14:18 aubreyja Wow! That source movie is fantastic.  We should post it on the wiki and put an announcement on the forums about it
14:19 aubreyja "gsource movie"
14:20 mgage_ I think it's gource
14:20 aubreyja ah
14:20 aubreyja you want me to post it on the wiki?
14:21 mgage_ I've only used the settings that Remy sent us in his email -- you can apparently change those quite a bit --
14:21 mgage_ I guess so -- upload it to our youtube channel and then post the link.
14:21 aubreyja ah, good idea
14:22 mgage_ However I also think this might interest someone in adding production values to it -- perhaps changing some parameters so that some of the pg activity isn't cut off -- perhaps adding some narration about the history of webwork
14:23 mgage_ on the other hand if we wait for some one to do all that we might wait forever -- so let's put something up now
14:23 aubreyja my wife and I are going to 'sync' our summer travel schedules today so I'll get back t you about coming up early for Rochester this afternoon.
14:23 mgage_ you can leave some room on the page with the link so that we can at least label the cast of characters building the software base
14:23 mgage_ ok
14:24 aubreyja I think posting it now is good, but also creating a narrated history is a great idea.  Let's start a doc or something for a script and just build it up over time.
14:25 mgage_ must admit the first time I watched the gource shot all the way through I was pretty impressed -- it does a good job of capturing the history of the project
14:25 aubreyja yeah, and the structure of the code too
14:26 mgage_ ok -- if you go back and read Remy's email you'll see that you can run the gource script from the logs pretty easily.  in order to create an mp4 file I had download some extra software.  homebrew didn't work but macports did.  I didn't try to get the needed software downloaded on the freebsd machine.
14:27 mgage_ I also haven't investigated how the log files are created.  Remy gives a quick hint and I'm sure there are all kinds of gource docs and tutorials.  we want a similar movie of building the NPL --- I think that will be even more interesting
14:28 aubreyja Ah, yeah, I'll see if I can give that a try - I'm impressed enough to want to figure out how it works :)
14:28 mgage_ I'm headed in to school in a few minutes -- I'm biking now so it will take me about 40 minutes.  I think we have a webconference today?

17:35 aubreyja getting there: webwork.maa.org/planet
19:52 mgage looks good so far -- you can use http://michaelgage.blogspot.com/
19:52 mgage if that helps
19:52 mgage finished with senior checks
19:54 mgage and you can use this for reference http://planet.teachingopensource.org/
19:56 mgage and this is the wiki page they use to allow people to sign up for the blog http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/Planet_Feed_List
19:56 mgage you can email Remy if you need more details -- if he doesn't know how it's set up he will know who to ask
19:56 mgage aubreyja: hi
19:58 mgage I'll be away for an hour and a bit . Then I'll check back.
20:15 aubreyja Hi Mike - around?
21:05 aubreyja I'll be back on later - I'm looking at PeriodicRerandomization.pl
21:05 aubreyja in Translator.pm in the initialize subroutine is $safe_cmpt -> share('%envir')
21:07 aubreyja which gives access to %envir in the problem, but only when it is first accessed. However, on submitting answers although values in %envir change, those changes are not available to the safe compartment
21:08 aubreyja if we could reshare %envir or update it some other way in the safe_compartment, it would make Paul's macro work much better since $numOfAttempts would always be right
21:36 mgage hmmm -- I'lll look when I get home, but I'm not sure that is right. I think the new values of envir are -- or at least are supposed to be available.  It's possible that the switch over to using PGcore produced a bug like this.  That change over isn't complete yet and I would not be surprised if there were a number of bugs.  The funny counting system of $numOfAttempts is hereditary and was supposed to deal with the problem of "when I first look at
21:36 mgage problem that my first attempt (that I'm about to enter) or is that a zero attempt?"  If I get it right on the first try is that 0 attempts or 1 attempt (currently I think it is zero attempts).  I'm in favor of rethinking the rational for numOfAttempts from beginning so that it is more rational and then fixing the things that depend on it so that they are no longer a rube goldberg collection of work arounds.
