00:00 BotSteve Title: why audacious is a pile of shit « nenolod.net
00:00 tonsofpcs dr_jkl: why would you move a small community away from a larger community that feeds it?
00:03 tonsofpcs and don't say it's for control, as no service-oriented non-profit should be putting itself in a position of control beyond what is necessary.
00:04 Monkeh injektion: So you're going to refuse to use an IRC network because of one person who isn't even there?
00:05 tonsofpcs I won't be able to actively participate in yet another network and, since most of the active members of the community have a presence on freenode anyway, I see no reason to even be there.
00:05 injektion charybdis isn't even the best IRCd
00:05 astro73|roam injektion: citation needed
00:06 tonsofpcs dr_jkl: you can choose to not participate in the larger community of freenode if you wish.  Nobody's going to lose any sleep over it.  We'll just make an about-channel per freenode rules and talk there if we all want to still talk together.
00:06 Monkeh injektion: Oh god, it's not the best platform! I can't possibly simply participate as a user who has no interaction with the ircd itself!
00:06 tonsofpcs Bahamut?  Seven?
00:06 injektion IRCu
00:07 tonsofpcs really?
00:07 injektion Yes
00:07 tonsofpcs *slaps injektion with the expandability fish*
00:07 Monkeh injektion: You are aware even Freenode uses code nenolod maintains?
00:07 dr_jkl tonsofpcs: i am not moving the irc. i was asked by the board to create an inhouse irc. this was done
00:08 dr_jkl they want everyone to move to it.
00:09 injektion tonsofpcs, IRCu is nice and simple
00:10 tonsofpcs dr_jkl: If the board wants to 'move' the general discussion about tgg and projects that members are working on, then the board needs to really think about the needs and desires of the community.  Sure, an IRCd probably should exist, I don't debate that, I would join an tgg IRCd that has a channel for discussing video projects, a channel for 'radio' and other live interaction, a channel where people can give 'lectures' and a cha
00:12 injektion Now I need to find a Linux compatible PCI or wireless WLAN card
00:12 Monkeh injektion: Most of them.
00:13 tonsofpcs most anything $notbrandnew
00:13 injektion This doesn't look promising http://www.2x.com/os/hardware/
00:13 BotSteve Title: Compatible Hardware - 2XOS
00:14 injektion All of the compatible WLAN devices are at the bottom
00:14 Thermoelectric I don't think we'll ever end up killing this channel, rather just use it to point to the other server, we've had quite a few people just stumble over the channel due to the size of Freenode, don't want to get rid of that.
00:14 tonsofpcs I have a 3945.
00:15 Monkeh injektion: So what you want is not Linux compatible, but $RANDOM_CRIPPLED_PRODUCT compatible
00:15 injektion Well 2XOS is Linux
00:15 injektion I just don't know how much support is there for hardware
00:16 dr_jkl Thermoelectric: sounds fine to me.
00:16 tonsofpcs Thermoelectric, dr_jkl: I suggest you take note of this: http://freenode.net/policy.shtml#advertising
00:17 BotSteve Title: freenode: Policies
00:17 dr_jkl so let freenode-staff remove it if they have a problem
00:18 injektion Sometimes I think it would be easier to just buy a thin client at this rate
00:18 Thermoelectric That's always the issues about changing servers.
00:18 tonsofpcs well, they offer you a week of grace, Thermoelectric.
00:18 tonsofpcs (see 'termination of use')
00:20 Thermoelectric I'd still rather leave this channel here, as you said earlier, not everyone wants to go to another server.
00:20 astro73|roam i plan on sticking around
00:21 astro73|roam freenode is where cool stuff happens, and if the board thinks they can control IRC....
00:21 tonsofpcs I don't plan on leaving.  If this channel is shut down, as the topic and dr_jkl suggest, I'll just move to the "about" channel.
00:22 Monkeh tonsofpcs: I've never seen them act on that.
00:23 Thermoelectric Could always just turn this into the "unofficial" channel, leaving official communications to the TGG server.
00:23 Monkeh Certainly they have not on one particular channel which does this. And it's been around for years.
00:24 astro73|roam also, the website still points to this channel
00:24 tonsofpcs Thermoelectric: I don't think that there ever have been any 'official' communications here...
00:24 tonsofpcs at least, none that I recall
00:24 astro73|roam tonsofpcs: once or twice there have been staff here to speak officially
00:24 astro73|roam but very rarely
00:25 tonsofpcs Monkeh: debian gave up the move to oftc...
00:25 Monkeh tonsofpcs: I don't particularly care what Debian does or does not do.
00:25 Thermoelectric Yep, because not everyone has agreed with having a IRC channel, now that TGG has their own, that can be the real official channel, where official stuff will happen. :P
00:25 tonsofpcs what channel is it that 'does this'?
00:25 Monkeh I am very happy not to have to deal with their distro or their developers.
00:26 astro73|roam except that most staff don't like IRC
00:26 Monkeh tonsofpcs: Now I'm not going to tell you that so you can go run crying to an op over nothing.
00:26 Monkeh In other, entirely unrelated news
00:26 Monkeh This makes me happy: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230673776890

00:27 tonsofpcs Monkeh: irrelevant....
00:27 BitViper joined #thegeekgroup
00:27 tonsofpcs hi BitViper
00:27 Monkeh tonsofpcs: What is?
00:28 tonsofpcs 20:26:17 < Monkeh> tonsofpcs: Now I'm not going to tell you that so you can go run crying to an op over nothing.
00:28 tonsofpcs and really, 20:23:19 < Monkeh> Certainly they have not on one particular channel which does this. And it's been around for years.
00:28 BitViper tonsofpcs : not hi yet, but at the rate this day/weekend is going, i may need to =/
00:28 Monkeh tonsofpcs: And I can happily counter your mention of the freenode policy as irrelevant, seeing as they don't act on it.
00:29 tonsofpcs my mention of freenode policy was for dr_jkl and Thermoelectric (and batsteve)'s benefit, it is entirely irrelevant to the argument of keeping the channel
00:30 astro73|roam the way IRC works, this channel will be here as long as there are users in here
00:30 astro73|roam nobody can forcibly shut it down
00:30 astro73|roam they can direct, beg, plead, argue, cajole, appeal to greater good, etc
00:31 tonsofpcs astro73|roam: eh, the way services work, someone could forcibly shut it down.
00:31 Monkeh astro73|roam: uhhh, I think you'll find the freenode ops can.
00:31 astro73|roam has freenode ever done that?
00:31 tonsofpcs but we'd just go somewhere else (like the appropriate 'about' channel, or a channel of our chosing)
00:31 Monkeh Yes, actually.
00:31 tonsofpcs astro73|roam: yes.
00:31 Monkeh Not very often mind you.
00:31 tonsofpcs #freenode-social
00:31 tonsofpcs I believe is forced-shut
00:31 injektion Most ChanServ's have a forbid optiopn available to services to administrators
00:32 Monkeh Didn't that become #defocus?
00:32 tonsofpcs it did, but I think they force-shut that channel
00:32 tonsofpcs I can't tell for sure, since i'm in #defocus
00:32 injektion I once used to be an IRCop on another network
00:33 tonsofpcs I'd be surprised if that wasn't true for at least 10% of the people here, injektion.
00:33 astro73|roam you can also ban *@*, but chanserv might have an option to recover from that
00:33 injektion ChanServ clear #channel bans
00:34 astro73|roam a quick browse of chanserv's commands doesn't show a shutdown option, but i didn't look closely
00:34 injektion astro73|roam, that option is only available to people that are SA's in the IRC services
00:34 astro73|roam ah
00:34 tonsofpcs astro73|roam: you could also just have chanserv force-set +cinst
00:35 injektion It's either in ChanServ OR OperServ
00:35 astro73|roam *shrug*
00:35 tonsofpcs or in a services/server admin mode that is handled by the server and not a 'xxxxServ'...
00:36 injektion In Anope/Epona it was handled by the services
00:36 astro73|roam in any case, freenode may or may not take action
00:36 astro73|roam they may just do a channel redirect
00:36 tonsofpcs iirc, anope it's in services, epona it's in SA
00:36 tonsofpcs freenode won't do a channel redirect even if you ask them to these days.
00:37 astro73|roam really? what lose
00:37 tonsofpcs even if you meet all of their guidelines...
00:37 injektion I haven't touched Epona since the Unreal 3.1.1 Darkshades days
00:38 tonsofpcs bbbiab, need food, subway closes in 40 minutes
00:44 injektion Gaah I didn't want to use or buy any Windows based thin clients
00:45 astro73|roam can they be reflashed?
00:46 injektion I know some can be reflashed with 2XOS but then again that leaves me with an issue of trying to find a good WLAN card
00:46 BitViper if the ops here really want to move ppl to the new server they need to create an actual greeting message for joins not just the channel topic that nobody reads
00:46 BitViper perhaps also have a bot post said greeting periodicly
00:47 astro73|roam probably
00:47 HighMan joined #thegeekgroup
00:47 astro73|roam also, it would be nice if the new channel was actually monitored and completely set up
00:49 BitViper that would help too
00:49 astro73|roam and the move isn't going well; there's currently 9 users
00:56 eadthem 11
00:56 astro73|roam i may have miscounted, and jkl only counts once

01:03 BotSteve ****Attention on deck!  Captain on the bridge!****
01:03 CaptainBoden Like hell it is.
01:03 BotSteve captainboden: I have the following messages for you:
01:03 BotSteve At 16 Jan 13:42Z, DruidicRifleman asked me to tell captainboden We totally need this at the lab for the cafe http://www.cuddonfreezedry.com/products/fd18.html
01:04 Thermoelectric Huh.
01:04 astro73|roam well, that was vague and non-specific
01:04 BitViper wow thats old
01:05 tysk What was vague?
01:05 astro73|roam boden
01:05 Monkeh tysk: Like hell what is?
01:05 Thermoelectric <CaptainBoden> Like hell it is.
01:05 MaxErnst joined #thegeekgroup
01:05 Thermoelectric Three connections from the lab in 5 minutes?
01:05 tysk Sorry, there were some technical difficulties over here.
01:06 MaxErnst <----Captain.
01:06 Monkeh tysk: Has the connection already gone bad without Cprossu there? :)
01:06 tysk So I hear that there are some concerns about the IRC.
01:06 astro73|roam of course there is
01:06 astro73|roam you have lots of big fans here and decisions were made without them
01:07 astro73|roam they're concerned that what the powers-that-be demand to be done won't be in line with what they want
01:07 tysk Moving to our own server is something that has been ongoing for a while now and it has been mentioned publicly.
01:07 tysk So be specific here, what are the concerns?
01:07 astro73|roam keep them in the loop and involved the creation process, and you will have happy members
01:08 astro73|roam my major concern is that staff will try to keep a stranglehold on the new channel
01:08 astro73|roam namely what is discussed there
01:08 Carvagon but the purpose of the geek group isnt to run a chat room
01:08 Carvagon so not quite sure what the eral issue is
01:08 Carvagon *real
01:09 astro73|roam (which i predict would both fail spectacularly and be harmful to the organization)
01:09 tysk We are implementing rules, for sure, but that is to keep the chat room running smoothly and to prevent veering deeply off topic and into fights and general disarray.
01:10 tysk That is something that we've tried to implement over here recently and it's been a bumpy ride. The new server is starting out with them, which will definitely make the clarity better.
01:10 astro73|roam how much will the community be involved in the creation of these rules?
01:10 tysk The purpose of The Geek Group is to allow people who have an interest in science and technology to gather together, be it virtually or in person, to discuss, explore, create, and build. the IRC definitely falls within that spectrum.
01:10 tysk The community is not involved in the rules.
01:10 Carvagon they shouldnt be involved at all
01:10 astro73|roam really?
01:11 MaxErnst Yes, Really.
01:11 astro73|roam a non-profit organization supported by it's members shouldn't involve those members in decisions?
01:11 tysk They have been made and they will be rolling out publicly within the next 24 hours as we get the new chat system up on the website.
01:11 MaxErnst Astro, you're trolling, don't be an ass.
01:11 astro73|roam no, i'm serious
01:12 MaxErnst So am I.
01:12 astro73|roam the nature of these rules will be a large determining factor of if i support the new server
01:12 Carvagon its a CHAT ROOM.  it's not a business decision.  in your logic every member should have had a say in Geek House 6 and 7 too
01:12 tysk Thanks for assuming that the rules are going to be so insufferable you can't participate before even seeing them.
01:12 astro73|roam i love the mission of the geek group, even if i don't support all the people
01:12 astro73|roam sorry, i saw "The community is not involved in the rules."
01:12 BitViper astro did the member have a say in the rules at the lab, im pretty sure not, the same reasonably applies here
01:13 BitViper especially in an official tgg server
01:13 BitViper *members
01:13 tysk The rules of the chat room specifically fall under membership management and are the same basic rules that members are required to follow anywhere else in their involvement in TGG activities.
01:13 astro73|roam i look forward to seeing the publication of these rules, then
01:14 tysk In the meantime I suggest that speculating over them and your distate for them is a futile hobby.
01:14 tysk What are the other concerns?
01:14 dr_jkl +oo tysk maxernst
01:14 * CaptainNiobe wonders exactly how this change will affect current ops
01:14 eadthem the same pepole who make and run the geek group  are manageing the server, Do you honistly beleve these pepole would screw it up?
01:14 Carvagon you will have to now joust for ops
01:14 eadthem to astro73
01:14 Monkeh eadthem: Have you not seen astro vs boden?
01:15 tysk Each op will discuss with TGG staff whether or not they want to migrate to the new server, and it will be a mutual decision for each op.
01:15 CaptainNiobe except i'm already opped on the new server, Carvagon. :)
01:15 MaxErnst Ops will be held to a rather high standard. This will be a place of respect and courtesy with serious moderation in place.
01:15 Carvagon well crap.  then you can sit back and watch everybody else duel
01:15 astro73|roam eadthem: not intentionally
01:16 CaptainNiobe "serious moderation"?
01:16 tysk Having a solid set of rules will make being an op easier, because it will remove a lot of the ambiguity that has taken place in the past.
01:16 tysk "Serious moderation" = following a set of guidelines and following them even if you may personally not care.
01:17 dr_jkl also, rules can be as simple as "be nice to each other", "don't piss on the electric fence", "don't shit in the fake tree in the office".
01:17 CaptainNiobe that's fair enough. who gets to hear my displeasure at a rule IF it rubs me the wrong way? :)
01:17 Carvagon i think its good.  but what do i know
01:17 dr_jkl i can't imagine being asked the world
01:18 Monkeh dr_jkl: But people pissing on electric fences is funny to watch.
01:18 tysk If you, or any other op, has an issue with the rules or how they are being implemented I encourage you to use the internal mailing list to discuss it.
01:19 tysk Or even if you just have questions as to how to deal with something.
01:19 Carvagon so are they migrating to a new forum system as well? :P
01:19 Thermoelectric What is intended to occur with this Freenode channel, when the migration occurs?
01:19 tysk We're still debating.
01:20 tysk Choices up in the air presently are killing it entirely, or keeping it open but locked so that it will direct people to the new server in case they find it through old links, references, etc.
01:20 eadthem 2nd is probably better
01:20 CaptainNiobe tysk: one rule that needs to go in: ban evasion gets a no-warninged instban. we had one evade a ban once, he was back in inside 2 minutes...
01:20 dr_jkl ban evasion won't be an issue on the new server.
01:21 dr_jkl At all.
01:21 tysk Please send any comments like that to the mailing list, I can't keep track of things in here.
01:21 Monkeh On a related note, auto-rejoin is bad.
01:21 dr_jkl Monkeh: client controlled setting
01:21 CaptainNiobe tysk, ok
01:21 CaptainNiobe and dr_jkl, why?
01:21 tysk But the biggest reason why we moved to the new server is that we can control exactly how it runs and what behaviours can and cannot occur on it, which means a lot of the hassle we've been dealing with on freenode is null.
01:21 Thermoelectric tysk, As mentioned earlier, leaving the channel dead and locked as a redirect generally doesn't last long. http://freenode.net/policy.shtml#advertising
01:21 Monkeh dr_jkl: You can make it a rule to not have it enabled on the server.
01:21 BotSteve Title: freenode: Policies
01:22 dr_jkl why? because we can control the horizontal, the vertical... we can bombard your senses or expand one image to crystal clear quality
01:22 dr_jkl Monkeh: i know, i'm thinking about that.
01:22 Monkeh dr_jkl: What is this, an oscilloscope?
01:23 CaptainNiobe dr_jkl, you're already blowing my mind... :D
01:23 dr_jkl on the new server, we will be able to ban more precisely. we also will have the option of removing access to the web irc to repeat offenders.
01:23 tysk That's part of why we've been considering it.
01:24 tysk At any rate, the end effect is going to be "The freenode channel will not be used in any useable capacity anymore".
01:24 tonsofpcs "no service-oriented non-profit should be putting itself in a position of control beyond what is necessary.
01:24 tonsofpcs ^^ me, earlier
01:24 tysk I read a huge chatlog earlier.
01:24 tysk Including a lot of what you said.
01:24 tonsofpcs thank you.
01:25 tysk I completely DISAGREE with you, but I read it.
01:25 tysk The IRC is a direct part of our service and our mission and thus, control is very, very necessary.
01:25 CaptainNiobe there's an issue with that. username ban or ip ban, even a host ban, getting a proxy and using a diffrent nae is all too easy these days. ask SparkyProjects all about it, he's global moderator (*almost* an admin) on one of the biggest forum systems in the world's support
01:25 CaptainNiobe board, and they *do* have ban evasions... and they have a ton of staff on the boards...
01:26 dr_jkl i can ban proxies
01:26 Monkeh Ban evasions can only really be controlled by having ops watching at all times.
01:26 dr_jkl go on, keep finding new proxies. i'll script out a system that watches for connections and shitkicks them.
01:26 tonsofpcs "The Geek Group provides access to science, technology, engineering and math by developing programming and facilities for individuals and institutions to learn, explore, innovate and play at an independent pace according to their needs.
01:26 tonsofpcs is this the current mission statement?
01:26 tysk Yes it is.
01:27 SparkyProjects Ban evasions happen all the time, most of the time we prefer warnings or temp bans, then we know where they are and can watch them
01:27 CaptainNiobe dr_jkl, if it was that easy, the forum system i was just talking about would have done it year ago...
01:27 tysk I'm just wondering how often they happen *HERE*, rather that in general practise.
01:27 tonsofpcs then I definitely look forward to the expanded education and innovation opportunities afforded by a tgg server.
01:28 Monkeh And providing a means of real-time communication is an important facility.
01:28 tysk I have been having people go on and on about how they use the IRC to communicate with TGG staff, members in the facility, discuss projects becuase they hate going into the forums, etc.
01:28 dr_jkl ban evasions are not going to be a problem because (a) we don't often ban anyone and (b) a countermeasure system for ban evasion is being worked on.
01:28 tysk Either it is part of TGG and therefore part of the mission, or it's not used for it at all and is completely irrelevant to TGG. You can't have both.
01:29 tonsofpcs countermeasures for ban evasion are quite easy:  keep a well staffed system of operators with ongoing presence.
01:29 BitViper ban evasion is rarely effective for long
01:29 Monkeh tysk: The problem with the forums isn't so much forums, as _the_ forums.
01:29 tysk Nobody has yet to tell me HOW OFTEN WE ENCOUNTER BAN ENVASIONS IN TGGCHAT. Anybody?
01:29 dr_jkl NOT OFTEN
01:29 dr_jkl next item
01:29 tonsofpcs I think I've seen one evader...
01:29 KB3NZQ joined #thegeekgroup
01:29 Monkeh People do not find it comfortable to use the TGG forums as they presently exist
01:29 tysk I am well aware that a lot of people who hang out in the IRC do not like TGG forums.
01:29 tonsofpcs but evasion is probably more of an issue on a network you don't control
01:30 dr_jkl tonsofpcs: EXACTLY my point.
01:30 tonsofpcs (presuming you have proper staffing levels)
01:30 Monkeh I don't recall ban evasion being an issue in this channel while I've been here.
01:30 tysk I am also well aware that I have said over and over IN the forums that if anybody wants to help make them better they are welcome to contact me. I have said that in IRC before and I know others have too.
01:30 SparkyProjects On the forum i'm on, we have the backup of the owner and their admins
01:30 tysk And I've gotten exactly no help from anybody who was not already on the web team. So.
01:30 Monkeh In fact, I don't recall any bans other than he who shall not be named
01:30 SparkyProjects They have more tools
01:31 Monkeh tysk: I am fully able to install and administrate a phpBB or SMF based forum, but I cannot integrate it (theme-wise) with the existing website.
01:31 tysk I am perfectly capable of installing phpBB
01:31 tonsofpcs you could *gulp* frame it.
01:31 CaptainNiobe i know of one other, Monkeh. his name was rusty. ring a bell?
01:31 astro73|roam can we save the forum fixing for after the IRC fixing?
01:31 Monkeh CaptainNiobe: Possibly before my time or I just plain missed it.
01:31 tysk We used to run phpBB
01:31 tysk and then it melted.
01:31 Monkeh Melted? Interesting.
01:32 tysk The website, the forums, etc., are not changing platforms.
01:32 tysk This is not up for debate or discussion and any help offered to work on the website that requires a platform change will be summarily rejected.
01:32 Monkeh Then I'm not sure how the forum can be improved without unfeasible levels of reworking
01:32 tysk Now, approaching the existing platform and seeing how you can make it BETTER. Now, there's a fantastic idea.
01:32 Carvagon yep
01:32 CaptainNiobe Monkeh, you musta missed it then. he used the n word wand was warned. used iut again, got banned. came back in a couple of minutes, was banned again, came back AGAIN, and stayed. :-\
01:33 Monkeh CaptainNiobe: Interesting, I don't recall that.
01:33 Monkeh But while my client is here 24/7, I don't read the entire log when I'm actually here.
01:33 CaptainNiobe i sure as hell do.
01:35 tysk We are at a point right now where user accounts are shared across the board (because in about 80% of it, it's the same platform) which has been a huge goal ... we are almost ready to roll out a big backend change that will make things look and feel better for a lot of it (not forums, but other parts of the user interaction)
01:35 tonsofpcs tysk: anyway, if you need an embedable chat client for the website, I'd recommend the one that I have on my site right now.  It's Java based - I can link to an example if you'd like.
01:35 tysk That's totally dr_jkl's thing, not mine.
01:35 Monkeh Can I just make a vote for not using java?
01:35 Carvagon lol
01:35 tonsofpcs Monkeh: you use a real irc client :)
01:35 exor674 why should we reinvent the webchat wheel, anyway?
01:35 astro73|roam i would like to request not java as well
01:36 Monkeh tonsofpcs: Why yes, I do.
01:36 Monkeh But occasionally even I need to grab a web client, and a java one would displease me greatly.
01:36 astro73|roam freenode uses qwebirc, and a friend of mine wrote the one used on firstchat.net (which uses socket.io)
01:36 CaptainNiobe tysk: i know i'm an op on both channels now, and i am a member on the forums, but i'm not a *member* member... how does that affect things in the new server? any?
01:37 tysk I'm unsure what you mean, precisely.
01:37 exor674 paid membership, I'm thinking?
01:37 tonsofpcs as am I unsure, since 'membership' has never been quite clear
01:37 tysk Being a "member" is having a user account on the website.
01:37 CaptainNiobe i'm not a tgg paying member, i don't have a card, and haven't bought anything. does that affect anything to do with me or similier users on the new irc server?
01:38 tysk Not at all.
01:38 CaptainNiobe ok, good to know :)
01:38 astro73|roam keep in mind, i am a paid member. having a card means jack
01:39 tysk Having a card means a lot of things. Actually.
01:39 CaptainNiobe astro, being a paid member should entitle you to more than someone like me? :D
01:39 astro73|roam you'd think so
01:40 Carvagon why?
01:40 tysk You are a paying member? I don't remember seeing your name pop up on it.....
01:40 tysk are you paying cash?
01:40 MaxErnst Being a paid member does not entitle you to being an ass.
01:40 * CaptainNiobe looks at MaxErnst mischievously
01:40 astro73|roam tysk: i paid seperate pay pal last summer
01:41 astro73|roam MaxErnst: neither does running the thing
01:42 tysk I only see one payment from you in Paypal's history, May-30-2011, for your membership card.
01:42 astro73|roam then i missed a memo about what it means to be a "paid" member
01:43 tysk A membership card is your Geek card, which is a requirement for monthly membership.
01:43 tysk Once we get all of the hardware for it (which we are working on), your card will be how you enter the facility, sign in, track useage and reserve space.
01:43 astro73|roam so monthly membership did get implemented
01:43 tysk Monthly membership has been around for quite some time now and has been announced in MANY locations.
01:44 tysk And we have quite a few paying members.
01:44 astro73|roam will have to look into it
01:44 Carvagon hahaha
01:44 CaptainNiobe tysk, did i misread or do you have a yearly membership option too?
01:44 tysk Much like if you sign up at the YMCA, you have to pay an initial fee which includes your membership card. Unlike the YMCA, our sign up fee, if you will, is $20 instead of $100+.
01:44 tysk We have monthly, quarterly and annual. Annual membership ends up being $1/day.
01:45 astro73|roam i see that
01:45 tysk It would be quite irresponsible of us to make paid membership a one-time $20 fee and allow everybody to roam freely.. :)
01:45 tonsofpcs if I were to decide to become a member, where does my money go?  (is there a document somewhere showing this perhaps?)
01:45 tysk Your membership dues go into the general budget.
01:46 tysk While you can earmark donations to go to specific causes, purchases you cannot.
01:47 Carvagon makes sense

01:53 tonsofpcs so, drifting a bit off (on?) topic, but I want to ask since there's folks here (and I understand that there may not be an answer at this time):  I know that an interest has been expressed in establishing regional tgg sub-groups outside of GR and possibly physical locations.  If such a location were to exist, could members request that their whole donation go to that location/sub-group?  Would it be funded in part through the ge
01:54 tysk You're asking an extremely large question.
01:55 tysk We have been working with our legal team of developing chapter formation and that will be rolling out in the next few months -- it is a HUGE process and not one that can be jumped into immediately.
01:55 tysk We've been working on it for a good six months already and we're about halfway through hammering out the details.
01:55 tonsofpcs cool :)
01:56 tysk As far as indicating payments to go to non-official groups, sub-groups, whatever - NO. If something has not been officially sanctioned as a TGG project, we can't automatically put money towards that. What we would do, if something like that happened, is contact the person who sent the funds and discuss the details with them.
01:56 lwq1996 why is everyone still using the irc.freenode.net? we got a new server
01:56 lwq1996 hello there moose
01:56 tysk If we could come to an amicable conclusion we would direct the funds towards that, otherwise we would be forced to refund them.
01:56 tonsofpcs well, I meant "chapters", I guess
01:57 tysk We are discussing the transition and some questions related to that this evening while we are rolling out the new server and integrating it on everything.
01:57 astro73|roam will the new server have any integration into the existing membership system?
01:57 lwq1996 hmmmm i see
01:57 astro73|roam however it's implemented
01:57 tysk It will. Not immediately, but it will.
01:58 astro73|roam like what?
01:58 tysk This was, in fact, a significant reason why we moved.
01:58 tysk You will see.
01:58 astro73|roam what can we look forward to?
01:58 tysk You can look forward to integration with the existing membership structure.
01:59 lwq1996 i just got one question. you may not see my question nice but i got to say it. will the new irc be forgotten about by the main staff?
01:59 tysk The IRC has never been forgotten about by the main staff.
01:59 astro73|roam oh, i know
02:01 lwq1996 well we havent be 'forgotten' by that term, but will someone be atleast there parts of the time to see if IRC is ok, has any questions, or has a problem that might only the main staff be able to handle
02:02 lwq1996 sorry for my poor spelling and grammar in advance because im tired and cross eyed
02:02 Carvagon lol
02:02 tysk Whether or not the IRC membership has been able to see it, the main staff HAS been in the loop for major concerns, difficulties and issues since the very beginning.
02:02 tysk We simply don't have time to hang out here all the time, which is why the IRC staff generally relays things to us.
02:03 tysk Generally speaking if you have questions or concerns that you think the main staff should answer, you are better off asking in the forums or filling out a contact form, because it is simply too hard to monitor specific details and ongoing questions in a realtime chat environment.
02:03 tysk It is much better suited to discussing topics at-hand and facilitating in real-time research and then going back to the forums.
02:04 lwq1996 Hmmm, well. you are right.
02:04 eadthem will it be possable to have a shooting schedule posted?  so we know when live events will happen   autopsies and such?
02:05 tysk We have been working on integrating a calendar system into the main site but it is not ready for "prime time" yet.
02:05 Carvagon nice
02:06 eadthem i need to just take 2 weeks off work and come up :p
02:06 Carvagon lol
02:06 tysk I encourage anybody who wants to help out to contact me, we can always use more hands (and you don't have to be here to code -- I am the only member of the web team who is in GR)
02:06 Carvagon pick me up on the way
02:06 tysk Requirements: Ability to code, and the ability to work within the platforms and structures we are already using.
02:07 eadthem you between GR and kansas city?
02:07 Carvagon crap........
02:07 Carvagon no
02:07 Carvagon lol
02:07 lwq1996 most of us look at our email's and such often enough. i check mine almost every hour or more often. could there possible be a way of you guys sending a mass email with something like "Live autopsy happening in 'insert time here', please go to www.justin.tv/thegeekgroup for a live show.
02:08 tysk No.
02:08 tonsofpcs some of us avoid looking at our e-mail and would much prefer an IRC channel going crazy ;)
02:08 eadthem INDIANA, INDIANAPOLIS is on the way ish :p
02:08 Carvagon haha
02:09 tysk While we do plan on rolling out a few mailing-list related things "soon", I am not going to do them in close enough intervals to update with livestream times. But, that's what the calendar is for.
02:09 tysk It is actually going to be integrated with Google calendar, so if you wanted to watch something I suppose you could tell it to alert you prior...
02:09 tysk Part of the magic of our google integration.
02:09 eadthem Carvagon adds 3 hours to a 10 hour drive
02:10 eadthem still can do it in a day :p

02:12 tysk Jessica handles server-related things, I handle web-related things.
02:12 eadthem all i know is i need to get a chapter in KC started,  prob be best to vist first.
02:13 eadthem it wouldnt be for a year as im planning to still buy a house in 6 months
02:13 tysk While we are still months away from official chapter creation, I can tell you that our advice to anybody wanting to do it is to start informal (in fact, that will be a requirement)
02:13 tysk Get 5-20 people gathering together on any sort of regular basis, working on whatever interests your local group.
02:14 tysk It is definitely not the sort of thing where you START by looking for a facility to buy or tools to buy or anything like that. It has to happen organically, you have to have the local support before you can consider anything else.
02:14 tysk It is definitely going to be a 3-5 year process for every chapter (for various reasons) but it will end up being worth it --- and will weed out anybody who simply can't commit to that, invidiually or as a group.
02:15 lwq1996 im thinking about my senior project being in getting people interested in science and technology
02:16 tysk Okay, everybody, my time here this evening is nearing an end. Before I depart, does anybody have any quesitons or concerns that haven't been addressed yet?
02:16 eadthem you ever tryed hollow turning?
02:16 lwq1996 all my questions has been answered. thank you for your time :)
02:16 tysk Not yet. (Though that is pretty off topic!)

02:17 eadthem ya thanks
02:17 tonsofpcs good night and thank you.
02:17 tysk Great. If anybody else pops up who has questions about the new server please 1) direct them to the new server and 2) address questions about it in the forums and myself or other staff will answer as soon as we can.

02:40 joe1212 i have one more problem with my tesla coil i git little out put how can i fix that
02:40 joe1212 i am powering it with a flyback
02:40 tonsofpcs do you have a jesus stick handy?
02:40 lwq1996 joe. the position of the secondary and primary should be a good place to start
02:40 astro73|roam tonsofpcs: you may have to clarify what you mean by "syslog server" then
02:41 tonsofpcs astro73|roam: I need the software running to catch syslog events from my router
02:42 joe1212 i wound the primary coil around the secondary is that bad
02:42 tonsofpcs (syslogd)

02:46 lwq1996 secondary?
02:46 joe1212 no

02:55 lwq1996 SparkyProjects: is 20gauge wire for a primary a little light?
02:55 joe1212 yea kinda
02:56 SparkyProjects It will work, but try to get something thicker,  multistrand is best
02:56 joe1212 ok
02:56 joe1212 i got my spark gap to work
02:56 lwq1996 got any cheap and junky 12-10gauge wire from an old unused or busted jumper cables?
02:56 SparkyProjects The current at those frequencies travels on the surface, so the bigger the srface area the better, that's why people use tube
02:57 joe1212 maybe ill have to look
02:57 joe1212 how many turn should i use
02:57 lwq1996 and he is also wrapping the primary around the seconday. is that ok for the size coil he is making?
02:58 lwq1996 i would say 8-10 turns. but im not really a person to ask. i havent built one yet myself but am designing one :P
02:58 joe1212 yea
02:59 SparkyProjects Joe, can you give me the specs of your coil, transformer voltages and power, caps, secondary wire gauge and turns, and diameter and height of winding
02:59 joe1212 yea
03:01 joe1212 the caps are 1600v 1uf
03:01 joe1212 transformer is a tv flyback
03:01 joe1212 prim is 5turns 20 gage wire
03:01 SparkyProjects Just a sec
03:02 joe1212 ready
03:02 SparkyProjects Maybe the best thing is to use the20 gauge, do several turns and give it a go
03:03 SparkyProjects I thought you were using a NST  or OBIT
03:03 joe1212 no a flyback
03:03 SparkyProjects I don't know a lot about using a flyback as a tesla
03:03 joe1212 the spark dont work well
03:04 lwq1996 best way is trial and error though. right sparky?
03:04 joe1212 like it fire once or twice then blows my fuse
03:05 lwq1996 bigger fuse :P
03:05 SparkyProjects Personally i don't know if a flyback has the power, so yeah, trial and error, you'll have to play with the tapping point to tune it
03:05 joe1212 it will work i have seen videos on youtube
03:07 lwq1996 i have too. its pretty cool
03:07 joe1212 yea that why i want to make one
03:07 joe1212 but it has giving me nothing but a head ach

10:26 Experimentonomen so i will have 2x30VAC , dunno how many A two 1.5mm2 cables in parallel can take though
10:26 einball about 35Amps
10:27 Experimentonomen this 1.5mm2 cable i used is rated to 10A at 230VAC when intalled in house wiring inside of the walls between the breaker panel and the outlets so it is not rated for beeing coiled up in a transformer
10:31 einball 35A ..
10:31 Electricguy yeah.. 10+10=35
10:31 Electricguy oh.. 4
10:32 Electricguy nvm :P
10:32 einball 20µm bond may stand up to 17A

14:55 Experimentonomen Electricguy, im just an older version of CDC
14:55 Electricguy no. you actually got knowledge. he doesn't
14:56 Experimentonomen well he can read a schematic and build an amp from it
14:56 Electricguy yeah thats about it..
14:56 Electricguy but he doesn't even think..
14:57 Experimentonomen thats about it for me too, i dont understand how amp circuits work, i just know how to read the schematic
14:57 Electricguy he bought the same webcam as i got and whined like a pig about that flourecent lights flicker on the screen cause of it.. OF COURSE IR DOES! thats what the DRIVER is there to cancel out!
14:58 Electricguy and instead of installing the driver for the cam he built an EXTREMELY crude high freq driver to run his lights...
14:58 Electricguy genius!
14:58 Electricguy DUDE! stop it! you make your own schematics and simulate them!
14:59 Experimentonomen still noesent mean i understand how they work, whenever i have an issue i just stare and scratch my head and wonder why it doesent work, and then randomly fiddle around until i manage to get it to work
15:06 Yrouel Electricguy despite the origin it's a neat solition tho
15:06 Yrouel solution
15:06 Electricguy why not just install the friggin driver for the camera BEFORE trying to tell the world it's a total shit camera?
15:06 Electricguy cause it's really not..
15:06 Electricguy mine works like a charm
15:07 Yrouel I meant the solution to power the fluorescent tubes not the solution to make the cam works
15:07 dbshortwave wow i missed the bus on that one
15:07 Electricguy the CFL driver thing?
15:08 Electricguy well yeah. it works
15:08 Electricguy whats really disturbing is that he got NO respect for electrical safety...
15:09 Yrouel Electricguy in that case sooner or later Darwin will win...
15:09 Electricguy yeah
15:10 Electricguy in some video when he's playing with.. i think it's a flyback he starts out by talking about the risks and all that.. then he's holding a flimsy speaker wire with the HOT side of the flyback on it and then somehow manage to pull the whole thing off from the bench.. lovely
15:10 Experimentonomen he prolly thinks that 240VAC is as harmless and fondling the poles of a 9v battery
15:10 Electricguy and using clear sticky tape for insulating wires is an AWESOME idea
15:11 Electricguy of course he does! cause photonicinduction said so
15:11 Electricguy cause for some reason he seem to think he automatically got the same knowledge and experience as photon
15:12 Yrouel I gues is one of the motivation why photonicinduction stopped making videos a while ago
15:12 Electricguy yeah
15:12 Yrouel too many idiots where replicating it's actions
15:12 Yrouel without proper safety precautions
15:12 Electricguy a LOT of people try to do what he does.. and they have no idea what they are doing
15:13 Electricguy i don't know how many questions i have got from little kids on youtube asking me how to hook up a MOT..
15:13 Electricguy if they don't even know that.. i'm NOT going to help them!
15:13 Yrouel yeah I can undestand
15:13 Yrouel I have my mot sitting in a box
15:13 tonsofpcs the guy that's been coming in here and asking all sorts of flyback questions scares me.

15:14 Yrouel well I dismantled a microwave oven took from the street
15:14 Electricguy i got a MOT in a box.. with a cooling fan. proper terminals and proper HV cables for it
15:14 Electricguy and i DO know the risks
15:15 Yrouel I know the risks too but I admit that I don't have enough experience to play with it
15:15 tonsofpcs I should make a youtube video "How to use a MOT to create RF" and just show me putting a bowl of something in the microwave and pressing the cook buttons :-p
15:15 Yrouel I'm learning with NST
15:15 Electricguy tons, lol :P
15:15 Yrouel which at least are less likely to be lethal except some scenarios
15:16 Electricguy yeah.. if you don't feel really safe when using high powerstuff... then don't use it
15:18 tonsofpcs would be better if Experimentonomen did it as a video "I know some of you have been asking how to use a MOT at home so I figured I'd finally answer.  I have here a microwave oven.  I'll open it up (opens door) and put my heat sink inside of it (some sort of heat-and-eat product).  Now, you want to make sure that your heat sink has high water content and no exposed metal.  (closes door) I'll press the timed cook button and enter

17:10 Yrouel but on mac it's easyier beign the "exe" a dir .app

20:29 FunkEngine how soon do they "need" to be disposed of?
20:29 tonsofpcs it's 12 from here to the labs.
20:29 FunkEngine same for me.
20:30 tonsofpcs (including the death trap that is the interstate through ohio and a stop for breakfast at mc'ds in bath and a stop for lunch at subway somewhere in ohio and a stop just inside MI for some stuff (water + things I forgot) at a truck stop
20:30 FunkEngine hah jesus, to get to you its literally: go get on 81 north.  Drive till you see the Binghamton exit.
20:30 tonsofpcs no clue how soon and I have to confirm that we can just give them away.
20:31 tonsofpcs well, you're gonna merge onto 17 and deal with some silly construction, then take the exit after the "Shopping Mall" exit, turn right, turn right, turn in to the left, turn the truck around, back up , ... but yea, basically.
20:31 FunkEngine tonsofpcs: don't forget the stop just before Ohio to unload the firearm, and lock the bullets in one container and the firearm itself in a different container. and then a stop just inside MI to take it all out again.
20:32 FunkEngine stupid ohio!
20:32 FunkEngine 98% of the mileage is on I-81 north. :)
20:32 tonsofpcs FunkEngine: I don't tend to drive with a firearm, yet alone a loaded one...
20:32 FunkEngine Well, you are in NY, so I guess things are harder up there.
20:32 tonsofpcs not really, I'm just 'city folk'
20:33 FunkEngine all the more reason you should.
20:33 tonsofpcs I don't (or do, depending on who you ask) talk with a funny accent and I don't think that anything up here counts as traffic, not even the university approach on the first/last days of school.

20:38 tonsofpcs raster != vector
20:38 wannabe1987 no, i dont know

20:43 tonsofpcs FunkEngine: can you muster the raster skills to clean out that backround and then run edge detect on it and clean it up?
20:44 FunkEngine potentially, but see, for some reason, and its one of my more personally frustrating failings, is that I'm no good with drawing/art.
20:44 FunkEngine I can photoshop the SHIT out of stuff.
20:45 FunkEngine but when it comes to making awesome, in .svg form, I'm worthless. :(
20:45 FunkEngine however I'm planning to learn from the best at the labs. :)
20:45 tonsofpcs right, but if you can get it clean enough that edge detect draws teh outline, you can vectorize that quite easily, then you just need some art to draw in whiskers and such to make the cat be a cat again
20:46 FunkEngine right, and that's where I fail.
20:46 FunkEngine I can vectorize the sousaphone.
20:46 FunkEngine no problem.
20:46 tonsofpcs well, the cat outline shouldn't be a problem either
20:46 FunkEngine but when I get to the cat, I get something that looks like a balloon animal.
20:47 tonsofpcs zoom in and work in segments, don't worry about making a 'cat' but make the outline.
20:47 FunkEngine I have trouble with adding the whitespaces that show reflection and depth. :)
20:47 tonsofpcs you don't do that for the style that RCA used... you just layer..
20:47 FunkEngine ok, let me find a better example.

23:24 Katemonster well. i just found something rather unfortunate.
23:24 Katemonster (also i put this keyboard back together)
23:25 exor674 Katemonster: what did you immolate?
23:25 Katemonster on my other (primary) keyboard, there is a metal shield on the back of the key membrane (normal feature afaik)
23:25 Katemonster ground on the PCB is tied to ground wire in the PS/2 cord
23:26 Katemonster metal back panel is grounded to PS/2 cord ground shield
23:26 Katemonster there's also a trace on the membrane that is supposed to link the metal ground panel to ground on the PCB.
23:26 Katemonster it's burnt.

23:43 FunkEngine had to be.
23:43 Katemonster KB has never given me any problems though.  except the lock LEDs never working because the solder was broken on the bottom of all three, which is why i took it apart in the first place.
