00:27 wannabe1987 my system can't handle it....
00:29 lwq1996 what computer cant handle skype these days?
00:29 lwq1996 even my computer can and thats saying something
00:29 Katemonster FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
00:30 Monkeh|Lap wannabe1987: Sure it can.
00:30 * Katemonster spent all day looking for her soldering iron.  she found it.  in seattle.  /facepalm
00:30 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: One can never have too many soldering irons.
00:30 lwq1996 lol
00:30 Monkeh|Lap lwq1996: You think I'm kidding?
00:31 lwq1996 nope
00:31 Monkeh|Lap ~8 isn't uncommon.
00:32 wannabe1987 why was it in sattle?
00:32 wannabe1987 seattle
00:32 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: Go make her computer handle it.
00:33 JA12 Monkeh: you can change the tips you know =)
00:33 Monkeh|Lap JA12: Yep, but it's not just about the tip.
00:33 Monkeh|Lap Also that raises issues of doing it hot and storing the hot tip.
00:33 Monkeh|Lap I've changed far more than the tip on my iron.. :P

00:35 Ponko oops
00:36 wannabe1987 ...
00:36 Monkeh|Lap I cannot be pigeonholed into any of these definitions of geek and I find the attempt to do so offensive.

00:36 wannabe1987 lol
00:37 * eadthem shapes Monkeh in to a small peg
00:37 * Monkeh|Lap pokes eadthem in the eye
00:38 * Katemonster needs her soldering iron back, and a 20MHz crystal  :(
00:39 Monkeh|Lap Go get another one :P
00:39 Katemonster don't have the cash.
00:40 Katemonster my dad left to spend a week in seattle and took the soldering iron, *my* soldering iron, with him.
00:40 Katemonster grrrr
00:40 JA12 I have a decent soldering station but it's further away than seattle
00:40 eadthem why would he take your iron
00:41 Katemonster alternatively, i can do without the soldering iron if i didn't have to salvage all my other components out of existing PCBx
00:41 Katemonster he needed to fix something at my grandmother's house apparently.
00:41 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: Unfortunately the stuff I want is hard to find on random PCBs :{
00:42 Ponko lee's gone quiet
00:42 Katemonster i just need resistors and ceramic caps, other than the crystal.  i'm trying to start my PIC
00:42 Monkeh|Lap Ah
00:42 JA12 Katemonster: I've been thinking of building a soldering pot for desoldering components. that would be a handy (although a bit dangerous) tool
00:42 Monkeh|Lap JA12: A pot for desoldering?
00:42 Katemonster ?
00:44 JA12 https://www.google.fi/search?q=soldering+pot&num=30&hl=fi&newwindow=1&safe=off&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=IifAT62HK8z24QSV-_2wCQ&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CNABEPwFKAE&biw=1280&bih=889&sei=KyfAT-SjIbTc4QT_zb38CQ
00:44 BotSteve Title: soldering pot - Google-haku
00:44 JA12 ¤##"#¤ google url shortener has a verification now
00:44 Katemonster you say solder and pot in the same sentence and i think of potentiometer.
00:45 Monkeh|Lap They aren't typically used for desoldering.
00:45 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: They're pots containing molten solder.
00:45 Katemonster i figured as much.
00:45 Monkeh|Lap Small ones are often used for wire tinning.
00:46 Monkeh|Lap Strip, dip in flux, dip in solder. Done.
00:46 JA12 It's very effective in desoldering
00:46 Monkeh|Lap How?
00:46 Monkeh|Lap Unless you just mean melting all the solder and simply pulling out.
00:47 Monkeh|Lap That can work if you're not concerned about reusing the board.
00:47 Monkeh|Lap Or heat damage.
00:47 JA12 it spreads the heat quickly and effectively
00:47 JA12 you get the components out quickly

00:49 BotSteve Title: How to gain electronic parts using a soldering pot - YouTube
00:49 eadthem id use a heatgun
00:49 eadthem set it on a table and mount the board about 2-4 inches above the heatgun
00:49 eadthem then just pluck them off once it goes moten
00:50 eadthem an alternate method is heating it upside down and smacking the board on a cardboard box once moten
00:52 Katemonster most of this shit i wouldn't be able to use in my breadboard after getting them off anyway.  :(
00:53 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: You can easily enough just tack some solid wire onto the pins for that
00:53 Monkeh|Lap Just be gentle
00:53 Katemonster true.
00:53 Katemonster i have a soldering *tip*
00:53 Katemonster the thought crossed my mind to heat it up in the oven and use it that way.
00:53 Katemonster >.>
00:54 Monkeh|Lap It'd never do more than one joint at a time if you're even that lucky.
00:54 eadthem i preffer a standard 1000W dual temp heatgun for this stuff and reflow soldering
00:54 Katemonster yeah i know
00:54 wannabe1987 weee robotics!
00:54 eadthem corse if im doing real reflow i can just take it to work and put it on the belt
00:54 Katemonster i figure heating it over a flame would either fuck up the tip or contaminate the solder or both.
00:54 eadthem so long as i stick to lead free
00:55 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: Both
01:01 SparkyProjects Katemonster: Heating over a flame was done in the old days, the trick is to heat the large bit of the tip, and not the point
01:01 SparkyProjects Done it myself a few times when the iron has failed while in use
01:01 Katemonster interesting.
01:04 SparkyProjects There are gas soldering irons around that essentially do the same thing
01:06 Monkeh|Lap I have one
01:06 Monkeh|Lap It's handy.

01:08 wannabe1987 star in a jar woooo
01:09 wannabe1987 i like tours
01:09 lwq1996 lol
01:09 wannabe1987 we met some guy at radio shack and showed him the lab.....
01:09 wannabe1987 he was fixing a circuit board
01:09 lwq1996 cool
01:10 wannabe1987 mike spoke up and said that we could help possibly (we needed a fuse) and then told him a bit about tgg and tours!
01:10 wannabe1987 he had to leave for a bit, but he did come back
01:10 wannabe1987 and we saw a double rainbow today
01:10 lwq1996 awesome! i saw one lst year
01:11 Monkeh|Lap You lack fuses at the lab?
01:11 wannabe1987 aaron pointed it out when we were at a stop light on our way back from the shack
01:11 wannabe1987 yes,  we needed a 5amp fuse, all i found in electronics were 2amp
01:12 wannabe1987 there's a short in the system too somewhere, the amp didn't fix the issue
01:12 Monkeh|Lap Tell Boden to ask for a bulk assortment of 20mm glass fuses (I'm guessing that's what they were anyway) in the next blog. You'll get enough for 20 years. ;)
01:12 wannabe1987 lol
01:12 wannabe1987 yep
01:12 Monkeh|Lap Typically a short is what causes a fuse to blow, yes. :P
01:13 wannabe1987 hey it was a free 5.1 surround sound system...i asked for broken electronics!
01:13 Monkeh|Lap SparkyProjects: Was I the only one who picked up on the truck guy saying age doesn't blow fuses th eother day?
01:13 SparkyProjects Heard that too
01:14 Monkeh|Lap It does, unfortunately, although indirectly.
01:14 SparkyProjects It's true, overcurrent blows fuses, but an old fuse can withstand less current
01:14 Monkeh|Lap Yep.
01:15 SparkyProjects He hasn'r seen a 50 year old fuse
01:15 Thermoelectric Though they'll still work fine for many years if you don't push them close to their rating.
01:15 Monkeh|Lap An overload which would be within the capacity of a new fuse may blow one which is 20+ years old, especially exposed ones
01:15 Monkeh|Lap The breaking characteristics change with time, very dramatically in the case of exposed fusewire.

01:17 wannabe1987 yes, the star in a jar
01:17 Monkeh|Lap Yeah, not the same as a fuse.
01:17 wannabe1987 they were talking about the wire
01:17 lwq1996 hey wannabe1987, can you take a pic of the board of the system?
01:18 Monkeh|Lap Again, not the same as a fuse :)
01:18 wannabe1987 my camera is dead, and my charger is at my house
01:18 lwq1996 ah
01:18 wannabe1987 but i have a board i wanna take a photo of and see if someone knows what its from....
01:18 Monkeh|Lap Although saying that
01:18 Monkeh|Lap It'd probably make a hilarious 'fuse' for a 240V system.

01:51 Monkeh|Lap Under the feet..
01:52 wannabe1987 how do i get the feet off?
01:52 Monkeh|Lap With a fingernail, typically.
01:52 wannabe1987 hey look, a screw!
01:54 lwq1996 lol. why you taking a mouse apart?
01:55 wannabe1987 because it was broken when we recieved it....i did test it before breaking more plastic off....but there were plastic bits broken off when we got it yesterday
02:06 SparkyProjects Wannabe, you'll often find screws under sticky  labels too, you can usually feel the hole when you rub them or poke them with a screwdriver
02:06 SparkyProjects Just a tip for future dismantling ;)
02:06 wannabe1987 thanks sparky
02:08 wannabe1987 i get to dismantle part of a stereo system tonight....we got a dismantled 5 disc changer in the load yesterday....i saved the front bit to dismantle for fun :D
02:09 SparkyProjects Larger equipment may have visible screws, but sometimes they hide one under a label as well, it's their way of finding out if you open it up as the label is often designed to damage easily
02:09 wannabe1987 ahhhhh
02:10 SparkyProjects There are labels that when you carefully try to peel it off will displat 'viod' on what is left
02:11 SparkyProjects * display 'void'
02:25 wannabe1987 and how to take apart the usb dongle...
02:27 SparkyProjects If you can't find a screw (they don't usually have them), a penknife in the join
02:27 SparkyProjects Or, use some grips diagonally across the case to crack the glue
02:28 wannabe1987 vice grips are locked away in batmans cave....

02:31 wannabe1987 aaron cracked it open for me
02:32 dehve Hey, I just posted a link in the forums to my first "release" of my TGG lab, done in the Source engine. All you need is a game like Half-Life 2 to run it.
02:33 wannabe1987 cool. i don't have HL2 but zozo might
02:34 dehve It'll probably work in other games that use Source, like TF2, Portal or Left 4 Dead, but I haven't tried it in those.
02:34 wannabe1987 dont have them
02:34 dehve :P
02:36 wannabe1987 my system cannot run them, its a netbook...screen is too small for anything good tbh
02:37 lwq1996 wannabe i call bullshit
02:37 lwq1996 i play games all the time :P
02:37 lwq1996 whats your screen size
02:37 wannabe1987 10ich ish
02:37 lwq1996 pft, 7in
02:37 wannabe1987 also, my computer is agonizingly slow for whatever i do....
02:38 wannabe1987 i like my system as it is, i don't have funding for games and i'm not too fond of cracks
02:38 lwq1996 TPB
02:38 dehve The game itself is fairly old. And my map doesn't come anywhere close to using the modern features that have been tacked onto it more recently.
02:39 dehve Dunno what variety of netbook you've got, but it would run fine on a non-gaming laptop, I would imagine.
02:39 wannabe1987 no, not tpb.  i don't want those type either....i bought garry's mod and can't even play it
02:39 wannabe1987 it'd probably work on sarah, my old dell, but thats at home
02:39 wannabe1987 and rarely online
02:39 dehve Garry's Mod is the same engine too. If you can't run that, then I guess that answers that question. :(
02:42 SparkyProjects Wannabe, your netbook is probably the same as mine, several manufacturers seemed to use the same thing, it's a mobile version of windows, and mine had 1gb ram, i upgraded to 2gb, but even so, it's still a lot slower than a basic laptop
02:42 SparkyProjects mine is MSY wind 100
02:42 SparkyProjects MSI
02:43 wannabe1987 i have windows 7 home premium, i couldn't stand started
02:43 wannabe1987 its 1gb ram
02:45 Monkeh|Lap That RAM's your biggest limitation
02:45 Monkeh|Lap 1GB is barely enough to run Windows and a browser these days
02:47 Monkeh|Lap SparkyProjects: I like that method.
02:47 dehve My browser usually takes up 500mb on it's own!
02:47 Monkeh|Lap Will have to give it a try next time I have a dud PSU to deal with.
02:47 wannabe1987 same!
02:48 lwq1996 i dont use windows anymore with my netbook. im a linux fanboy
02:48 SparkyProjects My RAM upgrade was a 1GB DDR2 SO DIMM, yours is probablyt the same
02:48 wannabe1987 zozo says he'll put linux of some sort on sarah, my dell
02:48 SparkyProjects WHat method Monkeh ?
02:48 Monkeh|Lap SparkyProjects: Vice.
02:49 lwq1996 tell him to do Gentoo on sarah :P
02:49 SparkyProjects Ah, yeah, it's  a gentle way to open things
02:49 Monkeh|Lap Usually I use a hacksaw or a dremel to get a screwdriver in, which is messy.
02:50 SparkyProjects I find with my method it often only breaks the glue, and you can put them back together
02:50 Monkeh|Lap 'gentle' is not a word you apply to my vice. :)
02:50 Monkeh|Lap £50 of solid steel with a big 'Record' printed on it makes for crushed things with very little effort.
02:51 lwq1996 gentle is not a word you use with my hammer
02:51 SparkyProjects Doesn't matter the size of vice, you can still screw it in  by the millimetre
02:51 Monkeh|Lap I know :)
02:51 Monkeh|Lap I've got a spare 4" up here
02:51 Monkeh|Lap But it's awkward as hell

16:14 SparkyProjects Hi
16:16 SparkyProjects Seroster, the reservoir doesn't have pressure, it's just a header tank for the system
16:16 SparkyProjects As got using a different oil, i topped up my brakes with engine oil while out on the road, but i flushed it through at the weekend.
16:16 SparkyProjects Oils in a hydraulic system need to not affect the rubber seals within it
16:17 Experimentonomen also oil for hydraulic system also need to be 100% air free and non compressible
16:18 Experimentonomen and brake fluid is mostly eithylene glycol according to the content list i read on a bottle
16:18 Experimentonomen so its not even an oil¨
16:20 SparkyProjects "Because oils damage rubber seals and hoses in the braking system, brake fluids  are not petroleum-based. Most brake fluids used today are glycol-ether based, but  mineral oil"
16:20 SparkyProjects http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brake_fluid
16:20 BotSteve Title: Brake fluid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
16:21 Experimentonomen power steering fluid is still more or less the same hyd oil as used in excavator hyd systems and such, no ?
16:23 SparkyProjects Nt sure, but hyd oil used in machines (pistons etc) seemed different to brake fluid and power steering fluid
16:24 SparkyProjects Probably still a mineral oil, but with different properties
16:26 Seroster SparkyProjects, god damn this
16:26 Seroster This is from a hydrualic thing that turned a lever to control some kinda water flow
16:27 Seroster Still hydrualic oil, difference is that this is a tiny bit yellow and the old one was...Rust brown and full of water =D
16:27 Experimentonomen yuck
16:27 Experimentonomen well then the pump is prolly shagged
16:27 Seroster There is a rubber bladder that the handle pushes on
16:27 Seroster That rubber bladder is pushed in and won't come back out
16:28 Seroster So... Time for compressor =)=
16:28 Seroster How high pressures does the hydrualic systems handle?
16:29 Experimentonomen depending on the application, up to and beyong 1000 BAR
16:29 Seroster THIS application jackass =P
16:30 Experimentonomen i've seen a hyd hose on a excavator rupture, it resulted in a yellow cloud several meters across
16:32 SparkyProjects Point is, the diffference between stopping safely or looking at the underside of a truck, i would be sure to put the correct fluid in the system for long term use
16:33 SparkyProjects Basically any fluid will work, even water, but how it affecs the system components is crucial
16:33 Seroster I got rear brakes too
16:34 Experimentonomen SparkyProjects, water would totally destroy the pump in a matter of minutes
16:34 Seroster Experimentonomen, This is not a pump
16:34 Seroster It's a brake system
16:34 SparkyProjects I thought he was talking about his scooter
16:34 Seroster Forget about the damn excavators
16:35 Experimentonomen scooters as far as i know uses the same brake fluid as cars do
16:35 SparkyProjects yep
16:36 Experimentonomen make sure theres no water in the system or your brake calipers will corrode away in a matter of months
16:37 Experimentonomen when they leak around the pistons, its time for new calipers
16:38 SparkyProjects You can get 'repair kits', basically a set of rubber parts, done it many times before
16:41 Experimentonomen i would not trust a system that expelled a fluid that was liquid rust
16:41 Experimentonomen if that was on a car, you'd replace the entire braking system, wouldent you ?
16:42 SparkyProjects Depends on what the pipes are, but yeah, that would be a consideration to change it all
16:42 Experimentonomen the same goes with a scooter
16:43 Experimentonomen and any other engine driven vehicle
16:43 Seroster A tonne moving at 110kph with one brake system =! 150kg moving at 30.
16:44 Experimentonomen 150 kilos rolling downhill without brakes would freak me out
16:45 Seroster without FRONT brakes*
16:46 Experimentonomen knowing the only way to stop is dropping the thing tires first in front of ya and make a sliding stop
16:46 Seroster ...no
16:46 Seroster I'm not freaked out more by that than being on a pedal bike with dodgy brakes
16:47 SparkyProjects You could always carry a big rock on a rope tied to the scooter as an emergency brake :P
16:48 Seroster Or a few liters of supersuperglue!

16:50 Experimentonomen i did a sliding stop on a bike once after accedentally running into a friends back with the handle bars, ended up with a 10x10cm patch on my left arm for over a week that was excruciating pain to replace
16:50 Experimentonomen g'aftahnoon yr
16:54 Seroster God damn.
16:54 Seroster SparkyProjects,
16:54 Seroster Bleeding brakes
16:54 Seroster Squeeze handle, open bleed screw, close bleed, depress handle?
16:56 Experimentonomen i'd rather say, open bleed screw and pump handle until solid fluid comes out and close the bleed screw
16:56 Experimentonomen but if the service manual states what u posted, then thats how its done
16:57 Seroster Service manual?
16:58 Seroster That's gone fifteen years ago!
16:58 Seroster I open bleed screw, pump the handle and nothing happens
16:58 Seroster No resistance whatsoever in the handle
16:58 Experimentonomen then somethings busted
16:59 SparkyProjects Seroster, yes you can do it that way
16:59 SparkyProjects Or, open valve just enough, press brake slowly, release quickly
16:59 SparkyProjects Though the first method is best if you can reach the bleed screw while pumping
17:00 SparkyProjects You may even find for a short run of pipe that it will self bleed by gravity
17:00 Seroster Since when did Experimentonomen become a doomsday prophet?
17:01 SparkyProjects If you don'y have pressure, undo the outlet pipe and see if you can get the fluid to fill the pumping chaber
17:02 SparkyProjects If the system has been stood for a while, it's possible the piston is stuck, or that the rubber is perished
17:11 Seroster Errr
17:11 Seroster Two days
17:18 SparkyProjects You'll have to play it by ear and find a way to fill the pressure chamber and get that piston moving, even if it means taking it apart a little
17:18 SparkyProjects You may be able to put pressure into the outlet to move the piston
17:30 tehmobile45 joined #thegeekgroup
17:38 Seroster SparkyProjects, Yeah
17:38 Seroster Pressure backwards didnt work
17:38 Seroster Cleared out the line by sucking on a hose to the outlet
17:39 SparkyProjects That would taste awful if you got any fluid in your mouth :P
17:39 Seroster It did
17:39 SparkyProjects But did it work ?
17:40 Seroster Nah
17:40 Seroster Removed EVRYTHING from the reservoir
17:40 Seroster The piston is a metal piece with a rubber bushing
17:40 tehmobile45 Seroster börked it
17:40 Seroster Caught the end of it with a pair of pliers and pulled it out a good centimeter or so
17:41 SparkyProjects Sounds like the next step is dismantling, just be careful you don't pinch the rubber when you assemble
17:41 Seroster Mate
17:41 SparkyProjects dip it in the fluid first to lubricate
17:41 Seroster It doesnt get more disassembled than this

17:42 Hackbat Hi peoples
17:43 Seroster HA
17:43 Seroster SparkyProjects,
17:43 Seroster What pushes back on the handle piston is the fluid itselfd
17:44 Seroster WHen I pressed it and there was no backpressure it simply didnt extend again
17:44 Seroster Now I need to fill the entire damn system without using the handle and reservoir
17:44 Seroster I need a syringe. It's soon 8pm.
17:44 * Seroster headdesks
17:44 Seroster I need... A mcdonalds straw. Screw fancy
17:44 Seroster OR
17:45 SparkyProjects There should be a spring in the cylinder to push the piston back

17:45 eadthem joined #thegeekgroup
17:45 Seroster Yeah there is, just not very strong
17:46 SparkyProjects It doesn't have to be strong if the bore is smooth and lubricated
17:47 Seroster Cant disassemble further all press fit
17:48 SparkyProjects But if you got the piston out, you can get to the bore, give it a good clean with an oily rag (soaked in brake fuid)
17:49 Seroster but I cant
17:49 SparkyProjects so, are you able to push the piston at least ?
17:50 Seroster yeah
17:50 Seroster stiff as hell tho
17:52 SparkyProjects you should be able to push it in and it should return
17:52 SparkyProjects If there's a circlip retaining it, remove that, then tap the cylinder gently to make the piston fall out
17:52 SparkyProjects (that's how it is on cars)
17:53 Seroster this is handlebar part
17:53 SparkyProjects I know, but it should be serviceable in the same way

21:50 SparkyProjects You don't get anywhere if you're not a hack :P
21:50 SparkyProjects I remember taking my Triumph Herald engine and gearbox apaer ro rebuild, the workshop manual kept saying i need 'Churchill tool number (whatever)
21:50 SparkyProjects Sorted it with a hammer and a lever :D
21:50 SparkyProjects *apart
21:55 SparkyProjects And i couldn't get off the internet, it hadn't been invented at the time :P
22:20 Seroster SparkyProjects... I think my hydrualic oil makes the rubber expand
22:20 Seroster FUK
22:22 SparkyProjects If it's petroleum based,  it will most likely do that, that's why i posted this link earlier
22:22 SparkyProjects http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brake_fluid
22:22 BotSteve Title: Brake fluid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
22:23 Seroster Crud
22:23 Seroster How about medical grade mineral oil?
22:23 Seroster Glycerin?
22:23 Seroster Acetone? Purified gasoline? Camp stove alcohol? Sodium hydroxide?
22:24 SparkyProjects That might be sticky, i don't know
22:24 SparkyProjects Get the right stuff, that amount shouldn't cost much, but could save your life
22:24 Seroster Yeah
22:25 Seroster Thing is today is saturday
22:25 Seroster I gotta drive tomorrow
22:25 Seroster Which is a sunday, nobody's open
22:26 SparkyProjects Then you have a backward country, a lot of motorists centres are open here for part of the day, or there's the all night petrol stations
22:27 Seroster Most of them are the kind without an actual store

22:28 Seroster So...
22:28 Seroster Tomorrow, biltema it is.
22:30 Seroster Sooo
22:30 Seroster Tomorrow's shopping list:
22:31 Seroster Brake fluid, paint, wetdry sandpaper 2400grit
22:34 SparkyProjects I hope you're not going to attack the cyllinder with sandpaper :P
22:35 Seroster Heh
22:35 Seroster NO
22:35 Seroster I might be stupid but I aint THAT stupid
22:37 SparkyProjects It can be done, but you have to do it in a rotary motion, and use the back of the sandpaper for a final finish
22:37 SparkyProjects But it could also nean you can score it and let fluid leak nder pressure
22:37 Seroster I... I just.. No.
22:37 SparkyProjects I know :P
22:42 Seroster how do i get the oil out of the bushings?
22:44 SparkyProjects Hot water with dish soap, and a good rinse, then dry and soak in brake fluid
22:44 SparkyProjects Normally i would have suggested pertrol, that would be ok if you remove any rubber
22:45 Seroster will that reduce any swelling?
22:45 lwq1996 WAHOO. IM GETTING A MICROCONTROLLER
22:45 SparkyProjects Petrol will swell tubber, but water won't
22:46 Seroster Thing is the rubber already expanded, how do I get it down again?
22:46 Yrouel lwq1996 which one?
22:47 SparkyProjects I don't think you will, the oil soaks in
