00:00 HighMan How's that electrical for you?
00:00 SparkyProjects oh, the pic, that's noting
00:00 Monkeh SparkyProjects: He's never seen a South American wire nest before.
00:00 SparkyProjects *nothing
00:00 HighMan That was from Vietnam
00:00 HighMan ....What's worse...
00:00 Monkeh South America with different skin tones, your point?
00:01 HighMan ??
00:01 Monkeh They're all backwater countries. :P

00:02 Monkeh HighMan: If I dug up a _really_ bad installation, you wouldn't know enough to see the faults :P
00:02 HighMan XD
00:02 Monkeh I'll be back after this beating of an X server with a stick.
00:02 HighMan I've seen pictures of electrical sockets inside a bathtub/shower..
00:02 HighMan Have fun!
00:06 tonsofpcs I have seen sockets inside a shower area....
00:06 SparkyProjects Highman, i tried searching for the image without succes
00:06 SparkyProjects But there was a building that looked like a mass of icy was growing up the side, originating from a hole in the side, but it was all wires
00:06 HighMan O_O
00:06 HighMan That sounds REALLY scary.
00:07 tonsofpcs oh, I've seen that one
00:07 tonsofpcs have you seen the paper-built transformer welder?
00:07 HighMan No?

00:08 tonsofpcs that last one is actually a nice install

00:09 Seroster SparkyProjects, impedance, reactance, capacitance, any good mneumonics, or ways of remembering it all?
00:09 HighMan Just. Damn.
00:09 HighMan I wouldn't like to fix any of those problems.
00:09 Seroster Fix?
00:10 HighMan Replace?
00:10 Seroster Those problems you fix with a chainsaw
00:10 HighMan XD

00:12 Seroster no
00:12 Seroster It's still stupid.
00:12 HighMan lol
00:13 HighMan Looks cool though

00:15 SparkyProjects Sure (where's my 10 foot pole)
00:15 HighMan Hahahaha
00:17 Seroster SparkyProjects, You left it next to your wife ;D
00:17 Seroster (as in, wouldn't touch her with a ten foot pole)
00:18 SparkyProjects you mean Ex :D
00:18 Seroster SparkyProjects, impedance, reactance, capacitance, any good mneumonics, or ways of remembering it all?
00:19 SparkyProjects Best is to go research it and come up with your own, you're more likely to remember
00:19 Seroster Because yesterday my teacher said "Obtw, We haven't had time for this yet, and its not much left before summer... So... Here's trigonometry, we'll have an exam monday morning!"
00:19 Seroster Two damn days xD
00:23 Seroster Unit for reactance, henry, what is it called in "math"?
00:23 Seroster l?
00:24 Yrouel tonsofpcs you should see a derivation box in "my" house

00:27 BotSteve tonsofpcs: http://www.smarthome.com/25401/Single-Gang-Deep-Wall-Box-22-Cubic-Inches/p.aspx
00:27 Monkeh That reminds me.
00:28 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Why on earth do we still use square bleedin' boxes?
00:28 Seroster Power factor should be kept as close to one as possible, eh?
00:28 Monkeh (and rectangular, obviously)
00:28 HighMan They are easier to cut then circles? xD
00:28 tonsofpcs Seroster: depends how your company bills you ;)
00:28 Monkeh HighMan: .. Except they're not.
00:28 Seroster Watts. tonsofpcs  ;P
00:28 tonsofpcs Monkeh: sure they are.
00:28 Yrouel tonsofpcs yep those
00:28 HighMan ...You can cut circles with a drywall knife?
00:28 Monkeh HighMan: Yes.
00:29 HighMan ....
00:29 tonsofpcs HighMan: yes.  Quite easily, actually.
00:29 HighMan I would think square/rect are easier to cut xD
00:29 Monkeh And I can cut a circle a hell of a lot faster than you with my holesaw.
00:29 Monkeh And I can sink one into block a lot faster, too.
00:29 tonsofpcs rectangular boxes are probably used because you can scale gracefully.
00:30 SparkyProjects What's wrong with square boxes ?
00:30 SparkyProjects STraigh sides means easier to use conduit
00:30 Yrouel Monkeh you reminded me that the question "why on earth we still use..." apply to many things in the us
00:30 Monkeh SparkyProjects: They're a pain in the butt to sink in.
00:30 Yrouel like imperial units...
00:30 HighMan Haha ^
00:30 Monkeh I see no problem with adapters which can connect with round boxes
00:30 SparkyProjects Not if you have the right tool
00:30 Seroster monkeh Err... Jigsaw.
00:31 HighMan Pneumatic Air Hammer.
00:31 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Those chisels wear out pretty quick.
00:31 HighMan It'll fix all your problems!
00:31 Monkeh Seroster: Uuhhh.
00:31 Monkeh You go ahead and try using a jigsaw on my wall.
00:31 Monkeh Good luck with that.
00:31 Yrouel he in italy we use primarily round boxes just for wires, rectangular if a walled or a switch has to be mount
00:31 SparkyProjects There's no reason why you can't put round conduit boxes in the wall, as long as you don't mind surface sockets
00:31 tonsofpcs Monkeh: can you see an average home owner figuring out how to get a circular wall box in-place and attached properlyy to conduit so that there's an electrical connection?  I'd bet most would just cut the conduit back and not attach it.
00:31 Yrouel outlet sorry
00:32 tonsofpcs Yrouel: oh, a junction box.
00:32 tonsofpcs we have rounded-square junction boxes too
00:32 Monkeh tonsofpcs: ... The average home owner can't figure out how to do that with a square box.
00:32 HighMan Or just wire straight to the outlet, electrical tape it, then you are done!
00:32 tonsofpcs Monkeh: true.  But it's that much harder.
00:32 Monkeh tonsofpcs: Nor does the average home owner have any of the required skills to use conduit as a CPC!
00:32 tonsofpcs s/electrical/scotch/
00:33 tonsofpcs Monkeh: the average home owner probably doesn't know what conduit is, yet alone skill or a CPC ;)
00:33 Monkeh Am I the only one who finds it amusing that 'electrical' tape is _insulating_, not conducting? :)
00:33 HighMan XD
00:33 SparkyProjects You wouldn't want to sink holes in my walls, they are solid granite :P
00:33 HighMan o_O
00:33 Yrouel tonsofpcs our electrical system is a nightmer a sort of hybrid between the old one inside the walls and a supposed new one placed outside
00:33 tonsofpcs we have a load center sunk into a cinder block wall with gypsum and hardwood facing....
00:33 Monkeh SparkyProjects: It's doable. You just need a diabolical amount of diamond and water :D
00:34 tonsofpcs all conduit comes out the sides of the panel (inside the wall)
00:34 HighMan Granite Walls?
00:34 HighMan That's alot of granite...
00:35 SparkyProjects Well, not sure if they are acrually granite, but it wears out good drills very quick
00:35 Seroster You wouldn't want to sink holes in my walls, they are 50% asbestos!
00:35 HighMan That's nice Seroster!
00:35 HighMan SparkyProjects, Your whole house is.... Granite?
00:35 tonsofpcs Seroster: again, a lot of diamond and water :-p
00:35 Yrouel tonsofpcs btw can someone tell me why in the usa most houses are made of wood ?
00:35 HighMan As opposed to...
00:35 tonsofpcs ah, but can you not also build bridges out of stone?
00:36 Yrouel bicks and cement
00:36 tonsofpcs Yrouel: europeans got here, saw trees in the way of building houses, decided to use those trees to build houses?
00:36 Seroster Yeah, SparkyProjects secretes a slime that becomes granite.  When he moved in it was all just cardboard, then his body deposited a good foot or so of granite on it =)
00:36 Yrouel bricks
00:36 HighMan lol
00:36 HighMan It's half and half?
00:36 SparkyProjects All the outside walls are, the inside has been refitted with stud walls (timber and sheetrock), but there's not many of those
00:37 Seroster (The windows come from when he sneezes)
00:37 tonsofpcs the main structure of this building is cinder block, some interior walls are stud walls.
00:37 tonsofpcs the house I grew up in was partially brick

00:37 HighMan Hey wannabe1987
00:37 Yrouel well it has been always a curiosity of mine especially when I see tragedies such tornadoes and hurricanes I think why they don't build a solid house once and for all instead of a lightweigh one everytime a tornato struck
00:38 Seroster I have no idea how much asbestos my concrete walls contain, but I do know that they contain SOME asbestos.l
00:38 tonsofpcs Yrouel: wood hurts a lot less than stone.
00:38 wannabe1987 hi hy
00:38 * wannabe1987 is SO TIRED
00:38 wannabe1987 *yawn*
00:38 Yrouel beign impaled by wood is not pretty...

00:39 wannabe1987 better be chocolate!

00:39 tonsofpcs wannabe1987: thanks for reminding me *goes to get laundry and then run out for food*
00:39 wannabe1987 no prob :)
00:39 HighMan A day is only 24.25 hours.
00:39 tonsofpcs also, why is your dryer borked? didn't you jsut move in?
00:39 wannabe1987 it musta been borked before
00:39 wannabe1987 yes i did
00:40 wannabe1987 it won't heat, only tumble.  its gas dryer, idk if its lighting
00:40 HighMan It has a mind of it's own.
00:40 tonsofpcs we have coin-op dryers here, one of them does that sometimes.  He comes and fixes it when it does.  Probably some craptastic wiring inside
00:40 HighMan Is the hose.... Connected in to the back?
00:40 wannabe1987 yes
00:40 HighMan Just Making sure lol
00:41 wannabe1987 cpro was back there the otherday plugging it in :P
00:41 HighMan Where does the air come from exactly?
00:41 HighMan Haha
00:41 HighMan There's a dead pidgeon in it!
00:41 tonsofpcs HighMan: generally, the room
00:41 tonsofpcs the hose is usually for exhaust
00:41 HighMan Oh!
00:42 tonsofpcs http://home.howstuffworks.com/dryer.htm
00:42 BotSteve Title: HowStuffWorks "How Clothes Dryers Work"
00:42 HighMan So... If I enclosed my self in a room with a Dryer. I'd be suffocated to death?
00:42 Monkeh Yrouel: A brick house is.. not particularly tornado resistant.
00:42 SparkyProjects Wannabe said it was gas
00:43 SparkyProjects so there would be a hose for the gas supply
00:43 Yrouel Monkeh uhm I thought that at least for the less powerfull ones those would be ok
00:43 Monkeh Yrouel: If it's actually a tornado.. not so much.
00:43 wannabe1987 its connected, sparky
00:43 Yrouel maybe you just have to rebuild the roof
00:43 Monkeh The walls are strong in compression.
00:43 Monkeh The forces from a tornado would just crack the mortar and there goes the building.
00:43 Yrouel uhm
00:44 Yrouel hurricanes?
00:44 Yrouel same thing?
00:44 SparkyProjects OK, checklist, is gas turned on (electrics must be on as the drum turns), has the gas been bled though ? (could be air in the pipe)
00:44 Monkeh Yrouel: Not exactly, no.
00:44 wannabe1987 EDT said that the gas was never shut off, so i assume its on.....
00:44 tonsofpcs hurricanes don't tend to destroy houses in that way...
00:45 HighMan wannabe1987, Get yourself a lighter. It  will tell you immediately.
00:45 wannabe1987 i haven't bled the gas, i don't know....
00:45 wannabe1987 no, i use the lighter in the house....the dryer is on the "enclosed" porch
00:45 SparkyProjects There may be a local gas tap near the machine, unless it's a connector that seals when unplugged
00:45 tonsofpcs wannabe1987: ignore HighMan.  Have the landlord fix it.
00:45 HighMan HAHA ^
00:45 Yrouel so for ecample in the case of katrina which was devastating brick houses whould have survived?
00:45 tonsofpcs Yrouel: not really.
00:45 wannabe1987 trust me, i know better than to take HighMan's "advice"
00:46 tonsofpcs Katrina was all sheer-wind damage and flood damage.
00:46 HighMan :P
00:46 Monkeh No, because you'll find a wall of water is pretty effective too.
00:46 tonsofpcs wannabe1987: I just wanted it to be clear :)
00:46 Yrouel oh ok
00:46 Monkeh More buildings would have 'survived', but.. you'd have to demolish them anyway.
00:46 HighMan I'll be that one person welding a gas pipe... While the gas is on.
00:46 Monkeh They'd be structurally compromised right down to the foundations
00:47 wannabe1987 repairclinic.com says gto check the igniter, coils, and fuse
00:47 tonsofpcs Yrouel: we had flooding from a hurricane here in September.  The NYFD folks who came to help said it looked worse than Katrina.  We have wood buildings still standing and brick/cinder buildings that fell.  Mostly the buildings that were 'destroyed' are just not inhabbitable due to the flooding  -- mold and foundations no longer sitting.
00:47 Monkeh Yrouel: It's easier to bomb-proof a building than hurricane-proof one.
00:47 SparkyProjects Yrouel: wood is sometimes better in a storm because it flexes, brick and stone are sometimes better in a storm because it doesn't flex
00:47 SparkyProjects we have tornados in the UK too :P
00:47 wannabe1987 amen
00:47 tonsofpcs step 1: Build on high ground.
00:47 odbr joined #thegeekgroup
00:47 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Well, masonry houses can flex. Older ones anyway.
00:47 Monkeh A modern one is rather more rigid.
00:48 tonsofpcs step 2: reinforce all ground between you and about 8000' below sea level
00:48 wannabe1987 we're trying to "hurricane proof" houses (one room structures) for haiti and its difficult....
00:48 SparkyProjects Try to flex this one, it's about 100 years old :P
00:48 Monkeh Step 3: Build using reinforced concrete.
00:48 Yrouel we don't have tornadoes and hurricanes or bettere they are very rare and not so potet
00:48 HighMan Why not build a house.... Underground?
00:48 Yrouel potent
00:48 tonsofpcs SparkyProjects: remember, concrete never actually dries.
00:48 Monkeh Seriously, bomb-proofing is easier.
00:48 Monkeh tonsofpcs: It's not concrete.
00:48 Monkeh SparkyProjects: Lime and horse-hair mortar?
00:49 SparkyProjects Mine isn't lime
00:49 Monkeh Unusual at that age.
00:49 HighMan What's an alternative to fiberglass?
00:49 SparkyProjects and i live on the side of a mountain :D
00:49 HighMan I was up in my attic, and when I came down, my legs weren't itching like hell.
00:49 tonsofpcs made from the mountain itself, mayhaps?
00:49 Monkeh SparkyProjects: So it's just a load of granite and mud, then. :P
00:49 odbr joined #thegeekgroup
00:49 Yrouel actually in the island were I grow up we didn't have earthquakes either
00:49 SparkyProjects Cement Monkeh
00:50 tonsofpcs Yrouel: next you're going to tell us that Italy doesn't have Volcanoes.
00:50 Monkeh Wow, actual cement.
00:50 SparkyProjects remember that cement came in with the romans :P
00:50 Monkeh Yeah, that won't have much flex in it unless it's got lime added
00:50 Yrouel tonsofpcs well the penisula is seismic and volcainc in some parts
00:50 Yrouel but the islant next to it
00:50 Monkeh True, but lime mortar is more common in older buildings round here
00:50 Yrouel about the center of the mediterranean see
00:50 Yrouel is much more ancient
00:51 tonsofpcs sicily?
00:51 Yrouel nope the other big one

00:51 tonsofpcs ah
00:51 Yrouel sicily is both volcanic and seismic
00:51 Yrouel it gets pressure from africa
00:51 HighMan Anyone ever been in an earthquake?
00:52 tonsofpcs yes
00:52 Monkeh HighMan: Pretty much everyone.
00:52 tonsofpcs kinda
00:52 tonsofpcs i mean, not "in"
00:52 tonsofpcs that'd be weird

00:58 SparkyProjects If you back up past the takeaway, that is something like my view (i'm further north in Caerau)
00:58 Yrouel I'm wondering how many times someone missed his house for example at night drunk...

01:08 SparkyProjects That's close to my house, i'm a little further down, but that view is about right
01:08 SparkyProjects We don't have mailboxes on the street, we have letterboxes in the door
01:09 HighMan Haven't heard about those in forever... That's actually kind of neat lol
01:09 HighMan Only things that scares me is that there is a main street running nextt to the houses.... I'm scared of running in to a car, or a car crashing in to the house... A robber coming in... Or just noise.
01:10 SparkyProjects My house is in a quiet road, but the front door is as close to the road as the previous row of houses i linked to, imagine a mailbox on the path :P

04:40 tonsofpcs my most recent favorite is what the local fox station does to the dunkin donuts commercial
04:40 tonsofpcs my 100% favorite is what I saw in ESPNZone in  NewYork, NewYork.
04:40 exor674 yeah, it's FOX doing it
04:40 tonsofpcs (over 8 sets of boxes -- oh, and the same company controlled the image from lens to display)
04:41 tonsofpcs well, it's probably the local fox
04:41 tonsofpcs is it on now?
04:41 tonsofpcs (now = syndication time -- we have I Dream of Jeanie on!)
04:42 exor674 it's on now locally yeah
04:43 exor674 it's proably almost over though ( and I just accidenally told my tv to rescan trying to see if there was a crop option
04:43 exor674 the best thing I've seen is
04:43 exor674 16:9 content letterboxed to 4:whatever
04:43 exor674 6:whatever pillerboxed back to 16:9
04:45 exor674 especially bad when I was using a non-widescreen tv
04:45 exor674 because my reciever letterboxed it again
04:45 tonsofpcs I lost you there.
04:46 exor674 looked like they letterboxed a widescreen content to convert it to standard, converted it back to widescreen
04:46 exor674 which my reciever converted back to stanard
04:46 exor674 so it was a tiiiiny video in the middle of blackness
04:47 tonsofpcs ok, so it was double-boxed.  Your receiver should have zoom options so that you can remove a box, then it would be single-boxed.
04:47 tonsofpcs (it shouldn't have been double-boxed, but still, you could fix it)
04:47 exor674 it had a crop widescreen option
04:48 exor674 so I could have fixed it ;P
04:48 tonsofpcs I now have a 16:9 set on standard cable so when I watch shows on things like USA Network that are 16:9, they letterbox them into 4:3, then the set defaults to pillarboxing them, but I can zoom it to be full screen.
04:49 tonsofpcs When the 16:9/4:3 stuff was out of hand (before there was a standard way to track image format -- at least, before it was applied to everything), we used to perform a 14:9 crop/box on anything that wasn't flagged.  16:9 content would end up with thin bars top/bottom and 4:3 content would end up with thin bars left/right.
04:50 tonsofpcs of course, the reason I could do that is the BBC decided that 14:9 was a good 'compromise' production format so that there were always bars...
04:51 exor674 and lol, now FOX is using the squishing letterbox for a NWS crawl
04:52 tonsofpcs oh, we have a station here that does (did?) that, with an overlay of a map.  They'd take a 16:9 full frame HD show, switch to the 4:3 version, shrink it, overlay over portion of it, .... ugh
04:52 tonsofpcs when it happened in primetime, I'd shut it off and then go watch the show from the cable on-demand system the next day.
04:53 exor674 I wonder why this shit happens in this day and age

05:10 tehdark45 VAT is tax for the americans

05:12 tehdark45 its a magical device
05:12 tehdark45 :P
05:12 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: what type of footwear?
05:12 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Safety.
05:12 tonsofpcs right, like?
05:12 Monkeh|Lap Uh.. boots?
05:12 tonsofpcs what kind is it that you have that we don't?
05:12 Monkeh|Lap Steel toes, steel midsoles, shock prevention..
05:12 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Better minimum ratings? :P
05:13 tonsofpcs I need to find a new brand of steel-toe + electric rated boots
05:13 Monkeh|Lap s/prevention/protection/
05:13 Monkeh|Lap Electric rated as in insulated, or anti-static?
05:13 Monkeh|Lap Because insulated boots aren't all that common
05:13 tonsofpcs insulated, rated for V+A
05:13 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, they're fairly uncommon
05:14 Monkeh|Lap On the other hand, what voltages are you dealing with?
05:14 tonsofpcs I can get one or the other (steel toed or insulated/rated) but both is hard.
05:14 tonsofpcs Me or the average guy with boots?
05:14 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: You might find non-metallic caps are easier to find.
05:14 Monkeh|Lap You.
05:14 tonsofpcs I think the highest anything we have normally operates is ~10kV
05:15 Monkeh|Lap Ah, right, at those voltages, you _do_ need insulated.
05:15 tonsofpcs that said, I'd rather not play with it with it anywhere above oh, 0.
05:15 Monkeh|Lap Some people have the strange idea that normal anti-static footwear isn't safe around more normal (up to around 400V) voltages.
05:16 tonsofpcs my 'normal' boots are rated for normal voltages (up to maybe 1kV? I'd have to look it up).
05:16 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, 1kV sounds about right
05:16 Monkeh|Lap Resistance probably can't be guaranteed to be over around 1M.
05:16 tonsofpcs oh, and I have odd-shaped feet.  If I can find safety footware, anyone can.
05:17 Monkeh|Lap I have wide feet in two different sizes.
05:17 Monkeh|Lap Thankfully, I buy good boots and they fit without me needing to buy two pairs.
05:17 tonsofpcs oo, they make my boots in goretex+composite-toe now :D
05:17 Monkeh|Lap But as I recall, your standards call for 50J or 75J impact rating on the toes.
05:17 Monkeh|Lap Ours call for 200J.
05:18 tonsofpcs when buying safety wear, the label tells you what it's rated.  You should know what you need.  If not, you probably aren't qualified to make that purchasing decision.
05:18 tonsofpcs that goes for any safety wear.
05:18 Monkeh|Lap And I've got steel soles, shock absorbers, proper ankle support.. Is nice.
05:19 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Yes, I know that, I'm just saying: To be called safety footwear (with steel toes, anyway), they _must_ be rated for at least 200J impact.
05:19 tonsofpcs oh, idk that any of my boots are called "safety footwear"
05:19 tonsofpcs they have tags on them (both on the shelf in the store and on them when you get them) that tell you the specs.
05:19 Monkeh|Lap Being safety footwear also excludes them from VAT, which is nice.
05:19 tonsofpcs this one I just found says "Composite toe rated ASTM F2413-11 M I/75 C/75 EH. "
05:20 Monkeh|Lap And they come with all the details about friction coefficient etc, which is neat.
05:20 tonsofpcs I'm guessing I is impact and C is compression?
05:20 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Impact and crush, 75J, I assume.
05:20 tonsofpcs crush, ah
05:20 Monkeh|Lap Crush/compression
05:20 Monkeh|Lap Same thing.
05:20 Monkeh|Lap Static weight.
05:20 tonsofpcs right
05:21 Monkeh|Lap You can park a car or even a small tank (yes, seriously. Not that I'm volunteering.) on my boots.
05:21 tonsofpcs not sure what the M means; loading F2413 now
05:21 tonsofpcs I've had a car run over my steel toes.
05:21 tonsofpcs (no, not on purpose)
05:21 Monkeh|Lap Actually, I know one series of armoured vehicles you can park on my boots with me in them.
05:22 tonsofpcs they armour the Smart FourTwos?!
05:22 Monkeh|Lap heh
05:22 Monkeh|Lap Something like that
05:22 tonsofpcs (because you could probably park those on your feet without boots)
05:22 Monkeh|Lap The CVR(T) series.
05:22 Monkeh|Lap Less ground pressure per square inch than the average grown man.
05:23 Monkeh|Lap Now, they weigh 7 tonnes or more.
05:23 tehdark45 Smart cars are a joke
05:23 tonsofpcs no, the joke is the vending machine they come from.
05:23 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: It uh, means designed for a man.
05:24 Monkeh|Lap And apparently that's in foot-pounds, not joules.

05:28 tonsofpcs (top-right)
05:28 Monkeh|Lap Wow, they have a million and one variations.
05:28 Monkeh|Lap And goddamn are those pricy.
05:28 tonsofpcs they are?
05:29 tonsofpcs oh, the gore-tex ones are
05:29 tonsofpcs yea
05:29 Monkeh|Lap $180? I've never spent over $100 on safety boots.
05:29 tonsofpcs the ones I have aren't gore-tex or composite toe.
05:30 tonsofpcs really?  $100 = 60 pounds sterling btw.
05:30 Monkeh|Lap My last composite pair were about $40, they lasted me two and a half years before I decided to replace them.
05:30 Monkeh|Lap Yes, I know, I just converted it.
05:30 tonsofpcs yea, shoes cost money here apparently.
05:30 tonsofpcs because my sneakers cost mroe than that.

05:31 Monkeh|Lap Bear in mind I have: One pair of heavy duty boots, one pair of boots without steel midsoles (for driving), one pair of fully armoured wellies (invaluable), and a pair of safety shoes (those I had to pay VAT on)
05:31 Toastdude joined #thegeekgroup
05:31 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, sneakers would cost me that sort of money over here too.. Which is why I don't buy that crap.
05:31 Monkeh|Lap Proper safety footwear lasts longer and costs less..
05:31 tonsofpcs I'm not sure where I would buy pull-overs...
05:32 Monkeh|Lap What, the wellies?
05:33 tonsofpcs I'm not sure what exactly you call wellingtons.  I mean the pull-over electrical insulation boots that linesmen wear
05:33 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: These are not dissimilar to my midsole-less boots (note: I'm far from size 7..): http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-recip-waterproof-safety-boots-black-7/74561#

05:34 Monkeh|Lap They're not insulating (I think they're actually anti-static rated.. if not specifically, effectively, the rubber contains graphite)
05:34 Monkeh|Lap Aha, actually, there's the exact pair I have: http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-nailer-safety-boots-black-size-7/56258

05:38 * Monkeh|Lap digs out ISO EN 20345
05:38 tonsofpcs see, dewalt sells similar boots to the US but onlly lists them with the same ASTM # as I quoted above.  Now, I know when I buy my boots they have a tag on them that says they meet the ASTM spec but they also have a 'tested to' tag that has a real number, so I'm betting that for marketing they say it meets ASTM ####-## 75 ft-lbs but they probably make the same thing for both markets.
05:38 Monkeh|Lap Possible
05:38 tonsofpcs since a goverment contract or bid spec would say "Must meet or exceed ASTM ####-##"
05:39 tehdark45 its a toast
05:39 tonsofpcs and if it didn't say that on the sheet, no one would look further.
05:39 * Monkeh|Lap logs into the BSI via his lovely free library
05:40 tonsofpcs also, I have no clue what "size 07" is.
05:40 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Interesting. anti-static boots must be between 100k and 1M.
05:40 Monkeh|Lap We have different sizes.
05:40 Monkeh|Lap Mine is.. not 7.
05:40 tonsofpcs right
05:40 tonsofpcs mine is ~12
05:40 tonsofpcs but my 12 doesn't line up with your 12.
05:40 Monkeh|Lap I think mine works out as a 13 or 14 for you guys, let me check
05:40 tonsofpcs I forget how far off they are.  1 or 1.5 iirc
05:41 tonsofpcs my shoes say what they are in UK on the inside... but they're over there ^^
05:41 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, 13 would be about right.
05:41 Monkeh|Lap I need the width
05:41 tonsofpcs ditto, but when I get safety boots I get them proper-size all the way around.
05:42 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, you can't really get custom sizes over here, but I fit in a pair of 12s about right usually.
05:42 tonsofpcs it helps that I buy my boots at a proper store that stocks pretty much everything (you can do that when you're 10 miles outside manhattan)
05:43 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Compression works out as 2500kg (3300lb)
05:43 Monkeh|Lap And 200J is, apparently, about the same as 20kg from 10m.
05:43 Monkeh|Lap So.. yeah, they're good caps, those.
05:43 tonsofpcs like, one of the problems I have with living where I do now is I can't just run to the store and get whatever I want.  When I lived near the city, if I needed a part I went out and picked it up.  The population was dense enough and needs diverse enough that stores could carry random things as courtesy items and not take a loss, so they did.
05:44 tonsofpcs (they still do, I just don't live there anymore)
05:44 tonsofpcs so 75/I 75/C is roughly equivilant to 200J?
05:44 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: No, 75/I is 100J.
05:44 tonsofpcs which are you talking about tthen?
05:45 Monkeh|Lap Compression is C
05:45 Monkeh|Lap iirc that works out at around 11kN (vs 15kN minimum spec for ISO EN 30345)
05:46 tonsofpcs http://www.dewalt.com/tools/safety-products-work-boots-soft-toe-d64092.aspx <> http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-hammer-safety-boots-brown-size-12/33467

05:47 Monkeh|Lap And no, not the same boot, yours does not specify a toecap
05:47 tonsofpcs $85
05:48 tonsofpcs oh, whoops, wrong tab open
05:49 Monkeh|Lap Over there, it's a soft-toe insulated boot, over here, it's a composite toecapped boot with no insulation rating.
05:50 Monkeh|Lap Hmm, electrical requirements are in a seperate standard.
05:50 tonsofpcs their website sucks btw.
05:50 tonsofpcs (DeWalt)
05:50 Monkeh|Lap Yes, it does
05:50 Monkeh|Lap Try looking up holesaws.
05:50 Monkeh|Lap With their weird, confusing partnumbers
05:51 Monkeh|Lap (think 1141 being 40mm and 1140 being 41mm)
05:51 tonsofpcs I have a solution to that.
05:51 tonsofpcs well, note the name of those boots.
05:51 Monkeh|Lap And no, that's not just a random example (although I made up the part numbers, the precise reversal of 40 and 41mm holesaws is real)

05:56 tonsofpcs see, we just make a giant standard  (ASTM F2413) and update it every few years (-05, -11) and everything is in it somewhere.  Good luck getting a copy :)
05:56 tonsofpcs mind you, 90% of our standard is probably a direct quote of your standards, just all on one page..

08:03 Electricguy got the Cerwin Vegas in here now :)
08:03 Electricguy and the class A is heating up
08:07 Electricguy takes a while for it to heat up with these heat sinks..
08:07 Electricguy lot of mass in them
08:08 killakee :)
08:08 Electricguy but the bonus is, it's more stable against rapid temp changes
08:08 Experimentonomen g'mornin
08:08 Electricguy morning
08:08 killakee morning
08:09 Experimentonomen those heatsinks looks a bit like segments from one of them tunnels
08:09 Electricguy myeah
08:09 Electricguy but they come from an OLD UPS
08:10 Electricguy they are supposed to be flipped 90 degrees so they stand up
08:10 Experimentonomen and i think their more efficient than my heatsinks as their smaller and still runs cooler at the same bias current at double the voltage
08:10 Electricguy but they are pretty useful for this kind of installation..
08:10 Electricguy myeah maybe
08:11 Electricguy they got small "ribs" on the fins to increase the surface area too
08:11 Experimentonomen my class A u can barely touch after 5-10 minutes at 2.4A and 15.8V
08:11 Electricguy hehe oki
08:11 Electricguy same with mine.. but at 2.2A and 24V
08:11 Experimentonomen i estimate it to around 75-85deg C
08:12 Electricguy oki
08:13 Electricguy myeah.. about the same for me after an hour or so
08:13 Electricguy dang. these Cerwin Vegas are pretty loud on the class A :P
08:13 Electricguy but they are H.E.D model speakers
08:14 Electricguy (High Energy Design)
08:14 Electricguy IE. plays very loud with little power
08:16 Experimentonomen then imagine what the biiig version is gonna be like ;)
08:16 Electricguy good god XD
08:17 Electricguy these Cerwin Vegas and the 2x60Watt amp we got in the garage is insane.. this like a small PA system.. thats about the volume :P
08:17 Electricguy our neighbors use to complain about it.. lol
08:25 Experimentonomen *DUNK**DUNK**DUNK**DUNK* :P
08:25 Electricguy DAMN it's loud :P
08:25 Electricguy the amp gotta give around 4Watts or something

08:28 Electricguy i wonder if low ESR caps on the output gives any power gain
08:31 Experimentonomen with 25V, my sim shows over 20 watts peak, so your amp may well put out around 8-10W RMS
08:31 Experimentonomen in 4 ohms
08:31 Electricguy nice
08:32 Electricguy it plays damn loud with these speakers :P
08:33 Electricguy impressive how well it does really!
08:33 Experimentonomen and around 4 watts in 2 ohms
08:33 Electricguy the speakers make a LOT of difference at these low power ratings
08:34 Experimentonomen those CV HED speakers are likely 90+ dB/1w/1M
08:34 Electricguy yeah
08:35 Electricguy they play WAAY louder than my other speakers. lol
08:37 Experimentonomen btw do you also need up to 10V input to get the amp up to volume ?
08:37 Electricguy nope
08:37 Experimentonomen hm
08:37 Electricguy i got a darlington couple on the power transistor and then just my ipod
08:39 Electricguy got a BU2520 as amp transistor and a BD139 as darlington stage
08:39 Experimentonomen did you make the upper or lower transistor the audio handler ?
08:39 Electricguy upper or lower?
08:40 Electricguy it's based on this http://esr.se/artiklar/elektronik/Klass%20A%20amp.pdf
08:40 Electricguy but with your current source instead of collector resistor
08:40 Experimentonomen oki
08:40 Electricguy and then a darlington stage on the base
08:40 Electricguy and some lower component values
08:49 Experimentonomen hm in simulation it works much better with the top transistor as the audio handler and the bottom one as the current source when using npn devices
08:50 Electricguy weird

09:05 Experimentonomen as it has no voltage gain in that config
09:06 Electricguy ah, right
09:07 Experimentonomen but rigging up a opamp gain stage is quick on a breadboard
09:07 Electricguy yeah
09:07 Electricguy i even got a couple laying around

09:08 Experimentonomen the most hated opamp of all time :P
09:08 Electricguy lol yeah :P
09:14 Electricguy the amp seems a bit more powerful with the current source
09:14 Electricguy maybe the current source is more stable than the resistors
09:15 Experimentonomen dunno
09:19 Experimentonomen and according to sim, u actually wanna be slightly above half the supply voltage on the output for most symmetrical clipping
09:20 Experimentonomen otherwise it hits 0V before it kits the 25V
09:21 Electricguy hehe okey

14:17 Hackbat umm not sure?
14:18 yNos i wonder if it keeps a listing of what device files are supposed to be attached to what somewhere in /etc?
14:18 yNos helper files of some sort.
14:19 Hackbat :\
14:19 Hackbat aaaand I broke the server
14:20 Seroster Ql, inductive reactance.... A 230v coil at 5.2amps gives the VAr... Ql=Ul*I  1196var.   Anyone mind checking that answer? =P
14:20 yNos broke the server?
14:21 yNos external modems ftw

14:27 Yrouel how are called the transformers used to generate the spark to lit a gas stove?
14:28 Yrouel oh got it ignition transformers
14:28 yNos ours is a piezo element.
14:38 Hackbat I'll have to work on that modem later
14:40 eadthem so if using a MOT for a spot or arc welder  dose it make sense to remove the shunts?
14:40 eadthem i mean i know that will increase the efficancy and the output current
14:41 eadthem as well as decrease the current limiting   thus why im not sure
15:04 Yrouel eadthem assuming that you know the dangers of MOTs I'd say try first the welder with the shints in place
15:04 Yrouel and see how it performs
15:04 Yrouel if you are satisfied leave them
15:04 Yrouel if not knock them out
15:04 eadthem ya im aware of the dangers of mots
15:04 Yrouel shunts*
15:04 eadthem that makes the most sense
15:05 Yrouel sometimes is just easy to check in practice instead of reading the theory
15:06 JustoStyle joined #thegeekgroup
15:07 eadthem mmmm just smoked my ceramic balist resistor
15:08 eadthem im thinking i can get 2V out   per a mot
15:09 eadthem at 500-600 amps
15:09 Yrouel if I'm not wrong a shorted mot can act as ballast
15:09 eadthem witch is way more than any winding will handle
15:10 Yrouel oh I see
15:11 eadthem it shuld make a nice spot welder but im not convenced i will beable to make a arc welder out of it  ile need like 8 of them or something
15:11 eadthem the ballist reisstor is on the mains side
15:11 eadthem i had a open 1 turn on it mesuring voltage   the magnitising current was 1 to 1.3 amps  at 120V
15:12 eadthem so said 10 ohm resistor was dropping 13W
15:13 eadthem ya Yrouel   the secondary is gon
15:13 eadthem its been defanged for the most part
15:14 Yrouel well at least mots are cheap if you recover them from trashed micowave ovens
15:14 eadthem ok   it was pulling 3 amps
15:15 eadthem so now im wondering   how many of those amps are from the shunts
15:16 eadthem in many ways the UPS 900 transformer is better for welding than this
15:16 eadthem the parastic current is way high
15:18 Yrouel I'm realatively new to HV from what I've understood mots are used not really because they fit the purpose (except powering magnetrons) but because they come free or almost free from local dumpsters and in quantity
15:19 Yrouel so if magick smoke is released one can simply replace them
15:19 eadthem ya at 110V it draws 3A  no load
15:19 eadthem thats insane
15:22 Yrouel uhm just a curiosity are mots generally dual standard 110/220V?
15:22 eadthem no
15:22 eadthem if it was it would be ideal
15:23 eadthem i could run it at 120V on the 240V winding
15:23 eadthem cut the qusequent current in 1/2   double the output voltage
15:23 SparkyProjects joined #thegeekgroup
15:23 eadthem would solve a lot of issues
15:36 eadthem removing the shunt had little effect on reduceing the current
15:37 eadthem ie qusequent current
15:37 eadthem ive read ina  couple places its due to saturation

15:40 wannabe1987 computer rebooted overnight :(
15:41 Damianz I probably should reboot my laptop but I need to take it to work and update it first.
15:41 wannabe1987 i had one unsaved note(pad document)
15:42 Damianz Hate it when that happens
15:42 Damianz Browser tabs are the worst
15:42 Yrouel I have activated autosave
15:42 wannabe1987 i dont see,m to lose thoseany more
15:42 Damianz Vim will autosave for me but Textmate doesn't which is the only half decent gui editor on mac.
15:43 Yrouel uhm on mac on lion is sort of build in
15:44 Yrouel I oh apparently the dev doesn't care much
15:44 wannabe1987 o it wasn't code.  just notes for me, phone numbers from my vmail to call, addresses etc
15:44 Damianz Not running lion as I mean to format it back to linux at some point... only running osx because it had a hdd replaced.
15:45 Yrouel oh
15:45 Yrouel poor mac
15:45 Yrouel lol
15:46 Damianz Osx is plain suckage without a package manager :(
15:47 eadthem ya this mot saturates at about 90V
15:48 Yrouel yeah a package manager is everything you need in an os totally the main component
15:48 Yrouel almost more important thatn the kernel
15:48 Yrouel ...
15:49 Damianz For a general gui env on a general use throwaround laptop the kernel is insignificant, the fact it pains me to install anything which hinders development of stuff which could be solved with a package manager is what matters.
15:50 Damianz I don't even run the kernel rc releases on this machine, do on my desktop though with a more custom compile.
15:50 Yrouel well have you tried macports or fink or the new brew?
15:50 Yrouel for non-apps (I mean .app) I use macports
15:50 Yrouel and it works fine at least for me
15:52 Damianz I'm using brew and ports atm, both lack packages I need and some have an issue where it tries to compile for ppc then fails due to the lack of support in the compiler because apple removed it... osx just doesn't work for my main needs as everything else I touch is linux, unix or sol based.
15:52 Yrouel oh wait
15:52 Yrouel you have a ppc mac?
15:53 Yrouel Damianz os x is unix btw...
15:53 Damianz Nah it's intel, the configure stuff is just screwed. I can make it compiled if I foce the compile arch in cflags.
15:53 Yrouel what port?
15:53 Seroster mY BUM HURTS.
15:54 Yrouel Damianz usually ports are patchet to follow the universal option and by default are build only for the architecture you are compiling on
15:54 Yrouel patched*
15:54 HighMan Seroster, why are you bummmed out?
15:54 Seroster I stoop up while being under a big piece of stone.
15:54 Seroster stood*
15:55 Yrouel Damianz if you file a ticket there is a chance that'll be fixed pretty soon
15:55 HighMan Seroster, What does bum mean? Ass?
15:55 wannabe1987 ...
15:55 Yrouel it can be even easier to fix it yourself and submit also the patch
15:55 Yrouel I've done it sometimes
15:55 HighMan lol
15:55 Damianz Yeah but it doesn't, as I don't keep this thing updated or clean in any way it's just going to get re-installed once I copy all my media off :D
15:55 wannabe1987 seriously high?
15:55 HighMan I thought "bum" meant ass.....
15:55 HighMan .define bum
15:55 BotSteve bum — noun: 1. The buttocks, 2. (UK, Ireland, Aust, New Zealand, informal) (rare, Canada, US) The anus — verb: 1. (UK, transitive, colloquial) to sodomize; to engage in anal sex — adjective: 1. Of poor quality or highly undesirable, 2. Unfair
15:55 wannabe1987 its the word that grandmas use to be polite
15:56 wannabe1987 it does
15:56 Yrouel Damianz oh well so basically you just prefer to stick to what you know
15:56 Yrouel well whatever suit you is fine anyway
15:56 Damianz Indeed.
15:56 HighMan I'm just going to. Merp.
15:57 Damianz I wish I could get fedora to run smoothly on this thing but it breaks too much D:
15:57 Yrouel Damianz so isn't os x that sucks, or better, it sucks for you
15:57 Yrouel Damianz I like mint
15:58 Damianz For the general user who wants to rely on dmg's and shell out 20$ for random apps, not notice when apple decide to charge for things randomly then sure it's awesome... I want a bit more flex to my os.
15:58 HighMan Boot Camp Damianz.
15:58 Yrouel boot camp is just a partition assistant
15:59 Yrouel and it's designed mostly for windows
15:59 Damianz Hmm used mint for a while, rocking a mix of ubuntu, fedora, gentoo and osx desktop wise at the moment. It's nice to be on RHEL based stuff when you have to deal with RHEL all day.
15:59 Yrouel he can install linux as it was on a normal pc
15:59 HighMan But you can run Linux, Windows and OSX Too right?
15:59 Yrouel however the problem is the support
15:59 HighMan True ^
15:59 Damianz Don't even mention boot camp... apples firmware not a bios bios is really annoying.
15:59 Yrouel HighMan yeah triple boot is possible
15:59 HighMan lol
15:59 HighMan I booted osx on a pc before. It sucks.
16:00 Yrouel linux should support efi natively...
16:00 Yrouel I don't know how well though
16:00 HighMan Damn kext.s
16:00 Yrouel (it's always the same, on paper should work in practice doesn't)
16:00 Damianz I've not tried it recently, was running a custom bootloader before but it would be nice.
16:00 Yrouel HighMan uhm hackintosh with random hardware can be really annoying
16:01 Yrouel but if you select the components
16:01 Yrouel os x mostly runs fine enough
16:01 HighMan Yes. Especially on laptops -_-
16:01 Damianz Hackintosh vms are fun
16:01 Damianz :D
16:02 HighMan I had to go from Virtual Machine, Then from dmg in virtual machine to usb flash drive, then install osx like 30 times. I just gave up afterwords.
16:02 Damianz I really should rsync my raw images over to my storage server as I'm thinking about re-installing this thing now lol
16:03 Yrouel I had to install windows 7 here
16:03 Yrouel after I removed a lot of crap it works decently
16:03 Yrouel but I use it only to play games so...
16:03 HighMan I also learned to do a "chkdsk" if windows asks for it.
16:04 HighMan I screwed up my MFT.... Had to restore HD, recover files and do a restore install. It sucked.
16:04 Yrouel I literally spent more time to uninstall or disable things than to install it in the first place
16:04 Yrouel and was a retail
16:04 HighMan XD
16:05 HighMan Here is a program you should use on windows to remove shit software. "Pc Decrapifier"
16:05 HighMan Select what you need to remove, and it'll run the uninstallers for you. Or you can run "Iobit Uninstaller" does the same, but has a "Deep Scan" ability
16:05 Yrouel nah is microsoft that should add some option to do a really minimal install, and I mean REALLY minimal like with themes disabled and such
16:06 HighMan Go make a custom Windows 7 install :P
16:07 Yrouel well fortunately until bioshock infinite will be released I haven't the necessity to boot windows
16:07 HighMan lol
16:07 Yrouel well there is the next DLC for ME3 first...
16:07 HighMan Have fun with that :P
16:09 HighMan I'm playing pokemon lol
16:10 Yrouel lol

16:26 Yrouel uhm pole transformers to provide HV are simply connected backwards?
16:29 killakee Yrouel: sometimes
16:29 killakee Yrouel: are you thinking abuote doing this ?
16:29 Yrouel nope
16:30 Yrouel just curious don't worry
16:30 killakee Yrouel: ok.. good ..
16:30 killakee :)
16:30 * Damianz connects Yrouel out of phase and goes to find food
16:30 Yrouel lol
16:31 killakee hehe
16:31 SparkyProjects Pole transformers are connected 'backwards' to produce high voltage, that's what TGG use for Gemini etc
16:32 Yrouel I'd like to have some of that oil though
16:32 SparkyProjects a transformer can be connected either way to provide a step up or step down
16:32 Yrouel SparkyProjects thanks :)
16:32 Yrouel SparkyProjects yeah I knew that but I though that maybe they implemented some protection
16:32 Damianz Or if you're feeling bored, connect two backwards to each other and just generate heat!
16:33 Yrouel Damianz well in the winter....
16:34 tonsofpcs Damianz: and loss...
16:34 SparkyProjects Pole transformers usually have external protection (fuses)
16:34 SparkyProjects There are some that have internal protection for overcurrent, but that will still work if transformers are reversed
16:34 killakee Yrouel: there are some balast thing
16:35 killakee :)
16:36 Damianz tonsofpcs: Loss? Energy is never just lost (or free), refer back to heat!
16:36 Damianz I want some free energy though :(
16:37 tonsofpcs Yrouel: btw, MS does offer the option to do a 100% customized install.  They have for some time.  I'm not sure what they call it these days...
16:37 tonsofpcs Damianz: right, there's loss in the electrical system and a gain in the thermal system.
16:37 Damianz sysprep style?
16:37 Yrouel tonsofpcs uhm they had but I haven't found it for 7 professional
16:38 SparkyProjects Don't foret magnetic, capacitive and resistive 'losses'
16:38 Yrouel I hink they also removed the thing with sysoc.inf by with you could unhide some components to be able to remove them

16:44 tonsofpcs Damianz: lunches.
16:44 Damianz Hmm I was thinking chicken stir fry with noodles and a light soy sauce.
16:45 Damianz Or I could just order pizza :D
16:45 tonsofpcs hmmm
16:45 tonsofpcs I don't have noodles or chicken.  I do have carrots and string beans (and all sorts of crazy stir fry stuffs)...
16:45 Damianz I stockpile chicken and noodles =/ Have like 25 breasts in the freezer
16:46 Yrouel I planned kebap here
16:46 * tonsofpcs wonders who is furtehr, Damianz or Yrouel
16:46 tonsofpcs *farther
16:47 * Damianz is Damian Z, mostly because too many people steal Damian as a nick
16:47 tonsofpcs Damianz: why breasts? did you buy 25 chickens and tear off the wings?
16:47 Yrouel Damianz where are you from?
16:47 * tonsofpcs is Eric, mostly because that's the name he was given ;)
16:47 Damianz Nah, I go to like Aldi and buy 10 at a time.
16:47 Damianz Yrouel: My mommy
16:47 Yrouel haha
16:48 tonsofpcs Damianz: donde estas?
16:48 Damianz Also, England but the first answer was more funny.
16:48 tonsofpcs it's more funny if we knew "england" first, as then we would say it in the kid's voice from that Doctor Who episode.
16:48 Yrouel so I think you are a bit close to the usa
16:48 tonsofpcs yea, Damianz is closer.
16:48 Damianz :D
16:48 tonsofpcs that means he gets to bring me lunch :D
16:49 tonsofpcs or, ya know, I could go cook some pasta.  I have some tortellini and ravioli from Wegmans....
16:49 Damianz Sure, just sort a visa out ;)
16:49 Yrouel tonsofpcs yay for italian cuisine :D
16:49 tonsofpcs sure, up to volunteer where I work?  I'm pretty sure you can get a visa to volunteer for a non-profit relatively quickly.
16:50 Damianz 200GB in ~/Projects, probably should find a cable as wifi is going to take a while to sync :(
16:50 tonsofpcs alternatively, volunteer @ TGG
16:50 tonsofpcs that depends on your wifi and your cable, of course :-p
16:50 Damianz I didn't think volunteering made much difference for visas tbh
16:50 Damianz Well gig wired full duplex > G wifi
16:51 tonsofpcs that depends on if you're running Windows and using SMB or not ;-p

16:52 tonsofpcs so is Aldi a discount market in the UK too?
16:52 Damianz Rsync so there isn't a massive overhad :) And yeah, pretty sure Aldi is more of Europe not sure about the US.
16:53 tonsofpcs Damianz: we have one like 2 miles from here... just wondering if they're a discount market there like they are here or if they're more of a full on supermarket
16:54 Damianz They are kinda a supermarket, kinda split betwean food, random hardware and drinks. Not like other supermarkets we have though.
16:54 tonsofpcs yea, ok, so it's the same thing.
16:56 * tonsofpcs toasts an english muffin

17:00 Yrouel it seems like che chips/crisp/fries thing

17:07 tonsofpcs goat cheese tortellini, beef tortellini, or 3cheese and spinach ravioli? hmmm....
17:07 SparkyProjects Here's a tip tonsofpcs, after using a pot, fill it with water, will be easier to clean
17:08 Yrouel tonsofpcs ravioli
17:08 tonsofpcs SparkyProjects: right.  Again, these are not cleaned because they were used when I was sick.  They were emptied/rinsed, just not scrubbed clean.
17:09 Yrouel but generally speaking after the pot is dry the germs won't survive for much time
17:09 SparkyProjects Water above 40C will kill most germs youu're likely to spread (that's why we had all sorts of safety devices/alarms on the lab hot rooms (37C)
17:10 Yrouel there are exceptions obviously
17:10 Sgt_Lemming generally anything that survives past 40°c is so specialised it's little to no risk to a person

18:35 Damianz Well, new right now. Old landlord comes next month.
18:36 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: I like the skids. 99% useless on almost all materials. :D
18:36 Damianz Silly bank holidays, they give you time off when you can't do anything because everywhere is closed!
18:36 Katemonster the skids are for pulling it through snow; notice that they are supposed to be rotated 90deg back and the weapon is supposed to sit on an actual bipod
18:36 Monkeh|Lap Ahh.
18:36 Katemonster fun fact: the gun ejects straight down, and brass for it is *very expensive*, so a lot of owners replace the standard gasblock with a new one with no gas port, effectively turning the gun into a manual bolt action.  that way the brass isn't smacked hard against the ground and dented.
18:37 Monkeh|Lap Straight down makes sense.
18:37 * Cprossu ducks head in, sees weirdness, leaves

18:39 Monkeh|Lap Ding
18:39 Monkeh|Lap Right on the money
18:40 Katemonster :D
18:40 Damianz Looks like it needs a polish
18:40 Monkeh|Lap Polish?!
18:40 Monkeh|Lap It's a gun, not a trophy.
18:40 Katemonster damianz, if you polished that gun, every classic firearm collector in the world would be out for your head.
18:40 Damianz It would look nice polished :D
18:40 Monkeh|Lap It really wouldn't
18:41 Sgt_Lemming bleh
18:41 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: One of the few handguns I can own in working condition.
18:41 Sgt_Lemming eating something for the first time in 16 hours, hoping I don't puke again
18:41 Katemonster more specifically, it would look kind of nice stripped, lightly polished, and reblued.  but you'd also ruin the collector's value of an early 1911 that, what, British lend-lease service?  I forget why they made those
18:42 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: They made them because the RAF and RN didn't want .45ACP, basically, but they needed more punch than .32.
18:42 Monkeh|Lap And they didn't like the Webley.
18:42 Monkeh|Lap So they ended up with .455 1911s.
18:42 Katemonster no one likes the Webley.
18:42 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: It's a bit of an ugly duckling isn't it?
18:43 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: They kinda got fed up with dumping six .32s from a revolver into someone and having it not stop them. :)
18:43 Katemonster it really is.  i've also heard some not-nice things about its durability... although they are rare enough (on this side of the pond at least) that I never hear much about them at all.
18:43 Monkeh|Lap They're pretty rare over here
18:44 Monkeh|Lap I think most of them were destroyed in the 90s (grr, argh.)
18:44 Monkeh|Lap People didn't want the hassle of keeping them, and the Police and government didn't give a shit, unwanted firearm? Melt it.
18:44 Katemonster that sounds like the UK, yes.
18:45 Monkeh|Lap It's stupid.
18:45 Monkeh|Lap And shooting in general is dying out unless it's needed (see: farmers.) because people don't want the hassle or risk of owning a firearm.
18:46 Monkeh|Lap Or can't because the cops have a file on them (even if it says precisely nothing: One little mistake and you can't have a gun.)
18:46 Monkeh|Lap Even if it was 30 years ago and nothing more than a drunk fight with a mate, no, sorry, you can't have a firearm.
18:46 Seroster electricguy, Experimentonomen , googla effekttriangel och scrolla till sida tre. Lol.
18:47 Monkeh|Lap And one mistake with a firearm of any kind and that's you screwed.

18:47 Katemonster sorry, that ain't my field of expertise.  :P
18:48 Monkeh|Lap And if you can smuggle the pristine Enfield No.4 Mk.1* I know the location of with me, that'd be great.
18:48 Monkeh|Lap Because those be nice rifles.
18:48 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: Knowledge check: Difference between Mk I and Mk I*?
18:49 Katemonster ...on what gun?  the revolver?
18:49 Monkeh|Lap Rifle.
18:49 Monkeh|Lap Lee-Enfield No 4
18:49 Katemonster don't remember.  I owned a Mk.I and a Mk.II, and the only significant difference there was mounting the trigger to the receiver on the Mk.II rather than on the trigger guard plate
18:50 Katemonster the Mk.II also had a third sling swivel right in front of the magazine.  it got in the way a lot.
18:51 Monkeh|Lap Other than the Mk I* being from NA (Long Branch in Canada is one place to have made it)
18:51 Monkeh|Lap They changed the magazine catch
18:51 Monkeh|Lap (and boy is it a lot nicer than the one on the Mk I)
18:51 Katemonster ah.  that's what I thought, that the * was canadian
18:51 Monkeh|Lap It was made in the US, too
18:51 Monkeh|Lap But most of the ones I've seen are Canadian
18:51 Katemonster i've never seen a Lee made in the US  :/
18:52 Monkeh|Lap They were made
18:52 Katemonster there is an "American Enfield" but from my cursory examination it had more in common with the Mauser design than the Lee
18:52 Katemonster Remington 1917 or something like that
18:53 Monkeh|Lap "Used by units of the American Expeditionary Force attached to British and Australian units during the First World War.[113][114] No.4 MkI* rifles manufactured by Savage-Stevens Firearms under Lend-Lease for the British and Commonwealth forces during WWII."

18:58 Monkeh|Lap Indeed
18:59 Yrouel so what about railguns?
18:59 Monkeh|Lap Well, I don't think he'll be back any time soon.
18:59 Monkeh|Lap Yrouel: Now that's an entirely different thing
18:59 Yrouel I know
18:59 Monkeh|Lap (and really goddamn cool, too)
19:00 Yrouel but maybe a little bit more appropriate for the channel
19:00 Monkeh|Lap Well, maybe not.
19:00 Monkeh|Lap The idea of half the guys here building one scares me. :P
19:00 Katemonster definitely more appropriate for the channel, i think.

19:02 Yrouel too bad that are still very big
19:02 Monkeh|Lap Yrouel: Funny thing is, _we_ built the gun the yanks were banging on about the other year :P
19:03 Yrouel we who?
19:04 Sgt_Lemming Yrouel, biggest problem with railguns is that they basically destroy their own barrels in the process of their firing
19:04 Monkeh|Lap Yrouel: You figure it out :P
19:04 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: I know of one way to possibly get that gun to the states.
19:04 Monkeh|Lap Sgt_Lemming: Not to mention everything around them.
19:04 Sgt_Lemming err, not from what I know Monkeh
19:04 Yrouel oh sweden
19:04 Yrouel :D
19:05 Monkeh|Lap Sgt_Lemming: Have you seen the videos of railgun test shots?
19:05 tonsofpcs It may or may not involve lying to an ambassador...
19:05 Sgt_Lemming yes
19:05 Sgt_Lemming they have a large muzzle blast, show me a big gun that doesn't?
19:05 Monkeh|Lap Sgt_Lemming: Somewhat larger than the average cannon.
19:05 Monkeh|Lap Not to mention the plasma wake.
19:06 Monkeh|Lap Long way to go before these things are ready for real use
19:07 Yrouel anyway
19:08 Yrouel what would be the real advantage of a coilgun instead of a classic cannon?
19:08 Yrouel in a battlefield for example
19:08 tonsofpcs mobility?
19:09 Yrouel railgun pardon
19:09 Sgt_Lemming railgun != coilgun
19:09 Yrouel yeah
19:09 Sgt_Lemming they are two seperate things
19:09 Yrouel I meant railgun
19:09 Yrouel sorry
19:10 Sgt_Lemming big advantage is the sheer amount of energy able to be imparted to the projectile
19:11 Sgt_Lemming hypersonic (greater than Mach 5) ammo is entirely possible with a railgun
19:11 Sgt_Lemming and there have already been a few test shots done at mach 7
19:12 Yrouel with a mini nuclear reactor to power the gun right?
19:12 Yrouel :P
19:12 Sgt_Lemming power and barrel wear are the two main issues with railguns
19:13 Yrouel uhm
19:14 Yrouel well I was thinking that if we (as manking) are able to make the alloys from which the blades of jet enines are made maybe we can find some material to build the barrel
19:14 Yrouel engines*
19:14 Sgt_Lemming the problem is the barrel has to be highly conductive
19:14 Monkeh Sgt_Lemming: Well, you can use massive fuckoff capacitors to power a railgun from a mobile vehicle, but the rate of fire would suck

20:11 Experimentonomen *yawn*
20:12 Electricguy exp! i want to build a tube input stage on my class A.. what tube would be suitable for that?
20:14 Experimentonomen i havent dealt with alot of tubes so i'd say the classic 12AX7(ECC83), if you can live with a separate psu with atleast 150 volts
20:15 Electricguy oki
20:16 Electricguy i just realized i got a low voltage low power tube amp :P
20:16 Electricguy that VFD amp thing i made
20:16 Electricguy it can run on around 30V :P
20:16 Experimentonomen should work
20:16 Yrouel about tubes anyone tried to generate x-rays?
20:16 Electricguy i haven not
20:16 Electricguy have*
20:16 Experimentonomen me neither
20:17 Damianz I value my skin too much
20:17 Experimentonomen its dangerous without proper protective equipment
20:17 Yrouel yep I know
20:17 Experimentonomen it should never be attemted
20:18 Damianz Unless you REALLY don't like the person
20:18 Si235 joined #thegeekgroup
20:18 Yrouel if the tube is small you can encase it in lead except a window in the front
20:19 Yrouel and obviously stay beyon protective shield
20:19 Yrouel such concrete wall
20:21 Experimentonomen concrete doesent do jack squat to x-rays, they go straight through
20:21 Electricguy yeah you need lead plates
20:22 Sgt_Lemming concrete DOES stop x-rays, but it depends on the thickness and the density of the concrete
20:22 Experimentonomen and there are plenty of idiots on youtube already exposing themselves to lethal doses of radiation from playing with x-rays
20:22 Damianz Yay for gamma radiation
20:22 Yrouel anyway I was thiking at a small tube not a x-ray head
20:23 Experimentonomen myself im even reluctant to letting the detists use their x-ray thing on me
20:23 Damianz There's idiots on youtube that think taking 2 mains feeds, attaching a nst to each then joining the nsts together would make UBER POWER and wonder why it actually just blows shit up
20:26 Yrouel anyway radiation is much less scary than what people thinks
20:27 Experimentonomen there was a time when taking an x-ray at the dentist was more painful than the drill
20:27 Yrouel it must be treated respectfully and a little fear but media tend to exxarate "a bit" the stories
20:27 Yrouel exxagerate*
20:28 Damianz Low levels of radiation is generally fine.
20:28 Experimentonomen i stick to within my comfort zone, audio amplifiers, bldc motor drives and sometimes induction heating
20:28 Yrouel well for example
20:28 Yrouel Electricguy some tubes used to use thoriated electrodes
20:28 Si235 joined #thegeekgroup
20:28 Yrouel to increase performances
20:30 Experimentonomen those were typically glow discharge regulator tubes
20:30 Experimentonomen think neon  lamps, the tube equivalent to a zener diode
20:31 Experimentonomen tubes like that are clearly marked with the radioactivity symbol
20:31 Yrouel obviously
20:31 Experimentonomen but just like fire alarms, the level of radioactivity is so low that it poses no threat to the human body
20:31 Yrouel precisely
20:31 Experimentonomen remember wrist watches used to have radfium and other radioactive stuff in them for visibility in the dark
20:32 Yrouel Experimentonomen yep I'm searching for some indeed
20:33 Yrouel but those were a problem for the ladies who were employed to paint them
20:33 Experimentonomen and those were worn for up to a whole persons life with no ill effects, just one x-ray shot at the dentist is many times higher exposure than a lifetime of playing with the trorium electrode tubes or wearing a wrist watch
20:33 Yrouel because they wherent correctly educated about the risks and precautions
20:33 Yrouel and used the paint also as cosmetic
20:33 Yrouel ingesting it
20:34 Yrouel Experimentonomen yea but an xray is not a total body exposure for once and dna have some recovery mechanisms
20:34 Zozo joined #thegeekgroup
20:34 Yrouel I mean dental x-ray
20:35 Experimentonomen as a matter of fact i mayu well suffer from radioation exposure from chernobyl as the clouds passed right over sweden
20:35 Experimentonomen still today theres debates on wethever wildlife meat is safe to eat
20:35 Yrouel if I remember correctly was indeed sweden to launch the alarm
20:35 * Damianz notes Experimentonomen has 4 arms
20:36 Yrouel and they though that the problem was their at first glance
20:36 Experimentonomen yes, it was i believe the Forsmark nuclear power plant that initiated the alarm
20:36 Experimentonomen the workers werent let in my the radiation detectors
20:37 Yrouel here in italy too authorities recommented to not eat vegetables or consume milk
20:37 Yrouel in that period
20:37 Yrouel but here the contamination was far less worse
20:37 Damianz Milk is horrid
20:37 Yrouel as I said before
20:37 Yrouel media tent to exxagerate such stories
20:38 Experimentonomen if im not mistyaken, i wasent even a year old when chernobyl blew up
20:38 Yrouel Damianz I don't like it either except if I mask it's flavour/smell with a ton of chocolate
20:38 Yrouel may 86
20:39 Yrouel my bad
20:39 Yrouel april 86
20:39 Yrouel 26 of april
20:39 Experimentonomen i was born in june 85 so just a month or two less than a year
20:39 Damianz Milk and anything like milk will just make me puke over you.
20:39 Yrouel I was born on may
20:40 Yrouel precisely 2 days ago in the 86
20:40 Yrouel :P
20:40 Yrouel too bad that after chernoby we voted for a referendum to ban nuclear power
20:40 Yrouel and because of that
20:41 Damianz Nuclear power is pretty safe ironically
20:41 Yrouel we had to shut down at least one brant new reactor
20:41 Yrouel brand*
20:41 Yrouel and that's why we still spend a ton of money to manage the waste and fuel rods some of which never used...
20:42 Damianz Yeah, not sure I'd want a job handling fuel rods.
20:42 Experimentonomen chernobyl blew up due to a manucaturing flaw
20:42 Yrouel no
20:43 Yrouel well yes but if they did't performed that experiment in such poor way
20:43 Yrouel the reactor would be still fine
20:43 Experimentonomen the swedisgh plants u can ram head on with a jumbojet with no ill effects
20:44 Yrouel the problem was that they wanted to see if the residual power in the turbines could provide enough power to keep the cooling system on while the diesel generators will stard
20:44 Yrouel as a bridge
20:44 Yrouel but in order to do that they manage to do a series of operations that progressively put the reactor in an unstable condition
20:45 Damianz I wonder if anyone has ever tested ramming a jumbojet into a plant.
20:45 Yrouel so when they terminated the experiment and scrammed the reactor a design flow in the control rods caused a huge spike in power output
20:45 Yrouel that blew up the thing
20:45 Yrouel flaw*
20:45 Experimentonomen the flaw was using graphite
20:46 Yrouel not really
20:46 Experimentonomen as it causes a initial boost in power
20:46 Yrouel if I remember correcly
20:46 Yrouel the rod when inserted
20:46 Yrouel at first displaced the whater which act also as moderator
20:47 Yrouel and there was a problem in a particular section of the rod not neutron absorbant
20:47 Yrouel it was a combination of factor
20:48 Yrouel both human errors and design flow
20:48 Yrouel but if the humans kept their hands in their pocket as I said before the reactor would be fine
20:48 Experimentonomen communication breakdown, one guy reduced the flow of cooling water through the core while the other pulled out all but 6 control rods
20:48 Damianz Most accidents involve human error, even if it's in design, usage or reacting to errors.
20:49 Yrouel Electricguy yep there was a switch in the turn of operators
20:49 Yrouel so the new team didn't know precisely what to keep an eye on and what was going on
20:51 Experimentonomen however the leader of the test that night said in a interview before he died thatt hat reactor should never have been online to begin with
20:51 Yrouel yeah sure

21:01 Electricguy i know
21:01 Yrouel anyway someone at tgg ever tryied to make some folgorites?
21:02 tonsofpcs minimum voltage is ... 12.5?  that page has a spec sheet but I can't open it
21:02 tonsofpcs folgorites? is that the pictures that develop with folgers coffee?
21:02 Yrouel (discharge though sand in such way that the sand is melted replicating the patch of the current)

21:04 Electricguy i got a pair of PCF80 tubes too
21:04 Electricguy and a ECC88
21:04 Yrouel one way to make them I read about is to put some sand in a cylinder with 2 electrodes at the sides and connect it to an HV source (or try to capture a lightning) to force the current to pass though the sand
21:05 Yrouel non conductive cylinder
21:06 tonsofpcs glass jar.
21:06 Yrouel pvc maybe
21:07 Yrouel the glass may shatter

21:21 tonsofpcs oh, wait... hmm..
21:22 tonsofpcs 170 V is the primary, nevermind...
21:26 Seroster electricguy_, to make 150v... Cheat.
21:26 Seroster Do you need AC or DC?
21:27 Seroster If DC, a 3.135 6.25, 12.5 25, 50 or 75v xformer with a cockroft walton multiplier connected will work =)
21:34 * tonsofpcs wonders why it would be AC
21:40 SparkyProjects electricguy_: if you are using 240 mains, and have a transformer with a 120-0-120 primary, you could use it as an autotrans.
21:41 SparkyProjects oh, he left :P

22:05 Seroster SparkyProjects, phase shift of a capacitor... The voltage comes 90deg after the current, right?
22:06 Seroster Because current peaks at the initial moment of the cycle, and the voltage doesn't go up until the capacitor starts filling, eh? =P
22:34 SparkyProjects You are correct Seoster, looks  like you've been doing your homework ;)
22:35 Seroster Sure have, SparkyProjects =)
22:35 Seroster And no matter how bad I screw up on this test I'll still be the best one in my class (or, both of the two electricity classes)
22:36 SparkyProjects and it's the opposite with inductors
22:36 SparkyProjects That's how you get lead and lag
22:36 Seroster Btw, just saw a "neon sign" on ebay.   THAT'S A FLUORECENT LAMP YOU IDIOT!
22:36 Seroster And you want neither
22:37 SparkyProjects Ideally, yes
22:37 SparkyProjects That's why a topload (capacitor plate) helps with tuning the secondary of a tesla
22:39 Seroster =)
22:39 Seroster I'll put that in the margin of the exam ;)
22:39 SparkyProjects Power factor correction caps are what balances out the 'lead' of a transformer
22:41 Seroster Aye
22:41 Seroster Thing is...
22:41 Seroster PFC is stated in the datasheet of the motor.
22:41 Seroster Hence... Lol.
22:41 SparkyProjects You can buy fluro fittings with 'lead' or 'lag', or a double that has a 'lead' half and a 'lag' half
22:41 Seroster oo
22:42 SparkyProjects Take a look sometime, one choke/ballast will have a capacitor in series, the other won't
22:43 SparkyProjects mainly industrial fittings though

22:49 Experimentonomen SparkyProjects, wut kinda amp did u have in mind, big mono one or 2 or more channels ?
22:50 SparkyProjects Was thinking stereo, and into 16 ohms
22:50 SparkyProjects I know that's odd, but i only have 2 cabinets, there should be 4
22:51 Experimentonomen if its for hifi, i can recommend the douglas self blameless topology
22:52 SparkyProjects Not asking for top quality hifi, but it would be good to have something decent
22:52 SparkyProjects With the cabinets i also have motorola horn tweeters
22:52 SparkyProjects (will have to try doing the vid tomorrow)
22:53 SparkyProjects Needs to be simple, i only have a limited supply of second hand components, and don't want to spend a fortune on buying what i don't need if i can make use of what i have
22:54 SparkyProjects Or it could be into 8 ohms, and i could build cases for the spare drivers

22:55 * wannabe1987 is tired once again...
22:57 wannabe1987 i found a "pillow" but its metal and the corners hurt.....
22:57 Experimentonomen for 8-15 ohms, you could increase the rail voltages to 50-60V to get 100 watts rms
22:57 wannabe1987 audio equipment shouldn't be used to sleep on, fyi
22:57 Experimentonomen heheheheh
22:57 wannabe1987 neither should servers
22:57 Experimentonomen only cats can sleep on amplifiers ;p
22:57 SparkyProjects so is that 20 - 0 - 20 ?
22:57 wannabe1987 its a mixer
22:58 * wannabe1987 isn't a cat
22:58 Experimentonomen no 60 - 0 - 60
22:58 Experimentonomen just make sure the sum of the two rails is within the max vCE ratings of the transistors
22:59 SparkyProjects hmm, might see what components i have, thanks :)
22:59 Experimentonomen your transistors seemed to be 150V rated so 60-0-60 should be safe
22:59 SparkyProjects yep
23:00 Experimentonomen for drivers, MJE15030 and MJE15031 works good, the rest can be 2N5551 and 2N5401
23:02 Experimentonomen even MJE340/350 work as drivers even though their current ratings are a bit low, but at higher impedance loads this aint a prollem, heck i've puched amps into 2 ohms with them as drivers with no problems what so ever
23:03 SparkyProjects As i have so many, i suppose mine wouldn't be good for Q6, 10, 11
23:03 Experimentonomen and as u have 9 pairs, i'd suggest using 2-3 pairs per channel to make room for driving 4-16 ohms
23:12 Experimentonomen *yawn* ok i think i'll goto bed, nite peepz
23:13 SparkyProjects I could do that, would fill up all the space on the heatsinks and look better.
