00:02 masterofmonks Chris + PhotonicInduction != peace.
00:02 SparkyProjects He's so full of himself, would we get a word in edgeways if he were here ?

00:14 maglinvinn_work when did that dude jab chris?
00:15 masterofmonks For +v tonight " Deficiency in what causes scurvy and rabbit starvation?" This is a two part question.
00:15 eadthem somewhere in his last 5 posts
00:15 eadthem vitamin c
00:15 Bat-Mobile rabbit starvation?
00:15 Bat-Mobile huh
00:16 eadthem scurvy is caused by a lack of vitimin c
00:16 eadthem rabbid starvation is not nessicarly related
00:16 eadthem its more of not getting enuff fat
00:16 eadthem namely from eating only the extreamly lean meat of rabits
00:16 masterofmonks No, they are not related at all.

00:17 Toastdude Hi speed
00:17 masterofmonks But both are issues caused by deficiency.

00:18 eadthem and humans are one of the few anamals that can get scurvie
00:18 eadthem most other anamals can produce vitimin c
00:19 maglinvinn_work hmm. i can't find the video
00:19 maglinvinn_work le sigh
00:19 speed_linux back
00:20 masterofmonks Yep, and you can avoid rabbit starvation by eating the entire rabbit.
00:20 speed_linux weres wannabe?
00:20 speed_linux hi Bat-Mobile
00:20 masterofmonks Which isn't to say that most americans are at much risk of rabbit starvation for at least a couple of months.
00:21 Bat-Mobile hi speed
00:21 speed_linux how are you Bat-Mobile
00:22 Toastdude maglinvinn_work: What video?
00:22 Bat-Mobile I'm good
00:22 Bat-Mobile you?
00:22 speed_linux im good.
00:22 maglinvinn_work the one where photonic jabs chris
00:22 maglinvinn_work i'm ucrious.

00:23 Toastdude Oh, that
00:23 speed_linux Bat-Mobile, i fixed my pc at school and i haVE A QUESTION
00:23 speed_linux IFoops caps
00:23 Bat-Mobile congrats
00:23 Bat-Mobile I have aN ANSWER
00:23 Bat-Mobile (:
00:23 Bat-Mobile what's up?
00:23 speed_linux if i reinstalled windows again, does that use a product key?
00:24 Bat-Mobile yes, you have to type in the product key each time you install windows
00:24 masterofmonks As long as the product key is on no other machine you are safe.
00:25 speed_linux but if i get 3 installs with the pc if i reinsatall it on the same pc 3 times does it use all them up?
00:25 masterofmonks No.
00:25 speed_linux ok sweet :D
00:26 speed_linux a read in my a+ book about upgradding the mb that i would use one, so i must save something from the mb durring activation?
00:26 speed_linux it*
00:26 masterofmonks No, just call microsoft up.
00:27 Bat-Mobile yeah, that's what I usually do
00:27 masterofmonks It's an automated system.
00:28 speed_linux ugh >_> i dont have my cisc or annything with me now, so idk if calling would do me anny good i i have to give them anny info
00:28 Bat-Mobile "I don't have this software installed on any other machines." "OEM or retail?" "Neither, MSDN Academic Alliance" "Oh, ok, type this in: AAAAA-BBBBB- etc"
00:28 speed_linux should i try annyway?
00:28 Bat-Mobile what's the worst they can say?
00:28 speed_linux idk >_>
00:28 speed_linux i dont even really know who to call (phone #)
00:29 masterofmonks It will tell you if it fails activation.
00:29 speed_linux kk
00:31 eadthem it saves hdd serial numbers nic mac addresses cpu types and modals chipset north and southbridge info
00:31 eadthem bios version
00:31 eadthem ...
00:31 speed_linux o_o
00:31 eadthem if greater than 50% or so of it changes then it starts to wonder
00:32 speed_linux oh my
00:32 speed_linux i herd you get conflicts with these things if you ghost a machine
00:33 speed_linux but hats a nother thing entirely >__>
00:33 eadthem in general if you keep the same class of cpu but have a new mobo and cpu (and driver conflict dosent kill you) but keep the same nic, hdd and ither soundcard or gfx card it probably wont ask
00:33 eadthem ya if you ghost thers no issue for xp because your cpu and mobo modal and such stay the same
00:33 eadthem even tho nic and hdd serial change
00:34 speed_linux oh
00:34 eadthem or that could be because ive only ever ghosted xp boxes that probably had a site liciense

01:19 Toastdude Katemonster: What does the purple thing on the attitude indicator mean?
01:19 Bat-Mobile GDI forever
01:19 Katemonster it points directly toward (and away from) the launch pad.
01:19 Katemonster LOL haven't we had this argument before steve
01:20 Katemonster i *always* play red.
01:20 Bat-Mobile nope
01:20 Bat-Mobile we haven't
01:20 Bat-Mobile ohhh
01:20 Bat-Mobile wait
01:20 Bat-Mobile that
01:20 Bat-Mobile yes
01:20 Bat-Mobile we have
01:20 Katemonster but i might do a GDI skin set too
01:20 Katemonster lol
01:20 Katemonster also i want a flame tank.
01:20 Toastdude Okay, and the yellow is the direction of travel?
01:20 Katemonster yep
01:23 Toastdude Ok.
01:23 Katemonster in that last screenshot the purple mark is pointing away from the launch pad (hopefully obvious since it's pointing into the sky)
01:24 Toastdude I'm not sure exactly how to read it...
01:27 Katemonster it's basically a combination of the artificial horizon and gyro directional indicator on an airplane (which is absolute bullshit, by the way; the 8-ball you get on a real spacecraft is an *absolute* inertial reference plane, *not* relative to the earth's horizon)
01:29 speed_linux oh my PCIe is FAST!
01:29 Toastdude Oh, I meant the purple indicator... I can read the artificial horizon
01:30 tonsofpcs Katemonster: huh?
01:30 tonsofpcs what do you mean by an absolute inertial reference plane?
01:31 tonsofpcs (also, what interface is that?)
01:31 speed_linux A PCIe connection uses one wire for sending and one for receiving. Each of these pairs of wires between a PCIe controller and a device is called a lane. Each direction of a lane runs at 2.5 Gbps, or 5 Gbps with PCIe 2.0. Better yet, each point-to-point connection can use 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, or 32 lanes to achieve a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 320 Gbps.
01:34 Katemonster the gyrohorizon in an airplane is tied to a pendulum that drags it slowly into alignment with the earth; if you start at the equator and fly down to the south pole, the horizon will still be relative to earth and show that you're flying straight and level (assuming you are flying straight and level and it hasn't malf'ed). that doesn't exactly work in zero gravity, so on orbital vehicles you...
01:34 Katemonster ...just have a straight-up gyroscope that's calibrated to the stars; if you're in a polar orbit and it points toward the horizon when you're at the north pole, then when you get to the equator it will tell you you're traveling 90 degrees straight down.
01:34 Toastdude tonsofpcs: I think she means the orbital plane of the Earth around the sun
01:34 Toastdude Oh, nvm
01:34 Bat-Mobile speed_linux: which has more bandwidth, a PCIe connection or a station wagon full of micro SD cards?
01:35 Katemonster it's referred to as the "flight director attitude indicator" http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/MLSM-LM-8FDAI.jpg
01:35 tonsofpcs Katemonster: ah
01:35 tonsofpcs cool.
01:35 Katemonster which of course no longer exists on anything with a glass cockpit...
01:35 tonsofpcs Bat-Mobile: depends on if it's someone from NJ or someone from Florida driving, obviously ;)
01:35 Toastdude Is that picture from an Apollo CM?
01:35 Katemonster ...which means they probably still have one on the soyuz! :D
01:36 Katemonster i'm not sure
01:36 Toastdude Ok
01:36 Bat-Mobile :D
01:36 tonsofpcs Katemonster: why wouldn't you have one in a glass cockpit'd vehicle?
01:36 Toastdude It kinda looks like it, but i dont know
01:36 Katemonster well, you do, but it's displayed on a computer screen rather than with a physical ball mechanically tied to a gyroscope
01:37 Katemonster http://history.nasa.gov/ap16fj/pics/fdai_open1c_600.jpg
01:37 Katemonster it's kind of a complicated piece of hardware by itself
01:37 Toastdude You should still have ordinary instruments as back-ups like in a glass cockpit Cessna
01:37 Katemonster yeah but on the shuttle i'm not so sure about that
01:37 tonsofpcs yea. If I'm strapped to a rocket, I want to have about 12 layers of backup
01:37 Katemonster of course it no longer matters... >.>
01:38 Katemonster on the other hand i think they look at it as "if you have a total instrument failure in orbit, you're pretty much fucked anyway"
01:38 tonsofpcs heck, I work in TV and we have layers of backup. Most of what I do has no direct effect on anyone's ability to stay alive.
01:38 * Katemonster goes to look and see
01:38 tonsofpcs well, if you're in orbit, you have time to use duct tape to adapt a square peg to a round hole.
01:39 Toastdude True
01:39 Toastdude At least they did...

01:39 Katemonster there
01:39 tonsofpcs that said, the shuttle lands like an airplane, I'd expect an artificial horizon.
01:40 CaptainNiobe g'day,Toastdude, how are you?
01:40 Bat-Mobile ): is that the highest resolution photo available?
01:40 Bat-Mobile boo
01:40 Katemonster probably not...
01:40 speed_linux Bat-Mobile, pcie
01:40 tonsofpcs Bat-Mobile: probably not. They show that on NASATV HD all the time w/ more res.
01:40 Toastdude Good, how about you Niobe?
01:40 CaptainNiobe hey steve (i assume that's you, steve :) )
01:40 Bat-Mobile and tonsofpcs, I expect that when the shuttle lands, there's an option to put on a "standard" AH on the screen
01:41 CaptainNiobe Toast, I'm strugging trying to get rid of ubuntu on a p3 to format to windows lol
01:41 * speed_linux thought he saw cappinboden
01:41 tonsofpcs Bat-Mobile: I expcet that when the shuttle lands, there's so many people yelling corrections at you from the ground, the instruments in front of you don't matter that much
01:41 CaptainNiobe I'M NOT CHRIS! LMFAO!!! :D
01:41 Katemonster niobe is a fat chick in australia. HER WORDS NOT MINE.
01:42 * speed_linux pokes Bat-Mobile
01:42 CaptainNiobe exactly, Katemonster :D
01:42 speed_linux o_o
01:42 Toastdude Cool, they still use the same type of gauge that was used as O2 pressure on Apollo
01:42 * speed_linux doubble pokes Bat-Mobile
01:43 Katemonster tons, from what i understand the aerodynamic handling is so terrible (supersonic brick) that it really can't be landed without computer-aided FBW, so if the computers fail to where you have no AH on display, they also fail to where you have no flight control, and that's why the carry parachutes onboard.
01:43 Bat-Mobile hi speed
01:43 Toastdude Is Niobe a girl?
01:43 CaptainNiobe last time i checked lol
01:43 Toastdude Lol
01:43 Katemonster you should check again.
01:43 Katemonster it's good for your health.
01:43 Toastdude I didn't know that :)

01:44 speed_linux o_o
01:44 * Katemonster just stops before she gets too vulgar. there are minors in the room afterall.
01:44 Toastdude Lol
01:44 CaptainNiobe it's ok, i wouldn't go beyond that anyways... :)
01:45 speed_linux phew

01:48 Katemonster fun fact: see the rod dot they put at either pole?
01:48 Toastdude Yes
01:49 Bat-Mobile my first thought when you said "see the red dot" was "ooh, reflex sights!"
01:49 Katemonster LMAO
01:49 Katemonster nice
01:49 Obtuse_ hello
01:50 Obtuse_ how is everyone doing?
01:50 Bat-Mobile hi Obtuse_!
01:50 Toastdude Hi Obtuse_ !
01:50 Obtuse_ hello Batsteve
01:50 Obtuse_ I went to a bar called "The Hideout" tonight
01:50 Katemonster if the crosshairs enter the red zone, the whole thing suffers gimbal-lock and freezes; you have to readjust attitude then re-align the instrument to the stars using a sextant.
01:51 Obtuse_ its right next to Fox 17
01:51 Obtuse_ Even the sign for the Hideout is hidden behind trees
01:51 Katemonster NASA considered this a more cost-effective solution than just building it to be resistant to gimbal lock. the actual pilots were not very happy about that.
01:52 Katemonster also, hi obtuseisabot
01:52 Obtuse_ hello monster
01:52 Bat-Mobile the shuttle has pitch and roll trim
01:52 Bat-Mobile ooh, and yaw trim too
01:53 Katemonster lol
01:53 Katemonster i would hope it does
01:54 Katemonster (batsteve is taking inventory of what every single instrument and control in the space shuttle does)
01:54 Obtuse_ sound like very important things to control
01:54 Katemonster (since, you know, they are for sale now)
01:54 Obtuse_ I will soon be working with equipment that displays altitutde, attitude
01:55 Katemonster hey TGG should ask NASA to donate a shuttle. i mean they aren't using them anymore...
01:55 Obtuse_ http://www.as.l-3com.com/ <--- my new job starting next monday
01:55 Katemonster nice
01:55 CaptainNiobe kate, where would tgg park it? lol
01:56 Katemonster on the roof. then mount the weather cam on the tail.
01:56 CaptainNiobe LOL!!! i like that idea... :D
01:56 Obtuse_ and then the roof collapses
01:56 Katemonster chris could make it work. he's magic
01:56 Obtuse_ haha.
01:56 CaptainNiobe the area the shuttle would be might be able to be re-inforced, especially if it's on a corner...
01:57 Katemonster unfortunately i think the shuttle is actually slightly larger than the building itself.
01:57 Katemonster or close to it
01:57 Katemonster and i'm sure if they did donate a shuttle they would strip the SSMEs off of it first, and that's no fun.
01:58 CaptainNiobe ssmes?
01:58 Katemonster although it does make it substantially lighter.
01:58 Katemonster the main engines
01:58 CaptainNiobe ahh, yes... them and the wiring for most of it
01:58 Katemonster (literally stands for Space Shuttle Main Engine. that's literally it's official designation by Rocketdyne)
01:59 CaptainNiobe ahh, thankies... :)
02:00 Katemonster i mean, like, the main first-stage engines on the Saturn V were Rocketdyne F-1s
02:00 Katemonster but the SSME is just the SSME, no model number.
02:00 Katemonster descriptive name is descriptive, i guess.
02:01 CaptainNiobe mind you, i'm not getting this p3 formatted... anyone know how to format an ubuntu pc when it seems to refuse to boot from the cd rom first? (yes, i changed the boot sequence, still loads into ubuntu without the rom being read until about loaded)
02:01 Katemonster ....... >.>
02:02 Katemonster no idea.
02:02 * Katemonster doesn't actually know anything
02:03 Obtuse_ you're all talk?
02:03 Obtuse_ all bark, no bite
02:03 CaptainNiobe lol... you know some about shuttles... that's knowing something lol
02:04 Katemonster what's a shuttle?
02:04 Katemonster :D
02:04 Obtuse_ :P
02:04 Katemonster LOL i was right. her'es the soyuz instrument panel

02:05 tonsofpcs Katemonster: what if the display just cracks?
02:05 Katemonster FDAI top-right, and check out the volt meter above it; that looks like it was made in the 40s. that's beautiful.
02:05 tonsofpcs I mean, we know NASA designs things not to crack, but we know they do anyway...
02:06 tonsofpcs Katemonster: it probably was made in the 40s...
02:06 Katemonster well, i think that's also why there's 8 displays; pretty sure you can pull up any data you need on any display, hence the term multifunction display.
02:06 tonsofpcs also, loving the mini globe
02:06 * CaptainNiobe thinks challenger disaster
02:07 Katemonster well.... yeah.... i'm sure that caused their displays to crack... among other things >.>
02:07 * Katemonster knows that's not what you meant
02:07 [Python] left #thegeekgroup
02:07 tonsofpcs heck, those selector buttons in the middle look like they were made in the 40s... (ok, maybe 60s or 70s)
02:07 SparkyProjects The shuttle uses 5 computers for launch, or 3 for orbit, the computers are on a 'committee' system, a faulty computer can be voted out of the committe automatically by the others.
02:08 CaptainNiobe lol... i think that cause eerything on the shuttle to crack... lol...
02:08 Katemonster LOL. i'm looking for the cassette slot

03:55 Toastdude Yep
03:55 CaptainNiobe i got the ubuntu p3 formatting... mazing something so simple and jumper settings caused hours of headache... lol...
03:56 * Toastdude has no idea what that means
03:57 CaptainNiobe jumper pins are the old method of choosing which devices are read when, more or less... there was a master primary, a master secondary, a slave primary, and a slave secondary
03:57 CaptainNiobe there's also cable select, which makes everything just work (as i just discovered)
03:58 Toastdude Okay... I've only reset a BIOS jumper...
03:58 CaptainNiobe the hard drive was on cable select, the cd rom was on slave primary... i changed the cd rom to cable select, and voila! problem solved!
03:59 CaptainNiobe nowadays jumper settings are pretty obsolete, sata doesn't use them apparently
03:59 CaptainNiobe ide does
03:59 Toastdude Okay
03:59 Toastdude Glad you got it fixed
04:00 CaptainNiobe me too :D but now i have hours of xp updates ahead of me lol

04:00 Toastdude That sucks
04:01 speed_linux i read about that in my a+ book
04:01 CaptainNiobe yeah... it does... but oh well... lol... it's not being used as a standard pc, it's going to be used as a gameserver...
04:01 speed_linux also add on card would use them for irqs and dma and io adressing
04:01 speed_linux but thats so far obsolete
04:02 CaptainNiobe that would probably be in the era of windows 3x?
04:02 speed_linux idk

04:03 CaptainNiobe jumper pins?
04:03 speed_linux ugh they used diffeerent things to do that

04:04 speed_linux like in a thermostat
04:04 CaptainNiobe being in australia, we have no nmeed for thermostats, it doesn't get that cold
04:05 tonsofpcs some of which just have a serial port stuck on the bus so they can only select the IRQs (and the like) for 'COM1-4'
04:05 speed_linux huh
04:05 tonsofpcs CaptainNiobe: do you not have air conditioning?
04:05 CaptainNiobe nope
04:05 tonsofpcs also, what kind of thermostat are you using that has DIP switches?
04:05 speed_linux i just heard of it, my friend was in hvac
04:06 tonsofpcs all of the thermostats I've used either are fancy and have softbuttons or are not fancy and have a little tube part-filled with mercury...
04:06 speed_linux and when i did microprocessors, we had to adjust the dip switches on the board so we could use the hex pad
04:07 * CaptainNiobe jumps for joy entering setup
04:07 tonsofpcs DIP switches are just a series of micro switches attached to a DIP (dual-inline package)

13:17 yNos or (!GASP!) is it a MS platform and you are fighting with something or another...
13:17 CaptainNiobe p3, 512mb ram, 1.2ghz cpu, 80gb hard drive... :P
13:18 yNos what more do you need?
13:18 CaptainNiobe well, i've never handled a real server before, so i'm setting it up on xp professional... it's only a small game, doesn't take much to run, so once it's all done, i'll go ok i think
13:18 CaptainNiobe in any case, the p3 isn't the problem atm, that's done, it's setting up the game and everything it needs for the database and such
13:19 yNos ahh
13:19 yNos what game?
13:20 CaptainNiobe unlikely you or anyone else here has heard of it... endless online or endless edge... it's a 2.5d mmorpg, the engine of which has been released publically (called vodka)...

13:31 Seroster When she put a rubber tube around my arm and started tapping I was like "...Get the spoon and lighter soon?"
13:31 Seroster And yNos, I am rather slim. There is only one bodily attribute I share with Ron. And it aint the moustache.

13:35 Seroster xD
13:35 CaptainNiobe see? not such a bad thing
13:35 Seroster CaptainNiobe, I don't miss it. If I ever DO get a lot of facial hair I'll nuke the fuck out of it with a lazer.

13:40 yNos YAY! one of our 128 socket machines just loas a core :(
13:40 CaptainNiobe huh?
13:40 yNos so we are now down 4 cores..
13:40 yNos until HP gets here to swap it out.
13:41 tlockley 128 sockets?
13:41 yNos i dont understand why everything but the cells are n+1..
13:41 yNos yeah.. 128 sockets
13:41 yNos it runs HP/UX and vPars
13:42 tlockley as in CPU sockes
13:42 yNos so the thing is partitioned down to the socket.
13:42 yNos yeah
13:42 tlockley dang. I assume it is some Super-HA HP server(s)
13:43 yNos yup
13:43 tlockley cool. How is working with HP/UX?
13:44 yNos it is 4Xsuperdome2 loaded to the gills with backplane binders.
13:44 yNos It works pretty well
13:44 yNos we will likely be migrating off of them within the next 4 years though...
13:45 yNos since oracle will no longer support itanium..
13:45 yNos b1tches
13:45 tlockley lame
13:45 tlockley I remember when itanium was supposed to change the world and cure cancer
13:45 yNos and give free HJs in its offtime.
13:45 yNos flop
13:46 yNos Not sure what way we are going to go.
13:46 yNos either IBM or with a different database..
13:46 tlockley *sarcasm* NOSQL!
13:47 yNos i am gunning for DB2 on hp/ux
13:47 yNos or on AIX
13:47 yNos fck oracle.
13:47 yNos they took solaris off the table for us.
13:47 tlockley I honestly have never used DB2. Is it SQL or K/V or what?
13:47 Seroster Hey yNos, What do you think about Ron J as an actor, not as a... Stud?
13:48 yNos i like solaris better, as an admin.. but oracle owns it and their business fills me with rage.
13:48 yNos i think it is SQL
13:48 Seroster He did a great role as... Himself... In the movie One Eyed Monster, wich in essence is a team of adult movie makers in the mountains, Ron's dick gets posessed by an alien and starts killing people. Best movie I've ever seen.
13:48 yNos but i dont do much with the DB side.. am just a unix weenie right now.
13:49 tlockley i get ya

14:13 tlockley wow. yah and sdi cams are super expensive
14:13 Av_Nekoroms sdi is good but my cam cannot do it :)
14:13 MadManMarkAu I should investigate the SDI standard and see if I can build a converter
14:13 Av_Nekoroms its only an 1800 dollar sony
14:13 tggmc QSI model 908 image inserter
14:14 tlockley I can dig around. I know some people with lots of tv and vid experience
14:15 MadManMarkAu Wow, SDI is a pretty easy standard...
14:16 MadManMarkAu It's litterally YCrCb digitized and interleaved.
14:16 tlockley GOOD GOD!

14:29 MadManMarkAu XP > 7 for thig kind of stuff
14:29 tlockley yah
14:29 tlockley ASIO can be such crap
14:29 SparkyProjects I sent a few windows OS cd's, win 98 i think was one of them
14:29 CaptainNiobe omg, like, finally, the server is up and running and accessible... i just forgot a few files, which will take like 2 minutes to put in, that's it... i'm happy and relieved it's all over... and entire day working on one system isn't the most fun... :D
14:30 MadManMarkAu tggmc: How long does the Focault's pendulum swing for before it needs a boost?
14:30 tggmc good deal
14:31 MadManMarkAu I've noticed pendulums do that... I have no idea why
14:31 tlockley all the SDI switchers are non HD-SDI or 3G-SDI right
14:31 tlockley yep
14:31 SparkyProjects I think i worked out it runs for about 3 hours
14:31 SparkyProjects and i mentioned on a captain's blog that other pendulums have a drive to keep it going
14:31 SparkyProjects On one you can hear the 'tick'
14:32 tlockley well I am gonna bug some people to see if they can cut me a deal on sdi converters

14:40 tggmc producerbill hello!

14:40 tggmc we were just commenting on your weathercam remote setup

14:40 producerbill good or bad comments?
14:41 tlockley just another reason why cat5 is THE universal cable
14:41 tlockley ok
14:41 producerbill tggmc I need access through the router for final building
14:42 tlockley ooh wow
14:42 producerbill tggmc, there is a ton if stuff happening in the back ground

14:44 tlockley or in general
14:46 yNos Trevor, are ou going to make the pilgrimage to mecca?
14:46 yNos or anyone else for that matter...
14:46 tlockley I am thinking about it. It may actually be cheaper than trying to ship all that xserve stuff
14:46 tlockley $75 just to ship the HDDs
14:47 tggmc when everything gets going we'll have over 20 cameras hopefully going
14:47 tlockley it will cost me $100 off season to get a 1month openended boat ticket to take my car
14:47 tggmc currently we have ~8-9
14:47 yNos producerbill: we can setup the openbsd machine so you have access.. it has gcc installed so you can make a web api if'n you want...
14:47 yNos it will give you some isolation..
14:48 tlockley I am looking at some of the converters from blackmagic design and they arent nearly as expensive as the aja equiment
14:48 tlockley though it is till around $500 per camera
14:48 tggmc yeah which is... a tiny bit out of our budget as it stands ^_^
14:49 tlockley yep
14:50 tlockley cool. thanks for the tour
14:50 tlockley nice
14:51 tlockley just cause its fuzzy doesent mean it always works

15:13 producerbill Fucking jumpers
15:14 CaptainNiobe it's actually running xp pro... and once i figured out the jumper settings, instqalling and updating was no issue, just time sonsuming... but then i had to install and configure the server exe and everything else i needed to run the server remotely
15:15 CaptainNiobe so basically, it's just a normal xp system running as a webserving machine

17:36 producerbill working,,,, and thinking of data stuff
17:36 producerbill you?
17:37 tlockley producerbill: i like the wcam controller thingy you made
17:38 producerbill thanks, I need to get the icd written so a web client can be made.
17:38 tlockley icd?
17:38 producerbill interface control document
17:38 tlockley similar to api?
17:39 producerbill I have the camera control part written, but the image part needs work.
17:39 producerbill kind of like a API
17:40 tlockley what would you normally connect to an ICD?
17:41 producerbill Icd's are not really code, it is just a set of command or data structures.
17:42 producerbill kind of like command in telnet, or SSH
17:42 tlockley i think i get it. Off to the googles
17:46 tlockley so icds describe commands that can be passed?
17:46 Seroster How do you find out what kind of a resistor a LED needs without knowing any of it's numbers?
17:47 producerbill yep
17:47 producerbill you got it
17:48 producerbill also they can describe data structures
17:48 tlockley so what the camera sends as info out
17:48 producerbill you need to know something about the led
17:50 speed_school the leds maximum current it can handle
17:50 producerbill yes, like a byte stream of data. kind of like a msp430 data stream.
17:50 speed_school you wwould have to limit with the resistor
17:51 Seroster Erm
17:51 Seroster I have a pile of scrap LEDs
17:52 Seroster Some bought second hand (unused) - most scrapped from old electronics.
17:52 Seroster I will have like 9 in paralell, as a bike light.
17:53 Seroster Fart a number of ohms at me and I'll pick the ones that give similar light levels
17:53 Seroster Or just burn. That's fine too.
17:54 tlockley what electronics store did you get the leds from?
17:54 Seroster Private person.
17:55 Seroster A few years ago I got a set of 50 diodes from a proper store, they had schematics for the resistance needed, so I suppose they were all in the same range
17:55 tlockley well from personal experience most electronics leds are 1.5, 3.3, and 5 v leds. so look up some average confurations for each of the three and work from the lowest voltage up
17:56 Seroster Either I use the diodes I have for something (and might kill them) or I just look at them. =P
17:57 Seroster The volts I was aiming for something in the 4v range, but the problem is amps (Resistors)
17:57 Seroster I might just strap them to my handlebar, connect to the generator and go for broke. Might become fireworks when I go into the 40kph range, but hey =P
17:57 tlockley well that I would do is try and test and guestimate the specs of an individual led and then do the electics math
17:58 Seroster Any good guesstimations?
17:58 SparkyProjects Basic test i use is 1k resistor on 12 volts
17:58 Seroster Right...
17:59 SparkyProjects Find several led that look the same brightness, connect in parallel, then decrease resistor value until you get it about right
17:59 Seroster Problem is that I don't know how bright they are until I hook them up to a power source, and that might be too late?
18:00 SparkyProjects A variable resistor is handy, once it's set, measure the resisstance
18:00 yNos producerbill: when you ask about a port, are you talking about a tcp port or about wanting an ethernet run out to robotics?
18:01 Seroster SparkyProjects, I was hoping for "Pft, 350 ohms will probably work for most, go apeshit!"
18:01 yNos for a run to robotics, we have someone who will make the cables for us, we just need lenghts.. so if you want to get an idea about where the cable is going to run, measuer that out and get me the lenght.
18:01 xanhs joined #thegeekgroup
18:02 yNos for apache with cgi enabled.. a few hrs of me being there to fix it.
18:02 SparkyProjects Well it depends on the voltage you are going to power them from, and what the specs of the leds are (current), but that's the way i'd do it ^
18:03 yNos we need to finish unfucking the network and get rid of that SMC modem.
18:03 Seroster Can you determine anything from the size of the LED?
18:04 SparkyProjects nope
18:04 SparkyProjects remember that you can get a high brightness led in the same size package as a normal led
18:05 SparkyProjects hi brightness need more current
18:05 Seroster I have no problems with half of my diodes exploding.
18:05 tonsofpcs so, I need to replace some rackmount full-depth UPSs in front-rail only racks (well, they're dual rail, but rail #2 is halfway in). Any suggestions for decent depth rack-mount power strips? Minimum 8 sockets, NEMA 5-15 in and out. (I also need one with a 208v single phase 2-leg input and 4+4 5-15 outs)
18:05 tonsofpcs (full depth being ~24-28 inches)
18:06 Seroster Assume 6 volts, average ohms per diode, The ones that can't handle it are weaker links and thus eliminated (DARWIN POWER!)
18:07 SparkyProjects I would assume the ones you bought would all be the same, so exploding one for the cause is not going to hurt
18:07 SparkyProjects most (older) equipment would use standard leds, so the stripdown ones can be assumed to be the same
18:07 yNos botsteve: tell producerbill go look at the chatlogs for the last 10 mins or so and letme know what you need...
18:07 BotSteve yNos: I'll pass that on when producerbill is around.
18:08 Seroster Tomorrow at 8am I will begin three years of electrical theory, practice and more theory. I am not feeling for calculating my diodes too =P

18:12 SparkyProjects tonsofpcs, not sure if you can get hold of Olson sockets http://www.olson.co.uk
18:14 tonsofpcs SparkyProjects: I'm replacing UPSs in an existing system because we're getting a full-building UPS put in, I need to do this as quickly as possible while the electricians change over service to the panels
18:14 tonsofpcs changing sockets isn't really an option (I may have to on the 208v twist-lock)
18:14 tonsofpcs I like this thing though: http://www.olson.co.uk/pm3262.htm
18:15 tonsofpcs unfortunately, some of our equipment has hardwired power connectors
18:15 tonsofpcs (and many have bricks/cubes)
18:15 [Python] joined #thegeekgroup
18:15 SparkyProjects Yeah, i was just looking at that
18:16 SparkyProjects as for connectors, you should be able to get connectors and chop the old ones off
18:16 tonsofpcs yea, I don't have time to do that.
18:16 SparkyProjects I've got the 10 way sitting under my computer desk http://www.olson.co.uk/13amp_slim.htm
18:17 tonsofpcs also, none of those appear to be full depth.
18:17 tonsofpcs are those combination europlug/UK sockets?
18:17 tonsofpcs or are those dots just screws?
18:18 SparkyProjects Last link is UK, but Olson do them for different countries
18:18 SparkyProjects 3 pins with 2 screws
18:19 tonsofpcs ah, ok
18:19 SparkyProjects I like that as you can change out a faulty socket
18:19 tonsofpcs I've got these things: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5b/Domestic_AC_Type_B_USA.jpg
18:20 tonsofpcs and a bunch of these for studio lights: http://www.revolutionpower.com/p/MARINCO+205PBL+20A125V+NEMA+L5-20+Locking+Plug/134/
18:21 SparkyProjects Personally in a rack, i would cahange all the cords to have IEC connectors, most equipment has IEC, so you just need a IEC to IEC
18:21 tonsofpcs and just a few of these: http://www.clay-king.com/images/nema_520psx1a.jpg
18:22 SparkyProjects It's what we did at work for a server and 'tape robot' that we installed a UPS on
18:22 tonsofpcs I don't have a budget for cords and I'd say at most 50% of my equipment has C14s.
18:22 tonsofpcs and I need to keep this downtime at a minimum
18:26 tonsofpcs my main issue is that most rack-mount power strips seem to be about 2" deep and I'm replacing 24" - 30" deep UPSs...
18:26 tonsofpcs depth being from the mount point to where the cords that plug into them are...

18:29 * tonsofpcs is digging through catalogs
18:30 SparkyProjects I can't say i've seen anything that deep
18:30 SparkyProjects We susually mount from the back, or have like the one i have but vertically at one side of the rack, again at the back
18:30 tonsofpcs yea, I have plugmold vertical in many of these racks (not all) but it is often full or blocked by equipment
18:31 tonsofpcs rear rails are often too deep in as they were moved up to put under-chassis support braces in as we have very little that needs a rear-mount
18:31 tonsofpcs I should really inventory what I have where for rear rails so I know how many I need, but I know that I need at least one deep one...
18:39 SparkyProjects I did a quick search, the only deep PDU's i could find were controllers, and they were expensive (over $500)
18:42 SparkyProjects If you worked it right, you could get some rails and cut short pieces just for mounting the pdu's at the rear, rather than getting full length rails for every rack
18:44 tonsofpcs http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/model.cfm?txtSeriesID=938&txtModelID=2004 are nice (and I have a few of the 'front-facing' switched versions [they just drill the holes in a different spot in the case] in my rolling rack) but not quite deep enough, I don't think
18:44 tonsofpcs yea, unfortunately time is the major concern for most of these. I suppose some of them I can have pre-installed (some of them there's no space until the UPS is gone)
18:46 SparkyProjects Those are 4.5 inches (11.4cm) deep
18:49 tonsofpcs yea. I also have a really really cheap 16" deep strip, but I wouldn't trust it in critical use (cheaply built, cheap parts, the rack wings barely stay together)

23:22 injektion Hi
23:22 wannabe1987 lol MadManMarkAu
23:22 wannabe1987 The_Necromancer
23:22 injektion Is chlorine powder bad for car paint?
23:22 wannabe1987 not MadManMarkAu, i did that by accident
23:22 * The_Necromancer reanimates the channel.
23:23 The_Necromancer injektion: That is I assume a retorical question?
23:24 injektion The_Necromancer, I drove the Alfa to work and the dust collectors got chlorine dust all over it
23:24 injektion If that thing needs paint any time soon it's going to be expensive for my ex
23:25 injektion They were against me using a car cover

23:30 * speedrunnerG55 pokes wannabe1987
23:31 wannabe1987 hi
23:31 * The_Necromancer whacks speedrunnerG55 in the back of the head, and turns him into a zombie.
23:32 injektion That Alfa is painted in RED
23:32 speedrunnerG55 Omg
23:32 injektion A very expensive red
23:32 * speedrunnerG55 bites wannabe1987
23:32 The_Necromancer injektion: You haven't got a clue what happened to it.
23:32 wannabe1987 ...
23:33 wannabe1987 injektion is it wrong to have a red alfa?
23:33 injektion No
23:33 wannabe1987 my friends 74 alfa is maroon
23:33 wannabe1987 o ok. you made it sound bad
23:33 injektion The Milano is red and not just any red: Ferrari red
23:34 injektion Ferrari uses some expensive red pigment
23:34 injektion The_Necromancer, I just don't want the paint to get screwed I washed it off as soon as I got home
23:35 livefiretj joined #thegeekgroup
23:41 * speedrunnerG55 dies of a feaver
23:41 injektion I wonder why the dust collectors cannot remove chlorine powder from the air
23:41 speedrunnerG55 Fever
23:42 injektion Do cyclone dust collectors have an outlet tube at the top?
23:43 masterofmonks injektion: because they aren't using them right.
23:43 masterofmonks No, at the bottom.
23:43 injektion They have a tube that extends about 10ft into the air, big box at the center, and a bucket at the bottom
23:46 injektion Do you want me to grab you a pic of one?
23:48 masterofmonks I have a pretty good idea of what they look like.
23:48 masterofmonks Here is the question where is the outlet?
23:49 injektion You mean the exhaust?
23:50 masterofmonks Correct.
23:50 injektion At the top
23:50 injektion It looks like a paint booth chimney
23:50 masterofmonks Wait, then where is the intake?
23:50 injektion At the side
23:51 masterofmonks Ah.
23:51 masterofmonks They don't have filters on the outlet like they should.
23:52 masterofmonks Which is freaking BS because it's the crap that is not caught by the cyclone that can do you the most damage.
23:52 injektion So it is a cyclone?
23:53 masterofmonks http://www.google.com/imgres?q=cyclone+dust+collector&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=683&tbm=isch&tbnid=7RJ_aYC1f4xsQM:&imgrefurl=http://www.proventilation.com/applications/application.asp%253FtypeId%253D1&docid=Sn7tdpF5y1L8IM&w=457&h=973&ei=V1RMTo7VOcSpsQLkuayjCA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=416&vpy=213&dur=2084&hovh=328&hovw=154&tx=101&ty=160&page=2&tbnh=196&tbnw=115&start=20&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:20
23:53 masterofmonks Holy ginormous URL BatSteve!
23:53 injektion It doesn't look like that though
23:54 masterofmonks Not remotely?
23:54 injektion http://www.scientificdustcollectors.com/images/spj-b1.JPG
23:54 injektion It looks like that with an exhaust duct at top
23:55 masterofmonks It's a cyclone.
23:55 masterofmonks And there are supposed to be filters on the outlet.
23:55 * injektion brings that up at tomorrow mornings safety meeting
23:56 masterofmonks Don't get fired.
23:58 injektion Do cyclone dust collectors have pneumatic air lines?
23:58 SparkyProjects Might be better if he did get fired, at least he'll be safe
23:58 SparkyProjects and you could go for an 'unfair dismissal' lawsuit
23:58 SparkyProjects Make sure you get some evidence before you get kicked out
23:58 injektion Georgia is at an at will employment state and the employer WILL and CAN get away with it
23:59 masterofmonks SparkyProjects: Having worked for a somewhat related facility in the same state as him, he would be lucky if he got unemployment.
23:59 injektion The funny thing with the dust collectors is that every 2 minutes or so you will hear what sounds like a compressed air valve opening and some banging inside the dust collector
