02:57 CaptainNiobe you haven't seen me once yet (except on youtube and maybe hsbne's webcam)
02:57 Monkeh|Lap And I forgot to get the one item I've wanted for a couple of YEARS in it :{
02:58 masterofmonks Monkeh, A titanium spatula with gold leaf?

02:58 Monkeh|Lap masterofmonks: No, but that'd be awesome.
02:58 wannabe1987 no thats what *you* wanted
02:58 CaptainNiobe elim. fuck you.
02:58 Monkeh|Lap I want a Maglite XL50.
02:58 Monkeh|Lap US price: $25.
02:58 Monkeh|Lap UK price: >$60
02:59 wannabe1987 lol she used your real name....you're in *big* trouble now :P
02:59 masterofmonks Yes, believe that.
02:59 masterofmonks One day I will tell you about True Names.

03:01 wannabe1987 lol
03:02 wannabe1987 middle name too?!
03:02 CaptainNiobe yup :D

03:18 tonsofpcs Monkeh: I'll send one to you.  Just send me the $25 plus about $60 for shipping
03:19 wannabe1987 lol
03:20 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Wouldn't cost nearly that much to ship :P
03:20 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: yea, but I want one for myself too :-p
03:20 Monkeh|Lap I've got a whole box of goodies coming which was $80.
03:20 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Buy your own. :P
03:20 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: eh, I don't really need one.
03:20 Monkeh|Lap Or become friends with a well earning guy from NC.. :P
03:20 tonsofpcs I have a minimag or two or three or twelve around here...
03:21 tonsofpcs (they're $10 in the case with holster and spare bulb...)
03:22 Monkeh|Lap I'm an LED man.
03:22 Monkeh|Lap Plus those are a little bulky
03:22 Monkeh|Lap (I have a 2AA LED)
03:22 tonsofpcs and it works in patented candle mode!
03:23 tonsofpcs http://www.maglite.com/images/aacell2_candlemode.jpg for those it isn't obviously silly to
03:23 tonsofpcs oh, it comes with the rubber anti-roll thing too
03:23 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Actually that comes in kinda handy from time to time
03:24 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: yea, but rarely does it come in handy being set on a table like that.
03:24 tonsofpcs bare bulb on the end of a stick is quite handy at times, ya
03:24 Monkeh|Lap Mine's a little less fragile. :)
03:24 tonsofpcs huh?
03:24 Monkeh|Lap LED
03:24 wannabe1987 i just borrow zozo's cell phone...he's got an app for that :P
03:25 Monkeh|Lap wannabe1987: So have I. ;)
03:25 tonsofpcs whoa, they apparently make a 3x AA LED minimag...
03:25 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Yep.
03:25 tonsofpcs that seems long....
03:25 Monkeh|Lap I'm curious as to whether their reg circuit can handle li-ions.
03:25 tonsofpcs if I'm getting a flashlight that big, why does it not have D-cells in it so it works as a beat-down stick too?
03:25 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: The AA one stores easier.
03:26 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: probably.  That said, most folks that I know with "LED maglights" buy the regular ones and a 3rd party conversion kit
03:26 Monkeh|Lap Yeah
03:26 Monkeh|Lap I got the LED one
03:26 Monkeh|Lap Friend has one with a different tailcap. Mine's iffy.
03:26 Monkeh|Lap Not like I open it much.
03:26 Monkeh|Lap I feed lithiums to torches.
03:27 tonsofpcs torches are made of fire here, feeding lithiums to them is a bad idea ;)
03:27 Monkeh|Lap I've got a 2D LED too
03:27 Monkeh|Lap I want the ML100 though
03:27 Monkeh|Lap 2C = very convenient size.
03:27 tonsofpcs 2C and 3C are nice.
03:28 tonsofpcs big enough to be beat sticks, small enough to keep in the cabin of a vehicle
03:28 Monkeh|Lap £63 over here..
03:28 tonsofpcs bright enough to blind that guy over there
03:28 Monkeh|Lap $40.
03:28 Monkeh|Lap Just triple the price guys. It's totally fine.
03:29 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: check the price for a 2C lamped one and an after-market LED 'replacement bulb'
03:29 Monkeh|Lap Yeah but that's sloppy. :P
03:29 tonsofpcs it's about $10 cheaper here and the LED 'replacement bulb' is imported.  Note that the flashlight itself is still US made though.
03:30 Monkeh|Lap But yes, very affordable.
03:30 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: like I said, most folsk I know with 'LED maglights' geet the normal ones and put a conversion in.  That's all maglight does, but they charge more.
03:30 Monkeh|Lap Maglite have a somewhat more robust design for the LED units.
03:30 tonsofpcs in fact, the early LED minimags (idk about the big ones) were sold as the regular minimag pack plus a LED bulb and on-off switch in the same package so you just assembled it how you wnted
03:31 * egrsteve buys a cheap torch from DX, feed it old dell 18650s and it works
03:31 Monkeh|Lap egrsteve: Yeah, that also works.
03:31 Monkeh|Lap I have a couple of cheapies, they're remarkably sturdy.
03:32 egrsteve I dropped one at the lab, (from the genie) and it still lives in my pocket to this day
03:32 tonsofpcs the ones they sell for like $1 at harbor freight aren't that bad, just poor QC on them, 1/4 [abt.] are useless.

03:32 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: These are better quality.
03:32 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: those are pretty much exactly the ones they sell at harbor freight....
03:33 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Trust me, I've handled the cheap ones over here compared to the DX version. They are not the same.
03:33 tonsofpcs the physical switch rubber might be a touch different
03:33 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: I own both.

03:33 Monkeh|Lap They look the same from a distance but there's a world of difference between the DX ones and the crap you can buy over here
03:33 egrsteve fell 25ft with only a minor ding in the case
03:34 egrsteve (that one uses 123s)
03:34 tonsofpcs http://www.harborfreight.com/35-inch-9-led-mini-flashlight-65020.html i think
03:34 BotSteve Title: 3.5" 9 LED Mini Flashlight
03:35 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: That's definitely not the same as the ones I have from DX.
03:35 Monkeh|Lap But at that price they're pretty disposable either way
03:36 Monkeh|Lap I treat mine as disposable, if I smash it I can have more easily.
03:36 Monkeh|Lap The expensive part is the lithiums I usually feed it.
03:36 Monkeh|Lap It eats alkalines too fast.
03:36 tonsofpcs feed it slower.
03:36 lwq1996 you know im going back through some old video's. and just WOW have we evolved
03:37 egrsteve I use rechargeables from mine, worth the investment
03:37 Monkeh|Lap egrsteve: Yeah, I just never have the money laying around to fork out for a charger.
03:37 Monkeh|Lap Plus, y'know, putting three 10440s in those probably won't go well
03:37 Monkeh|Lap NiMH AAAs are totally worthless
03:37 lwq1996 once you do buy a charger you'll be like, "wow how did i get along without these"
03:38 egrsteve I got one from DX, does what it needs to only cost 13ish
03:38 Monkeh|Lap lwq1996: Not really, I have nothing to feed li-ions to...
03:38 Monkeh|Lap I have NiMH batteries and charger. They're totally unsuitable for torches.
03:39 Monkeh|Lap Dedicated ones like the Magcharger are are different, but AAAs and AAs are hopeless for torches
03:39 Monkeh|Lap And I'm really not sure my torches would appreciate being fed well over twice their designed voltage.
03:40 egrsteve I spent about 25 for tourch, batteries and charger, worth it the way I use it

03:46 Toastdude Kelly!!
03:46 quacky i thought i heard him on the radio just a few minutes ago
03:46 tonsofpcs i got alkaline rechargables from woot, haven't needed to recharge em yet (they came 'charged')
03:46 quacky thats why i ask
03:46 wannabe1987 he coulda recorded a promo
03:47 quacky oh so he must record a lot
03:47 tonsofpcs quacky: I work at a TV/radio station(s).  I often here someone on two radio stations at the same time while I'm walking that same person walk down the hallway.
03:47 tonsofpcs *hear
03:48 tonsofpcs quacky: I know that his show gets recorded as a whole and played back later, too.
03:48 quacky really? wow i did not know that
03:49 tonsofpcs at least, I think it's his show
03:49 egrsteve works on 12V drew .3A with the random battery of unknown charge state
03:49 tonsofpcs he made mention the other day that something was going to be a repeat of the previous day's show because that day's didn't record right
03:49 quacky his show is a news show isnt it
03:50 tonsofpcs and?  The TV news here gets repeated probably 3 times in a night....
03:50 egrsteve so plan up to 1A for 2 batteries
03:50 egrsteve Monkeh|Lap: ^
03:50 Monkeh|Lap egrsteve: Label states 400mA.
03:51 * tonsofpcs plans to use up as many amps as he can [dialing them to 11 of course :-p]
03:51 egrsteve at 120v
03:51 Monkeh|Lap I'd imagine it just charges slower with two.
03:51 Monkeh|Lap egrsteve: No, 400mA from 12V.
03:51 egrsteve it has 2 independent charging circuits so idk
03:51 Monkeh|Lap Interesting
03:51 Monkeh|Lap Get another battery, man!
03:52 Monkeh|Lap I'm saying this like I don't have multiple 1A+ supplies floating around the place
03:52 egrsteve but I put the benchtop supply away already
03:52 Monkeh|Lap I can rig up about 20A worth if I really want to, and that's without involving the ATX supplies.
03:52 egrsteve nice
03:52 Monkeh|Lap Wall warts man
03:52 egrsteve the HV input is rated 100-240V
03:52 Monkeh|Lap I've got loads.
03:52 Monkeh|Lap That's not HV you barbarian. :P
03:53 egrsteve with a std cord cord type connector
03:53 Monkeh|Lap You need to add a couple of zeros
03:53 egrsteve anything over 30 (or is it 40) is HV
03:53 Monkeh|Lap Pffft, no
03:53 egrsteve I know it's not
03:53 egrsteve but compared to 12V in
03:53 egrsteve it's the "higher" voltage in
03:54 Monkeh|Lap It's LV vs ELV
03:54 Monkeh|Lap And I consider 1000V and up medium voltage
03:54 Monkeh|Lap It's high when you're dealing with 10kV. :P
03:54 egrsteve nice
03:55 egrsteve either way with the right cord it can be concidered universal power compatible
03:55 Monkeh|Lap Yep
03:55 Monkeh|Lap Just have to change the plug on the supplied one
03:55 Monkeh|Lap IF I decide to trust their AC input
03:56 egrsteve it works at 120
03:56 epictang0 w00t...MOTU has awesome customer service
03:56 Monkeh|Lap egrsteve: 240 changes things a bit.
03:56 egrsteve I assume it's a smPSU
03:56 egrsteve it only double
03:57 Monkeh|Lap Is it noticably heavy?
03:57 epictang0 they are going to repair my mk3 even though the repair ticket was submitted over a year ago...lmao
03:57 egrsteve no, really light
03:58 egrsteve Weight: 215 gram
03:58 Monkeh|Lap SMPSU then.
03:58 Monkeh|Lap I've got weeny toy isolating transformers which weigh more than that and they won't give you 400mA.
03:59 egrsteve SMPSU shouldn't care about input voltage as long as the caps and diodes can take it
04:00 Monkeh|Lap Well
04:00 Monkeh|Lap That was a spectacular mindfuck of a book in places.
04:00 Monkeh|Lap I enjoyed that.
04:01 epictang0 Monkeh|Lap: what book?
04:01 Monkeh|Lap epictang0: Chasm City

11:24 Electricguy you would be dead if you did that
11:25 Sgt_Lemming HighMan, 1 teaspoon of pure caffeine would probably kill you
11:25 Sgt_Lemming the LD50 for caffeine is 150mG/Kg and a teaspoon full of it would be a few grams at least
11:27 Nazca I was actually looking for the LD50, but they don't tend to publish them for human metabolisms
11:27 Nazca not easily googlable anyway
11:28 Nazca wiki reports LD50 via oral uptake is 192mg/Kg in rats and around 150-200mg/Kg in humans, which sounds right
11:29 Sgt_Lemming 150mg/Kg is what I have always seen quoted for it
11:29 Nazca the usual adjustments apply for "alternative" uptake methods :p
11:29 Sgt_Lemming but it is dependent on a lot of things because of the mechanism of action, and also how good the human body is at getting rid of it
11:31 Nazca yeah, LD50 is more of a "if you need to ask you're probably taking too much" than a scientifically safe measure
11:31 * Sgt_Lemming nods
11:31 Sgt_Lemming at the very least he is gonna end up with one hell of a caffeine withdrawl headache
11:31 Sgt_Lemming and he's gonna wish he was dead
11:32 Nazca oh yeah, and not sleeping for quite a few hours
11:32 Sgt_Lemming actually, that's a myth
11:32 Sgt_Lemming caffeine doesn't keep you awake, it just prevents you from feeling tireder than you already do
11:33 Nazca well yes, but it can help a bit
11:34 Nazca it's a psychological stimulant rather than physical
11:35 exor674 joined #thegeekgroup
11:36 Nazca caffeine is like a drill officer ... you can fall asleep with it yelling at you, but it's not nearly so easy :p
11:41 Nazca ah, wikipedia, you tell me such amusing things
11:41 Nazca "coffee was banned in Sweden in the years 1756-1769, 1794–1796, 1799–1802, and 1817-1823."
11:41 Nazca damn Swedes just couldn't make their minds up
11:43 Sgt_Lemming king edward (I think) banned coffee in the UK, but there was such a back lash that the ban was repealed almost immediately
11:44 Nazca it says Charles II tried and failed lol
11:45 Nazca though given we had legal opiate dens in this country for long enough I do wonder what went through their heads

12:26 Seroster aye
12:26 Seroster "we'
12:26 Seroster ve got a lot of callers atm well get to you asap"
12:27 angy please wait for two to five eternity, your call is important for us
12:51 Nazca urg, that really bugs me
12:52 Nazca I had to call through to a support line last night that played "thank you for holding, you are now position 1 in the queue" _literally_ every 10-20 seconds
12:53 Experimentonomen *BOOM**BOOM**BOOM**BOOM*
12:54 angy the worst I had was a loop saying ``hello <compagny name''
12:54 angy so the same same every 3 seconds
12:55 Nazca it was also exceedingly annoying for me, as someone that doesn't deal with broadband inquiries much, having to navigate Talktalk business's call tree
12:56 Nazca "Do you want to talk to support or provisioning?" support... "Press 1 for ADSL inquiries, press 2 for VPN inquiries" ... wtf, I want to talk about EFM, where's the EFM option bitch?
12:57 Experimentonomen hm one of my subs is creaking in its joints, making it sound like the amp is oscillating :/
12:57 Nazca EFM, like other dedicated point to point links, is apparently VPN... yay for hijacked terminology ¬_¬
12:58 angy I would have put it with ADSL more than VPN
12:58 NeWtoz someone needs a hug
12:58 Nazca yea, that's what I thought, but he seemed a little lost so I double checked the second time round
12:58 * Experimentonomen thinks about doubling the amount of output transistors in this large subamp from 5 pairs to 10 pairs
12:59 Nazca VPN subdivides in to PSTN and the various leased line versions
12:59 angy they don't make any sense with that classification!
13:00 Nazca it's TalkTalk business of course they don't make sense :p
13:00 angy =)
13:01 Nazca it took them 10 hours to fix an issue on a line with a 6 hour SLA... because the actual fault was with a 10gig line card they had actually diagnosed the night before but decided was "just fine for 24 hours" cause they couldn't "see any issues relating to it"
13:02 angy non-redundant line cards are a fault in itself
13:04 Nazca yes and no... any sort of SPoF in a system is a fault, but that doesn't imply redundancy on a the line... redundant paths without redundancy in each path is acceptable
13:04 angy it depend on how you design your network
13:04 angy for me, it's no acceptable, for others it is
13:05 Nazca yeah, it depends on topology, target latency, target capacity and what your actual use case is
13:05 angy exactly
13:06 Nazca if you have 3 or 4 alternate paths in with slightly higher latency, or load shared between divergent paths, losing a path isn't quite so service disrupting
13:08 angy it also depend a lot on your equipment provider
13:08 Nazca true and if a dead card takes out the whole chassis or the supervisor you're probably buggered anyway
13:09 Nazca the network team at work have decided to try and make me less of a noob on large scale networking, so I get to learn about the fun world of BGP and ISIS and MPLS and VRFs
13:09 angy it's not unusual for us to have line cards going bad and crashing the fabric
13:10 angy I so hate ISIS
13:11 Nazca ixgbe has a nasty bug in it that muck up a lot of routers
13:11 angy we use OSPF
13:12 Nazca ISIS is ... an abstraction ... one I'm fairly familiar with from pathfinding logic
13:12 Nazca same basic goal though, right?
13:12 angy exactly
13:13 angy different implementation and different layer on the OSI model
13:14 Experimentonomen there we go, 5 more pairs of MJW21195/96 ordered from onsemi
13:15 angy if you use route reflectors, it's better to go OSPF, else it depend on how your network is designed, but for ISP-like it's more often better to go IS-IS
13:15 angy and as far as BGP is involved, it's impossible to understand so it's very fun
13:16 Nazca from a quick skim, I'd guess the difference comes down to topology... OSPF works better with fewer high capacity links and ISIS works better with the capacity spread out across multiple routes
13:16 angy yep, it's a way to see it
13:16 angy it depend on the concentration of your core network
13:20 Nazca yea... our networks fairly spread out so route reconvergence was a pain... I think we used OSPF at one point
13:20 angy with no rf, on cis*o, you're going to have 100% cpu for OSPF process
13:22 Nazca then it goes "ah, you lost a port, please hold on for 5 minutes while we recalculate 100,000 routes for you"
13:23 Nazca (probably an exaggeration, but it sounds funny lol)
13:23 angy if you have any confederation, it became a nightmare to calculate
13:23 angy I think the rf reflect close to that number on our network tbh
13:24 Nazca hmmm, confederation... I know that word but only in political context
13:24 angy bgp confederation, a very nifty and nice tool made for people to kill themselves
13:26 Nazca sounds it
13:27 angy bgp is so funny when it breaks and no one is able to understand why
13:28 angy then just unplug/plug the reflectors and it all starts up again
13:29 Nazca the windows approach to debugging then?
13:30 angy our approch to fix it is first to try shut/noshut the TenGigabitEthernet connexion with the reflectors
13:30 angy then, if still broken, use a brain and slam it onto the supervisor

14:28 Sgt_Lemming yes, that's called windchill'
14:28 Electricguy you don't say? O_O
14:28 Sgt_Lemming having a shielded and unshielded sensor would allow you to calculate the windchill
14:29 Electricguy yeah
14:29 Electricguy i think i'll build one of these things you find on weather stations. like a bunch of stacked saucers
14:29 Electricguy with the temp sensor in the middle
14:30 Electricguy that thing to the left http://www.myknownbuzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Weather-station-3.jpg
14:30 Electricguy i wonder how i can build one really cheap though
14:30 Electricguy i need a bunch of shallow cones...
14:31 Sgt_Lemming it's just a wind guard
14:31 Sgt_Lemming allows air to get to the sensor, but wind flows around it
14:31 Electricguy yeah that's pretty much what i want
14:32 Sgt_Lemming another way to do it is a box with two pipes in from the bottom
14:32 Electricguy so one pipe is in and one is out?
14:32 Electricguy but then it becomes directional..
14:33 Sgt_Lemming no, the two pipes are inside the box, they vent through the bottom of the case
14:33 Sgt_Lemming the wind can't force it's way into the box because of the path

14:45 Electricguy some plastic thing would be nice
14:45 Electricguy or even wood
14:45 Isopropyl|Kindle encase it in lucite
14:46 Electricguy that only slows down the value change time of the sensor
14:46 Isopropyl|Kindle shits indestructable once it sets
14:47 Sgt_Lemming yes, the problem is it's also a pretty effective insulator

17:30 Seroster SparkyProjects, What'll happen if I have too much capacitance for my coil? Simply less sparks?

18:05 angy lovely islander!
18:05 angy morning!
18:05 tlockley oh, no not yet. There have been events that are getting in the way.
18:05 tlockley hey angy
18:05 tonsofpcs first set of ASCII Art came through, second didn't.  Are you connecting analog or digital between the snake and the amps?  How are they mounted physically?  Do you have noise if you shut the board off?  Do you have noise if you just amplify the analog outs of the board [sony minidisc recorders are great headphone amps]?  Do you have noise if you remove all physical input wiring from the board?
18:11 tlockley The snakes are analog in/out, they only use didgital to communicate between eachother. All the rack equipment is installed in an old steel rack and the rack chasis is not grounded. All the equipment relies on cord ground (no chasis ground on anything). Some but not as loud as with a board connected. There is noise just from the analog out of the board when at 0db. I do not recall, I will have to check
18:13 Chipguy joined #thegeekgroup
18:15 SparkyProjects In my experience, you would normally ground the main amplifier audio ground, anything external would only have audio ground
18:15 SparkyProjects Or with something like a metal turntable, the metal would be mains ground, the audio ground would be isolated from mains ground, but connected to the amp
18:18 tonsofpcs try grounding the rack.
18:18 tlockley should the external grounds of the power conditioners also be on that same ground?
18:19 tonsofpcs ground should be ground should be ground should be starred
18:20 tlockley ok, I will try that next
18:20 SparkyProjects You basically wat a 'star' of audio grounds coming back to one point
18:20 SparkyProjects Though you need to make any external metal cases safe by grounding to mains.
18:20 SparkyProjects And not connect that chassis to audio gnd
18:21 Seroster hey SparkyProjects.... My "bucket" can fit 20 bottles xD
18:21 SparkyProjects so yeah, ground the rack and anything in it, but only connect the amplifier audio ground to mains grouns
18:22 SparkyProjects That's good Seroster :)
18:22 tlockley I will work on it

18:29 SparkyProjects tlockley, hiss can come from various sources, bad components, bad connections on wiring, or interference from external sources (picking up radio etc)
18:29 SparkyProjects Carbon resistors apparently can introduce hiss, so when we built a mixer we used metal oxide resistors.
18:30 tlockley I suspect highly its the space as it is very old and not really condusive to repair and maintinance. Being that the entire building is amde of reinforced concrete

19:48 Electricguy how do i run a program in putty? (running it from putty itself)

19:50 Electricguy hmmm ok
19:50 Electricguy but programs can run in it..
19:50 Electricguy what want to do is to use putty as a duplex serial terminal and run irssi in it

19:53 ajcc do you want to use putty as a serial terminal or have irssi output it's screen to a serial port?
19:53 Electricguy i want it to output it's screen on the COM port and be controlled via the COM port

20:00 Electricguy ajcc, ahh! going to look more into that
20:12 ajcc Electricguy: hey, you can use screen directly on a serial port :)
20:12 Electricguy ?? how?
20:14 ajcc screen /dev/ttyS0 9600, for COM1 and 9600 baud, ttyS1 is COM2.
20:15 ajcc that will start a new session on the serial port
20:15 ajcc so if you hook up your DOS compy to that port, you'll get the command line
20:15 Electricguy and where do i type that?
20:15 Electricguy those commands look very unfamiliar
20:16 ajcc oh, that goes in Cygwin's terminal.
20:17 Electricguy ahh
20:20 Electricguy then i have to figure out how to run irssi from cygwin..
20:20 KB3NZQ joined #thegeekgroup
20:21 ajcc so I'll recap a bit :), Irssi in Windows runs in Cygwin. Cygwin is a "Unix"-layer for Windows, it let's you run and use Unix software in Windows. Screen is a program for handling terminal "sessions", in Unix the promts are temrinal sessions (it used to be typewriters and dumb terminals hooked up to a massive computer), screen lets you view the same session on multiple terminals: i.e. your DOS computer hooked up to the COM-port and a window i
20:21 Electricguy okey
20:22 ajcc To run Irssi in the real Cygwin, you'll have to install it via it's package or application picker or isntaller (can't remember what they call it). Then start it from the terminal by typing in irssi.
20:22 Electricguy but i have to run cygwin first to set up the serial comm and then run irssi in cygwin, right?
20:22 ajcc yep
20:22 Electricguy ok
20:23 ajcc hm, now it get's very confusing
20:25 Electricguy a little, yes
20:27 ajcc we are running irssi inside screen so that we will be able to see and talk into that terminal or session from another copy of screen.
20:28 ajcc Unix is a bit stupid in that only one thing can read anything at any single time (unless there's something attached to it which you can talk to).
20:29 ajcc we can talk to screen, from another screen. and we need another screen to output a terminal on the serial-port, which your DOS compy can talk to. Ok?
20:30 Electricguy so i need one screen running irssi, then another one piped to the one running IRC that shovels it out on the COM port?
20:30 ajcc that's right
20:30 Electricguy mkay
20:30 Electricguy hmm
20:31 Electricguy would have been so much easier if i got the orinico gold card to work in dOS instead.. lol
20:31 ajcc haha, well, you didn't have to learn Cygwin and how to use screen first before then.
20:32 Electricguy lol rtue
20:32 Electricguy true*
20:34 ajcc if you only want irssi on the DOS compy, you don't have to run another screen to peek into the other session (actually screen starts a terminal session, screen also let's you use that session, but you can close screen completely and the session will still run...)
20:34 Electricguy now lets keep it somewhat simple... XD
20:34 ajcc :)
20:34 ajcc it's a bit confusing I know
20:35 ajcc anyway, you can use TCP over a serial link too, and run something like IRCjr on the DOS compy
20:35 ajcc SLIP
20:35 Electricguy mkay
20:36 Electricguy yeah i already got IRCjr on it.. :P

21:00 ajcc Electricguy: my brain is melting trying to decode Windows wizards. I've found out this: I Windows Xp you can share your Internet Connection (with Internet Connection Sharing, ICS). And, if it's possible to set up a SLIP or PPP connection, you might be able to share your Internetz with that. But I've very uncertain if Google just links me to it because you can share your modem over ethernet or if it also works the other way around.
21:01 ajcc hm, you can see how badly my brain is melting by the amount of misspelling
21:02 ajcc it's like reading the IKEA manuals without the pictures :P
21:02 astro73|alice sharing to a serial connection?
21:03 ajcc yes, Electricguy and me is one of three guys who want to do such a thing
21:04 astro73|alice last time i shared a connection, i think I right-clicked and there was an option to share it

21:19 masterofmonks Seroster, Good guess.
21:19 masterofmonks And you are approximately correct.
21:24 Gaxnys Seroster: That was before the update though.
21:25 Seroster Thought it might be fun to get into some redstone logic.
21:30 astro73|alice Seroster: old version. new height limit is 256, isn't it? not 128
21:30 Seroster Idk.
21:30 astro73|alice of course, my tekkit server still has the old height limit
21:30 maglinvinn no
21:31 maglinvinn he made it to 512 sky limit

21:37 maglinvinn ah
21:37 maglinvinn i was going to say that google heads up display glasses are nothing new
21:38 maglinvinn the same tech is used in massive warehouses and shipping distribution centers
21:38 maglinvinn they literally overlay the envirmoment with a virtual reality 'line' that tells you were to go and will point to the box in question when you get there.
21:38 GGR It must have just came through on one of our news partner sites.
21:38 maglinvinn its VERY cool stuff
21:38 maglinvinn it was definately mitchel narrating the news article.
21:39 GGR Yes, that is Mitchell on-the-air.
21:39 tlockley we should do something similar as a self guided tour of the lab
21:39 maglinvinn *nods*
21:39 maglinvinn i agree!
21:39 tlockley and have location specific embeded video
21:40 maglinvinn how handy would it be to have 'visitor glasses' that could notify visitors of active shoots, no noise zones, even give dynamic information based on where they were
21:40 GGR Programming ideas can be submitted to TGG-ZozoAFK
21:40 GGR ...or william.jones@thegeekgroup.org
21:40 tlockley it would be worth its weight in gold

21:44 tlockley though what would be a good location sensing solution?
21:45 maglinvinn RFID.
21:45 maglinvinn there'll be RFID on all hte doors anways
21:46 tlockley but wont most of the doors be recieve only? Or are you imagining a goggles/card combo and keep track of that relationship?

21:49 tlockley huh
21:49 tlockley that would be pretty simple i guess
21:50 tlockley so most of the location logic is done by the visitor
