00:01 yNos yeah..
00:01 yNos at least around here

00:01 Hackbat hey
00:01 Hackbat hey
00:01 Hackbat hey
00:01 yNos i am a fan.. it shows a lot more than most local news does.

00:01 Hackbat at least their flesh is
00:01 dbshortwave oink

00:02 * yNos doesnt eat pig
00:03 Ponko should i show any sigh of sympathy for my ex who's pretty much lost everything but she did cheat on me for about the entire duration of our relationship

00:03 Ponko that's what i thought :)
00:03 yNos Ponko: showing sympathy doesnt mean you give a shit
00:04 Ponko i don't though
00:04 yNos just means you can play the game
00:04 yNos then why worry about it?

00:06 yNos to my detriment
00:07 sndwrx ha whatevs

01:41 wannabe1987 BATS!
01:41 BatSteve hi kelly
01:43 sndwrx wannabe1987:  Is your computer configured to use the DNS entries that the router pushes to it?
01:43 wannabe1987 i don't know.
01:43 wannabe1987 i never had to change any settings, my sister did
01:45 sndwrx wannabe1987: Gotcha.  Well, it's easy enough to configure your own DNS server entries, if you suspect that's what is slowing you down.
01:45 wannabe1987 no, just sometimes webpages like google won't load. or facebook. until i restart the browser
01:46 * BatSteve does not understand people who come into a channel and then complain about the bots

02:17 BatSteve lwq1996: what do you mean "the list of what to do" ?
02:17 BatSteve I'm not sure which list you want
02:17 Ponko -_- yeah you being my father helped me throw a Sulphur hexafluoride inflated football that far
02:17 * wannabe1987 needs a dice bag pattern thats EASY and free. :sigh:
02:17 lwq1996 yes, i need the list of commands of what to do

02:38 Ponko oh i LOVE that guy
02:38 sndwrx wannabe1987: I know that link I gave you earlier was bigger than you need for a dice bag, but I figured you could cut the pattern dimensions in half or one-third and be pretty good to go.
02:39 wannabe1987 yeah
02:39 wannabe1987 i have it up stilll
02:39 sndwrx wannabe1987: Also, I thought he might appreciate the cute little flower on it when he pulls the dice bag out in front of all his friends.  :>

02:40 wannabe1987 i can't make the flower, so its all good :D
02:40 sndwrx haha.  Why not?
02:40 wannabe1987 i don't crochet
02:41 sndwrx Oh.  I hadn't looked closely enough to know it was crocheted.
02:41 pegasus a crocheted dice bag might be a problem
02:41 wannabe1987 lol
02:41 wannabe1987 why pegasus?
02:41 pegasus that d4 is likely to try and escape
02:41 Ponko i FREAKING LOVE the nostalgia critic Guardianzozo
02:41 pegasus possibly the d8 too
02:41 wannabe1987 lol
02:41 wannabe1987 why do you say that?
02:42 pegasus have you ever stepped on a d4?
02:42 wannabe1987 no....
02:42 pegasus pointy corners.
02:42 wannabe1987 i don't have a d4
02:42 wannabe1987 yes...
02:42 sndwrx Crocheting isn't necessarily a loose knit.
02:42 pegasus looser than anything i'd trust to secure my d4
02:42 wannabe1987 yeah....
02:42 wannabe1987 no its not...
02:42 sndwrx I used to have a couple different hackey sacks that were crocheted by two different people.
02:42 pegasus my dice bag is pleather with a TSR logo on it
02:42 astro73|mal ok. Linux Mint has a flaw: Their selection of packages suck…
02:43 sndwrx Crocheted tightly enough to hold small beads and bbs.
02:43 wannabe1987 my sisters computer decided in the last month it doesn't have a cd rom drive.....wtf
02:43 wannabe1987 yeah....
02:43 pegasus sndwrx: what were they filled with?
02:43 sndwrx Crocheted tightly enough to hold small beads and bbs.
02:43 pegasus wannabe1987: 98?
02:43 wannabe1987 no
02:44 sndwrx Actually, one of them I had was filled with beans of some sort, too.
02:44 sndwrx That was the first hackey sack I learned on.
02:44 wannabe1987 looks like win 2k ?
02:44 pegasus crocheting tight enough to hold in a bb is a good trick, but i'm betting even that has a larger diameter than the point on a d4, and the d4 is built to take a tiny hole and make it bigger over time
02:44 sndwrx wannabe1987: Right-click "My Computer", left-click "Properties" in the context menu that pops up.
02:44 pegasus they are escape artists. and good at hiding.
02:45 wannabe1987 i'm not working on it....dad is :P
02:45 pegasus wanna: uninstall the CD-ROM driver and reboot
02:45 sndwrx wannabe1987: Will you learn to crochet and make me a hackey sack?  :D
02:45 wannabe1987 dad can't find the driver and i have to get going :P

03:00 sndwrx astro73|mal: What kind of exciting software?
03:02 astro73|mal BotSteve, always has something new coming down the pipe. I'm starting a project to generate statistics i'm calling tisc (TGG IRC Statistics Creator)
03:02 astro73|mal Which is basically CouchDB Map/Reduce queries fed to Genshi templates
03:02 sndwrx oh, cool.
03:02 sndwrx What kind of statistics?
03:03 Ponko BatSteve that's pure gold my friend
03:04 astro73|mal sndwrx, basically cloning PISG for now, like http://elanor.mine.nu/daeron/script.fi.html
03:04 BotSteve Title: #script.fi @ QuakeNet stats by Daeron
03:04 sndwrx I was an admin on an IRC server that had stats like the most frequently used words, most words spoken by username, most frequent messages sent to the channel by username, etc.
03:04 sndwrx Ah, okay.  That looks VERY similar to what I just described.
03:04 sndwrx haha.
03:05 sndwrx In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the same thing.
03:05 astro73|mal well, MapReduce is a very different way of writing queries. But I figured out that using a non-relational database (like CouchDB) and queries would mean I would end up writing a lot less code
03:06 pegasus i rewrote huge chunks of PISG way back
03:06 astro73|mal since PISG has no templating, nobody has updated the markup to conform to standards, and it's all home-grown stuff
03:06 astro73|mal the way I'm writing, it's going to be highly modular and very customizable
03:06 pegasus my version of pisg is XHTML1.1
03:07 astro73|mal pegasus, good for you. I find perl to be not worth the trouble
03:07 pegasus just saying, i updated mine
03:07 BatSteve astro73|mal: yep, saw that
03:07 pegasus the perl in stock PISG is pretty abominable anyway
03:08 astro73|mal oh, so it wasn't just me? banging my head on the wall trying to make sense of it?
03:08 Guardianzozo joined #thegeekgroup
03:08 astro73|mal I thought that was just perl as a language
03:08 pegasus no, it's written pretty oddly. it has some nice tricks, but the syntax is quite bad.
03:08 pegasus well, perl kind of uniquely lends itself to those horrors
03:09 astro73|mal and i thought PHP was bad. At least it kept implicit variable setting to a minimum

03:13 sndwrx Is anyone familiar with Wordpress?
03:13 lwq1996 that website just made me more confused
03:13 BatSteve sndwrx: moose is
03:13 BatSteve sadly she's not here ever
03:13 sndwrx Well, not so much the CMS aspect.  Moreso the PHP, I guess.
03:13 astro73|mal sndwrx, i used to be. but not in a long time
03:14 BatSteve ...apologies for useless data
03:14 BatSteve lwq1996: are you on linux right now?
03:14 lwq1996 it was kinda usefull but it confused me
03:14 sndwrx When I enter anything that has an apostrophe, it displays as \'
03:15 sndwrx I've tried a couple stupid tricks that I know to see if I could escape it manually, but that didn't work.
03:15 sndwrx Anyone have suggestions?
03:16 pegasus astro: you  might find some love in the use strict; pragma
03:16 pegasus i just finally the other day got two of my friends to sit down and learn them some perl after years of evangelizing
03:17 astro73|mal sndwrx, check your PHP config for ... auto escape?
03:17 astro73|mal pegasus, PISG uses it.
03:17 pegasus strict?

03:20 sndwrx Thanks, I appreciate it.
03:21 astro73|mal sndwrx, magic_quotes_gpc
03:21 astro73|mal "This deprecated feature will certainly be removed in the future."
03:21 sndwrx It's been some weeks since I addressed the issue, and not being entirely familiar with things like that anyway...
03:21 astro73|mal excuse me, what the docs said is:
03:22 astro73|mal "This deprecated feature <strong><em>will</em></strong> certainly be <strong><em>removed</em></strong> in the future."
03:22 astro73|mal all the major software I've worked with (MediaWiki, WordPress, etc) find this incredibly annoying and strongly encourage you to disable it
03:23 pegasus CMS annoys me.
03:24 astro73|mal pegasus, it can be useful for mostly static sites. But yeah, CMS as a software problem is far overrated.
03:24 Thermoelectric joined #thegeekgroup
03:24 pegasus i'd say it's underrated as a problem, overrated as a solution
03:25 pegasus hey thermo
03:25 astro73|mal sndwrx, do you have a file with phpinfo() somewhere? That'll tell you what you need to know?
03:27 astro73|mal (I can abandon PHP, but i'll never forget it)
03:27 sndwrx astro73|mal: Yeah, I just made a phpinfo file real quick and was about to look it over but checked back here first.  :)
03:28 BatSteve astro73: much like herpes

03:28 BotSteve ".17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire, commonly known as the .17 HMR, is a rimfire rifle cartridge developed by the ammunition company Hornady in 2002." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.17_HMR
03:29 astro73|mal PHP and Perl have something in common: They're best for really small things that you don't care about proper form. But there's way better software to help write actual apps in.
03:29 sndwrx astro73|mal: Yes, magic_quotes_gpc is enabled.
03:30 sndwrx magic_quotes_runtime and _sybase are disabled.  Don't know if that makes any difference or not.
03:30 astro73|mal sndwrx, see if you can disable it in your .htaccess
03:30 astro73|mal `php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off`
03:31 sndwrx Well, it's an automatically generated .htaccess file.  (I'm working with someone else's site hosted on ipage)
03:32 sndwrx There's nothing in the .htaccess except some rewrite rules between two comments beginning and ending wordpress somethings.
03:32 astro73|mal well, stick the PHP flag in there
03:33 sndwrx Guess I'll plop it in there before the Wordpress stuff.
03:33 astro73|mal either through your interface or manually
03:33 sndwrx Ah, shit.
03:33 sndwrx haha creates a 500 error.

06:02 astro73|mal it's a non-relational database that uses MapReduce for queries.
06:02 astro73|mal I'm writing my first query for it
06:02 astro73|mal and it fails
06:03 splint Mapreduce... mapReduce.... i will head to google for a moment

06:05 astro73|mal CouchDB is a very interesting database
06:06 splint Thanks BotSteve, Seemed kind of neat, it never occured to me that there were non-relational database's before... i'm a little slow.
06:06 BotSteve No problem, splint
06:08 sndwrx splint: Trying to fix someone's Wordpress site and working on multiseat linux kiosks.
06:08 astro73|mal in this case, i plan on dumping and IRC log into CouchDB and then writing mapreduce functions to produce interesting numbers
06:09 splint sndwrx: multiseat linux kiosks?  I'm not much of a linux buff unfortunately.
06:09 * sndwrx nods.
06:10 splint Astro: What kind of interesting numbers are you trying to extract?
06:10 sndwrx Multiseat being the ability to run one computer with multiple montiors, keyboards and mice, all working on independent and individual desktops.
06:11 splint ohhhh very awesome, kind of self explanatory now that i think about it xD
06:12 astro73|mal splint, things like most popular times, who says the most and when, what gets said the most, who's loudest, who's mean
06:13 astro73|mal the data is kinda hard to model in a traditional database, and writing your own data manager is a pain
06:13 * Katemonster is too tired to keep going

06:15 splint astro: That sounds really interesting, i've never been able to do anything that utilizes recursion past a fibonacci sequence in python -__
06:15 astro73|mal splint, I've taken a SQL class, but these are entirely different kinds of queries. It's going to be interesting.
06:16 splint astro: Haha good luck! Sometimes i have an issue learning a whole new X to do Y when i know i could get it working with something i already know, something i gotta get over though.
06:17 astro73|mal well, i could have gotten it working in SQL, but that seemed painful and cludgey

06:19 astro73|mal what did you expect?
06:19 sndwrx It's pretty cool, but makes me feel even more ashamed that I couldn't code my way out of a wet paper bag.  :P
06:19 sndwrx Well idunno.
06:19 astro73|mal what can you do to get out of a wet paper bag?
06:19 sndwrx There are some electric buffs too, but it seems to me that the majority of people around here are programmers.
06:20 splint astro: I'm surprised i figured Channel->User<->Post would be enough to start counting words, Posts would obviously have timestamps etc.
06:21 splint sndwrx: haha i disagree, when i come on in the day i am drowned in nothing but osiclation this, timings that, more electrobable than i know what to do with.
06:21 sndwrx oh
06:22 astro73|mal splint, by line, you have rows for JOINS, KICKS, Messages, Actions, etc
06:23 splint sndwrx: In my opinion though if you are any sort of serious computer user you probably know atleast a little something about programming =p.
06:23 sndwrx "a little something" being the operative phrase.
06:26 Toastdude Bye all
06:26 splint Goodnight Toastdude, enjoy the thanksgiving!
06:26 Toastdude You too!
06:26 sndwrx night Toastdude
06:26 splint sndwrx: if your not a programmer or an electronic junkie then what keeps your interests?
06:27 sndwrx hard to say.
06:27 sndwrx I'm an entrepreneur, a bit of an engineer.
06:27 sndwrx And, as most here, an all-around tinkerer.
06:28 sndwrx I spent nearly 15 years in aftermarket automotive accessories, primarily focused on audio/video, alarms and remote starters.
06:29 sndwrx I've been putzing with computers for 25 years.  Hence my shame in not claiming knowledge in a single programming language.
06:30 sndwrx What about you?
06:31 splint Nice, sounds like you haven't had trouble not falling into one single thing that ends up eating your life away xD!!
06:31 * sndwrx snickers.
06:31 splint If you really want to then just pick up something that is easy to prototype with (PYTHON!!) i love python so hard.
06:32 * sndwrx nods.
06:32 sndwrx When I finish up with my current project, that's my intent.
06:32 splint me? I'm young, not even able to drink yet ;)... So i just go to school, play video games, and try to think of new things to code.  I'm going for network security but i really should have been a programmer is what i am finding out far too late, i will probably end up going back to school.
06:32 sndwrx But right now I'm deep into a complete overhaul of a local library's network.
06:33 splint Oh really? Just bringing it out of the 19th century?
06:33 astro73|mal splint, not old enough to drink. Shouldn't you still be in school?
06:34 splint i am! graduating soon, getting the wrong degree though
06:35 sndwrx Well network security is always a good thing to be knowledgeable in.
06:35 astro73|mal keep coding, and you might get work in your own company
06:35 sndwrx Get that under your belt and pursue programming if that's what you'd like to do.
06:35 astro73|mal i've got half a CS degree; most of what I know comes from the 10 years I've been programming
06:36 splint sndwrx: oh yea without a doubt the net sec market is amazing, and i really DO enjoy it... I just find myself staying up till 5AM debugging not hacking/securing most nights.
06:36 * sndwrx nods.
06:37 splint astro73: Yea I really need to take a data structures class though, i need to memorize some factory methods.  See i have a huge interest in AI except that isn't simple programming
06:37 astro73|mal "memorize factory methods"
06:37 astro73|mal i don't memorize much. that's what API docs are for
06:38 splint astro73: Er well by that i guess i mean more get better with making OOP in general, that's a bit more accurate.  I mean i knwo a lot more than most but compared to anyone that is an actual programmer i am a child.

06:46 astro73|mal splint, my advice? use django.
06:47 splint astro73: yea i did actually, i had users logging in and stuff. I ran into a problem though and just kind of lost momentum on the project

15:30 Seroster SparkyProjects,
15:31 Seroster A wall mounted timer
15:31 Seroster When you hit the button on it the indicator light goes on, and instantly off.
15:32 SparkyProjects Make/model ?
15:32 Seroster Erm
15:33 Seroster LEXEL timers AT10A
15:33 Seroster Set to 15 minutes
15:34 Seroster Got feeds for P in Pout Nin Nout
15:34 Seroster Resistive load (60watt bulb) - 240volts 50hz
15:35 Seroster Same result with different or no load
15:35 Seroster I was hoping you would be like "AH, THAT problem! It's really common and easy to fix, here's how:"
15:35 SparkyProjects http://se.snb.leon.se/Downloads/PDF/monteringsanvisningar/mi2225.pdf
15:39 SparkyProjects Well there would be some sort of latch circuit, does the lamp come on when you press the button ?
15:44 Cprossu I wish I wasnt't sick as a dog today.
15:44 Cprossu http://downloads.bfads.net/BFAds-Frys-Electronics-2011.pdf
15:45 Cprossu interesting stuff this year
15:48 Seroster Yes, it comes on and instantly dies
15:48 Seroster It got two one pole relays instead of one double pole
15:50 SparkyProjects Relays ?
15:50 SparkyProjects That's old, my guess is that one relay is power to load, other will be a latch relay on a timer.
15:52 Seroster Nope
15:52 Seroster One relay is blue in to blue out, the other is brown in to brown out
15:53 Seroster The timer (i think) is solid state
15:54 Seroster Its a multi layer PCB so I cant track stuff on it
15:54 Seroster Btw, the timer circuit
15:55 Seroster There is just a handful holemounted stuff on this thing, an indicator led, the button, a potentiometer, the relays, a brown red black green resistor and an electrolytic capacitor
15:56 Seroster Does the timer circuit work like when the capacitor is fully charged it opens? and you can time how long it takes for the cap to charge by manipulating the resistance of the feed to it (the potentiometer)?
15:57 Seroster Because then a dead capacitor should mean it registers "hey, it doesnt charge anymore, so it's full, i'll turn off now", right?
15:59 SparkyProjects If that is the only components, i don't know why the pcb is multilayer :P
15:59 SparkyProjects But suspect the cap.
15:59 Seroster They are the only HOLE components
15:59 Seroster There is a boatload of sfm on the other side
16:00 Seroster If I cut off the cap it should stay open forever, right? (for testing purposes)
16:03 SparkyProjects If you cut off the cap, it could be the dc smothing cap.
16:04 SparkyProjects The sfm would be the timing, and probably has sfm caps too
16:05 SparkyProjects Have you tried it on different time settings ?
16:05 SparkyProjects switch could be dirty
16:06 Seroster Yes
16:06 Seroster Tried them all
16:07 SparkyProjects Then i would gess blown timer.

17:03 egrsteve hi seroster
17:06 Cprossu so happy turkey day egrsteve
17:08 Cprossu I think we all know what ponko will be up to
17:09 egrsteve the day one species stops gobbling, and another gobbles
17:09 egrsteve watching the lions loose?
17:10 Cprossu now I've infected you it seems with the lose loose confusion bug.
17:10 Cprossu damn thing's contagious
17:11 egrsteve I have had that one for a while now
17:11 * Cprossu wonders if the post office worker will mind it being sent to Mr. ForEgrStevesEvilUse
17:12 Cprossu well whatever
17:12 Cprossu lol
17:13 Cprossu (Tehcnically the full name would be Mr. Cprossu ForEgrStevesEvilUse)
17:13 Cprossu but we do with what we have, eh egrsteve?
17:15 egrsteve we try
17:17 Cprossu so I saw cory come into the lab this morning
17:17 Cprossu anyone of interest going to be there today?
17:18 egrsteve idk
17:18 egrsteve is it fun watching all the cameras
17:18 egrsteve getting to see people move around a bit
17:18 egrsteve well 2 hallways
17:19 Cprossu speaking of all the cameras, we're going to have to reboot the jupiter server, or find out what's up with it, I may install a secondary method of local remote control onto it
17:19 egrsteve hopefully I will have cam looking across and down from radio soon
17:19 Cprossu also we'll have to decide new labels
17:19 Cprossu for the inputs
17:19 egrsteve ya, that would be good
17:22 Cprossu for some reason the jupiter network server only behaves if I am in the same room with it
17:22 Cprossu idk why
17:27 egrsteve it's scared of you
17:30 Cprossu ooooh I know
17:30 Cprossu it saw all the power supplies I mutilated in front of it
17:30 Cprossu musta been like that scene from "The Brave Little Toaster" for that thinkcentre
17:30 Cprossu actually that nearly rhymes

18:40 Cprossu injektion: the funny thing is how many we have.
18:41 Cprossu newegg musta stole them from us!
18:41 injektion I have one like that but it has a slim optical drive and no floppy
18:42 Cprossu all ours are similar to that one
18:42 Cprossu (though 1/4 of them have blown caps)
18:42 mashpriborintorg it's the same model Chris gave away at halloween ? seems it was made my gazillions
18:42 Cprossu yes. roughly
18:42 Cprossu though I think the ones we gave away were the 2.6's
18:42 injektion http://images.rasmuscatalog.com/MedInt%20M825/small/10538.jpg
18:43 mashpriborintorg and bad caps were made by megazillions :p
18:43 Cprossu well the blown caps in the thinkcentre's
18:43 Cprossu and intellicenters
18:43 Cprossu were mostly not due to bad selection
18:43 Cprossu they were due to baking.
18:43 injektion ^
18:44 injektion Those things get HOT HOT HOT
18:44 injektion The P4 doesn't really help either
18:44 mashpriborintorg HPs are a good source for bad caps too
18:44 injektion I am going to temperately use the TC I have as a domain controller
18:44 Cprossu mashpriborintorg: they didn't like to run their fans very high (HP that is)
18:44 mashpriborintorg at least it is an easy to identify failure
18:44 Cprossu if you see a nippon chemicon (brown label tri-vent) cap that blew, it was due to high temp
18:45 injektion Thanks for reminding me to check my TC

18:56 Cprossu well I guess the question is what do you need the server _for_ injektion?
18:57 injektion Terminal server
18:57 Av_Nekoroms the server is terminal
18:57 Ponko alright Av_Nekoroms
18:57 injektion Cprossu, The OS will probably be 2008 R2
18:58 Av_Nekoroms vmware vsphere
18:59 Ponko how's everyones thanksgiving
19:00 injektion Av_Nekoroms, Why would I need Vsphere
19:02 * Ponko might as well not be here

19:02 Av_Nekoroms injektion: beats me.. but doesnt everyone need it
19:02 injektion VS is too complicated for what I want
19:11 Cprossu using 2008 r2 for terminal services seems a little overdoing it
19:12 Cprossu but that server would be OK, not the best power efficiency in the world, abd ut might be a pain in the ass to find a power supply for if it goes out
19:12 Cprossu also it doesn't appear to have redundant psu's

19:36 injektion I'm really upset about the recent infrastructure issues which have caused me endless stress
19:36 dbshortwave i would turn that into a NAS server
19:36 Cprossu either of those (supermicro and hp) look like darn nice machines
19:37 Cprossu there is another option we could take and shave some bucks off of
19:37 injektion The supermicro does have one thing going for it: low noise output
19:37 Cprossu either of those also have 'new' and 'efficient' going for them too
19:37 wannabe1987 BotSteve: tell ponko that wannabe is saddend that he wasn't here watching the football game on irc :P
19:37 BotSteve wannabe1987: I'll pass that on when ponko is around.
19:37 injektion Xenons are so fucking expensive
19:38 Cprossu these are cheap for xeons though
19:38 Cprossu and they are powerful.
19:38 Cprossu we can get a "non K" sandy bridge and get the same virtualisation and server addons though
19:39 injektion I'm unsure about using viritualization because vmware view is so expesnive
19:39 Cprossu having the option is a good idea
19:40 injektion I have a valid 2008 R2 license which I got very cheaply
19:40 * egrsteve prepares for turkey coma
19:40 injektion Energy efficiency isn't too much of a concern here yet before I say anything else let me confirm that

19:41 Cprossu % that's not much cheaper than the xeon sadly.
19:42 Cprossu so yeah Xeon E3 series is I'd say what you'd want.
19:43 injektion I've never done bare metal virtualization so I am confused on where to start
19:43 injektion If I was to max out the HP and SM how many OSes could I have running at once with good performance?
19:44 Cprossu it all depends on what you are doing with those os's
19:44 Cprossu I'd say if just terminal services/basically unlimited until you run outa ram
19:44 injektion My brother mainly uses a computer for: web browsing, the occasional PDF, and youtube

22:42 wannabe1987 its an old dell desktop, windows xp....how can i tell?
22:42 Cprossu it's more based on the bios than antyhing else
22:43 Cprossu easiest way to tell is to get a usb drive, make it bootable, put it in, and see if you can boot off of it
22:43 Cprossu unless you have the model # that is
22:43 wannabe1987 its downstairs, not booted up

23:42 lwq1996 damn :(
23:42 Monkeh tehdark45: I doubt it
23:42 injektion Cprossu: what sucked about it is it the aligning of the fibres  or the fact you have to remain super clean
23:42 Monkeh tehdark45: There shouldn't be that much weight difference between solid and stranded
23:42 lwq1996 yup
23:42 Cprossu injektion: what sucks is the resin.
23:42 Monkeh And I don't see why anyone would donate stranded
23:43 Cprossu and getting everything just right
23:43 Monkeh It costs twice as much and isn't normally used for fixed wiring for a good reason
23:43 Cprossu and the strain relief is annoying
23:43 Cprossu and the splice is GIGANTIC
23:43 Cprossu as a result
23:44 Cprossu ^ talking fiber splicing
23:44 lwq1996 um is there any reason a cap woulnt keep a charge for more that about 3sec
23:44 Cprossu everything about it sucks, it's easier to run a new line if you're in the scenario or repairing a run with a splice
23:44 Cprossu lwq1996: bleed off resistor
23:44 Cprossu and I see it must be working eh?
23:45 lwq1996 but i like fiber in the fact you can work on it when its transmiting and not get shocked
23:45 lwq1996 there is not resistor on it
23:45 Monkeh tehdark45: Now you've got me curious I'm going to check the numbers.
23:45 lwq1996 maby in it?

23:46 Cprossu very brittle.
23:46 lwq1996 must been glass fiber
23:46 Cprossu putting a STP connector on
23:46 tehdark45 Oh
23:46 Cprossu yeah of course it was glass fiber lol
23:47 lwq1996 well regular glass fiber
23:47 lwq1996 because that shit gets sharp easy
23:47 Cprossu it comes that way
23:47 injektion I hate using webchat
23:47 Cprossu doesn't help when you polish it.
23:47 Cprossu then don't injektion
23:47 injektion This is not my PC
23:47 Monkeh lwq1996: Comms wiring doesn't much more than tingle
23:47 Cprossu run a respectable irc client off a thumb drive then injektion?
23:48 injektion Probably should start doing that
23:48 injektion Still need to talk to my dad about the server idea
23:48 lwq1996 anyone got a good camera app software for ubuntu
23:49 lwq1996 like to take picutres from a webcam
23:49 injektion I know I need to do something soon
23:49 lwq1996 *pictures
23:50 Cprossu * I think I meant to say ST connector
23:50 Cprossu but still
23:50 Cprossu hated it
23:50 tehdark45 injektion, wat kind of server?
23:50 Monkeh tehdark45: For Belden cable, stranded is a whole pound heavier for 1000ft.
23:50 injektion tehdark45: terminal server
23:51 * Monkeh converts to real numbers
23:51 tehdark45 Monkeh, see for chris thats a whole 100lb
23:51 tehdark45 kik
23:51 tehdark45 lol*
23:52 tehdark45 injektion, make a tunnel from school.
23:52 Cprossu you know stranded wouldn't be so bad to crimp, if the rj45's you use with it weren't staggered
23:52 Monkeh Cprossu: The problem is getting the sodding pairs where you want and keeping them there. Solid just stays put.
23:53 astro73|alice w00t! CouchDB is working!
23:53 Cprossu you also know what messes me up?
23:53 Cprossu that cat5 that has bonded pairs.
23:53 tehdark45 Cprossu, so moral of story, always use solid?
23:53 Cprossu the bonded pair stuff is solid that I am thinking of
23:53 Cprossu yeah
23:54 Monkeh tehdark45: Unless you're making a patch cable for a laptop, yes, there's no point in stranded.
23:54 Monkeh Cprossu: bonded?
23:54 Cprossu as in the pairs are molded together
23:54 Monkeh Never seen that but it makes sense
23:54 injektion tehdark45: I am not in school yet
23:54 Cprossu it does but it's annoying to work with
23:55 tehdark45 injektion, well a hotspot then
23:55 Cprossu it's more for the telcom side than crimping it into jacks
23:55 tehdark45 a tunnel from a hotspot
23:55 Cprossu but we use what we have, and sadly that's what we had at the lab one of the days I was there
23:55 Monkeh Cprossu: Could be worse.
23:55 Cprossu for sure.
23:56 Monkeh Cprossu: If some bastard has donated external-grade cat5e you'll have lots of fun.
23:56 Monkeh That or some of that stuff is alu crap
23:56 Cprossu I'd have found the jacks that went with it, and found a lever for my crimper Monkeh lol

23:56 Monkeh Cprossu: Never seen one which goes with external stuff.
23:56 tehdark45 i r back
23:56 Monkeh Cprossu: It's double-sheathed and not particularly flexible.
23:57 Cprossu tbh it looks just like a regular jack
23:57 Cprossu and I know what you are talking about
23:57 exor674 joined #thegeekgroup
23:57 Monkeh Cprossu: Must be thin as hell then, because this stuff won't go inside a normal one.
23:57 Cprossu I've noticed that there are huge variances in cat6
23:57 Cprossu and what's easier to crimp
23:58 Cprossu some of it's easy, some of it's a screaming bitch
23:58 Monkeh Cprossu: Petroleum gelly filled bedding layer with a hard PVC outer is the sort of external cable I get.
23:58 Monkeh Cprossu: Of course, I could be a git and use SWA.. ;) (actually, iirc most of it is AWA these days)
23:58 Cprossu oooooh
23:58 Ponko hmmm
23:58 Cprossu that's interesting.
23:59 Cprossu that would be underground rated too right Monkeh?
23:59 Monkeh Cprossu: Either would e
23:59 Cprossu (by underground I mean underground, no plenum of course)
