00:46 injektion I really don't want to use Fortres 101
00:47 ynos Cprossu: you around?
00:51 injektion I really HATE working on the children's PC at the women's shelter
00:51 Sgt_Lemming ...?
00:51 wannabe1987 ...?
00:52 wannabe1987 dude, the last shelter i was in didn't have a PC....we had to use the pay phone :P
00:52 sndwrx Nice.
00:52 wannabe1987 they were also down the street from the library :P
00:52 sndwrx For those that aren't already familiar:  Don't ever, under any circumstances, purchase services through or seek employment by Clear/Clearwire.
00:53 wannabe1987 my friend did internet from them...it wasn't the best, but he brought the internet reciever to his desk job and had his own network :P
00:53 injektion wannabe1987, It's the fact that they trash it and they have found ways around the web filtering software
00:54 wannabe1987 ahhhh they're kids, they're smart and stupid like that
00:54 sndwrx injektion: Is it just a web kiosk?
00:54 injektion No
00:54 injektion It's a full desktop
00:54 sndwrx What other purposes does it serve?
00:54 injektion All the children do is school homework and web browsing
00:54 sndwrx So... An office suite and a web browser.
00:55 injektion Yes
00:55 sndwrx Linux.
00:55 wannabe1987 PENGUINS!
00:55 sndwrx Secure an IceWM session or whatever your favorite GUI is.
00:55 sndwrx Include LibreOffice and Firefox (Or Chromium).
00:55 injektion I tried Linux once and no one wanted to use it because "it didn't have internet explorer"
00:55 sndwrx Use OpenDNS for web filtering.
00:55 sndwrx Too bad.  It browses the internet.
00:56 wannabe1987 name firefox or chrome internet explorer :P
00:56 sndwrx Yeah, there you go.  Replace the icon and rename it.
00:57 sndwrx Do you volunteer services or do they pay you?
00:57 injektion They pay me
00:58 sndwrx Then you can keep cleaning up a stupid PC on a monthly basis and billing them, and tell them that's what's going to happen.  Or you can offer them a relatively permanent solution and they won't have to come out of pocket for your services again for a while.
00:58 wannabe1987 sndwrx: you needed stuff donated to the library?  ask boden if they have spares....
00:59 sndwrx wannabe1987: Good thought, but I don't know him very well.
00:59 wannabe1987 so?
00:59 wannabe1987 tell him your an irc member
00:59 wannabe1987 or register for the forums and tell him you're a forum member too :P
01:00 sndwrx We met a couple times during and after GiveCamp, but that's it.
01:00 wannabe1987 the last guy i brought him ended up being their new HV expert :P
01:00 wannabe1987 ah
01:00 sndwrx I was all fired up about become active around there while I talked with Dave about it... Haven't been back since and that was a month ago.  :P
01:00 sndwrx I just haven't had the time lately.
01:01 wannabe1987 TIME.  its what everyone needs more of.....
01:01 wannabe1987 dave is nice tho
01:01 sndwrx Yeah he's pretty cool.
01:01 wannabe1987 for being a ginger and all :P
01:01 sndwrx He and his girlfriend(?) gave me a ride home.
01:01 wannabe1987 mhm
01:02 * sndwrx growls.
01:03 wannabe1987 down boy!
01:03 sndwrx ntldr error.
01:03 injektion sndwrx, As much as I hate to say it it's just that the current administration of the shelter would rather stick with Windows + Office there is nothing I can do about that
01:03 sndwrx injektion: If they don't mind shelling out the cash to pay for it, to each their own.
01:04 sndwrx I realize the "lol switch to linux, yo" mentality isn't appropriate for all environments.  However, when it's a limited functionality public kiosk, Linux is a pretty good bet.
01:04 injektion I'd rather keep windows myself because the residents there will eat you alive if something does't look right
01:05 sndwrx They should be grateful they have access to a computer at all.
01:05 wannabe1987 grrr people and ungratefulness
01:05 wannabe1987 exactly!
01:05 sndwrx Obviously if they knew how to admin a computer, then they'd be handling it.  Such as things are, you're the admin.  You make the judgement call and they deal with it.
01:05 injektion For example when a document that was created in an MS Office app and they open it in OO.org or Libre Office and the formatting is off they will bitch and moan until they have access to MS office
01:06 sndwrx They shouldn't have created the file in MS Office in the first place.
01:06 * sndwrx *rimshot*
01:06 wannabe1987 lol
01:06 sndwrx trollolololololololololololololololololol
01:06 wannabe1987 i use openoffice...its cheaper :P
01:07 wannabe1987 i deal with word enough at grandmas house
01:07 wannabe1987 or at home on the desktop
01:07 injektion The school system where the shelter is located is 100% MS
01:08 injektion Except for the AS/400 iSeries which is for student records and some horrible java based gradebook
01:08 wannabe1987 dog likes goose jerky....
01:09 sndwrx injektion: Doesn't surprise me.
01:09 dr_jkl yawn
01:09 wannabe1987 the elementary school here the kids use macs, but in middle and high school (afaik) they use windows....
01:09 injektion Using MS Office doesn't bother me
01:09 injektion I quite like it
01:09 wannabe1987 hi dr_jkl
01:10 injektion Not to mention LO still needs java (eek)
01:13 sndwrx blargh!
01:14 wannabe1987 blargh?
01:15 sndwrx I know chkdsk, bootcfg and fixmbr aren't going to fix this.
01:15 sndwrx I'm rapidly becoming frustrated at the resistance this P2V migration has exhibited.
01:15 wannabe1987 why don't restaurants post prices online :(
01:15 wannabe1987 take a break?
01:15 sndwrx Leaving in a few minutes anyway.
01:15 wannabe1987 ok

01:52 sndwrx It's taken over 40 minutes for chkdsk to reach 70%, the first 50% or so was pretty fast.
01:53 sndwrx There's no way it's going to complete the last 30% in seven minutes.
01:53 wannabe1987 lol
01:53 sndwrx In seven minutes I either pull the plug or leave it going overnight while I go home.
01:53 wannabe1987 leave it going....it'll finish eventually!

03:54 Sgt_Lemming it's the same old idea of putting a pinpong ball in the toilet when you have a party, gives people something to aim at
03:54 wannabe1987 ...

04:13 wannabe1987 my friend lives on the lake and her dad skiis there
04:13 sndwrx By "personal watercraft" they may be referring to jetskis.
04:14 wannabe1987 probably, cuz them is not allowed
04:14 sndwrx But even still, it isn't an all sports lake if they're not permitted.

04:27 egrsteve|away I could use mac mail, but i moved to mozilla years ago as that was a bit rough at the time
04:27 Toastdude Thanks BotSteve
04:27 BotSteve You're welcome, Toastdude
04:27 sndwrx Yeah?
04:29 egrsteve|away every mozilla product I have used seems to have exsessive memory footprint and leakage
04:29 egrsteve|away with 1gb to work with I can't afford leaks

04:32 egrsteve ya, 06
04:33 * sndwrx nods.
04:33 sndwrx Same here.
04:33 sndwrx A1181
04:33 egrsteve toasted one ram controller so only ram in second slot or it crashes
04:33 sndwrx Aha, I was going to ask..
04:33 sndwrx My other Macbook shit on the second RAM slot.
04:34 egrsteve nice
04:34 sndwrx So it only works with the first slot.
04:34 sndwrx Otherwise I may have been able to offer you some RAM, and I may be at the lab Wednesday.
04:34 egrsteve so I'm not the only one to kill the ram controller
04:34 sndwrx But I don't have a two gig stick or anything to offer.
04:35 sndwrx Yeah, I have no idea what happened to it.
04:35 egrsteve I have a 512 on the shelf, but it makes things much worse
04:35 egrsteve I hope to replace it in the spring
04:35 sndwrx It just stopped booting.  I had to reset the PRAM and do some silly jig, then it finally started working with the first slot only.
04:35 egrsteve macbook pro line is due for an update
04:35 egrsteve sounds like mine
04:36 egrsteve I would like to replace it with a 15" it's only about an ich bigger than my 13 now

04:37 Sgt_Lemming not even 2 months ago
04:37 egrsteve the macbook pro has?
04:37 Sgt_Lemming yup
04:37 Sgt_Lemming current release was october 24 2011
04:37 egrsteve it got thiunderbolt last spring and I though that was the last update
04:37 egrsteve hmm, i might have t check that
04:38 Sgt_Lemming just a minor spec bump
04:38 egrsteve ao they did the lowe cost one now has duel graphics as well
04:39 sndwrx Dual graphics?
04:39 Sgt_Lemming err
04:39 Sgt_Lemming the 13" is still intel graphics only
04:39 egrsteve intell 3000
04:39 Sgt_Lemming it's only the 15 and 17 that get a proper GPU
04:39 egrsteve better than the ?540 in my macbook now
04:40 sndwrx 540?
04:40 sndwrx If you have the A1181, it's GMA950.
04:40 egrsteve thats what it is 950

04:57 wannabe1987 its an oratorio, not a play/book
04:57 wannabe1987 seriously, whats up with people not knowing classical music?!
04:58 splint If i hadn't wikipedia'd oratorio i would be at a loss yet again.  There is no classical music classes in america / american colleges, atlest none that i have been to!
04:59 killaway^readZZz joined #thegeekgroup
04:59 wannabe1987 i took a music appreciation course at calvin and they taught about the foundations of music, which is classical music, because without that, there wouldn't be no hip hop today....or pop, rock, country, *insert music genre here*
05:01 masterofmonks What about folk style music?
05:01 splint sounds like it was a lot of fun. I wouldn't mind appreciating some classical music.  I mean i actually really enjoy it just don't know anything about it.
05:02 wannabe1987 sure masterofmonks
05:02 masterofmonks Considering that predates classical music.
05:03 wannabe1987 lol then no
05:04 wannabe1987 i didn't know what you meant by folk
05:05 masterofmonks Also I find that the westernized view of "classical" music is a bit snobbish, because it has this strange presumption that no music existed before the renaissance.
05:05 egrsteve folk: see folk
05:06 wannabe1987 i didn't mean that, mom....
05:07 egrsteve classical is good as is folk and celtic and...
05:07 masterofmonks wannabe1987: I know what you intended, however I have taken music appreciation, and it is the view taught in these classes.
05:08 wannabe1987 yeah, i sat in on a few of the classes, and was taking music theory myself.....
05:08 egrsteve for all I care we can ignore country and rap, that just doesn't do it for me
05:08 masterofmonks egrsteve: I have found that european rap tends to be listenable.
05:09 egrsteve can't say I have listened to europian rap

05:11 masterofmonks wannabe1987: have you been afflicted by this condition your entire life?
05:11 wannabe1987 no
05:11 masterofmonks egrsteve: Ja, do you find it listenable?
05:12 masterofmonks wannabe1987: When did you notice the first symptoms?
05:12 egrsteve definatly more musical and understandabele than american
05:12 wannabe1987 fall 2005
05:13 masterofmonks Was it a traumatic event?
05:13 wannabe1987 no
05:14 egrsteve no, more humorious
05:14 egrsteve England has been the source of many great bands
05:19 egrsteve Beatles, pink floyd, led zeppelin, rolling stones wct
05:19 egrsteve *ect
05:19 wannabe1987 so i'm falling asleep now, night all
05:20 egrsteve night
05:21 egrsteve for newer stuff theres radio head, muse
05:21 egrsteve why does britain get so many good bands
05:22 egrsteve I know they share but still America needs a rock revival
05:22 masterofmonks egrsteve: Well it's complicated.
05:22 masterofmonks Led Zeppelin is essentially a blues band.
05:23 masterofmonks Blues of course came from america.
05:23 egrsteve I know, I was not limiting genre there
05:23 masterofmonks Rock and Roll, is an american sound, went to england became big.
05:24 egrsteve odd isn't it
05:24 masterofmonks Most of your metal styles started here, and went to europe.
05:24 egrsteve the Brits took it and added somethign to it
05:25 egrsteve the british tone is a lot cleaner the all the heavy distorsion here, almost more bluesy
05:25 masterofmonks Here is youre difference.
05:26 masterofmonks How much difference is there between someone from say Illinois and Michigan?
05:26 egrsteve a bit but not a ton
05:26 egrsteve mostly the same
05:26 masterofmonks How about France and Germany?
05:26 egrsteve more different but still some in common
05:27 masterofmonks Including different languages?
05:27 egrsteve yes..
05:27 egrsteve .
05:27 masterofmonks So perspective for a moment.
05:27 egrsteve ok
05:28 masterofmonks The language you speak effects the way you think.
05:28 egrsteve true
05:28 masterofmonks It isn't just that Russians are sarcastic, part of it is the language.
05:29 egrsteve sarcasm isn't a geek think? news to me
05:29 egrsteve *thing
05:30 masterofmonks So you have bands that travel through europe and through all of these different languages, and you expect that they would not have influence from that?
05:30 masterofmonks Sarcasm is not a geek thing.
05:30 masterofmonks I for one rarely use it.
05:31 egrsteve maybe it's just the geek circles I run in then
05:31 egrsteve true with the cultural diversity comes musical diversity
05:32 masterofmonks Which is why here in America, your most interesting music comes from places of diverse culture.
05:32 egrsteve good point

06:55 splint I've got a spanning tree.  It is a list of tuples.  Each tuple is made of two tuples, a node, and a "neighbor" node, aka there is a wall between the node and neighbor node.
06:56 splint I need a way to output the spanning tree so that it looks like a maze!  So if point 0,0 has a wall with 0,1 and 1,0 those points will have some kind of "wall" character between them and the "node" characters.
06:59 BatSteve hmmmm
06:59 BatSteve Can each node only have one neighbor?
07:00 BatSteve Or does each node contain information about each of it's neighbors, even though that introduces redundancy?
07:01 splint Each node contains information about it's neighbors.  However when the runner reaches a node it has been at, no neighbors are set.  So it's not terribly redundant.
07:01 splint It's not like 0,0 has neighbor 1,0 and 1,0 has neighbor 0,0
07:02 BatSteve Ah.  Yes, that's what I meant.
07:02 splint Yea that shouldn't happen but since each node can have up to four neighbors i can't gurantee it never will.
07:03 BatSteve It seems like the first thing I would try is to order the list by nodes (top to bottom maybe?) and then draw each row
07:04 BatSteve Is this homework?

07:44 splint That idea is good my biggest issue is vertical walls between nodes.  I'll try and get it tomorrow... I think i need to rework the whole system since all examples i have seen are where the runner moves between the nodes not to the nodes and makes walls as it goes...  Oh well, thanks for the input it helped =)

19:26 wannabe1987 i have $10 in the bank, no savings

19:33 mashpriborintorg the trees dislike this, injektion
19:33 SparkyProjects Seroster, no i haven't got one of those, my drills are mainly in cases with holes of  the right size, i only got the idea when i saw the drill rack
19:33 injektion They grow trees especially for paper
19:34 mashpriborintorg if every mobile phone receives a printer...
19:34 Monkeh SparkyProjects: How do they cope with those crazy imperial drill sizes?
19:36 SparkyProjects Imperial was used before metric iirc, so the metric are an approximation of imperial
19:36 SparkyProjects You should see a set of machine drills where sizes go ip in 32nds, or64ths, the set is huge
19:36 mashpriborintorg imperial wrenches are already hard to find in shops here, imperial drills are just unobtainium
19:37 injektion mashpriborintorg, I am probably the only one that uses a dot matrix printer to print out event logs
19:37 Monkeh SparkyProjects: I have.
19:37 Monkeh SparkyProjects: I think you'll find a proper metric set has no approximations. It has 3mm, 3.1mm, 3.2mm, 3.3mm, etc. ;)
19:38 angy I think I have an epson dot-matrix somewhere
19:39 wannabe1987 ok tiem for job interview bye
19:40 Monkeh Imperial units are insanity. 17/64"? Just give me a 6.8mm and go away.
19:41 tonsofpcs Monkeh: just keep multiplying by 1/2 and adding 1/[whatever] ;)
19:43 Monkeh tonsofpcs: ... Nah, I'll just use metric.
19:46 mashpriborintorg however I think that imperial screw treads are more strong than metric ones
19:47 Monkeh mashpriborintorg: I think you'll find the use of metric or imperial has no relevance to strength.
19:47 tonsofpcs Bit-52s: http://youtu.be/a2SnYa2aJNo

19:48 tonsofpcs Monkeh: my 1/4-30 screws are much stronger than M3s!
19:48 tonsofpcs :-p
19:48 SparkyProjects Screw threads are a different ballgame, you have AF, Whitworth, Metric, BA, and probably some others
19:48 Monkeh SparkyProjects: And sometimes it's almost impossible to tell one from the other..
19:49 mashpriborintorg it is about the ratio between the tread width and deep true ?
19:49 tonsofpcs in other news: my compound wedge is better than your simple wedge
19:50 SparkyProjects oh, and don't forget left hand threads
19:51 SparkyProjects http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screw_thread
19:51 BotSteve Title: Screw thread - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
19:51 mashpriborintorg yeah.. along with some oddities, as excentric screws
19:53 mashpriborintorg OMG so many thread types :p
19:54 SparkyProjects Note that all camera mounting screws (tripod) are BSW (2 sizes)
19:54 Monkeh mashpriborintorg: And then there's all the various non-machine threads.
19:55 tonsofpcs only 2 sizes?
19:55 Monkeh tonsofpcs: puny and not so puny.
19:56 mashpriborintorg I know that finding replacement screws for vintage devices are a PITA
19:56 Monkeh Even new stuff can be a pain.
19:56 SparkyProjects That's why it's good to have a set of thread taps and dies
19:56 tonsofpcs Monkeh: well, we have 1/4-20 and 1/2ish? I forget the size of the other...
19:57 Monkeh I fitted a ceiling fan which had BSW threads for certain parts recently.
19:57 Monkeh Brand new.
19:57 mashpriborintorg in particular for things made before the 60's or 70's, before ISO
19:57 Monkeh Damned pain because I needed an extra screw. Ended up jamming a UNC into it.
19:57 Monkeh tonsofpcs: 1/4 and 3/4.
19:57 Monkeh Sorry, 3/8
19:57 SparkyProjects Ever try to find a nut for the chinese screws you remove from scrap equipment ?
19:57 SparkyProjects They don't seem to be the same metric standards
19:58 tonsofpcs right, 3/8.  3/8-what though?
19:58 mashpriborintorg and there are cheap chinese screws also
19:58 tonsofpcs is it 20 as well?
19:58 Monkeh SparkyProjects: They're just really, really cheaply machined from soft crap.
19:58 SparkyProjects 3/8BSW
19:58 mashpriborintorg which does not even fit the cheap chinese screwdrivers :p
19:58 tonsofpcs our 1/4" is 1/4-20...
19:58 Monkeh tonsofpcs: It's Whitworth.
19:58 Monkeh tonsofpcs: 1/4 is 20 TPI, 3/8 is 16 TPI.
19:59 SparkyProjects BSW = British Standard Whitworth
19:59 Monkeh tonsofpcs: We don't do this silliness of having fifteen different thread profiles for the same thing in one standard..
19:59 mashpriborintorg chinese sewing machines are a good source for such goofy hardware, SparkyProjects
19:59 Monkeh tonsofpcs: You want finer, then it's BSF, not BSW.
20:00 tonsofpcs Monkeh: yes you do.  It took me a month to find the right threaded screw for my projector mount.
20:00 Monkeh tonsofpcs: And what was it?
20:00 tonsofpcs because it wasn't the "standard" thread or the "fine" thread
20:00 Monkeh tonsofpcs: ... and what thread was it?
20:00 Monkeh tonsofpcs: Whitworth? Metric? BA?
20:00 tonsofpcs M3xsomething
20:01 Monkeh tonsofpcs: .. You realise that's an ISO standard.
20:01 Monkeh tonsofpcs: You've got course, fine, and extra fine. Pick one or it's not an M3.
20:01 tonsofpcs I forget exactly, but I found that it is apparently used for attaching rotors to model helicopters
20:01 Monkeh tonsofpcs: And actually, I don't think M3 comes in fine..
20:01 SparkyProjects M3 is 3mm, but there are a couple of styles (possibly fine and coarse)
20:01 Monkeh tonsofpcs: Perhaps it was not M3.
20:02 SparkyProjects usually written M3x (something)
20:02 mashpriborintorg ISO is great, but a little long to screw and the smaller ones can be easily worn out
20:02 tonsofpcs it was either M3*3 or M3*6
20:02 Monkeh tonsofpcs: Length != TPI.
20:02 tonsofpcs I'm just searching helicopter screws right now
20:03 Monkeh tonsofpcs: If it's an M3 thread then it's course unless otherwise specified. Length is not a problem, I can make an M3 of any length you fancy.
20:05 SparkyProjects Handy to know, some of the cheap (scissor type) cable crimpers have a bolt shear facillity, but when you cut them, only cut half way through and rotate the screw to cut the rest.
20:06 tonsofpcs SparkyProjects: why is that? (I don't use those POSs to cut bolts)
20:06 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Kinda hard to only go half way through.
20:06 Monkeh SparkyProjects: They have no cutting edge so it's more or less all or nothing.
20:07 SparkyProjects A set i used were ok, but cutting right through left a jagged edge, but if you release and rotate, you cut the other way
20:07 tonsofpcs release and rotate?  (see what Monkeh said about cutting edges)
20:07 Monkeh I'll stick with my mole grips and hacksaw
20:07 Monkeh (for small ones)
20:08 SparkyProjects I haven't got those crimpers any more, so yeah i have to use a saw now, always remember to put a nut on the bolt to clean the thread
20:09 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Also makes it easier to get a solid grip on the screw.
20:09 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Especially on big ones in a vice.
20:09 SparkyProjects Monkeh, i'm talking about the ones that have threaded holes for the bolts
20:10 Monkeh SparkyProjects: I know that. I'm talking about using a hacksaw.
20:14 injektion How in the hell can people get away with charging a lot for old PC hardware
20:15 mashpriborintorg because they paid a lot for it, years ago :p
20:15 mashpriborintorg same for old camcorders or digicams
20:16 mashpriborintorg they sell their stuff at higher prices that the new items you will find in shops
20:16 ynos why are we talking whitworth? someone need stronger threads, or are they working on some old iron?
20:17 mashpriborintorg just in need of threads not to get screwed, ynos
20:17 SparkyProjects whitworth is the thread used for camera tripod mounts
20:17 moxiemike_ can someone explain the difference between whitworth and UNC/UNF threads
20:18 moxiemike_ that should be 1/4-20
20:18 Monkeh moxiemike_: Sure. UNC is the crappy american ripoff which is different for no reason other than to be different.
20:18 moxiemike_ the american threads were easier to cut with our less-refined machinery at the time
20:18 ynos hmm, i think i will make a standard that will unify all atandards!
20:19 moxiemike_ ...there are now n+1 competing standards
20:19 ynos result, 1miilion and 1 standards in circulation
20:19 ynos right
20:19 Monkeh moxiemike_: Ah, so you made it crap because your tooling was crap.
20:19 moxiemike_ it was a long time ago
20:19 moxiemike_ so whitworth is an english thread?
20:19 ynos i use whitworth on a few projects from time to time..
20:19 ynos yeah
20:20 SparkyProjects In the early industrial revolution, if a factory wanted nuts and bolts they made their own, so if you now want to restore a piece of machinery and keep it near original you have to make from scratch
20:20 moxiemike_ so 45* thread cut instead of 60*
20:20 ynos only place i have seen it was in a jaguar, triumph and BSA..
20:20 Monkeh ynos: It's more or less gone, now.
20:20 ynos yup
20:20 Monkeh ynos: Although it crops up in annoying places from time to time.
20:20 ynos unless you work on old bikes or cars.
20:20 Monkeh ynos: As I mentioned earlier, I ran into it on a brand new ceiling fan recently.
20:21 Monkeh ynos: Had to jam a UNC into it because I could not obtain BSW with the correct head type.
20:21 Seroster RIghto SparkyProjects
20:21 ynos wha?
20:21 moxiemike_ i was talking with a co-worker about machining and he said he came upon a flange that had threaded studs
20:21 moxiemike_ the studs were threaded into the flange using whitworth and the rest of the stud was UNC
20:21 SparkyProjects ynos, i know my Triumph Herald only used AF, and you only needed 5 spanner sizes to strip it down
20:21 ynos the advantage (or so i've been told) of whitworth is thread strenght.. due to pitch and profile of the threads
20:22 Monkeh ynos: Not overly relevant for a grounding screw on a ceiling fan pole..
20:23 SparkyProjects Whitworth was coarser and didn't need so many turns to tighten
20:23 ynos wonder if that is why those old brit bikes lost hardwares soo often?
20:23 moxiemike_ i like metric
20:23 ynos didnt have as far to go :D
20:24 ynos metric is easier for sure.
20:24 ynos fractions are a pita
20:24 moxiemike_ there should be a video on the main channel about the different threads
20:24 mashpriborintorg and screw heads
20:24 Monkeh ynos: As I was saying, WTF is 17/64" all about?

21:29 Serostern LOL!
21:29 Seroster xD
21:30 Seroster I fond this GFI modle in the trash
21:30 Seroster Small box, a piece of DIN rail, GFI.
21:30 Seroster 10MA
21:30 Seroster So I decided to test it
21:31 Seroster First on, hooked a 1kw light to it, worked fine.  Then I tripped it and the 1kw light went off.  Then I shorted the phase to my radiator and it tripped. Along the other GFI and the main breaker xD
21:34 SparkyProjects 10mA earth trip ?
21:34 SparkyProjects If you had it connected correctly (earth tail bonded to ground), then the resistance of a finger should trip it (but don't try this)
21:40 Seroster SparkyProjects, I wouldnt
21:40 Seroster 10ma earth trip
21:40 Seroster Main gfi is 30
21:40 Seroster Fuse is 10a
21:44 SparkyProjects your supply is 240 isn't it ?
21:44 SparkyProjects A resistor of about 24kOhm will pass 10mA, so a bigger one from live to earth shouldn't trip it, but a lower resistance should.
21:44 Seroster Yes it is
21:45 Seroster Closer to 250 tbh
21:45 Seroster 26k shouldnt trip it but 23 should
21:45 SparkyProjects In theory, yes
21:46 Seroster In practice too
21:46 SparkyProjects The button on top (trip) usually has a resistor of just the right value to test trip it
21:48 Seroster Yes
21:48 Seroster But it only works when the gfi got a load, since what it does it it lets 10ma return another path than the neutral
21:50 SparkyProjects Should trip when only the supply is connected, providing it is correctly grounded.
21:50 Seroster not from what I can tell from the circuit diagram
21:51 Seroster And there is no ground going into the actual gfi
21:52 SparkyProjects For 'residual current devices' there is a resistor from live output to neutral input whicch causes an inbalance and that trrips them, no earth is needed on those devices.
21:52 SparkyProjects ah, so that gfi sounds like a rcd
21:52 Seroster It trips from gf too
21:53 Seroster And it says "GFI" on the damn thing =P
21:53 Seroster SIEMENS NFI Jordfelsbrytare 5Sz2 212-6A  1n16A 10mA 2pole  IP40 made in germany
21:55 SparkyProjects The old Square D GFI's we had always had an earth tail and were single pole.
21:55 SparkyProjects The rcd's that were like mcb's had a neutral tail  and no earth
21:57 Seroster Anyway
21:57 Seroster It's made by Seiemens, I'd trust it with my life.

22:14 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Single-pole RCBOs are electronic and need a functional (not protective) earth.
22:15 SparkyProjects I know
22:15 SparkyProjects But a double pole RCBO only needs to see an imbalance between live and neutral

22:28 Seroster Monkeh, Well... Right. After a second of thought it doesnt need one
22:29 Seroster But would the test resistor get hot if the test button was kept down for say an hour?
22:30 SparkyProjects Not if the breaker trips, as the resistor has one ned connected to the output of the breaker, so when the breaker trips, it disconnects the power
22:30 Seroster Right
22:30 Seroster Btw, what is the difference of RKK and FKK?
22:31 Seroster The strands in the conductor, right?
22:32 SparkyProjects Examples of context ?
22:32 Seroster Cables
22:32 Seroster RKK cable and FKK cable
22:32 Seroster Found it in an obscure pdf, it's the strands in the conductor
22:35 Monkeh Seroster: Sounds like some national spec I've never heard of.
22:36 Seroster I think its only scandinavia
22:36 Seroster Or shuko countries
22:36 Monkeh Right.

22:39 Monkeh SparkyProjects: FKK looks to be double-sheathed like hi-tuff.
22:39 * Seroster gets the dictionary
22:40 Monkeh Seroster: H05VV-F, yes.

22:40 Seroster NOFUCKINGBODY uses it
22:40 Monkeh Seroster: Why? It works and is portable.
22:40 Seroster And if you use it you should be shot with a twelve gauge
22:41 Monkeh Why?
22:41 Monkeh It's simple.
22:41 Seroster Its impossible to remember, and to say. "RKK" you can say, "H zero five V V F" is annoying
22:42 Monkeh Seroster: It's not impossible to remember, and generally you don't need to say it unless you're being very specific.
22:42 Monkeh Seroster: For example, if I want some H07RN-F, I'll just ask for rubber flex.
22:42 Seroster First letter conductor  second letter isolation third letter outer isolation or construction detail  fourth letter Use or construction detail
22:43 Monkeh Seroster: Insulation, not isolation.
22:43 Monkeh Seroster: And none of those specify whether it's suitable for three-phase use.
22:43 Seroster Crap, Monkeh =P
22:43 Seroster No, it doesnt. And it isnt designed to either.
22:44 IIsi50MHz Well, it does have the side-effect of isolating. (:
22:44 Monkeh Seroster: The harmonised code is.
22:44 Seroster What is the logic behind that system?
22:45 IIsi50MHz Sounds like a good title for a programming blog or book: Harmonised Code!
22:45 Monkeh Seroster: What's the logic behind 'FKK' and 'RKK' which make no sense at all if you don't speak the language?
22:45 Seroster First letter conductor  second letter insulation third letter outer insulation or construction detail  fourth letter Use or construction detail
22:45 Monkeh Seroster: Okay.. what does the F standard for?
22:46 Seroster First place? Few stranded copper
22:46 Seroster Third place? Copper braid
22:46 Seroster Fourth place? Copper braid.
22:46 Seroster K is always PVC insulation
22:46 Monkeh Okay, so.. how is it really any different to the harmonised code?
22:46 Monkeh Seroster: H05VV-F. Very simple.
22:47 Seroster SKJ is multi strand pvc insulated for under ground use
22:47 Seroster Monkeh, yes, I bet it is. My reason for asking you about the logic behind it is my way of saying "please tell me what the different letters and numbers mean"
22:47 Monkeh Seroster: I already explained them.
22:48 Monkeh Seroster: Harmonised, 300/500V insulation rating, PVC insulation, PVC sheath, fine stranded conductors.
22:48 Seroster Waitwhat.
22:48 Monkeh Seroster: Most often seen followed by 3G0.75
22:48 Seroster Clarify.
22:48 egrsteve|away ok, how do I roll back a windows system with only cmd acess

22:49 egrsteve|away *stomper
22:49 Seroster Lol
22:49 Monkeh Seroster: 3 = number of conductors, G = with ground.
22:50 Seroster It doesnt specify if it's 3ph or 2ph+n.
22:50 Monkeh Seroster: It will not be 3p without an earth.
22:50 Seroster Stranger shit has happened.
22:50 Monkeh Seroster: It will not be.
22:50 Seroster Stranger shit has happened.
22:51 Monkeh Seroster: And actually, it does.
22:51 Monkeh Seroster: 3G vs 3X.
22:51 Monkeh Seroster: 3G = three conductors _WITH GROUND_. 3X = three conductors.
22:54 Monkeh Seroster: Also, you may want to reconsider the whole 3p/2p+n(.. rare), in light of the rather common 7G0.75.
22:54 Monkeh Seroster: Plus these strange things called sleeves
