00:00 seroster SparkyProjects1, how heavy do you think a transformer able to give out 12v 5amps would be?
00:00 seroster Because I have a friggin heap of xformers and I need one, none of them are labeled. =)
00:01 tonsofpcs seroster: input?

00:03 lwq1996 anyone got any amature radio sites?
00:04 tonsofpcs arrl.org
00:04 wannabe1987 Spatula.
00:04 lwq1996 any sites where i can learn about radio
00:04 masterofmonks lwq1996, One thing, you can't have music on amature radio.
00:04 wannabe1987 its against the rules
00:04 masterofmonks lwq1996, arrl.org
00:04 lwq1996 a person has to start out somewhere
00:05 masterofmonks lwq1996, arrl.org
00:05 masterofmonks The ARRL is devoted to teaching *everyone* about radio.
00:06 lwq1996 eh. i should just go to forever broadcasting and see if i can be an intern
00:06 tonsofpcs masterofmonks: [citation needed] (for music)
00:07 seroster Hm
00:07 seroster This one is 14volts unloaded
00:07 seroster Made for 220v and I got closer to 235 in, this IS a 12v trasnformer, but it'll likely give 13 under load.
00:08 seroster SparkyProjects1, do you think my 12v motors will be very sad if I give them 13v?
00:08 masterofmonks tonsofpcs, One moment.
00:08 * tonsofpcs doubts it
00:08 SparkyProjects1 They shoulld be fine
00:08 seroster ARRR
00:08 seroster Good
00:08 SparkyProjects1 Are they AC motors ?
00:08 seroster DC
00:08 lwq1996 i wonder if my school would be interested in me starting a radio station there
00:08 seroster Will need rectification and cap
00:09 SparkyProjects1 Is the output of the trans DC ?
00:09 seroster Nope, AC.
00:09 seroster Ohyes, crap, forgot sqrt2
00:09 SparkyProjects1 OK, if you full wave rectify and add a cap, the volyage will be about 15-16 v
00:09 seroster Crud

00:10 SparkyProjects1 Half wave should drop the voltage a bit

00:11 masterofmonks The only music alloed to be transmitted over amature radio is that which might occur incidentally on the space station.
00:12 tonsofpcs carrier current...
00:12 seroster Just making sure I'm not in the bad end of a stupid mistake... Prim should be higher resistance than sec

00:18 tonsofpcs masterofmonks: amateur television
00:19 masterofmonks It depends on where you are transmiting.
00:19 masterofmonks If you are within the frequencies laid out by part 97, you are subject to part 97.
00:20 tonsofpcs right, but is the audio associated with TV considered "phone"?
00:20 masterofmonks If it is broadcast televeision, it can not be retransmitted.
00:21 seroster Err, isn't isolation trannys supposed to be 1-1?
00:22 seroster Anyway, I found a 12v 80VA which will be plenty for my 50w motors
00:22 masterofmonks Amateur radio not being intended to be broadcast.
00:22 SparkyProjects1 Normally, yes, but it's close enough to be used as one, i was suggesting a possible use
00:23 tonsofpcs it's also useful for something not very tolerant of high voltage on overvoltage lines...
00:24 seroster SparkyProjects1... This will be 16volts dc :<
00:24 lwq1996 anyone know a good starter project for a beginner that wants to learn electronics
00:24 tonsofpcs lwq1996: battery-powered lightbulb.
00:24 lwq1996 huh?
00:25 tonsofpcs a good starter project for a beginner that wants to learn electronics
00:25 tonsofpcs seroster: step down the 230 to 215 first? :)
00:25 lwq1996 ok a beginner with some understanding in electronics and wants something more complicated
00:25 seroster tonsofpcs, It's a BIG hunk of metal.

00:26 seroster ARGH
00:26 masterofmonks lwq1996, go to the local thrift store and fix an old Hi-Fi system.
00:26 lwq1996 that is actually a good one thermo
00:26 seroster lee, find a need. then fill the need
00:27 SparkyProjects1 lwq1996: start with oscillator circuits, at very low frequencies they can flash leds, at higher frequencies they can play sounds
00:27 SparkyProjects1 You could play with wiring one oscillator into the other so osc 1 affects osc 2
00:27 SparkyProjects1 Oscillators are a basis in radio (morse oscilator, rf oscilllator etc)
00:27 masterofmonks But don't worry if morse code makes your eyes cross, most everyone has that reaction at first.
00:29 lwq1996 nah
00:29 lwq1996 probably easy to learn in one day
00:31 masterofmonks Yeah......
00:31 tonsofpcs aanyone know what they call those wire clip things that look like hair clips?
00:31 Damianz I keep being tempted to make a morse to text/text to morse engine thing but apparently processing sound is more complicated than you would have thought, especially when dealing with cruddy quality
00:31 SparkyProjects1 crocodile clips ?
00:32 tonsofpcs SparkyProjects1: no, they're like a piece of metal with a U cut in the middle that's bent through so it acts as a spring to hold the wire in-place
00:32 tonsofpcs you'd screw them into a wooden board
00:32 masterofmonks tonsofpcs, An interesting thing, the 2.4Ghz spectrum falls under amateur control, but you can't use your licence to boost your Wi-Fi since everything transmitted uner part 97 must be in the clear.
00:33 SparkyProjects1 insulation displacement ?
00:33 tonsofpcs masterofmonks: it's ISM....
00:33 masterofmonks Again with the acronyms.

21:33 tonsofpcs hey, need to bond rubber trim on the exterior of my car.  what kind of epoxy would be UV and water stable?
21:34 tonsofpcs (rubber to rubber)
21:42 Coderjoe "I'm repainting the garage, and I want to find out if latex would bond to stucco. So I thought I'd do a search for, I don't know, 'latex bondage'."
21:44 Damianz Rule 34
21:45 Coderjoe tonsofpcs: sorry... your question just reminded me of that "keep your parents off the internet" sketch
21:46 Damianz For rubber to rubber I generally use "rubber cement" which is bascially latex, pretty good for water, not sure about uv
21:52 tonsofpcs Damianz: yea, rubber cement is not UV stable
21:53 tonsofpcs Coderjoe: "Steal from and _then_ lie to your parents"
21:53 tonsofpcs "Ahh! The mousey pointy thingy's gone!"
21:54 Coderjoe Oh yeah, that happens.
21:54 Seroster_ tonsofpcs, avoid silicone
21:55 tonsofpcs Seroster_: yea, I found "Automotive goop", hoping it'll be UV stable
21:55 Seroster_ Worst case scenario it all falls off and you have to do it again =P
21:55 tonsofpcs err, amazing goop
21:55 tonsofpcs Seroster_: yea
21:55 tonsofpcs it's the trim on my Rav4
21:55 Coderjoe what about bonodo? :)
21:55 Coderjoe -o
21:57 tonsofpcs it's a single piece that was made by bonding two pieces of soft rubber together with a harder piece, it runs from the base of the dash up the side of the glass and then into a slot along the top until it is under the luggage rack.  The seam is at the top of the glass but the glass is what holds the top piece down (it's not held down again until under the luggage rack)
21:57 Seroster_ The second you use silicone on the car no paint will ever stick again.
21:57 tonsofpcs of course, it breaks at the seam.
21:58 tonsofpcs it's been broken for years now but it's just finally shrunk/slid in to the point that it started flying off as I drove earlier....

22:13 Coderjoe right, then (or passenger)
22:13 tonsofpcs yes.  passenger side..
