masterofmonks any question today |

|
Killa-X |
Just burn though them, and many projects using them ;) |
| 01:02 |
|
masterofmonks |
Tonight I think we will go with a simi-relevant question. (simi because honestly the current sutuation on the east coast of the U.S. is not a real threat.) |
| 01:03 |
|
masterofmonks |
Other than air, what is the next most important thing you need to ensure your survival in an emergency situation. |
| 01:03 |
|
lwq1996 |
lol |

Shelter. |

|
masterofmonks |
Water/fire |
| 01:04 |
|
masterofmonks |
Food. |
| 01:04 |
|
lwq1996 |
well a shelter has all that stuff :P |
| 01:04 |
|
masterofmonks |
Not true. |
| 01:05 |
|
lwq1996 |
i said dry place |
| 01:05 |
|
Killa-X |
So if i climb under a rock in the woods (a shelter) ill find water fire and food just sitting there? :D |
| 01:05 |
|
lwq1996 |
lol |
| 01:06 |
|
Killa-X |
Yay for lack of details ;) |
| 01:06 |
|
masterofmonks |
There is this thing called the rule of threes when it comes to survival. |
| 01:06 |
|
masterofmonks |
Goes like this. |
| 01:06 |
|
Killa-X |
Ill ask surviver man... |
| 01:06 |
|
masterofmonks |
You can survive three hours withotu shelter. |
| 01:06 |
|
masterofmonks |
Three days without water |
| 01:06 |
|
lwq1996 |
lol |
| 01:06 |
|
masterofmonks |
And three weeks withotu food. |
| 01:07 |
|
lwq1996 |
and 30 without food |
| 01:07 |
|
masterofmonks |
And about three minutes without air. |
| 01:08 |
|
masterofmonks |
So you have all of these people in the north east of the U.S. freaking out and clearing out gorcery stores, but they don't think about secondary shelter. |
| 01:08 |
|
lwq1996 |
lol |
| 01:12 |
|
masterofmonks |
So now that we have a little thought primer for the question. "Enumerate three ways that water can be made safe to drink after a disaster." |
| 01:12 |
|
lwq1996 |
carcoal, sand, and some type of permiable membrain |
| 01:13 |
|
masterofmonks |
Those are all one way. |
| 01:13 |
|
masterofmonks |
As a matter of fact, they are often used together. |
| 01:14 |
|
lwq1996 |
ok |
| 01:14 |
|
lwq1996 |
thats one way |
| 01:14 |
|
lwq1996 |
another is water tablets |
| 01:15 |
|
masterofmonks |
So far you have filtering and chemical treatment. |
| 01:15 |
|

| 04:44 |
|
lwq_laptop1 |
for that note i sall point out wannabe doesnt own a tv |
| 04:44 |
|
Katemonster |
honestly the only reason i remember the name of the book is because it's the access code for the first numeric keypad you find in Deus Ex. |
| 04:45 |
|
Katemonster |
it's kind of sad how many of the keycodes and passwords i have memorized from playing that. |
| 04:46 |
|
wannabe1987 |
wannabe acquires tv showes and watches them either on the computer or someones tv/ps3 |

|
angy |
or a tv/ps3 |
| 04:48 |
|
lwq_laptop1 |
lol yeah |
| 04:48 |
|
Killa-X |
My memory is bad with phone numbers, I dont have any passwords writen down anywhere, i remember locker combinations, and peoples names |
| 04:48 |
|
Killa-X |
I probably could remember phone numbers if i wasnt so lazy to just put them on my phone and click the persons name, and hit "call" |
| 04:49 |
|
lwq_laptop1 |
i just got my locker combo in the mail...and looked at it once and threw it away...and i still remember my locker combo for last year and the year before |
| 04:49 |
|
Killa-X |
if its something important ill remember it for life. else ill forget it |
| 04:50 |
|
lwq_laptop1 |
lol....i remember useless shit...but forget important stuff like times and dates |
| 04:50 |
|
Killa-X |

|
Killa-X |
Pros is creativity, being able to visually see a project in mind and how to make it. The cons is when it comes to a life situation, it fking kills me on the inside.. |

Wich means "If it burns, its YOUR fault!" |
| 15:11 |

Yeah, the rule here is that you can change 'like for like' if you are 'competent' |

But if the shop sells you something that doesn't have instructions and something went wronng, you could sue, as the instructions also say something about being competent |

electronics guys: What would you recommend for micros? I got one that needs a UART and some dig out, another with some digital in and multidevice I2C. |
| 16:44 |
|
astro73|derrial |
also, I have a thing against PICs |
| 16:45 |
|
Seroster |
What are you trying to do? |
| 16:46 |
|
astro73|derrial |
it's for that HVL display project. one reads data over RS-485 (iirc) from a variety of sources, and sends it along to the other, which drives a non-LCD/LED 6 digit display |
| 16:46 |
|
astro73|derrial |
i'm using a one-way optical link |
| 16:46 |
|
astro73|derrial |
and I figure I'll use a pile of I2C-based GPIO chips for controlling the digits |
| 16:49 |
|
astro73|derrial |
i'm currently thinking about MSP430, just because of how cheap it is, and that I don't need particularly powerful micros |
| 16:52 |
|
eadthem |
id recommend atmel |
| 16:53 |
|
eadthem |
because the programmers 34$ and the chips are 1-10$ depending on what features you need |
| 16:53 |
|
eadthem |
mega164 dose a little of everythign there about 4$ each |
| 16:53 |

| 16:56 |
|
astro73|derrial |
eventually, everything tagged, sorted, and digitized |
| 16:56 |

astro73|derrial |
but eventualy is best measured in quarters, in this case |
| 16:56 |
|
astro73|derrial |
or maybe years |

well the php and database i could do but i bet that theres alredy several pepole that can do that |

astro73|derrial |

angy |
in the near futur |
| 17:06 |
|
eadthem |
so what is the eventual plan for bocsy i know there will be door terminals and etc |
| 17:06 |
|
astro73|derrial |
afaik, it's the mega software that will manage the lab |
| 17:08 |
|
astro73|derrial |
it's going to manage paid memberships, access control, parts inventory, and who knows what else |
| 17:09 |
|
angy |
there will be quite a few modules to bocsy to do a lot of things |
| 17:09 |
|
astro73|derrial |

Seroster |

eadthem: well, if they don't exist already, I'm sure tgg will make some |

| 17:13 |

angy |
it's quite easy to read magstripe and rfid |
| 17:13 |
|
angy |
the hard part is really connection to network and exchanging info |
| 17:14 |
|
astro73|derrial |
you mean there won't be scads of cat5 running everywhere? |
| 17:15 |
|

| 17:16 |
|
eadthem |
shuldnt be to hard to design a atmel or etc based board that dose the magstripe+ rfid reading for door terminals and works over ethernet |
| 17:16 |
|
astro73|derrial |
not at all |
| 17:17 |
|
angy |
nope, but the real communitaion part is a little more tricky |
| 17:17 |
|
astro73|derrial |
how so? |
| 17:17 |
|
eadthem |
real communcations? |
| 17:17 |
|
angy |
you need a client on the board to be able to auth |
| 17:17 |
|
astro73|derrial |
you mean you can't just have the terminal query the server based on location and RFID/mag code? |
| 17:17 |
|
angy |
you have the part "query the server" |
| 17:18 |
|
eadthem |
well thats not to hard |
| 17:18 |
|
angy |
it is the tricky part |
| 17:18 |
|
exor674 |
and it has to be a more secure protocol, I assume |
| 17:18 |
|
astro73|derrial |
how secure? |
| 17:18 |
|
exor674 |
because, I mean the *geek* group -- if the protocol was too simple, they'd have people breaking into the higher-security areas |
| 17:18 |
|
astro73|derrial |
physically seperate network with no drops outside of server room |
| 17:19 |
|
exor674 |
and getting in TROUBLE but |
| 17:19 |
|
eadthem |
naa thats not needed |
| 17:19 |
|
angy |
we're not DoD procedures :) |
| 17:19 |
|
astro73|derrial |
seems like the simplest way to reasonably secure it |
| 17:19 |
|
eadthem |
its not to hard to make a secure protocal that operates over public lan |
| 17:20 |
|
astro73|derrial |
do you really want to do cryptography on an embedded system though? |
| 17:20 |
|
eadthem |
ie self updating pre shared keys |
| 17:20 |
|
eadthem |
AES isnt to hard to do on a uC |
| 17:20 |
|
angy |
no need to crypto, we run over tls/ssl |
| 17:20 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: care to explain how tls isn't crypto? |
| 17:21 |
|
astro73|derrial |
eadthem: speed? |
| 17:21 |
|
eadthem |
there are atmel chips with a AES and DES operand |
| 17:21 |
|
eadthem |
im shure others have the same |
| 17:21 |
|
angy |
it's a long story |
| 17:21 |
|
angy |
search the logs, I think I explained it not so long ago |
| 17:22 |
|
eadthem |
if you try to make the UC work over a HTTPS however that is asking to much |
| 17:22 |
|
eadthem |
search the logs for what? |
| 17:23 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Most access control systems have a 'local' box, a central computer will upload data to these local boxes, the data is basically the auth codes, this means the network is not overloaded with auth requests. |
| 17:23 |
|
SparkyProjects |
The local boxes have maybe 4 rfid inputs, and several .monitoring' inputs for door open, door secure, etc. |
| 17:23 |
|
SparkyProjects |
The local box is basically a comuter motherboard, power supply, relays etc. and is connected via the network |
| 17:24 |
|
SparkyProjects |
oh, and a battery for backup operation |
| 17:24 |
|
eadthem |
mmm i cant imagen even a large bulding beeing overloaded with auth requests updates and commands for bulding operations |
| 17:24 |
|
angy |
I need to go read atmel/whatever spec |
| 17:24 |
|
astro73|derrial |
so a local box would be on the scale of a beagleboard, and that controls several doors |
| 17:24 |
|
eadthem |
one min i was aobut to grab the chip |
| 17:24 |
|
astro73|derrial |
SparkyProjects: that sounds more reasonable |
| 17:24 |
|
eadthem |
even if you dont use a AES capable chip you can still do aes in software its realy not to bad |
| 17:24 |
|
angy |
or go with a 68k with an embded linux |
| 17:25 |
|
eadthem |
its the attacking of aes thats horrable |
| 17:25 |
|
astro73|derrial |
and gives you the necessary computertation power to do secure updates over lan |
| 17:26 |
|
astro73|derrial |
i think my language centers are being crowded out by my geek centers |
| 17:27 |
|
SparkyProjects |
The system i used to look after had a local box that controls up to 4 entrance doors in a building, but we had several buildings with many more doors |
| 17:27 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Also, it's easier to run network cable than several multicores to each door, especially at tgg |
| 17:27 |
|
SparkyProjects |
We had to run one cable for rfid, one multicore for door sensors, and another for the lock power. |
| 17:27 |
|

astro73|derrial |
SparkyProjects: could you have enough IC/micro at the door to control it but communicate with the local over CAT5 or similar? |
| 17:28 |
|
SparkyProjects |
One local box could do rfid for the rs door, and monitor the exit doors in MDH for instance, and only one cat5 to bocsy |
| 17:28 |
|
eadthem |
youed need a XMEGA for hardware AES support but you could run the video system over a Xmega way more power than needed for a door controller |
| 17:28 |
|
angy |
I need to find if I can run netbsd |
| 17:28 |

The only thing we had a problem with was if a local box was offline for maintenance at the same time a badge was updated it may not accept the badge straight away, but the local box would then request from the server for an update, just means you may have to show a badge 2 or 3 times. |

| 17:35 |
|
eadthem |
well i was thinking could probably do POE |
| 17:35 |
|
astro73|derrial |
i think my old school had always-on electromagnets, so the locks disabled when the power went out |
| 17:35 |
|
eadthem |
but if you do POE you have to have lower power door magnetics |
| 17:36 |
|
SparkyProjects |
I just put it forward as an idea that you may not have realised it's existence |
| 17:36 |
|
SparkyProjects |
btw, the same system is used for international companies, auth can be done over the internet too, so if you work in the UK and have access to certain areas of a building, you get the same access rights if you visit the American branch |
| 17:37 |
|
astro73|derrial |
eadthem: that depends a lot on how you want edge cases to behave |
| 17:37 |
|
eadthem |
all i was thinking was a bulding server that handles the UDP and packet protocal used by all the building level devices and the building server directly connects to the mysql database |
| 17:38 |
|
angy |
I have to see if I can write a client for AVR |
| 17:38 |
|
angy |
only if it can be done in C |
| 17:38 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Normal way we did the external locks was that they need power to open, but there was an override key. |
| 17:38 |
|
SparkyProjects |
And for fire exits the crash bar operated the lock |
| 17:38 |
|
eadthem |
if you need help im a master at avr |
| 17:38 |
|
astro73|derrial |
eadthem: that was my first thought, but a local box feels like you'd have less problems with lag and computation overhead |
| 17:38 |
|
Killa-X |
mmmm..AVR :) |
| 17:38 |
|
astro73|derrial |
Killa-X: i'm told lab is open today |
| 17:38 |
|
eadthem |
and avrstudio 4 and 5 can easaly use GCC |
| 17:39 |
|
eadthem |
5 i beleve supports C++ |
| 17:39 |
|
Killa-X |
Ya well too bad i dont have a way up this sunday :P |
| 17:39 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Internals were usually power to lock, in fact we used electromagnets |
| 17:39 |
|
angy |
but I bet that will be arduino something |
| 17:39 |
|
eadthem |
but most ethernet and aes routines you will find implmented as ASM for avr |
| 17:40 |
|
eadthem |
prob a C library out there for it |
| 17:40 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Local box has more advantages, not just data lag when the network is busy, but also reducing the length of power runs (lock etc) as you can get voltage drop |
| 17:40 |
|
eadthem |
http://tuxgraphics.org/electro[…]rticle06061.shtml accualy this is C |
| 17:41 |
|
eadthem |
data lag? i dont see how you could have more than .1 seconds delay |
| 17:41 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: for the bocsy todo list: a web-based indicator to tell us if the lab is open |
| 17:42 |
|
angy |
that can be done |
| 17:42 |
|
eadthem |
software aes on atmel is about 63,000 bytes a second worst case 103,000 bytes a second best case looking at this one ASM routine |
| 17:43 |
|
SparkyProjects |
With bocsy seeming to be able to do just about everything tgg does (tools inventory, security cams (maybe), the server would have a 'wait in line' delay once it is fully operational. |
| 17:43 |
|
eadthem |
plus would it not be more secure to keep the valid auth codes and etc off the local controllers? |
| 17:43 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: i, for one, would find that most helpful. Nothing complicated. |
| 17:43 |
|
eadthem |
still i dont see how you could have a huge wait in line |
| 17:44 |
|
astro73|derrial |
eadthem: I would think that the locals would be pretty secure, since they would have no listening ports |
| 17:44 |
|
astro73|derrial |
so you would need physical access |
| 17:44 |
|
eadthem |
well i was thinking of someone dismantaling one |
| 17:44 |
|
SparkyProjects |
We ran our system on the intranet used for all the other computer based stuff |
| 17:44 |
|
SparkyProjects |
As i said, we had several buildings, it was research labs, offices etc on a 200 acre site, and we had VOIP running on it too. |
| 17:44 |
|
eadthem |
but of corse i doubt anyones going to conduct reverse engineering on a avr chip to read the codes off it |
| 17:45 |
|
eadthem |
voip can be a jacked up system so i coudl see how that could slow things down |
| 17:45 |
|
angy |
authcode and everything won't be stored on the local side |
| 17:45 |
|
angy |
in fact, nothing will be stored on local side |
| 17:45 |
|
eadthem |
but a simple UDP server talking to uC clients i cant see that being to demanding |
| 17:46 |
|
SparkyProjects |
The intranet was often slow before we went VOIP |
| 17:46 |
|
SparkyProjects |
At times it was like dial up :P |
| 17:46 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: so you're flat out, categorically against local boxes controlling several doors? |
| 17:46 |
|
eadthem |
ya but your talking about 1kb or less per a card swipe |
| 17:46 |
|
SparkyProjects |
But at least the access control was always quick to use |
| 17:47 |
|
angy |
that may be hard to implement, hard and soft |
| 17:47 |
|
astro73|derrial |
(as SparkyProjects described) |
| 17:47 |
|
eadthem |
what about compleatly stupid boxes |
| 17:47 |
|
eadthem |
basicly just a ethernet controlled IO box |
| 17:47 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: how so? |
| 17:47 |
|
SparkyProjects |
From the card swipe, the system would need to search a database in a server, but if the database was in a local box .... |
| 17:48 |
|
angy |
multiple doors need multiple choices |
| 17:48 |
|
astro73|derrial |
Hardware might be tricky, but not much harder than rolling your own terminal-only system |
| 17:48 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: clarify? |
| 17:48 |
|
eadthem |
box receves a card scan it sends it and the reader ID to the server |
| 17:48 |
|
eadthem |
server sends the reader id and a IO pin on command |
| 17:48 |
|
angy |
you need to choose the door, then swipe/pin then the soft has to send the request with that particular door in some header |
| 17:49 |
|
eadthem |
i mean then you have a universal ethernet IO device that works for everything from HVAC to door control depending entirely on the servers config for that device |
| 17:49 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: well, in the sparky setup, each local keeps it's own access controls. But even if you don't do that, don't you still need to send that data to the server in any setup? |
| 17:50 |
|
astro73|derrial |
the basic access query consists of a verb, a subject, and an object |
| 17:50 |
|
angy |
yep, but not having to try find the door accessed |
| 17:50 |
|
angy |
it's only a single query |
| 17:51 |
|
astro73|derrial |
ummm... why would you need to "find" the door? |
| 17:51 |
|
Killa-X |
mmmm 100 pounds of spring power switch cocked and ready to be fired.. |
| 17:51 |
|
SparkyProjects |
oh yeah, i would personally have a local box close to the cnc machines, when activated it would be like pressing the start button on a switch (it would not stop the machine as part of safety, you do that manually when you finish) |
| 17:52 |
|
Killa-X |
ive been slowly workign on my own CNC..heh |
| 17:52 |
|
eadthem |
just swipe the card and it enables the start button for say 5 minuts |
| 17:52 |
|
eadthem |
maby longer |
| 17:52 |
|
angy |
that is a bad idea |
| 17:52 |
|
Killa-X |
talking about adding lockouts to the CNCs? |
| 17:52 |
|
angy |
you shouldn't think of cutting power when it's working |
| 17:52 |
|
eadthem |
not thinking of that |
| 17:52 |
|
eadthem |
you have a start button and a stop button |
| 17:53 |
|
eadthem |
you only need to push the momentary start button to start the machine |
| 17:53 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: in a multiplexed (sparky) setup, you know what terminal/door was accessed. In a dumb setup, each terminal knows it's own location. What's this "find the door" stuff? |
| 17:53 |
|
eadthem |
power runs until you hit stop |
| 17:53 |
|
angy |
find door is the location of the door in multiplexed setup |
| 17:53 |
|
wannabe1987 |
i'm being barked at brb |
| 17:53 |
|
exor674 |
wannabe1987: woof woof? |
| 17:53 |
|
Killa-X |
always wondered..what kind of power does the lab have for its main service entrance? |
| 17:54 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Most machines have a start and stop button, if the CNC's had a separate start/stop, but without a start button, you swipe the card to start, then you usee the cnc in the normal way, when you finish usng it you press the stop |
| 17:54 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: ummm... the hardware should be made so that you know what reader was scanned, and therefore which door to open |
| 17:55 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: scanning the database (ie, a big list) for a user/verb/subject triple isn't difficult |
| 17:55 |
|
angy |
that's not even close to that |
| 17:56 |
|
angy |
the database access is not that simple |
| 17:56 |
|
exor674 |
SparkyProjects: I am not sure if fucking with the machines themselves is a good idea. maybe possibly a latching mollyguard over the start button that is card-controlled |
| 17:56 |
|
astro73|derrial |
what am I missing then? |
| 17:56 |
|
SparkyProjects |
On our system we knew which reader was scanned, we could even see if the reader was scanned with a card that wasn't valid for that particular door |
| 17:56 |
|
angy |
you need 1. login, 2. accessing the function, 3. logout |
| 17:56 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: umm.... what? |
| 17:57 |
|
angy |
you don't just scan the card and send card/access/door |
| 17:57 |
|
angy |
the process is quite different |
| 17:57 |
|
SparkyProjects |
No need to mess with the machines, only the supply going to them, think of an on off switch on the wall with a lock, but the lock is electronic |
| 17:57 |
|
angy |
you scan the card that send (crypt|nip) then (access|where) |
| 17:58 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: right, the access query takes the form of "(user with card ___) would like to (open) (door ___)" |
| 17:58 |
|
angy |
nope |
| 17:58 |
|
eadthem |
angy if the to be written building server software dose the database you just have a single connection to the mysql server |
| 17:58 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: is there additional verification? |
| 17:58 |
|
eadthem |
not that much is needed |
| 17:59 |
|
exor674 |
SparkyProjects: I don't think those machines are designed to be powered on and off willy-nilly |
| 17:59 |
|
angy |
first it auth the user and create a session, then that session tries to open one particular instance of door |
| 17:59 |
|
angy |
it's 2 parts |
| 17:59 |
|
eadthem |
seams overly complex |
| 18:00 |
|
astro73|derrial |
I agree with eadthem, but I'll roll with it |
| 18:00 |
|
angy |
you can't do oversimple |
| 18:00 |
|
angy |
it's just unmaintainable |
| 18:00 |
|
angy |
using multiple parts permit to have master functions |
| 18:01 |
|
angy |
there is no (open door) function |
| 18:01 |
|
astro73|derrial |
ahhhh |
| 18:01 |
|
angy |
it's a meta function of credential verification, so it can be used to everything |
| 18:01 |
|
astro73|derrial |
we're trying to shoe-horn door access into the bocsy model |
| 18:01 |
|
angy |
if you need to verify credential, you call the session of the user and the credential to be verified |
| 18:03 |
|
angy |
and there are quite a lot of other verifications that need to be done, aside of just ``you can open that door'' |
| 18:03 |
|
astro73|derrial |
sorry, i've been thinking about door access in terms of generic permissions. All the systems I've seen can be abstracted to subject/verb/object. |
| 18:03 |
|
angy |
can you open it ``now'' for instance |
| 18:03 |
|
angy |
it can, but it's quite a little more complicated than just that |
| 18:03 |
|
astro73|derrial |
fair enough |
| 18:03 |
|
Killa-X |
mmmmm nearly time to starting firing the thermal gun |
| 18:04 |
|
astro73|derrial |
but the factors that determine the answer to yes/no don't necessarily affect the basic query form, although they do affect the complexity of the permission database |
| 18:05 |
|
angy |
for instance, if you are login in the building to do, say tiding the MDH, why would you try to access, say, my office (granted you can access it logged other way) |
| 18:05 |
|
astro73|derrial |
I would just take additional identity verification (pin, biometrics, weight on door mat, etc) into the "subject" portion |
| 18:05 |
|
eadthem |
all ya do is SELECT `user_id` FROM `user` WHERE `user_rifd` <=> %varable% AND `user_sha_challange` <=> %varable2%; if a result is returned then do SELECT `granted` FROM `user_access` WHERE `user_id` <=> %userId% AND `asset_id` <=> %asset_requested%; |
| 18:06 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: my problem with that is that I have a very hard time expressing what i'm doing to bocsy |
| 18:06 |
|
SparkyProjects |
exor674, the machines have an isolation switch on the wall, you would turn that on when you want to use it, and turn it off wen you are finished, and to ensuure untrained persons don't use the machines you can put a padlock through the switch. |
| 18:06 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Think of the padlock as being electronic, this does not affect the machines in any way |
| 18:06 |
|
eadthem |
%..% are c/c++ inserted varables |
| 18:07 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: and I would not be happy with a system that limited my access based on what I tried to say what I'm doing |
| 18:07 |
|
angy |
never ever turn off a CNC, unless you know very well what you do |
| 18:07 |
|
eadthem |
thus bocsy lets you turn on the switch after a card swipe but the user is relied upon to turn off the switch when finished |
| 18:07 |
|
angy |
so you say you would like to say doing something, then do another thing? |
| 18:07 |
|
eadthem |
and yes most of the time you leave CNC equipment running for a long time |
| 18:07 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: it's just down-right inconvenient, and if you want to know where I am, look at my door access |
| 18:07 |
|
eadthem |
ie never turning it off unless it will be unused for more than 2 days |
| 18:08 |
|
angy |
I don't turn CNC off, ever |
| 18:08 |
|
exor674 |
eadthem: isn't part of the problem is most machines have no idea where they are besides keeping track? |
| 18:08 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: as it is, the bocsy login screen is woefully insufficient for anything more than loose information |
| 18:08 |
|
SparkyProjects |
angy, if you are trained and autorised, you would be allowed to turn it on, thus you would be the one that turns it off. |
| 18:08 |
|
SparkyProjects |
Even now there is nothing to stop anyone just throwing the wall switch off |
| 18:08 |
|
eadthem |
thus why it would make more sense to have bocsy enable the momentary push start button |
| 18:09 |
|
angy |
you need to be more than trained to turn on a CNC from completely off state |
| 18:09 |
|
astro73|derrial |
and making it more complete just makes the process more of a hassle |
| 18:09 |
|
angy |
either sway, CNC won't be usable on your own, you will need someone with you |
| 18:09 |
|
eadthem |
exor674 not at all its just that with the long power ups and the thermal cycleing issues it will all last longer if its mantained at a constant warm temprature |
| 18:10 |
|
eadthem |
some CNC machines have trouble with intial positioning |
| 18:10 |
|
eadthem |
but thats a design flaw |
| 18:10 |
|
astro73|derrial |
if you trust me to be in the robotics lab in general, why would you not trust me in there if I filed a thing saying i'm working in electronics? |
| 18:10 |
|
angy |
not at all |
| 18:10 |
|
angy |
that's part of the machine itself |
| 18:10 |
|
angy |
if it's power off, it means it is *moved* |
| 18:10 |
|
angy |
so you need to re-do all the calibration |
| 18:11 |
|
astro73|derrial |
there's all kinds of edge cases that i would want to get in to a lab that i don't want to have to file paperwork for |
| 18:11 |
|
eadthem |
on the Univeral instruemnts PNP machines i mantain and program at work we leave them on purely for thermal cycleing issues |
| 18:11 |
|
wannabe1988 |
why do plugins keep dying? will they stay alive on opera? |
| 18:11 |
|
exor674 |
wannabe1988: chrome? |
| 18:11 |
|
eadthem |
we can and do at times turn them off every night but it only takes them an extra 10 min to start cold than start warm |
| 18:11 |
|
wannabe1988 |
i'm using chrome |
| 18:11 |
|
angy |
thermal cycling is nowhere around to be an issue, apart you use punch-card CNC |
| 18:11 |
|
astro73|derrial |
finding tools, finding people, cross-lab projects |
| 18:11 |
|
SparkyProjects |
OK, lets not ponder on the machines, i only mentioned it as something i would do if it was me. |
| 18:11 |
|
SparkyProjects |
But also as an example of what else the access control could do |
| 18:12 |
|
angy |
what kind of CNC do you use? |
| 18:13 |
|
eadthem |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v[…]ipYA&feature=fvst |
| 18:13 |
|
astro73|derrial |
i mean, you already have the data of about where I am and at tools/parts I have access to. I would think that's enough for security and inventory control. |
| 18:13 |
|
eadthem |
10,000 to 15,000 parts per hour per a head |
| 18:13 |
|
angy |
that's a placing machine... |
| 18:13 |
|
eadthem |
yep |
| 18:13 |
|
exor674 |
wannabe1988: if the plugins are dying under chrome, you are probably going to have Opera crash |
| 18:14 |
|
eadthem |
i said PNP |
| 18:14 |
|
angy |
I say CNC, not the same problems when turned off |
| 18:14 |
|
angy |
placement, you're right with the thermal issues |
| 18:15 |
|
eadthem |
typicaly they run like crap for the first panel or 3 from a cold start or just the first 1/2 a panel from a warm start |
| 18:15 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: am I missing something? |
| 18:16 |
|
eadthem |
i dont know much about haas but i assume you have a start button on the machine on UIC machines its a momentary start button you press it whenever you want to make it zero, start a run, start a setup function ... thus putting the cutoff on the start button would be the ideal place for a UIC PNP machine |
| 18:16 |
|
angy |
astro73|derrial: if we were to dev function by function using the sole minimum, no, but in the big picture, a lot |
| 18:17 |
|
eadthem |
witch would still leave the cycle stop and estop buttons untouched and functional all the time |
| 18:17 |
|
angy |
you have a cycle start |
| 18:17 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: sorry, i wasn't at the bocsy architecture meetings |
| 18:17 |
|
angy |
I don't think it will be possible to hack into the HAAS for enabling the start button :) |
| 18:17 |
|
eadthem |
only issue is you can do a lot of damage to a machine via the gui and etc without hitting the start button ie trashing program files and etc |
| 18:18 |
|
angy |
currently, the door access system is not really into the priorities, we have to discuss it a lot more |
| 18:18 |
|
angy |
and build a hell lot of other functions before |
| 18:18 |
|
eadthem |
dose HAAS run windows? |
| 18:19 |
|
angy |
I don't know what CNC they use, but either NUM or Siemens |
| 18:20 |
|
angy |
they run Haas control :) |
| 18:20 |
|
astro73|derrial |
angy: as a general critique of your development model, I would think you'd have more community buy-in if it was more open. I totally understand keeping actual development to a limited number of people. But you notice none of us (the guys that give the The Geek Group money and the actual users of the system) have a clue what's going on with the core software |
| 18:20 |
|
astro73|derrial |
just my $.02 |
| 18:20 |
|
angy |
neither us |
| 18:21 |
|
angy |
we are currently really on a design/try process |
| 18:21 |
|
angy |
a LOT more than actually producing something |
| 18:21 |
|
astro73|derrial |
oh, ok. as long as we're on the same page |
| 18:21 |
|
angy |
once it will be more ready, and we will have something like a stable alpha, we will interact a lot more with community |
| 18:22 |
|
astro73|derrial |
is there any documentation at all as to where you'd like to go with it? what you would like it to do if you had gobs of time and energy? |
| 18:22 |
|
eadthem |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v[…]Y&feature=related OLD PNP machine very very fast and way to many moving parts the back side thats realy realy long is the feeder bank |
| 18:22 |
|
angy |
currently, it's more having coding ideas |
| 18:22 |
|
eadthem |
this one moves the feeder bank back and forth quite fast |
| 18:23 |
|
astro73|derrial |
ok |
| 18:23 |
|
angy |
I think the only time I use a PNP I broke it |
| 18:23 |
|
eadthem |
probably running OS2 |
| 18:23 |
|
eadthem |
never used one of them |
| 18:23 |
|
astro73|derrial |
thanks for helping clear up my notion of the system. Even if I keep arguing for simpler systems :P |
| 18:24 |
|
angy |
it will be simple, when you'll see the global picture |
| 18:24 |
|
astro73|derrial |
nothing this big can truely be simple |
| 18:24 |

| 20:51 |

same |
| 20:51 |
|
Seroster |
mashpriborintorg, The point of safely desarming a crt is NOT to have glass all over the room. |
| 20:51 |

Killa-X |
ive been personally told by tpeople it hurts less than a horse fence. but depends the age |
| 20:51 |

| 20:53 |
|
Seroster |
Remove the board from the electron gun pins |
| 20:53 |
|
Killa-X |
and it makes a cool wooshing sound from the plastic :P |
| 20:53 |
|
Seroster |
In the middle is a point where you can jam in a screwdriver and beat the driver with a hammer, makes air rush in slowly |
| 20:53 |
|
Seroster |
And you get little or no shrapnel. |
| 20:54 |
|
mashpriborintorg |
and then goes to the landfgill and kills all the little animals |

Killa-x, if you break the nipple in the middle of the pins, the air rushes in (may take a minute to equalise), then you tap around the neck to break it off, you can then tap the rest of the glass so it collapses into the front part, you can also break the neck assembly using the fronf section as a catchment 'bowl' |

eadthem |
the problem with lasers is you have to bend the light |
| 21:10 |
|
eadthem |
a DMD dose not bend light for the purpose of scanning a screen just to bend a paticular pixle to or from the focal point of the optics ie much smaller angles |
| 21:10 |
|
eadthem |
the other issue with laser projectors is if you want to fill a whole screen you will need the equivlent lumens and thus wattage you had with the LED or incandecent light source |
| 21:11 |
|
eadthem |
ie a 75W laser or there abouts |
| 21:11 |
|
eadthem |
and if your light bender lets assume its rotating mirrors fails you have a 75W lightsaber aimed at what was a projection screen |
| 21:13 |
|
eadthem |
even multiple lasers drawing there own section of the screen you can never get back to the same safety you had with a DMD or LCD projector |
| 21:15 |
|
mashpriborintorg |
yeah, and newer power leds will be much more convenient for such devices anyway |
| 21:16 |
|
Killa-X |

So first you try it out, then you develop a theory about what is wrong, then you take it apart, try what you think is bad, swear, put it all together, undo it since you did it wrong, put it together again, try it, notice it didnt work, open again, cuss, remove some hoses, blow them through, reassemble, cuss, disassemble and properly reassemble, cuss more, try it out, notice a leak, diassemble, replace hose clamp, reassemble, notice |
| 21:28 |
|
Seroster |
it wasnt THAT clamp, cuss more.... |

low power hot plate boiler with a float switch and a power switch couple thermal fuses that was it |

i mean seriously tinted windows on a CNC robot |
| 21:34 |
|

And when you overcome the intertia of removing one safety function it won't take you long to remove the rest too |
| 21:34 |

atleast the AOI machine has a optical doorway |

btw, SparkyProjects, I have a question about crt electron guns |
| 21:39 |
|
SparkyProjects |
What's the question |
| 21:39 |
|
Seroster |
I disassembled a crt out at the dumpster |
| 21:40 |
|
Seroster |
Took care of the tube with the steel tipped boot method |
| 21:40 |
|
Seroster |
Picked out the electron gun and threw it in the electronics dumpster nearby |
| 21:40 |
|
Seroster |
There was a bit of water in that dumpster, and the electron gun assembly fizzed when it landed in that water. |
| 21:40 |
