00:00 Nazzy anything that costs less than about $200 is likely to be trash
00:00 Cprossu_Laptop I've been surprised before
00:00 Nazzy too many vendors releasing software assisted raid crap
00:00 Cprossu_Laptop I find that any SAS solution that costs more than $800 is likely garbage too
00:00 Cprossu_Laptop as in single card
00:01 Cprossu_Laptop or at the very least not worth it
00:01 Ponko92 don't diss the SAS cprossu
00:01 * speed-pc walks away
00:02 Nazzy probably not worth it, though any card that can provide full bandwidth for a 24 port backplane isn't going to be cheap
00:02 Cprossu_Laptop true.
00:02 wannabe1987 speed-mobile come back!
00:02 Ponko92 why speed-pc come back man
00:02 Nazzy infact anything with a 24 port backplane is both expensive and horribly heavy
00:02 Cprossu_Laptop how have the intel branded units been? I've heard mixed things
00:03 wannabe1987 speed-pc come back too!
00:03 seanzzz left #thegeekgroup
00:03 * speed-pc hears beeps
00:03 Nazzy intel branded raid cards? don't use them often enough to register an opinion
00:03 * speed-pc desides to stay
00:03 Cprossu_Laptop yeah and fair enough
00:05 speed-pc how much different is it to write in assembely for higher end processors?
00:05 Cprossu_Laptop depends on what you think of as a higher end processor.
00:06 Nazzy intel branded chassis are pretty horrible ... terrible rail kits every time I get one through here
00:06 speed-pc ughh a gameboy?
00:06 Cprossu_Laptop making assembly code to run on a massively parallel archetecture is a pain in the ass
00:06 Cprossu_Laptop gameboy is ARM
00:06 Nazzy hp ones are ok, but they don't really impress me much
00:06 Cprossu_Laptop so in this case, easy.
00:06 Cprossu_Laptop you'll find ARM easier than 8085.
00:07 speed-pc i have a gameboy advanced emulator
00:07 Nazzy the best rack kit I've come across is the dells with the rails that you can extend and lock clear of the rack so you don't have to derack to work on it
00:07 speed-pc would i be able to write code for it?
00:07 Cprossu_Laptop but keep in mind
00:07 Cprossu_Laptop you have to build code for the system
00:07 Cprossu_Laptop not just for the processor
00:07 speed-pc oh
00:07 Cprossu_Laptop your gameboy advanced is actually 2 processors big if I recall
00:08 Cprossu_Laptop and you have to keep the display controller in mind
00:08 Cprossu_Laptop ooooh (Watches auction hunters)
00:08 Cprossu_Laptop be back later
00:09 speed-pc o_o
00:09 speed-pc ok
00:09 wannabe1987 hi speed-pc
00:10 speed-pc whi wannabe
00:10 speed-pc hi*
00:10 wannabe1987 why?  cuz i'm specia
00:10 Monty-Python_ joined #thegeekgroup
00:10 speed-pc lol typo
00:11 Cprossu_Laptop Nazzy: btw I don't hate intel chasis as much as I hate istar's or tyan's =P
00:12 Nazzy istar ... don't think we've had many of them through ... we've a couple of tyan chassis... they over heat like crazy
00:12 wannabe1987 speed-pc does your dog eat ants
00:13 speed-pc no
00:13 Cprossu Nazzy: I don't think tyan knows how to do thermals
00:13 wannabe1987 mine does.  should i be worried
00:13 Cprossu Sun knows only one way.... OVERDO IT
00:13 speed-pc thats creepy
00:13 Monty-Python_ left #thegeekgroup
00:13 speed-pc i dont know mutch about dogs. my dog seams to like to liks ...things sometimes
00:13 Cprossu which is just fine until you pull a sun aside for dev work and it's in the same room as you =P
00:14 speed-pc lick&*
00:14 Nazzy Ah yes ... Sun ... highest rate of fan tray failures of anything we've used
00:14 wannabe1987 yay they're home from detroit
00:15 Nazzy generally really solid though, and normally very rock solid actually
00:15 Cprossu Nazzy: when you have 12 fans in a chasis that should have 3, that's what happens lol
00:15 Cprossu all delta high rpm too
00:16 speed-pc who id home
00:16 speed-pc is
00:16 Cprossu and if you don't replace the fans yourself/don't have a service contract for them they are expensiveeeeee
00:16 Nazzy sun stuff is always expensive
00:17 Nazzy I think we have a pretty hefty service contract though
00:17 eadthem sun is now orical
00:17 eadthem so imo  they nolonger exist
00:17 BigTank joined #thegeekgroup
00:17 Cprossu lol I remember paying sun $150...... for an hd tray once
00:17 Nazzy eadthem, not exactly... Oracle is actually still operating the hardware as Sun Microsystems
00:17 masterofmonks I once got a steal on a Sun graphical workstation monitor.
00:18 BigTank hello geeks, what happened to the stream?
00:18 eadthem ya  but its oracle
00:18 speed-mobile Hi BigTank
00:18 Nazzy not exactly ... and Oracle have buggered the rest of Sun's stuff
00:18 eadthem the same company that told the open office volunteers that it was a conflit of intrest to also help with koffice
00:18 masterofmonks It was a 21" monitor that I paid $10 forback in 2002
00:19 eadthem thats why its now called libreoffice
00:19 wannabe1987 hi masterofmonks
00:19 BigTank no stream today?
00:19 masterofmonks Hello wannabe1987
00:19 wannabe1987 BigTank they were off in a different city today
00:19 eadthem mysql and mariadb had a similar issue
00:20 BigTank oh ya the detroit trip right?
00:20 Nazzy eadthem, as I said, buggered :p

00:21 Cprossu lol what current hdd manufacturer do you hate the most Nazzy? I hate WD with Samsung as a close second
00:22 Nazzy we don't have much problems with WD, but these days we only buy in RE class ones
00:23 Nazzy Samsung are filtering out of the pool... hitachi are nice ... hate maxtor thouh
00:23 Cprossu I haven't been impressed with the chinese seagates, but all others have been solid for me
00:23 Nazzy not keen on seagate either
00:24 Cprossu the thailand seagates have been working well for me
00:24 Cprossu and pretty much anything not labeled china
00:24 Nazzy actually now I think about it, hitachi have done some screw ups ... but they do make 3TB drives

00:24 Cprossu if I get a hitachi.... 2.5"
00:24 Cprossu they are solid

00:26 wannabe1987 thanks BotSteve
00:26 BotSteve You're welcome, wannabe1987
00:26 Cprossu I still like the SLC ssd's
00:26 Nazzy wannabe1987, don't boil it :p
00:26 Cprossu and I'd take an intel over anything else out there
00:27 Cprossu despite any speed penalties
00:27 wannabe1987 Nazzy, duh?
00:27 wannabe1987 and i won't put it in the dryer
00:27 Cprossu sandforce drives make me cringe
00:27 Python left #thegeekgroup
00:27 Nazzy yeah, intel SSDs are nice too
00:27 eadthem sandforce     better be SSD
00:28 eadthem a name like sandforce makes me cringe when i think of high precision spinning platters with heads gliding microns above them
00:29 Cprossu lol I don't think anything that uses subpar quality mlc and data compression in the same breath could be anything close to 'reliable'
00:29 eadthem mlc?
00:29 eadthem you know thats 1 thing that nobodys done yet
00:29 eadthem hardware whole disk compression on the HDD
00:29 Cprossu .w mlc
00:30 BotSteve "In electronics, a multi-level cell (MLC) is a memory element capable of storing more than a single bit of information." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_cell
00:30 Cprossu yes it's been done
00:30 eadthem ie to turn a 1TB drive in to a 1.5TB drive
00:30 eadthem realy?
00:30 Cprossu yes
00:30 Cprossu and it turned out terrible
00:30 eadthem realy?
00:30 Cprossu the result was if the controller failed you were SOL
00:30 eadthem o well i ment part of the HDD
00:30 Cprossu same issue
00:30 speed-pc e how?
00:30 Cprossu controller fails, you're screwed
00:31 eadthem is that much diffrent than a regular hdd?
00:31 Nazzy oh yea ... controller level compression is horrible
00:31 Cprossu no you can still recover it
00:31 eadthem ya by putting a replacement card on the drive
00:31 Nazzy so is encryption
00:31 Cprossu you just need another hdd the same manufacture week
00:31 Cprossu eadthem: you can't do that if the map of compression is on a controller card
00:31 Cprossu it just doesn't work,
00:31 eadthem well ya thats stupid to put that kind of thing on the cards flash
00:32 eadthem load it in to the cards ram
00:32 Cprossu ....
00:32 eadthem from disk
00:32 Cprossu it used ram caching
00:32 Cprossu it still sucked
00:32 Cprossu trust me
00:32 BigTank left #thegeekgroup
00:32 Cprossu reliability wise it really blows
00:32 eadthem to hear it was purely reliablty issues  tells me that   its all soveable
00:33 eadthem by a company that intends to put forward the effort
00:33 Cprossu and then their solution will cost more than just getting more drives
00:34 Cprossu and will have a distinct disadvantage
00:34 Cprossu restoring a failed compressed disk
00:34 Cprossu will take much longer than one that isn't
00:34 eadthem i would think you would just settle on a simple fixed algarithim and do it in FPGA/CPLD
00:35 Cprossu and how much is this FPGA controller going to cost?
00:35 eadthem ergo nothing to load up  and cards would be 100% interchangeable
00:35 eadthem about 1$ per  excluding design cost
00:35 Cprossu negative
00:35 eadthem depending on how large of an array you need tbh
00:35 Cprossu again negative
00:35 Cprossu you are looking at a $600 controller card.
00:36 eadthem im talking the chp
00:36 eadthem chip
00:36 Cprossu with a $1400 retail
00:36 eadthem not a card with its own processor
00:36 Cprossu it will have to have it's own processor
00:36 Cprossu remember about the sustained MB/S we need to maintain with a large array and the seemless compression
00:36 eadthem cpld is in the engineering process a gate crossbar chip      in production a  staticly burned gate crossbar chip
00:37 eadthem ie just logic gates
00:37 Cprossu and how do you intend to do data compression and reintegration with that?
00:37 Cprossu on the fly?
00:38 Cprossu without offloading anything to any other processsors
00:38 eadthem all you need is the right algarithim
00:38 Cprossu are you sure you know how data compression works?
00:38 eadthem all the uc has to do is set stuff up     and then the FPGA/CPLD dose all the work
00:38 Cprossu no.
00:39 eadthem im not talking about LZMA or gzip
00:39 Cprossu I'm aware
00:39 eadthem just a simple deflate algrarithim
00:40 Cprossu again I am aware of what you think you mean to do
00:41 Nazzy eadthem, you can't hammer a decent compression algorithm in to a CPLD, too much hell
00:41 eadthem i didnt say decent
00:41 Cprossu the hell comes within conincidences
00:41 Nazzy a standard microprocessor is too slow
00:41 Cprossu because you have to be able to identify when you 'deflate' something in order to make it right again
00:42 Cprossu you can compress all you want, but the trick is the reverse
00:42 eadthem your thinking like you would need to accualy understand the file system  or read the drive blocks at a time
00:42 Cprossu you'll single handedly run into every problem with on the fly encryption on the way, except the need of security part
00:45 Cprossu well how do you expect any operating system to be able to use your product eadthem, unless it presents at least a virtual representation of the actual file system?
00:46 eadthem the os need not know the platters are compressed
00:46 eadthem nether the HDD controller
00:46 Nazzy eadthem, actually there is a practical minmum amount of disk you need to read to decompress part of it
00:46 * speed-pc jumps into chat
00:46 speed-pc alright im here to stay now
00:46 Cprossu or in this case ram space
00:46 Cprossu as his method will be a caching only system
00:46 Cprossu if it were to be fast enough
00:47 Nazzy better compression needs bigger blocks generally
00:47 eadthem park the cpld between the read write head amps and the controler
00:47 Cprossu why?!
00:47 Cprossu do you know how a modern hdd works?!
00:47 Cprossu there's more space than you can access because the hdd's controller takes care of bad cylinders and sectors by itself
00:47 Nazzy if you put it between the head and the controller it wouldn't know where it was or it would have to completely intercept the data :p
00:48 Cprossu it's already a logical block and has been that way forever
00:48 eadthem because then you can use word level compression mehtods that are static
00:48 Cprossu eadthem: you do not know how a newer hdd works
00:48 eadthem i do
00:48 Nazzy also, if you are compressing a 1mbyte block and you want to write 10 bytes, you have to re-compress the whole box
00:48 Cprossu please elaborate, eadthem
00:48 eadthem Nazzy  blocks that are 32 bits wide
00:48 Nazzy word level compression is pointless
00:49 Cprossu the hdd records data in an analog fashion
00:49 eadthem but you can implment it in a static gate array
00:49 speed-pc alalog?
00:49 speed-pc analog?
00:49 speed-pc zoinks
00:50 Nazzy lossless compression functions by finding a simpler expression of a complex data set... the smaller the data set the less repetition can exist
00:50 eadthem yes   and the read write head amp/controller dose all the conversion
00:50 Cprossu it may be that when you read it you can get a digital signal through an AD convertor but it's analog.
00:50 speed-pc zoinks
00:50 Cprossu and you don't know how the hdd actually does it's magic or where it's recording
00:51 eadthem after the conversion to digtial is done and all the sectoring crap  and all the attempting to recover trash without loosing anything crap
00:51 Cprossu the voltages going to the write heads aren't the data you are trying to write verbatim
00:51 eadthem you put the cpld    and then right after that you put the IO controler and assoicated cache ram
00:51 * Cprossu facepalms
00:51 * Cprossu runs away
00:52 Cprossu need a beer, Nazca while I look through my fridge?
00:52 Cprossu *Nazzy
00:52 speed-mobile Nuuuuuuuu
00:52 Nazzy nah, at work
00:52 speed-mobile NOOOOOOO
00:52 eadthem and Nazzy ya   the compression woudlnt be good
00:52 Nazzy if the compression isn't good, why bother? ;)
00:52 eadthem but it wouldnt have a speed penalty as its a hardware solution
00:53 * Cprossu hands Nazzy a Mtn. Dew Throwback instead
00:53 speed-mobile ?
00:53 speed-mobile Mtn dew FTW
00:53 speed-mobile BRB
00:53 speed-mobile imah get some mountian dew
00:53 eadthem and i didnt say it would be worth doing    i just said it can be done in a safe manner without increasing failure rate or difficulty of recovery
00:54 eadthem or reductions in speed   or with large CPUs and ram to do the work
00:54 wannabe1987 http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/mythbusters-fixing-a-flat-multiangles.html#mkcpgn=fbdsc17 o.O
00:55 Nazzy eadthem, it can be done safely, sure ... but what's the point because it does nothing worth doing
00:55 eadthem but with the compression between the head amps and its controller stuff  and  the accual io controller and its ram cache   any compression accheved would also = a speed increase
00:56 speed-pc im back
00:56 * speed-pc sips
00:56 Nazzy but you don't get a speed increase by compression at that level
00:56 * speed-pc drip some on himself
00:56 speed-pc darn
00:56 eadthem mmm prob could get 10 maby 30%
00:56 eadthem size boost
00:56 Cprossu ^ this is the premise of why I hate sandforce SSD's and why their 'speed increases' are false
00:56 wannabe1987 typical male move. speed-pc
00:57 Nazzy eadthem, where do you think the bottle neck on storage occurs?
00:57 eadthem Nazzy  why not?   if  your compression is via a hardware chip with no ALU   and persay  10% of the time you could read in 66 bits and get out say 128 bits
00:58 speed-pc is now known as speed
00:58 Nazzy the biggest bottle neck on the storage hardware itself is seek time, not read time
00:58 eadthem right
00:58 Nazzy the second biggest is the bus
00:59 eadthem it would only have an effect on sustaned transfer rate from the disk
00:59 Nazzy your compression idea does nothing for either
00:59 Nazzy in the real world you don't do sustained transfer
00:59 speed discs are semi sequential
00:59 speed and thus not as fast as flash
00:59 masterofmonks Cprossu: what level licence do you have?
00:59 Ponko92 left #thegeekgroup
01:00 eadthem if you manage any sustaned transfer   then its the bottle neck
01:00 speed not as fast*
01:00 Ponko92 joined #thegeekgroup
01:00 Nazzy they're only vaugly sequential if you're using the disk regularly
01:01 speed what is the difference between flash and ram?
01:01 Nazzy volatility
01:01 Nazzy life span
01:01 Nazzy access rates
01:01 eadthem holding data without power
01:01 speed ram is faster?
01:01 eadthem yes
01:01 speed oh
01:02 eadthem btw  Nazzy  the same cpld idea would work on a flash disk as well
01:02 eadthem in that case it would be between the flash chip and the io chip(usb sata.. whatever)
01:03 Nazzy you're still not accepting the simple flaw that compression doesn't work on 32bit chunks
01:03 Nazzy there isn't enough repetition
01:03 eadthem have you ever dissassembled a binary?
01:03 Nazzy yes
01:03 Nazzy have you ever studied isolated 32bit sections of it? :p
01:03 speed i always thought is was funny that  in my trainer, the adress of the data in memory is bigger than the actual data stored in that adress
01:03 eadthem unless it said UPX in the first section  quite likely there wer huge chunks of 0s    aka code caves
01:04 Cprossu eadthem: have you ever seen how many ways you can incorrectly dissassmble a binary?
01:04 eadthem the other low hanging frute would be text files
01:05 Nazzy um, no ... compressing text files is efficient only because there is a repeating pattern that can be optimised away
01:05 eadthem right
01:05 Nazzy that pattern disappeared at smaller bit widths
01:05 eadthem somewhat  but not fully
01:05 Cprossu even the best disassemblers have to guess at instructions when put into certain circumstances
01:05 Nazzy also, compression in to fixed block sizes will either not work or be hideously inefficient
01:06 speed in moddern memory howw much data is storred in each memory location?
01:06 speed 64-bit?
01:06 eadthem how big is the memory location?
01:06 Nazzy depends on your architecture
01:06 speed in my trainer its 16 bit
01:06 Nazzy depends on your memory controller
01:07 speed but in modern computers
01:07 speed what would it nbe
01:07 speed be*
01:07 eadthem each address is to 8 bits    but thats not counting pageing and other things
01:07 Cprossu he probably just want to knows, say in X86_64 under a 64bit OS with 4GB of ram, what is he looking at xD
01:07 speed yes
01:07 Cprossu as those locations would better match reality for a valid comparison
01:08 eadthem typicaly the os / branch predition / memory controller  would fetch a page or partial page at once
01:08 Nazzy memory is basically addressed in 8 bit quantities in any sane architecture
01:08 * masterofmonks pokes Cprossu
01:08 Cprossu hey masterofmonks, what's new?
01:08 speed its alyays 8-bit?
01:08 Nazzy in modern stuff, yes
01:08 masterofmonks [20:59] <masterofmonks> Cprossu: what level licence do you have?
01:08 speed wow
01:08 Cprossu keeping away from the toxic waste I suppose
01:09 masterofmonks Cprossu: Fro about a year now.
01:09 speed there anny reason that hasnt changed?
01:09 Cprossu I thought the address size could be up to 44bit on x86_64 once you count in the overhead
01:09 Nazzy it used to vary, but it's stabilalised
01:09 Cprossu ooooh lol just tech, masterofmonks
01:09 masterofmonks Ah.
01:09 Cprossu gonna get a general soon
01:09 Cprossu if I don't lazy out of it
01:09 masterofmonks I am thinking about trying for tech and general in the same day.
01:09 Cprossu do it it's worth it
01:09 speed i mean that really suprisses me
01:10 eadthem i mean ram chip or ram rank level    its 32 or 64 or 128 or even 256 bits at once  but    they just work voodoo with the least siginficant bits to isolate the 8 bit sections in that
01:10 Cprossu I missed the general by 3 questions
01:10 speed doesent it match the dada buss?
01:10 Cprossu and I didn't even study for general
01:10 speed data?
01:10 masterofmonks http://www.hamwhisperer.com
01:10 masterofmonks Good stuff here.
01:10 Cprossu masterofmonks: http://www.arrl.org/question-pools
01:10 Nazzy speed, basically a byte is defined as the smalled addressable block of memory... and generally the byte is defined as 8bits
01:10 Cprossu I aced the tech
01:11 Cprossu 45 mins to study is all I had
01:11 Cprossu so I read the entire question pool
01:11 masterofmonks Cprossu: Basically the same thing, but with a bit of explanination.
01:11 Cprossu right before the test
01:11 speed oh. but it can varry?
01:11 eadthem Nazzy btw  i did do a  2 or maby 3 clock cycle per byte  sequental compression algarithim for my  talking atmel stuff
01:11 Nazzy eadthem, actual data is probably organised in bus width chunks
01:11 * speed mind has been blown
01:11 eadthem Nazzy true
01:12 speed how does it varry?
01:12 Nazzy speed, the byte used to be 7 bits on some systems
01:12 masterofmonks The only problem I have is that the test day is 09 July and the general question pool expired nine days prior to that.
01:12 Cprossu masterofmonks: you proficient in CW? because you could nab extra without much work
01:12 eadthem wonder what i did with the ASM i did for that
01:12 masterofmonks Cprossu: Not at all.
01:12 Cprossu masterofmonks: same pool as me then
01:12 Cprossu lol
01:13 masterofmonks CW is the bane of my existance.
01:13 masterofmonks Ok, that's not really true.
01:13 Nazzy eadthem, I'm telling you, compression and encryption quality is proportional to the block size and only function properly if you can do blocks sequentially
01:13 eadthem they dont require code anymore do they?
01:13 Cprossu it would come in handy though
01:13 Nazzy the data packing formats fall apart on random access
01:13 masterofmonks eadthem: Only for Extra I believe.
01:13 Cprossu yeah they haven't for a few years now eadthem
01:13 Nazzy there's also the problem that if you have non-proportional compression, the addressing goes to hell
01:14 eadthem Nazzy  it was for audio  and it did a 8 bit premap  and then 8 blocks of data  ither 4 or 8 bits in lenght depending on the bit for that block in the  premap
01:14 Nazzy lets say you have two 32 bit blocks ... one is just a 0 and can be safely compressed in to a single bit ... the other is a right evil thing that has to be stored as the full 32 bits
01:15 eadthem ya so you would at minimum need 33 bits for the full block
01:15 eadthem if say the first bit was the  0 flag   and if it was set then it would assume that whole thing was 0
01:16 eadthem and then the next bit would start the next word
01:16 Nazzy you have two choices... promise every block 32 bits to deal with the second case, or write some crazy behavior that can translate where the controller thinks the data is to where it actually is
01:16 eadthem but if it wasnt 0 it would need 33 bits
01:17 eadthem that of corse wouldnt get anywhere because most of the words would need the 33 bits
01:17 Nazzy this is true, you need to devote a few bits to empty space that increases the size of your block
01:17 eadthem if you used 2 bits   then  you might get somewhere    depending on the type of data stored
01:17 Nazzy trust me when I say that drive backed random access lossless compression is never a good idea
01:18 Nazzy if you want to know why, consider a 32bit key sized encryption algorithm
01:19 eadthem idealy you would have a  bit for compressed or  full   then the next bit would be 8 bit with  or  diffrence from last
01:20 eadthem of corse diffrence from last would require  starting at the begenning of a larger block to read it
01:20 Nazzy and now you're starting to make it bigger
01:20 eadthem ya
01:20 Nazzy you do know that it is possible to compress data and have the result be larger than the source, right?
01:20 eadthem and if everthings or most is needing the full block  then your SOL and you wont even get advertised capacity
01:21 * speed thinks
01:21 eadthem yes thats what i was sugesting earlyer
01:21 eadthem when i said 1 bit would probably get you nowhere
01:21 speed so if the data buss if 64 bits wide, that means it can do 8 instructions at once?
01:21 eadthem not realy
01:21 speed -___-
01:21 eadthem means it loads 64 bits at once
01:22 masterofmonks Hey Cprossu Why mention CW for the Extra license, it's not required any more.
01:22 speed but each instruction is 8 bits
01:22 eadthem in 1 clock or for DDR DDR2 DDR3  1/2 of a clock
01:22 speed what does it do with the other bits?
01:22 eadthem accualy what is the instruciton size on x86
01:22 eadthem its 16 or 32 bits isnt it?
01:22 Nazzy the instruction size on an x86 is 32bits
01:23 Nazzy I'm reasonable sure it is anyhow
01:23 eadthem i beleve your right
01:23 speed so.....
01:23 speed ohh
01:24 eadthem you on your stream?
01:24 speed me?
01:24 speed ughhh no
01:24 speed want me to be?
01:24 eadthem ya   ither that or ventrilo or  teamtalk
01:24 Nazzy generally it will load in the 32bits of instruction and 32 bits of instruction params
01:24 Cprossu masterofmonks: really?
01:24 eadthem mubmle
01:24 Cprossu masterofmonks: wow
01:24 speed whats team talk
01:24 eadthem perhaps teamspeak if you realy must
01:24 speed ...
01:24 eadthem teamtalk is like ventrilo on steroids
01:25 exor674 ...
01:25 masterofmonks http://www.arrl.org/upgrading-to-an-extra-license
01:25 eadthem it works on a dial up modem and sounds better than vent
01:25 Cprossu masterofmonks: what class requires 5wpm morse then?
01:25 Nazzy if your minimum load size is more than your instruction it just shoves it in the cache
01:25 masterofmonks None.
01:25 eadthem and has less bullshit going on as well as less CPU ussage
01:25 speed skype?
01:25 speed lol
01:25 eadthem ok stream then :p
01:25 Nazzy to be honest, it will load a lot more from ram than one instruction
01:26 masterofmonks Makes that extra licence look much more attractive doesn't it?
01:26 Nazzy it may well load in a full 4k
01:26 speed ok
01:26 eadthem bahhh    i was about to get on my vent server and i realised     its on the windows server    witch would require a mess to get it back online
01:26 Cprossu masterofmonks: the next exam is the 20th
01:26 masterofmonks For you?
01:26 Cprossu I might take the general and the extra the same day lol
01:26 Cprossu yeah for me
01:27 wannabe1987 .c 8/60
01:27 BotSteve 0.133333333
01:27 speed how manny instructions can it execute at once?
01:27 masterofmonks For me it's the 9th.
01:27 eadthem typicaly  the systme will requrest 1 full page of ram
01:27 speed mabe thats what i should have said
01:27 wannabe1987 .c 60/8
01:27 BotSteve 7.5
01:27 Nazzy speed, depends on the processor
01:27 eadthem speed do you know C++ and OOP stuff?
01:27 masterofmonks I might just shoot for Extra.
01:27 speed no
01:27 Cprossu I have 9 days if I blow off today
01:27 Cprossu that's plenty
01:27 speed i just know assembely for an 8085 and like 10% of it
01:27 Cprossu yeah shoot for extra, might as well
01:27 masterofmonks Cprossu: Do you QRP?
01:27 Nazzy a board has X processors, each processor has Y cores, each core has Z pipelines
01:28 eadthem speed ok you get that atleats 90% of the executed code is repeted several times or is in a loop?
01:28 Cprossu I'll do whatever I can as soon as I get the hardware to, masterofmonks
01:28 Cprossu so for now I scan and echolink lol
01:28 Cprossu which isn't the same =(
01:28 Nazzy in that case the board should be able to execute X+Y+Z ops at once
01:28 speed yes
01:28 masterofmonks Cprossu: QRP is mostly stuff you build yourself.
01:28 speed routines
01:28 speed like system idle process
01:28 speed ys?
01:28 Cprossu still I have to have at least a base rig to work from
01:29 masterofmonks Oh no...
01:29 Cprossu so I know if my stuff will even work
01:29 Nazzy a GPU can execute far more operations at once, but doesn't execute each one as fast
01:29 eadthem k  when the system loads up a page of ram  to the cpu cache it will quite likely contain  the memory requred for the programs data in the area it will be executing   and  contain the Assembler hex of that area of the program
01:30 speed no?
01:30 masterofmonks There are lot and lots of schematics available that are highly tested, and kits, and everything you could want.
01:30 eadthem typicaly that kind of a move is done when the os switches process
01:30 eadthem depending on how big the cpu cache is
01:30 * speed oops
01:30 speed didnt see that
01:30 * speed reads
01:30 masterofmonks But you are working with about 5W of power.
01:30 Cprossu lol just like the handheld I'll likely buy
01:31 masterofmonks Makes it small and very portable.
01:31 eadthem and typicaly that kind of a move is done without direct cpu invervention or ALU attention  while  process 1 is executing
01:31 eadthem ie  the loading of the ram page for process 2
01:31 BotSteve In the last hour, there have been 1 new posts on the Geek Group forums.  New posts made by: kiwifrog on .02 ma draw is killing my batteries! HELP? 555 flashing duty circuit with touch control.
01:32 eadthem the problem is when the cpus branch predition guesses the wrong page of ram it will need  say if it needs more than 1 page for the program  witch is quite typical
01:32 speed that stinks
01:32 eadthem thats a page fault  and then the process it typicaly halted the next one is exeucted and during that  the missing page is loaded
01:32 speed how does it pridct that
01:33 eadthem the branch prediciton system can probbably fill several books
01:33 masterofmonks The idea of building my own QRP rigs makes me get all excited with the possibele hackery.
01:33 eadthem the one in a modern amd and intel cpu
01:33 speed oh
01:33 Cprossu lol masterofmonks: I just prefer clear signals
01:33 Cprossu or tubes
01:33 Cprossu I plan on building a nice drake tube driven rig one of these days
01:33 Cprossu love the sound ^_^
01:34 eadthem it estmates ahead of the ALU several instrucitons at a time and based on current data for  say  a if statemnt  it estmates if the statement is taken or not
01:34 masterofmonks Small, highly tuned directional antennas.
01:34 eadthem now said data may be changed by the next ALU operation   witch means the branch prediction is possably wrong
01:35 eadthem and it can be repredicted or  just left alone    also it  looks ahead in the to be executed code and assumed branching for data not in pages currently in the L1 L2 or L3 cache
01:36 eadthem the OS can also help by keeping track of what needs what page and forcing a preload of pages that may also be needed
01:36 masterofmonks Actually.. thinking about it.. aluminized spray paint would be great for making a "cantenna" style directional anteanna out of PVC.
01:37 eadthem and as far as the cpu lvl branch prediciton goes  thats all done in hardware   and when i say hardware   i mean descreet logic gates acting without the need of a alu or source code
01:38 Cprossu_Laptop masterofmonks: this way you could have your pringles and altoids
01:38 speed huh
01:38 masterofmonks Cprossu: Exactly.
01:39 eadthem i mean its a static function  hardwired in to the layout of the chip
01:39 masterofmonks It's easy, and it's hackery of the highest degree.
01:39 Cprossu_Laptop I'm not fond of altoids containers as project boxes though
01:39 InteliWasp joined #thegeekgroup
01:39 Cprossu_Laptop I think they suck =P
01:39 eadthem old pc power supplys make great project boxes
01:39 eadthem if you need that size
01:39 masterofmonks Cprossu: What do you prefer?
01:39 Cprossu_Laptop 3 1/2" floppy containers
01:39 eadthem and if you know where to get them they will be anywhere from free to a fue dollers each
01:39 Cprossu_Laptop as in the tough plastic ones
01:40 Cprossu_Laptop or VHS plastic containers too
01:40 eadthem ive done a lot of hot glue containers myself
01:40 masterofmonks Wow, I absolutely loathe both of those.
01:40 InteliWasp is the stream down?
01:40 eadthem or hot glue coating
01:40 eadthem speed  what degree are you takeing?
01:40 eadthem o and if your on stream i dont have the link
01:40 speed degree?
01:41 Cprossu_Laptop http://174.123.135.195/uploads05/19/0/Untitled-817614520.jpg
01:41 Cprossu_Laptop ^ masterofmonks
01:41 masterofmonks Cprossu: Seriously I had forgotten that either of those existed, and just how much I didn't like them.
01:41 eadthem i mean your taking this class or the one i was helping you study for a while back
01:41 eadthem days ago
01:41 eadthem mmm was that last night? :p
01:41 masterofmonks It's the texture of the plastic on them.
01:41 speed micro processors
01:41 eadthem ya but what degree?
01:41 speed (thats the name of the calss)
01:42 eadthem computer science  electronics enginering   computer engineering?
01:42 speed ughhh, i dont get annything for that specifically, i dont think
01:42 masterofmonks eadthem: I think it's a Comtia A+
01:42 speed but im also in comptia
01:42 Cprossu_Laptop masterofmonks: and these -> http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/m/mjo3paLiZt35cPTZnXDiYbQ/140.jpg
01:43 eadthem o i thougt you wer in collage
01:43 speed im in a trade school
01:43 Cprossu_Laptop I'd rather use those any day than altoids containers
01:43 Nazzy <eadthem> old pc power supplys make great project boxes <--- interesting ... I'm using a sandwich box as a power supply project box
01:43 Cprossu_Laptop I drop an altoids container, and it's done
01:43 speed my backpack and there website says its a college
01:43 Cprossu_Laptop I've never liked that end of it =(
01:43 eadthem laptop bricks
01:43 astro73|derrial I love game night
01:43 eadthem wall warts
01:43 eadthem if they arent glued together
01:43 Bat-Mobile joined #thegeekgroup
01:43 Cprossu_Laptop everything looks so awesome in an altoids container, until you drop it.
01:44 eadthem Cprossu_Laptop pack it with hot glue
01:44 masterofmonks Cprossu: that is what proper mounting is for.
01:44 speed and there caller id says there a university
01:44 Cprossu_Laptop Nazzy: some of those sandwich boxes are awesome
01:44 eadthem or parafin wax if you think you will need to modify it later
01:44 speed so...idk
01:44 masterofmonks And I am seriously not beyond filling a project box with resin.
01:44 Cprossu_Laptop I never ever ever am "finished" with a project
01:44 eadthem naw i thougt you wer doing it for a class    what grade are you in?
01:45 Cprossu_Laptop I always have the urge to pull something apart and build it differently
01:45 Cprossu_Laptop so having things modular appeals to me
01:45 speed i graduated highschool last year
01:45 eadthem masterofmonks ya thats why i sugest the parafin     just stickit in the oven at 150F  and then it will all be melted off    rest shuld scrape down easaly
01:45 speed im in "eastwik college"
01:45 masterofmonks Cprossu: so QRP should appeal to you.
01:45 Cprossu_Laptop and at the same time I want it indestructable
01:45 Cprossu_Laptop because I am a klutz
01:45 eadthem well what are you studying for
01:46 speed computer electronics
01:46 eadthem programming or   circutboard type enginerrring
01:46 masterofmonks You could actually build a stackable altoids tin module carrier.
01:46 eadthem do you want to make the motherboard  and its chips  or do you want to write the operating systme and bios?
01:46 Nazzy Cprossu, I needed something shit cheap and reasonably insulated ... plastic lunch box ftw
01:46 Cprossu_Laptop lol masterofmonks: a hotswap altoids tin backplane
01:47 speed-mobile ...zoinks. I was never asked that. Idk
01:47 eadthem ya know  plastic and glass jars also work ok
01:47 eadthem but thers some challanges to that kind of case
01:47 masterofmonks Admit it it's genius.
01:47 Nazzy oooooh, hot swap altoids, that is a brilliant idea
01:47 Cprossu_Laptop I have to say that is awesome
01:48 speed-mobile It was more like "do i want to be a bench tech, a+, net admi. Or programmer"
01:48 speed-mobile Admin
01:48 masterofmonks The really really bad part is that I work at an aluminum fabrication plant and could whip something like that up *easy*
01:48 Cprossu_Laptop you could have dedicated pins for audio in/out, power pins for different voltages, grounds to make it all happen
01:48 Cprossu_Laptop and a few "general" pins
01:49 Cprossu_Laptop that way you could build say different amplification modules/etc
01:49 masterofmonks have a a tin that has a couple of Li-ion batteries in it for powering the whole thing...
01:49 eadthem ile tell ya right now   bench tech can be fun   but also includes  robotics programming   inspection  and such
01:49 Cprossu_Laptop that's fucking genius
01:49 Cprossu_Laptop which way would they insert?
01:49 eadthem but if your in to electronics then its the hardware  very low level aproch
01:49 Cprossu_Laptop sideways would be best I think
01:50 eadthem if your doing programming  not so much low level  (my low level is a pile of transistors)
01:50 Nazzy one thing that really sucks about being in europe is no damn altoids tins
01:50 Cprossu_Laptop how would you like doing edge connectors, masterofmonks?
01:50 masterofmonks Cprossu: the altoids tins, stack the verticle, witht he connections on the sides.
01:50 Cprossu_Laptop so you could build the edge connector in the pcb
01:50 Cprossu_Laptop I like the idea of having one side of the tins for 'controls'
01:51 masterofmonks Right.
01:51 speed-mobile Wow
01:51 Cprossu_Laptop so 36pin should be enough
01:51 Cprossu_Laptop plus you can key it
01:51 masterofmonks Controls and jacks on one side, and connections on the opposite side.
01:51 Cprossu_Laptop wait
01:51 Cprossu_Laptop ribbon cables!
01:51 Cprossu_Laptop SWEET
01:51 Cprossu_Laptop ribbon cable backplane!
01:52 masterofmonks Cprossu: now you suddenly love altoids tins?
01:52 Cprossu_Laptop 36 pin floppy connectors
01:52 Cprossu_Laptop no.
01:52 Cprossu_Laptop but it's an epic idea
01:52 Cprossu_Laptop and I Can still use it on floppy cases
01:52 speed-mobile What if i were to transfer to a nother school
01:53 speed-mobile Say, NJIT
01:53 masterofmonks Whoa.... wait...

01:53 tggmc1 do you see us?
01:54 speed-mobile What should i do.

01:54 Cprossu_Laptop let me check tggmc1, you've been down the entire day
01:54 Cprossu_Laptop tggmc1 still down
01:54 masterofmonks You can put a hole in the four corners of your chosen project box, use a single nut as a spacer between boxes...
01:55 Cprossu_Laptop masterofmonks: nah
01:55 Cprossu_Laptop it always seems awesome to do it with threaded rod until you actually do it
01:55 * speed-mobile spins around on the floor
01:55 Cprossu_Laptop tggmc1: we're off air, do you read us?
01:56 SparkyProjects tggmc1, if you have output, you may need to restart adobe
01:56 SparkyProjects steve had to do that yesterday
01:57 * Cprossu_Laptop *tries a tggmc1 pm*
01:57 tggmc1 hello
01:57 Cprossu_Laptop you are down, tggmc1
01:57 tggmc1 restarting stream shortly
01:57 Cprossu_Laptop thx.
01:58 SparkyProjects we see you
01:58 Cprossu_Laptop I SparkyProjects: ????
01:58 SparkyProjects stream, but it's gone again
01:58 * speed-mobile does a flip in midair
01:58 tggmc1 we are rebooting the systenm
01:58 SparkyProjects ok
01:59 eadthem speed-mobile  what do you want to do?
01:59 masterofmonks Cprossu: What's so bad about using allthread?
01:59 Cprossu_Laptop good luck, tggmc1
01:59 masterofmonks i have never had much of a problem with it in my uses.
01:59 Cprossu_Laptop masterofmonks: taking one unit in the middle off of a 10 unit stack
01:59 Cprossu_Laptop I made a little uatx cluster using it
01:59 Cprossu_Laptop and regretted it when the middle motherboard died
01:59 eadthem it gets dinged up a bit in handling
02:00 eadthem o nvm
02:00 speed-mobile I dont know. I went from ohms law to logic gates to programming to a+
02:00 speed-mobile The only thing i dind like was net +
02:00 speed-mobile And i liked microprossesors the most
02:00 masterofmonks Cprossu: a valid argument.
02:00 Cprossu_Laptop each motherboard had 2 nylon washers and 2 nuts x 4
02:00 eadthem that would be the hardware engeering portion
02:01 Cprossu_Laptop masterofmonks: my hands were RAW afterwards
02:01 eadthem Cprossu_Laptop what about using small sections of all thread and bolt linkers
02:01 masterofmonks I work in industry handeling razor sharp aluminum all day, I don't think that would be an issue for me.
02:01 eadthem couplers
02:01 eadthem allthread couplers
02:01 speed-mobile I didnt do hardware yet
02:01 speed-mobile Didnt^*
02:02 masterofmonks eadthem has a damn good point.
02:02 Cprossu_Laptop couplers would work
02:02 Cprossu_Laptop but something that snaps together would be cooler
02:02 Cprossu_Laptop and has a clamp system on the outer
02:02 Cprossu_Laptop so you could undo one set and it would come apart like legos
02:03 masterofmonks Ah!
02:03 masterofmonks Only put nuts on the ends.
02:03 SparkyProjects Question for computer geeks, if you do a restart on windows (not full shutdown andreboot), am i correct in thinking that it's just windows that restarts, and that the power supply rails stay live ?
02:03 masterofmonks Put spacers inbetween everything else.
02:03 Cprossu_Laptop actually
02:03 Cprossu_Laptop why the hell
02:03 Cprossu_Laptop do we need spacers?
02:03 Bat-Mobile SparkyProjects: I believe that to be the case, yes.
02:03 masterofmonks Cprossu: ventilation.
02:03 Cprossu_Laptop hmmmm
02:04 SparkyProjects Thannks Bat-mobile
02:04 masterofmonks But your spacers could be 1/4 inch thick washers for that matter.
02:04 eadthem http://final.servegame.com/public/itx/done/ http://final.servegame.com/public/itx/  this is what i did for my router/server combo    the goal was to get both in the same compact case  using only 1 atx psu (because together they draw only 50W max on a atx silver psu
02:05 Cprossu_Laptop 50 is a little much don't you think?
02:05 eadthem http://final.servegame.com/public/itx/iso.png   green is server mobo and server hdd   blue is router mobo and hdd    bottom red is the 140mm fan    yellow back is the mobo tray   yellow front is the HDD mount   red top is the psu
02:05 eadthem 50W for 2 computers
02:05 speed-mobile Wow
02:05 SparkyProjects btw Bat-mobile, just saw a programme about air traffic control about near misses, the controller say they have to think of it like a video game, but only one life
02:05 eadthem not bad considering the previous setup was 200W
02:05 Cprossu_Laptop you could still cut that a bit
02:05 speed-mobile How is that possible?
02:05 eadthem ya
02:05 Cprossu_Laptop did you try using laptop hdd's?
02:06 eadthem naw there 3.5
02:06 Cprossu_Laptop there should be about 10 watts you can save
02:06 speed-mobile I once had a pc that ran on 60 watts
02:06 Bat-Mobile SparkyProjects: that's about right.  They have the scariest motivational posters in the world too.
02:06 Cprossu_Laptop 35-40 watts would be my goal
02:06 speed-mobile But 50 for 2?!
02:06 eadthem servers got a 80GB WD    routers got a 40GB maxtor  that im shure dont have more than a year or 2 left
02:06 Bat-Mobile "RESPONSIBILITY:  Everyone is counting on you"
02:06 Cprossu_Laptop speed-mobile: that's easy to do
02:06 eadthem speed  the cpu is a via eden   7W max
02:06 speed-mobile What the zoinks
02:06 eadthem and its a fanless mobo
02:06 Cprossu_Laptop my router runs on 18 watts of power total
02:06 Cprossu_Laptop and it's a P3 450

02:08 eadthem anyhow thats 1 idea for more than 1 pc in a box
02:08 Cprossu_Laptop the graphics card was the tricky thing
02:08 eadthem what kind of HDD?
02:08 Cprossu_Laptop Seagate 425mb
02:08 Cprossu_Laptop 3.5"
02:09 speed-mobile O_o
02:09 eadthem i shuld disable the GFX card on the router someday    iirc i alredy killed its sound
02:09 Cprossu_Laptop and I am running an Enlight 250watt psu
02:09 Cprossu_Laptop the sound is diabled in the bios
02:09 Cprossu_Laptop so is the parallel port and one of the serials
02:09 Cprossu_Laptop it's an Acer uatx motherboard

02:10 Nazzy definition of too many hits on youtube: the views field looks like a telephone number
02:10 Cprossu_Laptop and 192mb of pc133 running at pc66
02:10 speed-mobile Zoinks
02:10 eadthem ya each have a 1GB stick
02:10 Cprossu_Laptop my replacement firewall
02:10 eadthem aparently the classic ITX mobos from VIA  had ram picky issues
02:10 Cprossu_Laptop uses a itx power supply
02:10 Cprossu_Laptop that uses a 12v wallwart
02:10 eadthem so only thing i could buy was a 1GB stick  and only 512mb wer regonised
02:11 eadthem thats the only major glitch with this build
02:11 Bat-Mobile Nazzy: do you know if "evolution of dance" is still the most popular youtube video in the world?
02:11 Cprossu_Laptop it's athlon64 3000+ socket 939, 1gb ddr stick, 160gb 2.5" hitachi hdd, and 3 gb intel network cards
02:11 Cprossu_Laptop 22 watts.
02:11 Nazzy Bat-Mobile, no idea
02:12 Cprossu_Laptop it's 19 if I take one ethernet card off
02:12 Nazzy I do know that Rebecca Black - Friday has 162687388 views
02:12 Cprossu_Laptop max startup is 22 watts
02:12 Cprossu_Laptop in that config
02:12 Cprossu_Laptop it's 25 watts on startup with the extra nic
02:12 eadthem ya thats the other thing is if i used a ITX psu i might cut a bit more wattage  but   its a seasonic 300W SS-300ET  http://www.seasonicusa.com/atx.htm   80+ bronse
02:12 eadthem so thats hard to beat

02:14 Cprossu_Laptop no video though?
02:14 eadthem the problem with makeing these ITX computers is finding a PSU thats sufficantly low in wattage
02:14 Cprossu_Laptop I hear audio
02:14 Cprossu_Laptop no video
02:14 SparkyProjects yay :)
02:14 Cprossu_Laptop nice
02:15 Cprossu_Laptop we've been down all day
02:15 Cprossu_Laptop ROFL
02:15 eadthem 50 of 300W is alredy at 16%    you need to get up to 30% to 60% for the good efficancy
02:15 speed-mobile is now known as speedrunnerG55
02:16 eadthem all of enermaxes stuff thats 80 + gold is 500W and better
02:16 Nazzy to be fair, Evolution of Dance at leasts deserves it's hits ... he's a bloody good dancer
02:17 Cprossu_Laptop eadthem: I was thinking 500w and multiple computers powered
02:17 SparkyProjects There could be an anti-condennsation heater in that case
02:17 Cprossu_Laptop cause I think 100w is the start of it's sweet spot

02:17 SparkyProjects That's why the sensor

02:17 eadthem maby a 400W psu
02:17 Cprossu_Laptop depends on how good the psu is
02:17 Cprossu_Laptop it's different for every single psu
02:17 Cprossu_Laptop wattage isn't a good way to test it
02:18 Cprossu_Laptop no good rule of thumb
02:18 eadthem its the low end efficancy   80+ dosent require that
02:18 Cprossu_Laptop YAY CAMERA
02:18 eadthem iirc 20% is the minimum for 80+

02:23 Cprossu_Laptop lol I meant phillips
02:23 eadthem other thing i was thinking of was when i built my multichannal audio amp  ile stick it in the bottom of the case and use some 12V power for it
02:23 Cprossu_Laptop it's a video master control
02:23 Cprossu_Laptop not the plastic car
02:23 eightbitbrad lol
02:23 eightbitbrad well, Saturn just evokes bad, bad memories
02:23 eightbitbrad *shudders*

02:24 Cprossu_Laptop becuase he needs a 10B2 controller and the Jupiter network suite loaded on a winNT4 computer
02:24 eadthem they could stand to double the volume on live video   most of the time

04:04 astro73|derrial python is very well documented
04:04 Bat-Mobile Yes speed
04:04 astro73|derrial only rarely has a question not been answered by it
04:05 Python (and python has an awesome set of libraries)
04:05 Python it makes programming with it very easy
04:05 astro73|derrial Several languages have awesome libraries. Python's are just easy to use and well documented
04:07 speedrunnerG55 Librarys of...what
04:07 Python code
04:07 speedrunnerG55 What is the format of it
04:07 astro73|derrial and I think it's the only language that docs are part of the syntax
04:07 Python *functionality
04:07 astro73|derrial speedrunnerG55: libraries are reusable code packaged in a way that can be used without copy/paste
04:08 Python import webserver
04:08 Python and you have a webserver
04:08 speedrunnerG55 Whithout?
04:08 Python ?
04:09 Python (clarify question)
04:10 speedrunnerG55 Whithout coppy and past
04:10 speedrunnerG55 How do i get it then
04:10 Python how do you get libarys ?
04:10 astro73|derrial learn python
04:10 Python *libraries
04:11 speedrunnerG55 Can python be writen in notepad? Or are there prigrams for that
04:11 astro73|derrial it's kinda important and you'll learn it
04:11 Python use IDLE
04:11 astro73|derrial really? IDLE?
04:11 Python default python editor
04:11 Python you can uses anything
04:11 astro73|derrial ok, i guess it's ok, better than notepad
04:12 Python IDLE crashes though
04:12 astro73|derrial but I just can't get over the look of Tk
04:12 speedrunnerG55 Idle?
04:12 Bat-Mobile speedrunnerG55: if you're using notepad for *anything* you're doing it wrong
04:12 Bat-Mobile .g notepad++
04:12 BotSteve Bat-Mobile: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/
04:12 Bat-Mobile .g crimson editor
04:12 BotSteve Bat-Mobile: http://www.crimsoneditor.com/
04:12 Bat-Mobile use either of those two
04:12 Python (if your using windows ...)
04:12 astro73|derrial gedit, too
04:12 Bat-Mobile don't use notepad
04:13 speedrunnerG55 Notepad2
04:13 astro73|derrial there's a bajillion editors available
04:13 Bat-Mobile gedit is good too
04:13 Python not an ide though
04:13 astro73|derrial you don't usually need a full IDE
04:13 Bat-Mobile Python: unfortunately they're not an ide.  But anything's better than notepad.  Except possibly "ed"
04:14 Bat-Mobile or {insert vi / emacs here}
04:14 astro73|derrial Bat-Mobile: I'd insert both
04:14 astro73|derrial If you want an IDE, go for broke and just get eclipse
04:15 Python astro73|derrial: whats your take on netbeans vs eclipse ?
04:15 astro73|derrial considering that eclipse has plugins for pretty much every language?
04:16 Python sure
04:16 speedrunnerG55 8.2 ftw
04:16 speedrunnerG55 Math
04:17 astro73|derrial I haven't used either in years, but pretty much the only reason to use netbeans would be for the gui design and tight integration with the bean framework/pattern/ideology/whatever
04:17 astro73|derrial and, tbh, it doesn't work as well as the glade designer
04:18 astro73|derrial eclipse is pretty much your one-stop-shop for IDEs though, since it has plugins for every major language, VCS, and tool
04:18 astro73|derrial or it sure seems like it
04:18 speedrunnerG55 Once you write python code
04:18 speedrunnerG55 How is it run?
04:18 astro73|derrial get the pydev plugin, it has a run button, iirc
04:19 astro73|derrial (ok, it hooks into eclipse's run button(
04:19 speedrunnerG55 Ohh?
04:20 astro73|derrial it works, trust me
04:20 astro73|derrial I'm sure it's only gotten better since I used it
04:21 astro73|derrial http://pydev.org/
04:22 astro73|derrial but for a first time, just get an editor
04:22 astro73|derrial you don't need a full IDE at all
04:22 astro73|derrial it'll probably get in the way of just playing with python
04:23 astro73|derrial speedrunnerG55: oh, you mean in general?
04:23 speedrunnerG55 Ye
04:24 speedrunnerG55 Xd
04:24 astro73|derrial didn't the tutorial tell you that?
04:24 Python (Idle works quite well for beginners)
04:31 wannabe1987 has anyone ELSE played LBP?
04:32 Python LBP ?

15:09 Cprossu .seen captainboden
15:09 BotSteve At 09:02Z, Cprossu_Laptop asked me to tell masterofmonks to hash out ideas on the forum at http://thegeekgroup.org/bb/electronics/kludgeconnecttm-idea-a-multiple-tiny-project-backplane/#p45303
15:09 BotSteve Cprossu: I last saw captainboden 85.76 hours ago at 2011-06-08 01:24:08 UTC on #thegeekgroup.  Current time: 15:09:39 UTC
15:10 Cprossu I know you don't visit the forums often, but we should really put that concept together
15:10 masterofmonks It's really rather simple I think, expecially if using allthread.
15:11 Cprossu I think they can freestyle that part
15:11 Cprossu for the most part
15:11 Cprossu the part that interests me is making a edge connecting standard
15:12 masterofmonks Ah, you mean for stacking connections?
15:12 masterofmonks So that any tin is connectable to any other disregarding order?
15:12 Cprossu I see the backplane as a ribbon cable for cheapness
15:12 Cprossu basically
15:12 masterofmonks You would need a controller then.
15:13 Cprossu that's the idea, no controller
15:13 masterofmonks Hmm.
15:13 Cprossu just basic busses that are used for similar tasks
15:13 Cprossu I havent thought of uses for the other 1/2 of the pins
15:13 masterofmonks Well first you would need to determine what componants *everyone* woudl want.
15:13 Cprossu or even thought if we should put specific voltage numbers on the standard
15:14 Cprossu in this case I want to build it for amature radio
15:14 Cprossu excess pins can be used to dump other things on
15:14 Cprossu but what I think this could turn into is a modular bus for kludge!
15:15 injektion left #thegeekgroup
15:15 masterofmonks Right, but you would need a different spec depending on the application.
15:16 Cprossu not necessarily
15:16 Cprossu 34 pins is quite a lot to work with
15:16 masterofmonks There is also the other issue.
15:17 masterofmonks There is virtually no shielding on ribbon cable.
15:17 masterofmonks And most of your jumps from tin to tin would be for signal transmission.
15:17 Cprossu that's true so we should leave the top clear at a specific place for BNC connections
15:18 masterofmonks For example a single tin woudl be an oscillator, and a timer to transmit your callsign in CW every ten minutes.
15:18 Cprossu but I did attempt to minimize it on at least one side
15:18 Cprossu masterofmonks: it would feed into the audio bus hopefully
15:19 Cprossu pre amplifier
15:19 masterofmonks that tin would also have a connector to allow for a key.
15:20 injektion joined #thegeekgroup
15:21 masterofmonks How many of these connectors would you have per tin?
15:22 eadthem so has anyone considerd seeing if PBS would show the geek group stuff?
15:23 masterofmonks eadthem: Last I heard Duck was not happy with the idea of a produced television show.
15:23 eadthem produced as in them dictating what woudl be done?
15:23 masterofmonks Right.
15:24 masterofmonks One could speculate on his reasons, but that was the last opinion I heard on it from him.
15:25 eadthem just thinking   contents expensive to make normaly   for a non profit like PBS    given basicly premade professonal content   youd think they would be very willing to work with to keep it comming
15:25 Cprossu well I g2g
15:25 Cprossu bbl.
15:26 Cprossu but masterofmonks, work on the idea, keep it something that's easy to get and hard to screw up in the heat of putting something together

16:44 injektion Bridged tap or bridge tap is a long-used method of cabling for telephone lines. One cable pair (of wires) will "appear" in several different terminal locations (poles or pedestals). This allows the telephone company to use or "assign" that pair to any subscriber near those terminal locations

17:25 Nazzy my mistake was trying to use a airplane nose prop for a quadcop lift prop

17:32 eadthem mmm jimmy jons today for lunch i think
17:32 Nazzy sooo, my quadcop project is on hold til I find a way to fund the purchase of 4 high efficiency motors
17:33 eadthem http://www.castlecreations.com/support/flight_calculator.html
17:33 Nazzy ideally I want something that can crank out 25k rpm with a 9 inch or so diameter prop
17:35 eadthem direct drive?
17:35 Nazzy the motor plus prop is about 76g and produces that much lift at around 50% speed
17:35 Nazzy yeah
17:37 eadthem http://www.ecalc.ch/motorcalc_e.htm?castle
17:37 eadthem i dont know all the propy numbery thingys    but it it will prob help
17:37 Nazzy shouldn't I be using the heli one?
17:38 eadthem varable or fixed pitch
17:38 eadthem ya possably
17:38 eadthem i figured this one might work better for fixed pitch
17:39 eadthem how many volts supply?
17:40 eadthem with no gearing you will need a motor KV around 2000
17:40 Nazzy I've been testing with a bench supply
17:40 eadthem thts assuming 12V
17:41 Nazzy (and 24V motors)
17:41 eadthem the stuff i dont know is  what prop type   what yoke twist  what pitch in inches   and what prop constant
17:45 BotSteve In the last hour, there have been 2 new posts on the Geek Group forums.  New posts made by: Red on Red's Blog [Friday, June 10th 2011].....skyjumper on All terracotta is not equal (or how I burnt my lawn)
17:45 eadthem looks like you wil need about 19 amps for 23 ounces of lift
17:45 Nazzy urg, the motor I have it now is rated for a hideous 60% efficiency
17:45 eadthem ya thats not to good considering i know they can go up to 90%
17:47 Nazzy the blade is 45° at the hub, near enough flat at the tip
17:47 eadthem ya i just build the ESC's  i dont know to much about the accual use for flight
17:47 eadthem ya i dont even know how to plug that information in

18:11 egrsteve I'm having fun setting up for a graduation openhouse
18:11 Cprossu yeah but it's bulletproof
18:12 LeadHead I mean, how it's controlled
18:12 Cprossu vacuum? electromechanical? what?
18:12 LeadHead You have a lever, that says 2H, N, 4L
18:12 LeadHead but
18:12 LeadHead a button on the dashboard that says 4H
18:12 Cprossu hydraulic?
18:12 LeadHead and for 4H to work, the shift lever has to be in 2H
18:12 Cprossu is that button electrical or vacuum?
18:13 LeadHead I have no idea.
18:13 Cprossu either way that's normal
18:13 LeadHead Normal for what?
18:13 LeadHead I'

18:13 Cprossu I see them all the time
18:13 LeadHead On what?
18:14 Cprossu especially late 70's early 80's things
18:14 LeadHead Asian vehicles?
18:14 Cprossu some american too
18:14 LeadHead Hm
18:14 Cprossu some AMC jeeps had fucking weird transfer cases
18:14 LeadHead All the GMs/Fords/Dodges i've ever seen either had completely push button electronic t-cases
18:14 LeadHead or full mechanical lever
18:15 Cprossu look at some of the weirder transitional machines
18:15 Cprossu IIRC I've seen some really fucked up things on land rovers too
18:15 LeadHead Well that's a given
18:15 LeadHead I also can't believe that Toyota used to build interiors like this
18:16 LeadHead 1989 FJ62 land cruiser, and the interior build quality just aboslutely blows anything American of the same vintage
18:16 LeadHead clear out of the wate
18:16 LeadHead r
18:16 LeadHead Now Toyota interiors are terrible.
18:16 * Python has 62 unread messages, made entirely in the last 5 minutes

18:20 LeadHead Also, hated that instrument cluster

18:21 LeadHead I guess to simulate a digital dash?
18:22 Rahlon left #thegeekgroup
18:24 LeadHead Have you ever noticed this weird "bug" with 90s-early 2000s GM instrument clusters? If you rev the engine to about 5,000 RPM in park, the speedometer will start twitching and jumping up
18:24 Cprossu can't say I have ever noticed
18:24 LeadHead Yeah, it's weird as hell.
18:25 Cprossu revving a gm to 5k is a bad idea anyway xD
18:25 Cprossu j/k
18:25 LeadHead Then again, GM is the only manufacturer that I know of that manages to make dashboards that somehow loose their calibration
18:25 LeadHead and the gauges go apeshit
18:25 Cprossu not true
18:25 Cprossu nissan does a damn good job at doing that too
18:25 LeadHead rofl
18:26 LeadHead I've seen more than one GMC  Envoy where the tach will read 7k at idle, and wrap around when you rev it out, or not move at all. I
18:26 LeadHead Or the speedo is off by like 50 MPH
18:26 Cprossu it's the only way my sentra has gone 150mph
18:27 LeadHead Only fix, atleast for the Envoy/Trailblazer dashboards
18:27 LeadHead is to take teh cluster out, and replace each malfunctioning gauge servo thing
18:28 Cprossu I did fix an envoy cluster once
18:28 Cprossu by punching the dash.
18:28 LeadHead rofl
18:28 Cprossu you know I just realized something weird
18:28 LeadHead My Landcruisers radio is doing something odd
18:28 Cprossu my sentra is a '99 xe
18:28 LeadHead Idle, it works fine
18:28 Cprossu yet it has a 150mph speedo
18:28 Cprossu WTF
18:29 LeadHead go abover 1000 RPM, radio turns off
18:29 Cprossu the ones on ebay max at 130
18:29 LeadHead Might have been a cluster put in
18:29 LeadHead by someone
18:29 Cprossu no
18:30 Cprossu it was brand spanking new
18:30 Cprossu when we bought it
18:30 Cprossu so it musta been an option
18:30 Cprossu as in 53 miles new
18:30 LeadHead hm.
18:31 Cprossu no tach btw
18:31 LeadHead oh
18:31 LeadHead I hate it when people say tachs are useless on an automatic
18:31 Cprossu same here
18:31 Cprossu fucking morons
18:31 Cprossu don't want to get good gas economy
18:31 LeadHead They're great for seeing shift points and making sure all your gears are shiftin'

18:32 LeadHead 3-3.5k sounds like the end of the world at this thing
18:32 LeadHead *on
18:33 LeadHead 44 at 1.5k is not bad for a 4cyl car
18:33 LeadHead Usually they're geared pretty low
18:33 Cprossu no I am happy with it economy wise
18:33 Cprossu 1/4 mile wise though...
18:33 LeadHead I think my friends altima turned like 4.5k @ 80
18:33 Cprossu I can't say I am happy at all
