole thing.
17:53 _Trev_ well, if you think about it, as long as we can vote, they key tactic for enforcing a certain set of policies is to manipulate the opinions of the masses.
17:53 _Trev_ so it does not suprise me.
17:54 tesla4d So it's not "on the internet, nobody knows you're a dog" it's "on the internet, nobody knows you're THE MAN"
17:54 cctoide most people seem to think this kind of software actually posts comments itself, like a spam bot
17:54 cctoide obviously I have no idea how it works, but it seems like it would be more effective to have it create the "backstory" on social sites and whatnot, and then have actual people doing the astroturfing
17:55 _Trev_ it doesn't seem like an effective method
17:55 _Trev_ bots are still easy to spot, even to a casual observer
17:55 tesla4d That was my understanding. The software handles the gritty details of maintaining a plausible identity so the human operator can spend their time generating the actual "content"
17:56 _Trev_ and the nature of social media is such that you are unlikely to be swayed much by the opinion of poeple you don't know.
17:57 tesla4d If this is the case, though... It's my understanding that it's possible to identify anonymous writers by their writing styles. If we did that to these astroturfers, we should see a lot of people writing the same thing, or using the same writing style, at least.
17:57 cctoide one thing that bothers me, though, is... what is the point of the backstory, exactly?
17:57 cctoide it's easy enough to create a random handle for the purposes of partaking in a certain discussion in a comment thread
17:58 _Trev_ honestly, it sounds like it ammounts to a few shitty scripts
17:58 cctoide if you start creating the backstory so it will show up on a google search, you're adding a ton of work since it has to look real enough not to arouse suspicion
17:58 tesla4d Yeah, but I think it's a credibility thing. I know that whenever I see a *really* strang youtube comment, for example, I check out the user's page to see if they appear to be a real person and not somebody's mouthpiece.
17:58 _Trev_ that create an email adress and sign up for facebook and then upload a few pictures
17:59 tesla4d Even creating some small amount of corroborating data like names and pictures would go a long way to convince most people.
18:00 tesla4d Even if a more focused examination revealed, say, the same profile pic on seven different accounts, I doubt that many people would actually look that hard.
18:00 _Trev_ the real key issue is, why aren't we more concerned that the U.S. GOV is manipulating it's own poeple in this way
18:00 tesla4d You're assuming I'm not.
18:00 _Trev_ yeah, most poeple won't even notice
18:00 _Trev_ they dont wanna be late for jersey shore
18:00 _Trev_ so they wont bother to look into it
18:01 _Trev_ tesla, I say 'we' as in 'everybody'.
18:02 tesla4d I'm really quite concerned about these trends. I just typically keep quiet because most people don't want to hear it. And yes, you're correct that most people don't...
18:02 tesla4d BUT
18:02 tesla4d Who says people aren't interested? The mainstream media?
18:02 tesla4d Perhaps people simply aren't aware of these issues.
18:02 mikemol _Trev_: 'a few pictures' ... 'a few x scripts' ... Be careful to remember that quanity != quality.
18:03 mikemol I know the kind of logic I'd use to produce linguistic content like background info, but it's not the exactly trivial to get right. :)
18:03 _Trev_ Mikemol: you are right about that
18:04 _Trev_ a system like this would have to be really good in order to not be detected
18:05 tesla4d I don't think detection would be a big issue. If somebody found out that there were a bunch of people posting things to comment threads, I doubt their first reaction will be "OMG THE GOVERNMENT IS MANIPULATING ME!!! *tinfoil hat*" But rather, "Wow, some asshole's sockpuppeting"
18:06 tesla4d Leaving the operator free to drop those profiles and create others
18:06 _Trev_ and even so, I'm not convinced it would be an effective way to change opinions
18:06 tesla4d That might be a good point. I'm really not sure.
18:07 tesla4d It's interesting and scary stuff, whether or not it's really effective, though.
18:07 _Trev_ yeah
18:08 _Trev_ seems like it would have to be fairly complex to not be detected by the service you are signing up for
18:08 cctoide I'm curious how expensive this is to run
18:08 mikemol _Trev_: Thinking about what tesla4d said...sure it'd be an effective way to change opinions. On /b/.
18:08 mikemol /b/ is like a chaotic high-gain amplifier.
18:08 mman454 I went through the logs and I still have no clue wtf you're talking about...
18:08 tesla4d And /b/, if it latches onto something, really can affect the wider world.
18:09 _Trev_ I mean, if you create 100,000 new FB accounts FB is gonna notice unless you go about it realyl smartly
18:09 _Trev_ really*
18:09 mikemol mman454: At various points...earthquakes, disasters, electronics, radio, crypto, spy gear, intelligence and counterintelligence, propaganda.
18:09 _Trev_ yeah, I mean, I am not saying it isn't possible
18:10 mman454 ah. that's generally what I'm looking for when I ask what did I miss. That is if its too long for me to find in the logs.
18:10 cctoide I think someone linked to contract specifications from the USAF(?) that besides the identity creation side of things there were also requirements for software to mask user addresses, etc.

18:11 BatSteve oh well
18:11 _Trev_ yeah I would assume that proxies would need to be used
18:12 _Trev_ as far as topic...seems as if we are all over the place :D
18:12 mman454 BatSteve: You wouldn't know that. I mean its not like you're the main chan admin or anything. ;-)

18:13 cctoide Loads of relevant stuff in there
18:13 cctoide (I'm kind of clueless about politics, so I don't know if Daily Kos has a bad rep or whatever. The solicitation I mentioned is there though)
18:14 BatSteve (grin)
18:15 mikemol BatSteve: Have BotSteve respond to something like '.topictag (some tag)', and have the tag expire after a while unless someone says it again. :)
18:15 mikemol (And then let BotSteve manage the topic, obviously. :) )
18:15 tesla4d cctoide, I'm guessing a good third of americans would call anything from dailykos "liberal claptrap" and bin it.
18:16 BatSteve That counts on users to keep the topic updated
18:16 BatSteve Which I doubt we'd do
18:16 mikemol It's an informative piece of infromation, not an imperative one. :)
18:17 cctoide Heh, I figured. Well, I found it through Google on BoingBoing which had a link to someone who linked the Daily Kos article via MetaFilter.
18:17 cctoide so... yeah. Maybe it's mirrored somewhere
18:17 mikemol Maybe a word cloud topic section, updated every hour, would work better. :)
18:18 cctoide it's not at the .gov site they linked to anymore, though

18:36 _Trev_ I love MB
18:37 _Trev_ Sometimes I rage because of how poorly constructed the 'science' expierements are
18:37 _Trev_ but, it is still a fun show.
18:37 tesla4d The editors cut the dozens of uninteresting repeated trials.
18:39 _Trev_ Of course - that much is to be expected.

18:40 _Trev_ but largely, it is a fantastic show
18:40 wannabe1987 hi hoedown :)
18:41 HoeDown well greetings
18:41 HoeDown What's the topic today?
18:41 tesla4d I think the people that get inspired to get into science by Mythbusters won't get a little extra instruction along the way.
18:43 tesla4d Wait, I forgot a "don't" in there.
18:43 tesla4d Stupid input box on xchat
18:43 HoeDown indeed, heh.
18:43 tesla4d too short to let me properly proofread.
18:44 HoeDown Well, I feel like MB gets people interested in the topics at hand enough to do their own research on such things, to find information.
18:44 HoeDown But that's probably just us folks who already have a handle on what's going on. People with no clue will start trying things without research half the time
18:45 _Trev_ yeah, sadly it is one of the last truly good shows on discovery
18:46 tesla4d I'm not sure that's a problem.
18:46 _Trev_ man that channel has gone downhill
18:46 tesla4d Lately my mantra has been "Pay attention to what you're doing"

18:47 tesla4d So, if somebody's going to do some mythbusters-type experiments, I don't think that's a problem. Hopefully, even if people won't completely understand what they're working with, they'll at least be used to working with it.

18:48 Seroster Damn DC
18:48 HoeDown well, the great thing i've noticed with MB is that they keep saying "don't try this at home", and then turn around and say "we're doing this with all the things you can find in your house!"
18:49 Seroster Heh.
18:49 HoeDown makes me think they're trying to Darwin the population down a bit
18:49 Seroster "Never mix blur with blur!"
18:49 wannabe1987 probably a good idea...
18:49 Seroster Yeah right
18:50 Seroster Hoe, Adam Savage is greatly concerned with the safety of his viewers, and even thou they joke about it they don't want people doing the shit at home.
18:50 _Trev_ lol
18:50 _Trev_ Most def
18:50 HoeDown as they show us how to make thermite.
18:50 _Trev_ Besides, any man who will go to comicon in a hellboy outfit that looks better than the movie....is awesome in my book
18:50 _Trev_ Adam=the man
18:51 HoeDown and indeed, they try to make everything as vague as possible for the safety of the viewers, but they use such simple concoctions that anyone could find on the internet with a quick Google search
18:51 Seroster HoeDown, you can not have an experiment about the paint compsition on Hindenburgh without mentioning the rust and aluminium. They DID NOT tell us what they did to set it off.
18:51 HoeDown which, i suppose, is part of the draw of teh show, they keep tihngs down-to-earth
18:51 HoeDown Indeed, and agreed.

19:00 _Trev_ hell yeah I fail at IRC
19:00 HoeDown I wish we had proper BBC television here in the states, all our censorship bollocks pisses me off. Ruins the fluidity of speech.
19:00 Seroster Tsk.
19:00 HoeDown And the fact that the british make you horny for ground beef is none of our business.
19:00 Seroster It is rather stupid, yes. Evrybody knows that "F***" means FUCK, so why not just say FUCK?
19:01 Seroster Omnomnomnom.
19:01 wannabe1987 WIN
19:01 Seroster If I ever had to amputate a body part I would either stuff it and hang it on the wall or eat it.
19:01 wannabe1987 nice

19:02 HoeDown But i'm just a mad scientist like that.
19:02 HoeDown Waiting for the technological singularity.
19:02 _Trev_ Why not add an extra limb?
19:02 Seroster "That on the wall? Yep, that's my arm." - and then you can make up a great story, one that is much better than "Drunk driver ran over me outside a bordello" - like "I had to carve it off with a spoon so I could get out of my parachute harness and fight the lion that was below the tree I was stuck in!"
19:02 _Trev_ vs. replacing an excisting one
19:02 wannabe1987 lol
19:03 HoeDown I've also designed a tail
19:03 Seroster That would be truly badass
19:03 _Trev_ You could use electrodes on the roof of your mouth to control it with your tounge
19:03 Seroster Hoedown, that's not a tail...
19:03 wannabe1987 trev...where would i put a third leg?!
19:03 HoeDown But that would require neurological implants, and that's not my bag
19:03 Seroster Trev, I already control a LOT of stuff with my tounge... Heh.
19:03 _Trev_ third? it would be my FOURTH leg
19:03 Seroster ..Fifth thatis.
19:04 Seroster :O
19:04 HoeDown Yeah, but i really don't think flying RC planes counts as having any sort of real talent with yoru mouth.
19:05 _Trev_ oooh, he got told.
19:05 cctoide Does MB in the US still have that narrator that sounds like he's narrating a Disney show?
19:05 Seroster Well, I don't fly airplanes with my tounge, but I do SOME stuff involving both a fly and my tounge sometimes.
19:05 _Trev_ kinda, yeah.
19:06 cctoide I haven't watched it in ages but I felt it kinda brought down the tone :/
19:06 Seroster cctoide, Whoooo?
19:06 HoeDown i'm sure Boden appreciates it, Seroster.
19:06 _Trev_ "I don't always fly airplanes, but when I do, I fly them with my mouth'
19:06 Seroster HoeDown, He sure did. He even gave me a tip!
19:06 wannabe1987 LOL
19:06 HoeDown i'm sure you got more than that
19:06 Seroster Yep, I'm aids positive now
19:07 wannabe1987 cool! don't give it to your girlfriend now
19:07 Seroster She's fucked. In more than one way.
19:07 Seroster Ohnbtw, I hate mac!
19:07 Seroster *Suddle change of topic*
19:07 wannabe1987 subtle*
19:08 Seroster Fuck :(
19:08 wannabe1987 its ok
19:08 wannabe1987 its said weird
19:08 BatSteve so long team
19:08 BatSteve is now known as BatSteve-Away
19:08 Seroster But thanks for correcting me. I am now slightly smarter (or I should say less stupid) than yesterday.
19:08 wannabe1987 bye batty-steve
19:08 wannabe1987 lol
19:08 Seroster Cya BatSteve-Away
19:08 wannabe1987 yay for being less stupid!
19:09 HoeDown If only we were all so lucky
19:09 HoeDown I'm still recovering from lighting my brain on fire
19:09 HoeDown ... i think i need help
19:09 HoeDown lol
19:09 wannabe1987 when did you do that?
19:10 Seroster Heh.
19:10 _Trev_ also: why?
19:10 HoeDown well, you see, i had these matches for starting the fireplace, and they're really long...
19:10 Seroster Heh
19:10 HoeDown And you know how it goes. A normal person does something stupid and corrects his mistake. A scientist keeps going to see if you can get different results
19:10 Seroster HoeDown, I have really long hair, and I am also a fire spinner. So. Sometimes it gets an involontary shortening.
19:11 HoeDown heh, i used to have long hair.
19:11 Seroster I know the feeling of burnt hair
19:11 HoeDown I only set my ponytail on fire twice, though
19:11 * wannabe1987 is proud of never setting her hair on fire...yet. hanging around at TGG its only a matter of time, yes?
19:12 Seroster That is nothing to be proud off.
19:12 Seroster of*
19:12 Seroster Fuckit. I'll just blame my keyboard.
19:13 _Trev_ I've had a healthy respect for fire for a while
19:13 _Trev_ ever since I made napalm
19:13 HoeDown a little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men, but when those same men turn their back, their common sense does seem to lack.
19:13 HoeDown and as such, we keep lighting ourselves on fire
19:15 wannabe1987 fire keeps me warm
19:15 Seroster Heh
19:16 HoeDown Ninjas can't catch you when you're on fire
19:16 HoeDown And i'm always surrounded by ninjas
19:17 wannabe1987 oooo everything makes sense now...:P
19:18 Seroster AIGH! Now downloading The Mask
19:19 HoeDown Somebody stop him!
19:19 Seroster For the simple reason that I want to see the scene when he makes a machine gun from balloons =D
19:19 Seroster http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4158885/The_Mask_%281994%29_%28Jim_Carrey__Cameron_Diaz%29
19:19 Seroster Great seeds for something made -94
19:20 HoeDown oh god, i need a balloon machine gun
19:20 HoeDown Readygo.
19:20 Seroster Arr
19:21 wannabe1987 next project at the lab...commence!
19:22 HoeDown Actually, i have a Zomb-related project that i plan on working on first
19:22 wannabe1987 yay zomb(ies)
19:22 Seroster what is the new proect?
19:23 Seroster Proect sounds like some kind of vaginal medication.
19:23 HoeDown old Brass Eagle paintball pistol, to be modified and rebuilt around the internals, to be turned into a seven-shot Nerf revolver
19:23 Seroster The mask down in 20mins, and I havent even connected to all the seeds
19:23 Seroster Swoody
19:23 _Trev_ oooh
19:23 _Trev_ nice work
19:23 _Trev_ with the PB pistol
19:23 tesla4d I think I might be breaking up because of the conversations in this channel.
19:23 wannabe1987 breaking up?
19:23 _Trev_ breaking up?
19:24 Seroster breaking up?
19:24 * Seroster just wanted to be a part of 'it' =P
19:24 tesla4d I thought the HBGary thing was interesting so I brought it up to Paul and we ended up in a shouting argument with both of us claiming that we don't understand what each other are saying.
19:25 Seroster Heh
19:25 tesla4d And I realize that every time we talk about anything interesting, we either agree completely or end up screaming at each other.
19:25 tesla4d This doesn't bode well for the future of our relationship
19:26 Seroster Well, that sucks..
19:26 HoeDown It's an old Eagle 68, and all i'm using is the CO2 release system and trigger. I've got to carve the whole casing out of wood, but it'll be beauteous when it's done
19:26 tesla4d Yep. Especially since I have so much invested in this relationship
19:26 Seroster How do you mean?
19:28 tesla4d That Honda Civic I drive? It's not *my* car, it's *our* car. I've already moved across the country to be with Paul, and that's completely ignoring the emotional aspect of any break-up.
19:28 Seroster Hoedown, how thick are the walls inbetween chambers? Would be great to have 12 chambers instead of 7
19:28 Seroster Crud
19:28 wannabe1987 :( sorry tesla
19:28 Seroster You got a job where you live now?
19:28 HoeDown indeed, but i'm hoping to keep the design small. And with the small-size co2 canisters, the air will only last for 21-ish shots per canister
19:29 HoeDown so that's three dart-refills
19:29 Seroster I hope you can refill your co2 cans yourself...
19:29 Seroster OR are they onetimers?
19:29 HoeDown well, it's the tiny ones, onetimers, yeah. I've got a few boxes of them
19:29 tesla4d Seroster: no, I'm living off of student aid and the good will of my roommates.
19:29 Seroster OW
19:30 HoeDown figure i carry a pocket of darts, a pocket of canisters, and scare everyone i know with my fancy new revolver.
19:30 HoeDown i love how these two conversations have nothing to do with each other
19:30 wannabe1987 *hides behind a door*
19:30 _Trev_ that sucks tesla
19:30 Seroster I suppose moving home to the folks is out of the picture?
19:31 HoeDown The way i figure the whole thing working, I'll have a long-range sniping pistol like the one i have now, but my current is a single-shot spring load
19:31 HoeDown ...and i won't have to deal with the spring getting weaker like i am with said current beastie
19:31 Seroster Right. I would prefer a minigun.
19:31 tesla4d I don't know anything about what I might do. I've just started worrying about this issue in the past few minutes.
19:31 tesla4d So it's nothing to worry about for the next few days.
19:31 Seroster Hoedown, I can send you a couple of BAD ASS springs.
19:31 _Trev_ good luck tesla
19:32 Seroster On the bright side you haven't got any kids.
19:32 _Trev_ unrelated: I'm working on night vision for my gun :D
19:32 HoeDown I'd like to have two revolvers with some auto-advance going on, but i prefer being stealthy and only having to shoot if i must. And if i shoot, you'll notice it when you move a foot away from me because of it. lol
19:32 HoeDown and i've got springs coming out the wazoo, but thanks for the offer
19:33 Seroster Right. But newton is turning in his grave when you put it like that
19:33 Seroster With MY springs you could actually move someone a couple of feet thou, but it would take you a pneumatic cylinder to recompress them
19:33 HoeDown well, not from the physical force of the dart, but the personal reaction of "oh shit that hurts"
19:34 _Trev_ lol
19:34 Seroster I thought the purpose of using foam darts is not to hurt your opponent
19:34 _Trev_ true
19:34 tesla4d Not to *injure* your opponents
19:34 _Trev_ otherwise I'd be using my replica enfield airsoft rifle
19:34 Seroster My bad, tesla4d.
19:34 HoeDown the purpose of using foam darts is that it's safer. But between myself and Kato, we've been modding nerf guns to provide people with some nifty little welts here and there.
19:35 HoeDown and we always have settings on our designs to allow for lower speeds, safer shots, etc.
19:35 Seroster heh
19:35 _Trev_ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UFDLeaE-7w
19:35 HoeDown But for a long-range weapon, it needs more power. and that power can fuck your shit up at close range
19:35 Seroster I wish I was that interested in something.
19:35 _Trev_ that will leave welts :D
19:35 HoeDown which is why i hide in a corner and peg people from a distance
19:36 HoeDown safer for them that way, lol
19:36 Seroster Good idea to get cornered. (splleing?)
19:36 HoeDown spelling was good
19:36 * wannabe1987 avoids hoedown's corner
19:36 HoeDown though you spelled "spelling" wrong
19:37 Seroster That was intentional.
19:37 HoeDown indeed.
19:37 wannabe1987 lol
19:37 _Trev_ We should come up with a good claymore design
19:37 _Trev_ with a tripwire
19:37 _Trev_ hehe
19:37 Seroster Can you sneak up on someone and stab them with the dart? It SHOULD count as a kill
19:38 tesla4d The best claymore I've seen just used a couple of mousetraps with a sling full of pellets.
19:38 HoeDown heh, I've actually had a few good ideas concerning wall-mounted dart-spraying designs
19:38 HoeDown suction cups are a nifty thing
19:38 HoeDown But in the dark, the tripwires make things too dangerous in close quarters
19:38 _Trev_ I would also like to know what the knife rules are as I have two nerf swords.
19:39 HoeDown i was thinking lasers, or maybe just a little remote
19:39 _Trev_ :D
19:39 _Trev_ IR would work
19:39 HoeDown no melee weapons for Zomb.
19:39 tesla4d Oooh, we're going to need a #zomb channel.
19:39 wannabe1987 trev_ will u be there saturday?
19:39 wannabe1987 lol
19:39 _Trev_ or a narrow field motion sensor
19:39 HoeDown YES WE WILL
19:39 _Trev_ I'm not sure, I'd like to come saturday yes
19:39 wannabe1987 you should
19:39 wannabe1987 i'll be there...
19:39 tesla4d Somebody should create one before it gets snatched up
19:39 HoeDown and i'm fairly sure i won't be there saturday, but i'm still working on a logo

19:45 speedrunnerG55 wow
19:45 speedrunnerG55 "a tommy gun"
19:45 mikemol _Trev_: What kind of IR camera?
19:47 _Trev_ it is from some sort of industrial backup camera rig for busses and stuff
19:47 _Trev_ about 2"x1" in size, hermetically sealed, with a ring of IR illuminators around the outside
19:48 mikemol
19:48 _Trev_ then there is a control box that it runs to and that runs to a 5" LCD display that is on a swivel mount
19:48 mikemol Ah, ok. Near-IR CCD, then.
19:48 _Trev_ yeah
19:48 _Trev_ No FLIR for me :P
19:49 mikemol FLIR = fun. :)
19:49 mikemol Well, unless you have to use their software components. Which you do.
19:49 HoeDown I have become lost in technobabbling. But that is why i am a mechanically-minded fool, not an electronically minded one.
19:50 wannabe1987 i usually sit here confused...its ok
19:50 _Trev_ my roomate and I were looking in to the possibility of making a thermal imaging sensor
19:51 _Trev_ given how pricey they are

19:52 mikemol parsleyfirefly: Is that an A320 or an A325?
19:52 parsleyfirefly yes

19:55 parsleyfirefly it just stares at me.
19:56 parsleyfirefly because i am the hottest thing in the office.

20:03 mikemol _Trev_: If you want to try to put together grid bolometer, that'd be pretty awesome.
20:04 _Trev_ I have a hefty amount of learning to do before that would be possible
20:04 mikemol Putting together a proper microbolometer would require equipment I doubt GG has, though it's conceivable it could get its hands on it.
20:04 _Trev_ what is a grid bolometer
20:04 mikemol A bolometer is an IR level sensor.
20:04 _Trev_ vs the regular kind? :D
20:05 mikemol A grid bolometer would have multiple bolometers arranged in a grid. :)
20:05 _Trev_ ah, so a rudementery imaging sensor?
20:06 mikemol Right. :)
20:07 speedrunnerG55 thats awesome
20:07 speedrunnerG55 how would you do that?
20:08 _Trev_ wonder what we would need to make a legit one. Do you have to do chemical milling to create the circuits on the substrate?
20:09 _Trev_ just curious what multi-million dollar piece of manufacturing hardware we lack. :D
20:16 cctoide not directly related, but I saw this a few days ago: http://hackaday.com/2010/12/03/make-your-own-tsa-naked-scanner/

20:18 mikemol That's part of why my tech spring cleaning is moving stuff over toward the Geek Group. :)
20:18 mikemol I may not have ever managed to use something, but someone will, and that someone might end up being me. :)

20:20 _Trev_ Yeah good point
20:20 _Trev_ I tossed out so much stuff when I moved

20:20 wannabe1987 lol
20:21 wannabe1987 i don't have stuff to toss
20:21 cctoide One thing I'd enjoy seeing done as a GG project is a homemade jet engine from an automotive turbo
20:22 _Trev_ Oh, yeah that would be neat
20:23 wannabe1987 who is gonna head the project?
20:23 mikemol There's another couple coworkers of mine I *need* to get floating down toward GG.

20:33 wannabe1987 trev_ we can make the delorean, right?
20:34 tesla4d Then we put poles across the road so you really had to try to get onto the tracks to get hit, but people still get hit.
20:34 wannabe1987 people are idiots
20:34 tesla4d And now people want automatic barriers, like gates you can't drive around.
20:35 tesla4d No, it's gone too far already. At this point, people are *trying* to get killed. Let them.
20:35 wannabe1987 no, cuz then when the gates are down as an error...youc an't go anywehere
20:35 tesla4d Oh, I forgot about that possibility.

20:53 cctoide I hope once Minecraft is opensourced someone creates a fork with DF-level geology
20:53 Darksecond cctoide: just go play DF? :3
20:54 Darksecond dwarf fortres is awesome, been playing it for a couple of weeks now :-)
20:54 cctoide I've played tons of DF
20:54 cctoide but it'd be nice if Minecraft's geology wasn't so simplistic
20:55 cctoide though I'm pretty sure you'd hit MC's engine limitations pretty fast, as Notch's said in the past he doesn't want to add too many blocks since it only supports a limited amount of block types
20:55 Darksecond i'm pretty sure MC is coded by apes/idiots
20:55 speedrunnerG55 i want flir so bad
20:56 cctoide I'm thinking it's probably the level format
21:01 cctoide 1 byte per block
21:03 _Trev_ MC is java so right there there is all sorts of fun issues probably
21:04 wannabe1987 left #thegeekgroup
21:05 cctoide well, it also started out as a screw-around project mostly
21:06 cctoide I played Infiniminer around the time it came out and I recall trying the very first MC builds when it was just an applet
21:07 _Trev_ I'm curious what led to MC being more popular than ininiminer?
21:07 tesla4d Valve
21:07 _Trev_ was it because MC was being actively developed?
21:07 _Trev_ valve?
21:08 tesla4d Valve, the company that did Half-Life, Portal, TF2...
21:08 cctoide well, I'm not one to talk since I'm worse than both of them, but I think Infiniminer's dev was even more of a hack than Notch
21:08 cctoide at least in the small games he made
21:08 tesla4d Okay, no, not valve.
21:08 tesla4d Probably all the damn pixel artists.
21:08 cctoide it became fairly popular and then he opensourced it
21:09 cctoide apparently it trusted the client 100% so people immediately created all sorts of cheats that made it impossible to play online
21:09 cctoide and I guess the community died shortly after that
21:09 _Trev_ ah so MC was a improvement on some level?
21:09 mikemol speedrunnerG55: http://www.flir.com/thermography/eurasia/en/content/?id=11316
21:10 cctoide he also said at some point he was done with it and didn't feel like doing anything similar again
21:10 cctoide _Trev_: sort of, though I don't know how long it took until MC had multiplayer
21:10 mikemol That would be the most generically useful FLIR Camera that Chris might be able to get his hands on.
21:11 mikemol The 310 and the 320 have NTSC and ethernet outputs. The ethernet output also supports RTSP MPEG4 streaming.
21:11 cctoide I stopped following it a few weeks later and at the time MC was still just a small applet that let you screw around
21:11 cctoide more or less MC Classic
21:11 mikemol Neither is useful for precise measuring, though. For that, you'd need to use either FLIR researcher or develop software using their SDK as we do where I work.
21:11 cctoide Infiniminer was an XNA game iirc
21:11 speedrunnerG55 how much does this cost?
21:11 _Trev_ mike that is cool
21:11 mikemol Less than ten grand, I hear.
21:12 mikemol That's a steal...
21:12 speedrunnerG55 oh rly
21:12 mikemol The old A40 was something like 20 grand, and could only stream 16-bit precision frames at about one every ten seconds.
21:12 mikemol When the A320 came out, the cameras got dirt cheap, relatively speaking.
21:13 speedrunnerG55 huh
21:14 _Trev_ what is it that makes these expensive, relative to a normal ccd? economies of scale? supply?
21:14 speedrunnerG55 for a colledge student who want to experiment with stuff, what would you recomend xD
21:14 mikemol _Trev_: The microbolometers are the most expensive part.
21:14 _Trev_ right
21:15 mikemol speedrunnerG55: I dunno...what do you want to do?
21:15 _Trev_ My guess has always been they are so much money due to low volume/few manufacturers?
21:15 _Trev_ I am curious
21:15 speedrunnerG55 look at computers and maximise heat distribution
21:16 _Trev_ my roomate wants one to put on his drone platform when he finally gets it built :P lol
21:16 cctoide do you know if "pushbroom" sensors are still used for anything besides satellites?
21:16 mikemol The sensor devices were horribly unreliable with the A20/A40 series. The A3xx series cameras have been much more reliable.
21:16 mikemol I don't know any more than that, though, and I'd probably slam against an NDA if I did.
21:17 mikemol cctoide: I don't even know what a 'pushbroom' sensor is.
21:17 speedrunnerG55 ?
21:17 _Trev_ hookay guys talk to you soon
21:17 _Trev_ peace
21:17 _Trev_ left #thegeekgroup
21:18 cctoide Oh, ok
21:18 cctoide Ah, ok. It's a sensor consisting of a 1D array of pixels that has to be "swept"/pushed along to create an image
21:19 mikemol Oh, yeah.
21:19 cctoide the stuff that led to FLIR being called "forward looking"
21:19 mikemol There are systems that do that.
21:19 mikemol I wanted to switch to that for one of our products...it'd work better than a 2D rasterizer.
21:20 mikemol speedrunnerG55: You could probably build one of those, come to think of it.
21:21 speedrunnerG55 ??!!
21:21 speedrunnerG55 how
21:21 mikemol If you could find a way to build a high-rate bolometer, you could then use a spinning mirror to sweep your single bit sensor across your object.
21:21 mikemol A photodarlington would be a good first step in the build, I suspect.
21:21 speedrunnerG55 what is a bolometer?
21:22 mikemol .wiki bolometer
21:22 BotSteve "A bolometer is a device for measuring the energy of incident electromagnetic radiation." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolometer
21:22 mikemol BotSteve: I'm going to grow to love you.
21:23 speedrunnerG55 hi botsteve
21:23 BotSteve Greetings speedrunnerG55!
21:26 speedrunnerG55 how do i make this?
21:27 mikemol I have no idea.
21:27 mikemol You'll have to research that yourself. :)
21:27 speedrunnerG55 ...
21:30 mikemol speedrunnerG55: All you need to do is build a device which senses how much light falls on it.
21:31 speedrunnerG55 a web cam?
21:31 mikemol Comonents exist to do it. photodiodes, photoresistors, phototransistors and photodarlingtons would be where I'd look.
21:31 Ycarene joined #thegeekgroup
21:31 mikemol speedrunnerG55: A web cam won't operate fast enough.
21:31 speedrunnerG55 huh
21:31 speedrunnerG55 oh
21:32 mikemol What you can _probably_ do is take one of those photosensitive devices, apply an amplifier and use it to drive the mic or line-in on your computer.
21:32 mikemol Then you can do much of the rest in software.
21:33 mikemol Hm.
21:33 mikemol For a proper sweep, the computer will need to know the angle at the same time as the light signal.
21:34 mikemol You can probably use the light signal on one channel, and encode the angle as amplitude on the other channel.
21:34 mikemol That'll get you a linescanner.
21:34 speedrunnerG55 huh
21:35 mikemol Heck, now I want to build one of these things. I don't think it'd necessarly be incredibly hard.
21:36 tesla4d Who wants to go to a furry convention?
21:37 speedrunnerG55 ...
21:37 speedrunnerG55 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eGdPhIQbHA
21:38 mikemol Muahaha
21:38 mikemol http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Cat=525357&k=photodiode
21:39 mikemol Fiber optic networks use photodiodes for receivers. That means the scale is there, and the part is cheap. :D

21:46 speedrunnerG55 bye linux user
21:46 speedrunnerG55 i mean h4xor
21:46 mikemol Hm. One of those parts operates from 400nm to 1100nm. Use a filter on it, and you could limit it to about 7500nm-1100nm, which isn't bad. FLIR cameras run from 750-1300.
21:46 mikemol You won't use it at its full spectral range, or even at its peak sensitivity, but you'll see thermal instead of visual.
21:47 mikemol Neat.
21:47 speedrunnerG55 what is 400-750?
21:47 speedrunnerG55 visible light?
21:47 mikemol Not sure off the top of my head.
21:48 mikemol According to the Wiki, visible light rungs from 390nm to 750nm.
21:48 wannabe-not_here sorry, i came home to plug her in and then i'm leaving for dinner...
21:48 speedrunnerG55 i cant believe i guessed htat
21:49 speedrunnerG55 989i8888889oi think 750 is blue ray
21:49 mikemol Huh. I was wrong about thermal.
21:49 mikemol .wiki infrared
21:49 BotSteve "Infrared (IR) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength longer than that of visible light, measured from the nominal edge of visible red light at 0.7 micrometres, and extending conventionally to 300 micrometres." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared
21:50 mikemol Thermal apparently starts at 1300nm.
21:50 mikemol er. 1400nm.
21:50 speedrunnerG55 9oi8thermal?
21:50 speedrunnerG55 thermal?
21:51 mikemol Regions of the IR band.
21:51 mikemol 'thermal' would mean you're looking at temperatures.
21:52 mikemol Well, that's somewhat inaccurate.
21:52 mikemol I think WP is really, really wrong on that page.
21:53 mikemol The cameras I work with require no external light source, but according to FLIR's page, they operate at 750nm to 1300nm.
21:53 mikemol Unless I grossly misread it.
21:54 mikemol FWIW, here's WP's page: http://www.flir.com/thermography/eurasia/en/content/?id=35157
21:54 mikemol Not sure why I wound up on the 'eurasia' section.
21:55 mikemol I've got laundry to do this evening, but if I have time, I'm going to try to swing by LStL.

23:45 Obtuse yea. probably 4 years
23:45 Obtuse used it while I was at GE Aviation for our test scripts

23:48 Obtuse making sure they were correct.
23:48 Obtuse used python to control all of the GPIB (Function Generators, Scopes)
23:48 Obtuse it was a pretty sophisticated test setup
