01:20 SparkyProjects You wouldn't be able to make a toroid with an overall diameter of 6 inches with 8 inch ducting
01:20 SparkyProjects But you can if you use vacuum cleaner hose
01:20 epictang0 eadthem_server: i know the feeling...i cant get by without at least 2 monitors...
01:20 epictang0 i feel like i lose a limb when i go mobile
01:21 eadthem_server at least is a good way of putting it

02:09 eadthem_server this is intresting  it has metric wire
02:09 eadthem_server 1.6mm
02:10 * masterofmonks pours an egg batter over Toastdude and then fries him.
02:10 Toastdude Oooo!
02:10 masterofmonks Using the powers of Spatula and Frying Pan I have created French_Toastsude
02:11 Monkeh|Lap eadthem_server: Err.. 1.6mm diameter?
02:11 Cheezmo don't forget the maple syrup and icing sugar
02:11 Monkeh|Lap Because 1.6mm2 is not a normal size.
02:12 French_Toastdude Bonjour!
02:12 eadthem_server 1.5mm^2
02:12 Monkeh|Lap eadthem_server: Yeah, that's a normal wire size everywhere except the states.
02:12 Monkeh|Lap eadthem_server: Freud are Italian.
02:12 * Cheezmo installs Adobe Acrobat X Pro 10.1.2
02:13 eadthem_server made in spain
02:13 Monkeh|Lap Is that the supply cable or internal?
02:13 eadthem_server internal   spain is the whole router
02:14 Monkeh|Lap Wow, that's.. big.
02:14 Monkeh|Lap I wouldn't expect that inside the unit.
02:14 eadthem_server 15 amp router  10000-22000 rpm
02:15 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, I wouldn't expect 1.5mm2 inside for that.
02:15 Monkeh|Lap (wish you yanks would get out of the habit of rating things in amps. :P)
02:15 eadthem_server we dont
02:16 Monkeh|Lap So what is it in watts?
02:16 eadthem_server we rate them in AWG  AMPS at degree C wire
02:16 Monkeh|Lap ...
02:16 eadthem_server 15A at 120V if you want
02:16 Monkeh|Lap Which is 1800W, thank you.
02:17 Monkeh|Lap See, that's 7.5A or 16A for me, depending on how I choose to supply it.
02:18 Monkeh|Lap (obviously it's a different motor for 240V, but it's rated for the same power)
02:21 tonsofpcs define 'normal'
02:21 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Normal what?
02:21 tonsofpcs i can get sqmm wire sizes with lszh rating if i want...
02:22 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Yes, but 1.6mm2 is not a normal size.
02:26 hopstafarian joined #thegeekgroup
02:27 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: but the current draw is what we care about when supplying power....
02:27 tonsofpcs power usage is secondary
02:28 Monkeh|Lap And '15 amps' is entirely uninformative without specifying the voltage.
02:28 hopstafarian evening everyone..can anyone tell me the correct way to wire balanced audio cable from a stereo trs 3.5mm to a mono rca?
02:28 lwq_laptop ugh. i want to go hunting
02:28 lwq_laptop OH. SPRING TURKEY IS ALMOST HERE
02:32 Monkeh|Lap hopstafarian: You.. don't generally use RCA for balanced audio.
02:34 hopstafarian Monkeh, i know, but this is for a pa system, and that's my input option (actually, there ARE terminals, but i still don't think it supports stereo)
02:35 hopstafarian Monkeh, do i just double up the tip and ring leads?
02:37 Monkeh|Lap ... Is it balanced or not?
02:37 hopstafarian the cable is...
02:37 Monkeh|Lap .. The cable doesn't make it balanced..

02:43 lwq_laptop lol
02:44 hopstafarian i have several hundred feet of balanced audio cable...the output is a laptop playing music, and the current (meaning 'existing') input is a single rca going into a pa amp...
02:45 Monkeh|Lap You have several hundred feet of audio cable. It is not balanced, it is simply twisted-pair shielded cable.
02:45 hopstafarian there is a phone line spliced into a separate input channel for intercom functionality
02:45 tonsofpcs what amp?
02:45 hopstafarian Monkeh, ok, sure
02:45 tonsofpcs does the amp have a balanced input?
02:45 Monkeh|Lap Please don't confuse two conductors as stereo with balanced, they're very different things.
02:45 Monkeh|Lap Interchanging them just leads to confusion..
02:46 hopstafarian i'd have to look at the manual, and recently someone spliced a digital circuit that record the intercom input, and loops it back a couple of times ...presumably, this doesnt change the balancing...one sec
02:47 tonsofpcs do you know the manual?
02:47 tonsofpcs err, model name/number?
02:49 hopstafarian looking at the manual, but not sure how to tell if it is balanced (though it does use a grounded ac plug)...bogen tpu-100b...only a mono input for the music...
02:49 tonsofpcs hmm
02:50 hopstafarian can i paste a link to the manual here?
02:50 lwq_laptop my trigger finger is getting itchy. i think i need to go shoot my gun this week end
02:50 eadthem_server cya
02:50 eadthem_server done installing
02:50 Monkeh|Lap hopstafarian: Using a grounded plug has little to do with being balanced..
02:51 hopstafarian Monkeh, didn't think so, but thought i'd give more info than leave something crucial out...
02:51 hopstafarian i'm just a dumb computer guy...this is out of my purview (obviously)
02:51 tonsofpcs hopstafarian: yea paste link
02:52 hopstafarian http://www.bogen.com/products/pdfs/telephonepagepdfs/TPU35BmO.pdf
02:53 tonsofpcs it's got a balanced mic level input but that's silly
02:53 tonsofpcs how far exactly are you running it?
02:53 tonsofpcs 100 ft? 500 ft? 1000 ft?
02:54 wannabe1987 http://news.yahoo.com/canada-s-newest-coin-glows-in-the-dark.html  what would happen if we shrunk it?
02:54 BotSteve Title: Canada's newest coin glows in the dark - Yahoo! News
02:54 hopstafarian i have three locations to repeat this setup in, and i would guesstimate my longest run to be 200' and my shortest 75 +/-
02:54 tonsofpcs omg, it has an aural exciter in it lol
02:55 hopstafarian tonsofpcs, yeah, we don't use it...family store...
02:56 tonsofpcs wait, are you running from one output to three amps or 3 sets of [computer --> amp] ?
02:56 hopstafarian one output to one amp...but in 3 geographically separate locations..
02:56 tonsofpcs ok
02:57 tonsofpcs so you probably don't need balanced wiring, you're running at line level, just use good quality shielded cable.
02:58 tonsofpcs also, if you're running music (especially that which is mp3 compressed), you probably want to switch on the aural exciter.
02:58 hopstafarian ok..but it won't hurt to use the balanced? as long as the shielding is good?...so just a pretty standard connection then..
02:58 tonsofpcs and since the amp has no balanced input and your computer has no balanced output, you would have to get a transformer on each end to make it a balanced run
02:59 Monkeh|Lap Again, the cable isn't balanced, the _signal_ is balanced.
02:59 OldTubeRadio joined #thegeekgroup
03:00 hopstafarian ok...so i don't really need the balanced part so much, but solid shielding and maybe a direct box somewhere in the run?
03:00 tonsofpcs why the heck would you need a direct box?
03:00 OldTubeRadio Good Evening
03:00 wannabe1987 hi
03:00 tonsofpcs you're going from an unbalanced higher-than-line-level-capable output to an unbalanced consumer line-level input...
03:00 OldTubeRadio wax on
03:00 tonsofpcs B+ on?
03:01 hopstafarian tonsofpcs, idk (see above, re dumb computer guy)...just to help overcome the signal to noise loss over such a long run?
03:02 Monkeh|Lap That's what larger copper is for.
03:02 tonsofpcs you probably won't have much loss
03:02 tonsofpcs it's a "Hi Z" (high impedance) input being driven by an opamp capable of line level output...
03:03 tonsofpcs just use a good cable w/ a good shield.
03:03 wannabe1987 "soon i'm gonna be a jedi"
03:04 hopstafarian oh ok...so as long as i don't zip-tie it to a junction box with every circuit in the store running through it, i should be good?
03:04 tonsofpcs it'd probably be good there too.
03:04 tonsofpcs as long as you don't have it wrapped around a vacuum cleaner [or other motor load] you should be fine.
03:05 hopstafarian cool....well thanks for the help...i'm a worry first, and not be surprised later kinda guy, in case you hadn't noticed...
03:05 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: I should introduce you to the audio hell that is the ring final some time.
03:05 tonsofpcs if you have an issue, we can work to mitigate it by adding a transformer or two, but i'd try it with good quality cable direct connected first
03:05 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: you have a pre-built ground loop, don't you.....
03:06 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: We have a pre-built 50Hz antenna.
03:06 tonsofpcs eh, we have 60Hz antennas here too.
03:06 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: A multimeter will pick that up just sitting on a table with no leads.
03:06 hopstafarian awesome...thanks you both...i knew this was the right place to ask...
03:06 tonsofpcs interesting
03:06 Monkeh|Lap Yes, but they don't intentionally take a complete loop aorund the building.
03:06 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: well.... depends who 'they' is
03:06 Monkeh|Lap Radials don't by definition.
03:07 hopstafarian one last question...how do i keep out the alien mind-rays...just your standard tinfoil?
03:07 tonsofpcs nah, high-grade
03:07 Monkeh|Lap Faraday suit
03:07 tonsofpcs and make sure it's grounded.
03:08 hopstafarian lol...thanks, i needed that...well.. thanks again...but gotta go, too many deadlines, too few ppl to pawn them off on...
03:09 hopstafarian have a good evening...
03:11 tonsofpcs for an install like that, I'd recommend a HPF before recommending all the balancing gear anyway....
03:11 tonsofpcs (r a 'hum eliminator')
03:12 Monkeh|Lap That reminds me, I need to go crawling
03:12 Monkeh|Lap I have a lack of volume and some intermittent interference on the right channel from my gaming box and it's very annoying.
03:14 tonsofpcs *or
03:14 tonsofpcs loose connector?
03:14 Monkeh|Lap That's my guess
03:14 tonsofpcs [or conductor in a connector
03:14 tonsofpcs ]
03:15 Monkeh|Lap It's twin RCA to a 6.35, so I'm guessing the right RCA is loose.
03:15 tonsofpcs 6.35? is that 1/4"?
03:15 Monkeh|Lap Better not be a conductor because it took work to actually find that cable
03:15 Monkeh|Lap Yes
03:15 Monkeh|Lap Is your math as rusty as wannabe's? :P
03:16 tonsofpcs [don't ask me why, but we call "mini phone" connectors 3.5mm but "phone" connectors 1/4"...]
03:16 tonsofpcs .c 6.35mm to in
03:16 BotSteve 0.25 in
03:16 wannabe1987 wannabe hates math.
03:16 Monkeh|Lap Because the mini was designed in metric as 3.5mm
03:16 Monkeh|Lap The original was 1/4"
03:16 tonsofpcs and bantam TT? ;)
03:17 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: No idea, never seen one in the wild.
03:17 tonsofpcs really? want one mailed?
03:18 Monkeh|Lap Sounds like a nice compromise
03:18 Monkeh|Lap Nah
03:18 Monkeh|Lap 6.35's bulky but holds, 3.5 is just horrific
03:18 Monkeh|Lap Falls out if you look at it funny
03:18 Monkeh|Lap Don't get me started on 2.5.
03:18 tonsofpcs 2.5?
03:18 tonsofpcs darn, beat me to it
03:18 tonsofpcs ;)
03:18 Monkeh|Lap Although they've actually got better with 2.5 lately.
03:18 tonsofpcs how bout 3.5 with 5 conductors?
03:18 Monkeh|Lap But that's probably because everyone and their dog has one on an MP3 player
03:19 Monkeh|Lap So they finally started making them actually grip somewhat
03:19 Monkeh|Lap My phone's more sensible and has a 3.5.
03:19 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Seen one or two of those, never for audio.
03:19 Monkeh|Lap Seen them used for various sorts of analog and digital signalling as well as power supplies..

03:21 Monkeh|Lap Eeeww
03:21 Monkeh|Lap That connector sucks for non-critical stuff
03:21 Monkeh|Lap There are plenty of good, multi-pin connectors which can actually be SECURED
03:21 Monkeh|Lap Why would they use THAT?
03:22 tonsofpcs also, wtf is the point of my tablet having a microhdmi connector on it?  the microhdmi connector is just as tall as an HDMI [if not taller]....
03:22 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: It's not.
03:22 epictang0 Monkeh|Lap: or they can use fiber for 10Gbit...ya know...like one is supposed to...
03:23 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: what's not?
03:23 Monkeh|Lap MicroHDMI
03:23 Monkeh|Lap It's 2mm lower and 3.5mm narrower.
03:23 Monkeh|Lap Wait, that's mini
03:23 tonsofpcs err, micro v. mini I mean
03:24 Monkeh|Lap Micro is slightly taller than mini but not nearly as wide.
03:24 tonsofpcs and narrower is irrelevant in something that's 8x10"...
03:24 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, but it's the New Standard, obviously.
03:24 Monkeh|Lap Matters on phones.
03:24 tonsofpcs really? because even ratshack doesn't keep them with HDMI cables....
03:24 Monkeh|Lap ... phones use the USB port for everything
03:24 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: It's new!
03:24 tonsofpcs they keep them with cellphones
03:25 tonsofpcs because there's no reasonable use for them on anything else.
03:25 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: My phone can do HDMI via the USB port..
03:25 tonsofpcs i guess i can't complain, at least they aren't using a resistor tied to one pin to change the microHDMI port into an analog output
03:26 Monkeh|Lap As for ratshack, blah, that place sucks so much

03:34 egrsteve hmm, sorry if it was a TI I might have been able to help
03:34 Cheezmo yeah, TIs are great
03:35 egrsteve TIs are great but overpriced and underpowered in all honesty
03:35 Cheezmo also, tonsofpcs: it has to be exactly "EL-531H" and old as shit
03:35 Cheezmo I should overclock my TI-83p one day

03:39 Cheezmo Might be a last resort, but I don't have the calc at hand :x
03:39 Cheezmo my instructor still has it with her
03:39 Cheezmo at her house an hour away in another town
03:39 Cheezmo lol
03:39 tonsofpcs also, just because the calculator isn't exactly the same doesn't mean the procedure isn't the same/similar
03:40 Cheezmo trying to decypher it to something that old is being a pain though, but I have ideas
03:40 Cheezmo looks like something with the TAB
03:40 Cheezmo like hitting [2nd] [TAB] [#] to set sigs
03:41 Cheezmo ho wells, I'll try it tomorrow
03:42 Cheezmo I need to go find myself a TI base model scientific calc for our exam...
03:43 Cheezmo all I have is my 83p and we're not allowed programmable calcs on the exams :I

12:34 Sasha_ Yo guys, could you help me figure out this board? To me, it looks like the top half is the antenna, but there is no wireless control. Plus, the whole thing is supposed to manage 150w at 24v: http://imgur.com/download/Nknd8
12:34 Sgt_Lemming I mean for breadboard mess
12:34 Sgt_Lemming the pads on the side are clearly antennae
12:34 Sgt_Lemming there is a wireless module to the left of it
12:34 Sgt_Lemming what's puzzling you about it sasha?
12:34 Monkeh Time to see if I've got a less sucky LED
12:35 Sasha_ Well, the fact that there isn't a wireless module - or at least there isn't supposed to be
12:37 Sgt_Lemming Sasha_, the module to the left of the antenna marked "RP-M100A" is clearly some form of RF comms module
12:37 Sgt_Lemming and google backs that up
12:37 Sgt_Lemming http://www.firmtech.co.kr/02download/zigbee/manual/RP-M1XX%20Datasheet_V12.pdf
12:37 Sasha_ Well it is really weird - there isn't supposed to be one
12:37 Sgt_Lemming hah, it's a zigbee module
12:37 Sgt_Lemming got a link to the product?

12:41 Sasha_ It is supposed to be a high bay LED that replaces HPS or metal halide lamps in factories and warehouses. But we think it is shit.
12:41 Monkeh Hmm, that's a pain.
12:41 Sgt_Lemming it looks decently built in the pics
12:41 Sgt_Lemming and the LED's are connected to nice big ground planes for heat dissipation

12:42 Sgt_Lemming that link 404's as well, but if I remove the path after the IP it tries to load mypg.co.kr....
12:43 Sasha_ Dude, I dunno, but it works for me
12:43 Sgt_Lemming that is a LOT of structure for that light
12:43 Thermoelectric Works for me too.
12:43 Sgt_Lemming yeah, pretty sure the problem is my end
12:43 Sgt_Lemming just not sure wtf is going on
12:43 Sasha_ Yup, it is water cooled.
12:44 Sasha_ But have a look on the 2 transistors, the middle pin is cut off for some reason
12:44 Thermoelectric They use the back of it.
12:44 Sasha_ What do you mean?
12:44 Sgt_Lemming they are DPAK or D2PAK, that's absolutely 100% normal
12:44 Sgt_Lemming you know how with large mosfets and transistors they have a metal tab on the casing?
12:44 Thermoelectric The big metal surface on the back of it is connected to the middle pin, so it's easier to use the back of it.
12:45 Sgt_Lemming the actual silicon of the transistor is mounted to that metal as well, so it provides a direct thermal path to the board
12:45 Monkeh Like on a TO220 where the tab is connected to the middle pin (typically), the middle pin is connected to the larger contact area on those packages
12:45 * Sgt_Lemming nods
12:45 Monkeh So you don't need to solder a heatsink contact and the middle pin
12:45 Sasha_ Oh. BTW, another issue that I've encountered that this whole giant thing relies on 3 screws to hold it up in the air...
12:45 Monkeh One does both.
12:46 Sgt_Lemming how big are the screws Sasha_?
12:46 Sgt_Lemming if they are big enough, that's not really an issue
12:46 Sasha_ Like the size of my nail in length, and typical HDD screw size in width
12:46 Sgt_Lemming Sasha_ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D2PAK <--- D2PAK transistors
12:46 BotSteve Title: D2PAK - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
12:47 Sgt_Lemming note the middle pin
12:47 Sasha_ Plus they're hooked up to a really dodgy looking 'made in china' box, which acts as a junction box AND the thing that holds it up
12:47 Sgt_Lemming yeah, the junction box should not be a structural element
12:48 Sgt_Lemming that big eye bolt doesn't go through into the casing?
12:48 Sasha_ Nope. It is stuck onto the grey box.
12:48 Sgt_Lemming yeah, that's pretty bodge
12:48 Sgt_Lemming looking at how it
12:48 Sgt_Lemming 's assembled
12:49 Sasha_ And the grey box is held onto the whole thing with 3 screws going through a paper thin metal top
12:49 Sgt_Lemming the 4 screws on the top go into those massive standoffs
12:49 Sasha_ Yup, but the screws aren't too big either
12:49 Sgt_Lemming it looks a bit like that was done as an afterthought

12:50 Sasha_ Nah, the thing is, my dad was going to give this as a sample to a big company, but now, after my careful analysis, he won't :P
12:50 Sasha_ Plus, it costs 800$ whilst a metal halide lamp that only uses 50 extra watts fort he same amout of light costs 50$
12:51 * Sgt_Lemming nods
12:51 Thermoelectric Though halides to start to lose their light output as they age...
12:51 Sgt_Lemming the new site we are looking at I'd like to do all LED lighting, but that might have to wait for a sizable grant
12:51 Sasha_ But anyways, can you guys tell me anything more about the pcb? Especially the wireless module, because it isn't supposed to be there.
12:51 Sgt_Lemming so do LED's Thermoelectric
12:52 Sgt_Lemming it's a zigbee wireless module Sasha_, I linked the datasheet before
12:52 Thermoelectric Learn something new every day, Lemming...
12:52 Sasha_ ^ it is still loading :P
12:52 Sgt_Lemming not sure if the big antenna board is hooked to it, because it's apparently supposed to have it's own antenna
12:52 Sgt_Lemming http://www.firmtech.co.kr/02download/zigbee/manual/RP-M1XX%20Datasheet_V12.pdf <--- datasheet
12:53 Sasha_ ok, i got it now :D
12:53 Thermoelectric What frequency do those zigbee boards use?
12:53 Sasha_ No clue. I didn't know about this before I came here. Any idea how this can be used to control the LED?
12:53 Sgt_Lemming they can use a range of frequencies
12:54 Sgt_Lemming 415MHz, 900MHz, 1.3GHz, 2.4GHz
12:54 Thermoelectric Well, those antennas don't look anything like the 2.4GHz antennas I've seen etched, so I'm guessing it's one of the others?
12:54 Sgt_Lemming sorry, 433MHz, not 415MHz
12:54 Thermoelectric Could be used for dimming, Sasha_?
12:55 Sasha_ Hmm… but how would one go about to figure out the protocol used?
12:55 Sgt_Lemming yeah, probably used for a remote control system, and it's cheaper for them to make just one light, and then sell you the dimmer module seperately
12:55 Sgt_Lemming Sasha_, the Zigbee is just a serial radio, get another zigbee and spam serial at it and see what happens
12:56 Sasha_ But aren't they expensive those modules?
12:57 Sgt_Lemming not amazingly so
12:57 Sgt_Lemming in single lots they are expensive, in bulk they probably pay $10 per module
12:58 Thermoelectric Doesn't look like that zigbee module has any connections to an external antenna? Might be a seperate communications module on there somewhere?
12:59 Sasha_ Well, if you look at the album, there is a pic where the pcb is entirely covered by a plastic shield minus the big 'antenna' part
13:00 Thermoelectric Yeah, but would there not be a wire from the zigbee to the other module? It looks like the antenna for it is that little thing on its own board.
13:00 Sgt_Lemming Thermoelectric, it could be routed through the board, but it's unlikely
13:01 Thermoelectric Sgt_Lemming, there were no connections for RF on the datasheet you linked, apart from ground.
13:01 Thermoelectric And if that's just an antenna, why does it have a 5V connection to it?
13:01 Sgt_Lemming yeah, so not sure what that big board is for
13:02 Thermoelectric One of the pictures shows that big board as having a can under it, I'm guessing it's a seperate communications thing.
13:02 Mom_phone joined #thegeekgroup
13:02 Sgt_Lemming yeah, looks like there might be another wireless module under that board
13:02 Sgt_Lemming ah, I didn't notice that one, well spotted
13:03 Sasha_ But what is it?
13:03 Sgt_Lemming without seeing a lot more of it's guts Sasha_, all I can say is a radio of some kind
13:04 Sasha_ What else do you need to see?
13:04 Sgt_Lemming just sent the pic to a mate who is an RF tech to see if he can guess what freq it is
13:05 Sasha_ You know one?
13:07 Sgt_Lemming mate of mine does RF electronics design for a living
13:08 Sgt_Lemming he specialises in antenna design
13:08 Sgt_Lemming his current project, flat panel RFID antennae for a ski field so their skiers can just ski straight over the antenna buried under the snow at the base of the lift
13:10 Sasha_ OMG that is epic! He should totally put that all over the place!
13:12 Sgt_Lemming he not only designed them, but is also routing them out of sheets of aluminium clad perspex on his CNC router
13:12 Sgt_Lemming they are about 4 feet long by 1 foot wide
13:13 Thermoelectric "The new lighting product has a smart sensor that detects movement and control the brightness accordingly. It also features the ‘ZigBee’ wireless technology, which allows users to remotely control the lighting.
13:13 Thermoelectric "
13:13 Sgt_Lemming I don't think that board is people detectiong
13:13 Sgt_Lemming -g
13:14 Sasha_ Where did you find that?
13:14 Sgt_Lemming although it *can* be done with microwave, that'd play hell with the zigbee module
13:14 Thermoelectric http://www.brightwire.com/news/190325-aurora-design-lab-develops-wireless-led-lighting-to-maximize-power-conservation
13:14 BotSteve Title: Aurora Design Lab Develops Wireless LED Lighting to Maximize Power Conservation | BrightWire
13:14 Sgt_Lemming that antenna looks to be reasonably high frequency
13:14 Thermoelectric Just a bit of Googling, Sasha.
13:14 Thermoelectric What other purpose would the window in the front of it serve then?
13:16 Sasha_ Well, I needed some proof. The guy that gave this to us told me that there is NO wireless interface, despite repeated demands, and my dad won't believe me without solid proof.
13:17 Thermoelectric That's the only thing I've found regarding it so far.
13:21 Sgt_Lemming Thermoelectric, there wouldn't need to be a window for RF anyway
13:21 Sgt_Lemming I think the window is partly for looks, but there is also a light sensor there
13:22 Thermoelectric Where's the light sensor?
13:22 Sasha_ Oh, next to the module
13:22 Sgt_Lemming the "window" is just a hole in a metal cover over both radios as well
13:22 Thermoelectric Oh, yeah, I see it.
13:22 Sasha_ Yes but there is also a transparent cover over the entire thing aswell
13:23 Thermoelectric So the bottom board is the SMPS?
13:23 Sgt_Lemming ok, mate says the frequency is probaly... 24GHz
13:23 Sgt_Lemming yes
13:23 Thermoelectric O_o
13:23 Sgt_Lemming not 2.4, 24
13:23 Sgt_Lemming so probably is microwave based movement detection in that case
13:23 Thermoelectric Interesting.
13:24 Thermoelectric I wonder if it dims the light or just turns it off completely when there is no movement...
13:25 Pricey joined #thegeekgroup
13:26 Sasha_ I think it dims to 5/10%
13:26 Thermoelectric Wait, that's not the SMPS board at the bottom? It's got DC_IN. The SMPS must just run at a set voltage output, and the control board that we can see must just PWM it.
13:27 slewfoot joined #thegeekgroup
13:27 Sgt_Lemming if you look at the right hand side of both boards there is a small 3 pin connector with a pin clearly labeled PWM
13:28 Thermoelectric Ah, I see.
13:28 Sgt_Lemming so I think the bottom board IS the smps, but it uses the top board to set the duty cycle dependent on it's programming
13:29 Thermoelectric The bottom board doesn't look like a SMPS though, as it does no voltage conversions, nor even filtering. The board gets DC from somewhere else.
13:29 Thermoelectric (okay, maybe some voltage conversions/filtering with the inductors)
13:29 Sgt_Lemming that doesn't mean it's not an SMPS though
13:30 Sgt_Lemming you can have a DC to DC SMPS, I am designing one atm
13:30 Thermoelectric Yeah, I know, I just assumed it'd be easier to have it all on the one board?
13:30 Sgt_Lemming not neccesarily
13:31 Sgt_Lemming if you have an AC - DC adaptor board, an LED driver board and a controller board, it saves you have to design 1 giant board for each variation of the light
13:31 Thermoelectric This is true.
13:32 Sgt_Lemming those are some BIG smd resistors in the middle of the board as well
13:32 Sasha_ There is a giant 24v 10a meanwell power supply inside
13:32 Sgt_Lemming there you go :-P
13:32 Thermoelectric Ahh.
13:33 Thermoelectric They'd be running that for all it's got trying to get 240W from it.
13:33 Sasha_ Nah, actually the LEDs take up 150w, but they're future proofing it
13:33 Thermoelectric Makes sense.
13:34 * Thermoelectric goes to bed. Night!
13:34 Sasha_ Apparently there is some sort of wire that you can cut after 5 years to increase power to 100% instead of 70%

16:49 Experimentonomen evening mitch
16:50 GGR_Mitchell Hi experimentonomen
16:50 Electricguy i want a pair of good sounding headphones

16:57 Electricguy the MONSTER Beats by Dre Studios are supposed to be good
16:57 Electricguy they are basically studio headphones with better design
16:57 Electricguy but then, i can buy studio headphones with less design crap..
16:58 GGR_Mitchell This is going to be an interesting show. ALL COMPUTERS ARE CRASHING UP HERE! It's show time! Let's see what happens!
16:58 Electricguy oh god XD
16:58 Experimentonomen is there really any sound diff in studio headphones compared to consumer ones ? other than that studio ones are made to be comfortable to wearf all day
16:59 Experimentonomen cant even connect
16:59 Electricguy yes. the sound can differ a LOT.
16:59 SparkyProjects Aren't studio ones supposed to have better dynamic range ?
17:00 epictang0 Experimentonomen: i cant listen to crap headphones anymore
17:00 epictang0 SparkyProjects: yes
17:00 GGR_Mitchell For some reason experimentonmen the streaming computer restarted. it's booting up now.
17:00 Electricguy i got some 30 dollar iEar headphones and a plantronics camecom 377 headset. the plantronics headset, which was about 50 bucks sounds lighyears better than the iEar ones
17:00 Experimentonomen mitch, foto the computer lab and ask for a new better computer ;) cprossu can help :p
17:01 SparkyProjects It's the difference between putting good speakers in a thin plywood box, and the same speakers in a well designed box as well
17:01 Electricguy the freq range on the AKG by Harman Q701BLK is 10-39800Hz! o_O
17:01 Experimentonomen thin plywood sounds like some cerwin vega models :P
17:05 Electricguy the cerwin vegas we got in our garage are made from 22mm chipboard
17:08 Seroster BÖRK
17:11 Mom_phone Bjork.
17:11 Electricguy one other thing i'm thinking about is modding my plantronics headset into a pair of headphones..
17:11 Electricguy cause i really don't use the mic
17:12 Electricguy i kind of wonder why i bought a headset in the first place.. lol

17:13 GGRMcCoy We have several people in the building right now working on getting us back on-the-air. I'll give you updates as they become available.
17:14 GGRMcCoy experimentonomen: we are working on fixing our stream. I'm not joking... 3 computers crashed in a row today in our studio.
17:15 Experimentonomen GGRMcCoy, well my isp changed their policy and have now capped me to 200kbit for the rest of the month because the change was to max 30GB data per month :(

19:18 SparkyProjects I haven't done any amp vids

19:20 Monkeh SparkyProjects: It looks pretty cool, though.
19:20 astro73|roam oh ok
19:20 SparkyProjects yeah, until it goes wrong :P
19:21 mashpriborintorg then it becomes a paper weight :p
19:21 Electricguy then you have a fancy display piece XD
19:21 Monkeh A really pretty one
19:22 mashpriborintorg I love your organiser cabinet, Sparky... I would need a dozen of the whole thing tho :p
19:24 SparkyProjects The one for the trays ?
19:24 SparkyProjects Good thing about that is you can expand on it, like add another cheek to one side and make it 2 trays wide, and even make it higher
19:25 mashpriborintorg the problem would be if the type of compartment boxes you use are discontinued from sale :/
19:26 mashpriborintorg I have at least 10 different models of such boxes...
19:26 SparkyProjects That's true, but those are made by Stanley, and a (then local) DIY store had their own version exactly the same size
19:27 mashpriborintorg they must be quite expensive
19:29 SparkyProjects They are a bit, but they are robust, they are "Stanley 1-92-749 Deep Pro Organizer" (just found online) and are £13
19:29 SparkyProjects But you may find a big DIY store selling similar at lower prices
19:32 mashpriborintorg such boxes become very heavy once filled up to the top with screws and bolts...
19:32 mashpriborintorg not to be dropped :p
19:33 Electricguy lol
19:33 SparkyProjects There's some shallower (own brand) ones here for £9.98 http://search.diy.com/search#w=organiser

19:33 Electricguy what a useless box!
19:34 Electricguy the form factor makes it totally useless..
19:34 Electricguy really deep boxes inside
19:34 Electricguy only suitable if you got LOTS of the same thing
19:34 SparkyProjects Yep, that's the same as i use
19:34 Electricguy worst idea ever to mix stuff in the small boxes
19:34 SparkyProjects i have Stanley and Focus
19:34 Monkeh You can get metal cases that deep which have a tray for shallow boxes.
19:35 Monkeh <3 proper metal cases.
19:35 Electricguy </3 metal cases for portable applications
19:35 SparkyProjects If you have the internal boxes with dividers, it's a good idea to glue the dividers in place to stop them lifting and mixing parts
19:36 Monkeh Electricguy: Why? They're no heavier than plastic ones.
19:36 Electricguy in some cases, yes :P
19:36 mashpriborintorg I have 8 of such boxes filled with screws, 2 filled with leds, a dozen filled with electronic parts, and 5 filled with... pacemakers
19:36 Electricguy i'd bet metal boxes are heavier than my conductive plastic ones :P
19:37 ovestein joined #thegeekgroup
19:37 ovestein Hello!
19:37 Monkeh Electricguy: They're really not heavy at all. They're very thin.
19:38 Monkeh One of the advantages of steel over ABS: it's really quite strong without being half an inch thick.
19:38 Electricguy then they become fragile :P
19:38 Monkeh Anything's fragile enough if you put 2800 screws in it.
19:39 Electricguy nope :P
19:39 Electricguy not a 1inch thick CrMo steel box :P
19:39 Monkeh Anyway, back to reality
19:39 ovestein what is you two descuss?
19:39 Electricguy a 1 inch thick CrMo steel box is reality :)
19:39 mashpriborintorg and damn heavy, even more if the screws are little, because they will all the space, and you end up with almost a block of steel weigh
19:40 Monkeh You can get cases like this, deep enough to take two layers of shallow containers: http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/handtools-storage-workwear/tool-storage-workbenches/tool-storage/organisers/B-and-Q-Large-Metal-Organiser-Case-11247841

19:43 Electricguy had 12 120mm PAPST fans laying around
19:43 Monkeh In more seriousness
19:43 Monkeh Using fan frames with the struts and hub removed as ducts works really well

20:19 SparkyProjects Driving would not be recommended without enough sleep, but if you can take a 'power nap' for an hour or so, that should help

20:19 wannabe1987 no, sparky, it wouldn't, but i must make it "home" some how....

20:22 SparkyProjects Not too bad, while driving, open window at least a bit for fresh air, and listen to something that keeps  you alert, and not distracts you
20:22 astro73|roam it's also ok to take it slow
20:22 SparkyProjects At any point on the way home if you feel drowsy, stop and walk around a bit, maybe take a drink with you

20:23 wannabe1987 computer is too slow to gv as well
20:24 wannabe1987 it keeps changing pages onme cuz scripts are having issues zomg
20:24 SparkyProjects Women with kids go into autopilot :P
20:24 torpid wannabe1987, wha?  too slow?  page changes?  how many/what extensions are you running?
20:25 wannabe1987 not very and idk which ones
20:25 wannabe1987 it changes from fb to lifehacker/gmail when scripts on that page stop working
20:26 astro73|roam huh?
20:26 torpid i'd disable all your extensions and start from there.  typically ad blockers and greasemonkey scripts I've found cause the most headache
20:26 astro73|roam freaky
20:26 astro73|roam ad blockers shouldn't be switching between sites
20:26 SparkyProjects wannabe, if you download the gtalk fadget, it sits in the corner of your screen with a contact list, Niobe and i use that for chat, works well
20:26 SparkyProjects *gadget
20:27 wannabe1987 then its prolly my adblocker, but i like adblock plus!!!! :(
20:27 wannabe1987 i would, sparky, but my screen space is limited on my netbook....
20:27 astro73|roam i'm using adblock plus, and I've never seen that kind of behavior
20:27 astro73|roam it should only kill requests, not switch pages
20:28 wannabe1987 i swear none of my stuff works properly
20:28 torpid if adblocker is the culprit, i'm sure they will release a updated filter list soon to correct it.
20:28 wannabe1987 i don't think adblock is the problem
20:28 astro73|roam hhrlisa recomends a nap and caffeine
20:28 wannabe1987 but its the scripts that stop working so then i have to tell them to kill themselves that is the issue
20:28 astro73|roam like firefox says the script is slow?
20:28 SparkyProjects I use a netbook too when away from here, it doesn't get in the way, the chat window can be any size and where you want it
20:28 torpid it can be, theres always incentives to mess with people who have software that manipulates what's delivered to them
20:29 astro73|roam torpid: adblock plus is the gold standard, afaik
20:29 wannabe1987 yes astro
20:29 torpid astro73|roam, it is, but it's not foolproof

20:34 wannabe1987 o dear
20:34 torpid browsers are such resource hogs nowadays.  they can eat up a gig of ram easily
20:34 GGR_Mitchell It is possible the suspects remain at large, according to officials.
20:34 wannabe1987 yeah, thats about all i got, is a gig of ram....
20:34 wannabe1987 i need the boden computer please
20:35 Seroster joined #thegeekgroup
20:36 torpid ouch, yeah, modern OS'es can take up about a gig of ram from a clean boot, so i think its more of a firefox choking on your system problem than anything
20:36 SparkyProjects My netbook had a gig of ram, but upgraded to 2gig
20:36 exor674 doubt you'd need that powerful of a box, wannabe1987
20:36 wannabe1987 exor674, for everything i'd like to do on here or on sarah, i think i'd enjoy the fast speeds.
20:36 wannabe1987 i know, i'll give the boden machine to my father, and take his mac and use that!
20:36 Electricguy but not the pricetag :P
20:37 torpid i'm starting to feel the pressure on my 4 gigs of ram on gnome 3 with many many browser tabs open
20:37 wannabe1987 i did not say i was buying the boden computer, just using it
20:37 exor674 wannabe1987: I'd probably get something that wasn't a netbook, honestly -- netbooks are great in the right use-pattern, but probably not as a primary machine
20:37 Seroster argh
20:37 wannabe1987 yeah, well, it was a hand me down / christmas presant
20:37 Electricguy as primary machines, netbooks really suck
20:37 wannabe1987 i don't choose my computers.  they get given to me
20:38 Seroster Damn computer mouse died...
20:38 Electricguy i paid about 400 bucks for my stationary machine. and it's fine

20:38 exor674 I <3 my netbook, but I would go insane if that was all I had
20:38 SparkyProjects *mousekeys
20:38 Seroster Why do you get crappy computers, wannabe1987?
20:38 wannabe1987 thus far, i have not bought one computer (minus a desktop thats in ohio) that i use since having my owe computer starting in 05
20:38 torpid yeah, fast desktop machines can be had for cheap
20:38 wannabe1987 because they're hand me downs
20:39 Seroster Banging it against the table a few times works. I like fixing things =)
20:39 Experimentonomen atm its putting around 5W peak into a little 8 ohm speaker
20:39 Electricguy a netbook was all i had for about a year.. then i got sick of the slow damn junk XD
20:39 wannabe1987 someone gets sick of it/gets a new cmoputer and gives me their old one
20:42 wannabe1987 .
20:42 Seroster Btw, what are some fun parts from an Oil Burner?
20:42 Seroster Except for the xformer.
20:43 Seroster Found a guy selling one on ebay. Shipping is 30bucks, but he can remove the xformer and scrap the rest.
20:43 SparkyProjects There's the pump and jet, the jet usually sprays wide angle
20:43 SparkyProjects there's also the blower and motor
20:43 Seroster Hrm.
20:43 Seroster SparkyProjects, Fired the coil.
20:44 Seroster Just made a lot of noise and a lot of ozone, not much in the sparks department. :c

22:09 yNos think i might just find a torrent..
22:10 Seroster This tesla coil, I think the spark jumps the gap, and then the capacitor dumps all it's power into the short the spark gap makes... Path of least resistance?
22:11 yNos i just need a few.. 2500 greater than 12.2, and 2901 greater than 15.1...
22:11 SparkyProjects yeah, when the spark jumps it shorts, and dumps the capacitor charge into the priimary
22:11 Seroster Also, If the transformer is indeed 4-0-4 I should have an arc that can jump about .8cm in air, I only get about .5 which seems plausible to round off to .2 due to humidity
22:13 Seroster I'd need a high voltage voltmeter.
22:13 Seroster With a 1% accuracy rating.
22:13 Electricguy bedtime! night all
22:13 Guest27941 joined #thegeekgroup
22:15 SparkyProjects .5 seems about right, my 11KV gap is about .5 to .6
22:16 Seroster I've been told that 1kv gives 1mm in air
22:17 SparkyProjects Yeah, in a perfect world
22:17 Seroster Ah.
22:17 Seroster Btw.
22:18 Seroster When my capacitor bank unloads into the spark gap, what stops the spark gap from in essence staying shorted?
22:18 Seroster If the air is ionized the transformer has no problem sustaining the arc
