00:06 FunkEngine have any graphics geeks come on recently?  I need something stupidly simple, but beyond my pathetic ability.
00:11 HighMan lwq1996, What's the biggest fish you got?
00:11 lwq1996 dont remember
00:12 HighMan ... :P
00:12 FunkEngine fishing isn't about the fish.
00:12 lwq1996 i catch and release
00:12 lwq1996 yup FunkEngine
00:12 lwq1996 i go for relaxation
00:12 HighMan I've lost a shoe and pooped on once in the same day -_- :P
00:12 lwq1996 lol
00:12 FunkEngine don't poop on your shoes.
00:13 HighMan :P Sitting on the ledge of the pier swinging my legs and I loose a shoe. I also got pooped on by a bird, touched it and then looked up. Basically, "OH SHIT!"
00:14 lwq1996 hahahahaha
00:14 HighMan Got no fish that day lol
00:14 lwq1996 haha

02:43 Cprossu *yawns*
02:44 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: Bored already? :)
02:44 Cprossu nope just tired
02:44 Cprossu re-upholstered a seat for the first time
02:44 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: Well, while you're alive. Windows Backup, how good/bad is it?
02:44 Monkeh|Lap Car seat or ordinary dining table seat or?
02:44 Cprossu dining table chair
02:45 Cprossu bought myself god's own stapler
02:45 Cprossu and 12mm staples
02:45 Monkeh|Lap Done a full set of those myself.
02:45 Cprossu 2 down, 4 to go
02:45 Monkeh|Lap heh
02:45 Monkeh|Lap Never used a box stapler? ;)
02:45 Cprossu the first chair had 60 staples holding the fabric in
02:46 Cprossu the second chair had 137 o_o
02:46 Monkeh|Lap Yikes.
02:46 Cprossu I managed to save the fabric too
02:46 Cprossu (yay washing machine!)
02:46 Cprossu and the foam was in good condition but I gave it a 'bath'
02:46 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: http://img.directindustry.com/images_di/photo-g/one-handed-blind-stapler-for-box-closing-59434.jpg
02:46 Monkeh|Lap Those things are mildly frightening. :)
02:47 Cprossu those are completely freightening
02:47 Cprossu I hate stepping on those too
02:47 Monkeh|Lap It takes quite a staple for me to notice stepping on it.
02:48 Monkeh|Lap I dunno, maybe I wasn't so frightened of the stapler seeing as the rest of my day involved feeding a machine with three foot and a half wide blades driven by a three-phase motor.
02:48 Monkeh|Lap Boy, that was a fun time.
02:49 Cprossu http://images.truevalue.com/getimage_new.asp?id=314187&ImageType=2&NoImageType=2&ColorImageSize=3
02:49 Cprossu ^ $19 not too bad
02:49 Monkeh|Lap That's essentially identical to what I've got.
02:49 Monkeh|Lap Very useful
02:50 Cprossu I paid the $19 to get one 'made in the USA'
02:50 Cprossu as opposed to the  $12 for the chinese one
02:50 Monkeh|Lap Right
02:50 Monkeh|Lap In other words, someone slipped the rubber bits on and put it in the blister pack in the USA.
02:51 Cprossu no they stamped the metal in the USA too
02:51 Monkeh|Lap Wow
02:51 Cprossu I know, I was impressed
02:51 Monkeh|Lap Suppose that's better than nothing
02:52 Monkeh|Lap Anyway, ever used Windows Backup/Backup and Restore/whatever they call it next time round?
02:53 Katemonster monkeh, wanna see something fun?
02:54 Cprossu ehttp://www.arrowfastener.com/sites/default/files/MD-0003%20T50PBN%20Parts%20List%20FOR%20WEB%20REV210-L.pdf
02:54 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: Maaaaybe
02:54 Cprossu wow it's more complicated than I thought Monkeh|Lap
02:54 Katemonster http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/8866/burnttrace.png
02:54 Cprossu yeah I've used it
02:54 Cprossu and had luck with it
02:54 Cprossu but...
02:54 Cprossu it still sucks
02:54 Monkeh|Lap Any better suggestions to allow scheduled backups and on-the-fly restoration?
02:55 Monkeh|Lap Katemonster: .. well, one of those found its way to a bit of potential.. :)
02:55 Katemonster that was inside my keyboard.
02:55 Monkeh|Lap USB?
02:55 Katemonster PS/2
02:56 Monkeh|Lap Impressive.
02:56 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: it's rebooted twice in the past day and a half... (the router)
02:56 Cprossu so many of the solutions out there (eg backtrack, ghost, etc) really suck though
02:56 Cprossu =(
02:56 Katemonster since i've never had my keyboard try to kill either me or my PC, and the fact that it came from a junk pile seven years ago, i'm guessing it happened to the previous owner.
02:56 Sgt_Lemming joined #thegeekgroup
02:56 Cprossu and they dn't count as reliable in my book
02:56 tonsofpcs of course, on reboot it flushes the logs that I have going to RAM (don't want to kill NAND flash and all that)
02:56 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Quality.
02:57 Katemonster anyway, t'has been repaired.
02:57 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: It's less for reliable backups as an easy to use way to roll back any damage which might be caused
02:57 tonsofpcs so I set up a syslogd on windows, as you know, and I now have it properly logging pretty  much everything.... so nothing has happened.

02:59 tonsofpcs wow
02:59 joe1212 hey  lwq1996
02:59 Katemonster i opened it up to repair the lock lights which didn't work, and i found that.
02:59 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: May just have to recommend Windows Backup and hope it works out (or isn't needed).
03:00 Cprossu hope on the latter
03:00 Katemonster the lock lights just suffered broken solder.  all has been repaired.
03:00 tonsofpcs someone maybe forced the mini DIN connector into either (1) a multipin video output miniDIN or (2) upside down/sideways into a keyboard port to get the voltage on the wrong thing
03:00 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: Well, it's a semi-public machine.
03:00 Katemonster lol
03:00 Cprossu think carbonite is a solution Monkeh|Lap?
03:00 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: need a clone or just the incremental restore states?
03:01 Katemonster well, that actually wouldn't surprise me since the plastic indexing key inside the DIN is broken off.
03:01 FunkEngine yo, cprossu.  What is the first thought that crosses your mind...  www.funkengine.net/Zi6_1238.JPG and www.funkengine.net/Zi6_1239.JPG  That's NEW IN BOX.
03:01 Katemonster i'm just always careful about orientation when i connect it.
03:01 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Incremental restore states (with a bit more finality than System Doesn'tquiteRestore), I'll take a full image of the system when it's set up in case of total cockups.
03:01 Cprossu not too shabby FunkEngine
03:01 Monkeh|Lap Occasional clones might be nice, though.
03:01 exor674 .... ahahahahhaha. oops? http://i.imgur.com/YckgB.jpg
03:01 Cprossu I wonder if I can get my IBM PT/2 and that to talk
03:01 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: clonezilla image on a hidden partition and some sort of locked boot partition that runs clonezilla and restores it every month or so?
03:02 FunkEngine Cprossu: the manual actually even has a full schematic pullout in the back... its brilliant!
03:02 tonsofpcs I mean, do you need/want to keep changes that people make?
03:02 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Wiping user data is not desired.
03:02 tonsofpcs k.
03:02 tonsofpcs the windows included thing just puts files on the system drive, plainly accessable, viruses think they're the real thing and not the clone, so they infect both
03:02 Cprossu I like the 'digital' box beneath it batter tbh
03:02 FunkEngine Cprossu: What would you do with a VAX part of the week subscription?
03:02 FunkEngine :3
03:02 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Oh, that's helpful.
03:03 Cprossu hahah
03:03 tonsofpcs Gateway had "GoBack" which they sold off (to roxio, I believe) a while back which does that incremental stuff but to a separate partition and it does it based on the whole system, regardless of OS
03:03 FunkEngine www.funkengine.net/Zi6_1232.JPG  Vax board.
03:03 Cprossu tonsofpcs: as I recall
03:03 Cprossu adaptec bought goback
03:03 Cprossu then it became roxio
03:03 Cprossu and then morphed into 2 other things
03:03 tonsofpcs idk, it was licensed for a while then sold then licensed back then...  yea
03:03 Monkeh|Lap A free solution is preferred, btw.
03:03 FunkEngine you know if I send it to you, its like a fungus, I give it two years tops and you'll have been able to build a complete power and space hungry EDIFICE of a former supercomputer. :)

03:04 Monkeh|Lap And no, I'm not touching Symantec.
03:04 tonsofpcs where good products go to die.... (RIP Partition Magic)
03:04 FunkEngine NortonGoback is Ghost Lite
03:04 Cprossu I was right though
03:04 FunkEngine Ghost is still good, but yeah symantec is worthles right now.
03:04 Cprossu it was bought by adaptec, then spun off with roxio
03:05 Cprossu SparkyProjects you around?
03:05 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: yes, but the wikipedia article lists 'competing products' ;)

03:06 Cprossu awwwww it's only one part of it
03:06 FunkEngine sadly.
03:06 FunkEngine but its a part of THE 1-s/1000 from LANL
03:06 Cprossu you are a few circuits short of a bench though
03:06 tonsofpcs unfortunately, it seems to run in just windows....
03:06 Cprossu x?D
03:06 FunkEngine atomic bomb simulations were run on those boards!
03:06 tonsofpcs but it might meet monkeh needs
03:06 SparkyProjects wassup Cprossu ?
03:06 Monkeh|Lap tonsofpcs: Again, looking at free solutions first.
03:06 Cprossu do you have that fancy shmancy industrialcraft all in one SparkyProjects
03:07 FunkEngine hit sourceforge for "ghost"
03:07 Cprossu I've got some spare hardware now I bought in grand rapids
03:07 SparkyProjects industrialcraft ?
03:07 Cprossu you were the one who popped up with the heavily modded teknik minecraft install right?
03:07 FunkEngine http://sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/?source=directory
03:08 FunkEngine there.  free ghost alternative.
03:08 Cprossu I just remember someone around here did
03:08 FunkEngine open source, multi platform etc.
03:08 BotSteve Title: Clonezilla | Free Security & Utilities software downloads at SourceForge.net
03:08 SparkyProjects Nope, i don't play those sort of games
03:08 Cprossu I couldn't remember if it was you, so my bad
03:08 Cprossu I know someone did
03:08 Cprossu (looks to the chat history)
03:08 Monkeh|Lap FunkEngine: Ghost is.. not what I'm looking for.
03:09 FunkEngine spell it out for me again.
03:09 tonsofpcs Monkeh|Lap: http://www.comodo.com/home/backup-online-storage/data-recovery.php sounds interesting
03:09 BotSteve Title: Data Recovery with Comodo Time Machine | Comodo
03:09 tonsofpcs FunkEngine: automatic incremental backups, restoration only 'undoes' changes
03:10 FunkEngine oooh, that's a tough one.
03:10 tonsofpcs I mean, sure, you *could* run ghost daily and have a second hdd only seen by ghost taht is like 4x the size of the main...
03:10 Monkeh|Lap Yes, that does look potentially useful.
03:10 FunkEngine short of running as a VM in Virtualbox, I can't think of any restore option that doesn't require a whole drive recover to undo "changes" aside from restoring just a specific file.
03:11 FunkEngine tonsofpcs: dude, ghost compresses shit well.
03:11 FunkEngine I use it, daily incrementals at 0700, new set every month, keep 3 months.
03:11 tonsofpcs FunkEngine: we went through at least three here already ;)
03:11 FunkEngine if I fuck up, I drop the boot disk in the drive, reboot, diskpart/clean the drive, and restore in 45 mins. :)
03:12 tonsofpcs alternatively, you could run a crazy over-journaling fs and never consolidate...
03:12 tonsofpcs it's a PITA to roll-back a journal though, despite how obvious it should be
03:12 FunkEngine I mean, Ghost is "so good" it actually restores the filesystem errors too!  So remember to run chkdsk after the restore but before the first boot.
03:14 tonsofpcs clonezilla can't do incremental yet but it can do server-based cloniing
03:18 Cprossu so FunkEngine,

03:21 FunkEngine no fucking way is that a 68k with intel parts.
03:22 FunkEngine is that some kind of fucking development platform for integrated systems or something?
03:22 Cprossu nope it was a special computer though

03:22 FunkEngine what was it... for, for home and office use...

03:23 FunkEngine ahh, yes.
03:23 Cprossu Windows NT 4.
03:23 Cprossu specifically x86
03:23 Cprossu but it could dual boot

03:23 Cprossu ;D
03:23 FunkEngine wait, it ran the x86 version of nt4 on a ppc chip?

03:25 Cprossu but yeah there was a company that motorola bought up
03:25 Cprossu called 'firepower systems'
03:26 Cprossu they made kickass things
03:26 FunkEngine to be fair that machine has no right to life.
03:26 FunkEngine it is an abomination.
03:26 egrsteve that looks like a motor overload

03:27 Cprossu uw scsi
03:27 tonsofpcs darn
03:27 Cprossu and I highly doubt it'd boot
03:27 Cprossu however there's more strange things
03:27 FunkEngine egrsteve: I'll move it to the send pile. :)
03:27 Cprossu didn't you notice the ISA and pci slots?
03:27 Cprossu hahahaha
03:27 tonsofpcs did you know that they made an alpha with no SCSI controller? :)
03:27 egrsteve 120A is a big one
03:27 Cprossu and the fact the floppy drive is a standard pc floppy drive
03:27 FunkEngine netboot?
03:27 Cprossu and the cdrom is an ATAPI rev 1.00
03:28 Cprossu over IDE

03:28 Cprossu tonsofpcs: not from x86 =P
03:29 tonsofpcs no.
03:29 tonsofpcs IDE and PCI aren't X86 native either.
03:29 Cprossu at that time
03:29 Cprossu 1996
03:29 Cprossu it was WEIRD
03:29 Cprossu for a mac to have ISA or IDE or PC floppy ports
03:29 tonsofpcs uh... pretty much every PPC amiga conversion haad ISA and many had PCI.
03:29 Cprossu or PS/2 style keyboards for that matter
03:30 Cprossu well amigas were weird
03:30 tonsofpcs ATAPI was the Sony standard for CDs.
03:30 Cprossu yeah but all that in a box
03:30 Cprossu hell it had an engineering sample Adaptec 2940UW scsi card
03:30 tonsofpcs I don't find it weird at all.  They made PPCs work with COTS.
03:30 tonsofpcs nice
03:30 tonsofpcs I can has scsi card? :D
03:30 Cprossu xD
03:30 Cprossu but yeah they were going to enter production
03:30 Monkeh|Lap Cprossu: Actually, I had a Mac from that era with IDE. ;P

12:21 Bevin Why?
12:23 Nazca you have a set frequency range you can use on adsl, you can't use the same frequency for both up and down... so you have to define a split of "x amount is up, y amount is down"
12:23 Nazca you can tweak it to get more upstream but every megabit you add you have to take from the down stream

13:12 Thermoelectric Oh wow.
13:12 Thermoelectric Upgrade the fuse?
13:13 Experimentonomen i cant

16:42 SparkyProjects Seroster, have you made a 'running thread' joint, basically one piece of conduit is threaded normally, the other piece is given a long thread to take a coupler and lockring. you screw them both on the long thread, then when you want to join the conduits you unscrew the coupler onto the short threaded piece till tight, then back up with the lockring
16:45 Seroster Sounds like fun
16:47 SparkyProjects yeah, something like 50mm of thread
16:47 SparkyProjects It's used when you can't thread one conduit onto another, like if the conduit has a bend

17:07 DeKemp neverminde
17:09 SparkyProjects DeKemp: is that your coil ?
17:09 DeKemp no
17:09 DeKemp i want to make a realy simple small one
17:10 DeKemp mainly to learn the princaple
17:12 SparkyProjects That one looks good to learn the principle, though it is driven by electronics
17:12 DeKemp the mosfet is used for oscilation right?
17:14 SparkyProjects yep, instead of using a mains transformer he used an oscillator to create the AC and subsequently to produce the high voltage, from that point the rest is similar to Tesla's design, except for the bridge rectifier, personally i would leave that out
17:16 DeKemp isn't that cap polarit sensative?
17:16 DeKemp (we use other symbols for as far i can tell)
17:16 SparkyProjects That one might be, but if you use a non-polarised one you don't need the brifge
17:17 DeKemp :)
17:17 SparkyProjects That bridge would have to cope with the high voltage, which could be difficult unless you have hv diodes
17:18 DeKemp hmm, my electronics webshop doesn't have caps over 4kv.
17:18 SparkyProjects That's ok, you can series connect caps to get the rating
17:19 DeKemp ah, forgot that
17:19 SparkyProjects My caps are 2kv, but i use 11KV transformer
17:19 DeKemp so i need a quadzilion 10 volt caps :P
17:20 SparkyProjects Good thing about non polarised is that you may find some in old equipment with higher voltages, or simply make bottle caps
17:20 DeKemp tiny bottle cap :P
17:21 SparkyProjects Don't know about that, my cap bank is about 8pF, that small tesla needs about 440pF
17:22 SparkyProjects That's a lot of bottles
17:22 DeKemp the larger te coil  the smaler the capactinace has to be ?
17:22 SparkyProjects Seems to be
17:24 SparkyProjects Another example, a 2kv coil (using a MOT) would need about 45pF
17:24 SparkyProjects sorry, nF
17:24 killakee hey sparky i have a transformer like that yeallow one on  http://uzzors2k.4hv.org/index.php?page=tabletopteslacoil  but it says 20kv on it ..

21:05 SparkyProjects The art of design is to rate the bank a good amount above the peak working voltage, and allowing for back emg, most i've seen use double the transformer voltage
21:06 DeKemp so the bank can not be fully charged (and overcharged) ?
21:11 SparkyProjects Correct, just like you wouldn't (sensibly) use a 25 volt lytic for a 25 volt supply

23:21 tonsofpcs and by 'across the hall', I mean that to be standing back far enough to close the other door, you have to be able to see both, even with horrible eye problems.
