Time Nick Message
00:01 mgage I can't replicate it on courses.webwork.maa.org
00:02 mgage it's running 2.5.0 (no beta)
00:03 ionparticle could the database created by bin/NPL-update
00:03 ionparticle be out of sync with the actual existing NPL files?
00:04 mgage only if the update hasn't been run recently (since the problems themselves were upgraded) -- that's likely on hosted2
00:04 mgage I should check and do that.
00:04 ionparticle if I run NPL-update
00:05 djun joined #webwork
00:05 ionparticle it should fix any such issues?
00:05 mgage courses should be up to date.  I don't see why an out of date NPL database would cause this problem off the top of my head
00:05 ionparticle me neither
00:05 ionparticle lol
00:05 mgage but it's worth updating the database in any case
00:05 djun hello
00:06 mgage hi djun
00:06 ionparticle hi
00:06 mgage actually update the NPL first then run NPL-update
00:07 mgage djun -- ionparticle is getting when adding a problem from the Library Browser to a Problem set, Firefox will error out with "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." on certain problems
00:07 mgage have you seen this before?  the problem is Library/maCalcDB/setVectors2DotProduct/UR_VC_1_10.pg
00:08 mgage by the way do you two know each other -- I think you are both in Vancouver
00:10 djun i missed the first part of the conversation re: DB and NPL… what was the issue?
00:10 djun i'll try it now...
00:11 mgage using version 2.5.0(beta) when adding a problem from the Library Browser to a Problem set, Firefox will error out with "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." on certain problems
00:12 djun don't recognize the nick but maybe I know you in the real world :)
00:12 ionparticle I work with Pan Luo, if you recognize that name
00:12 ionparticle I don't usually do webwork support, lol
00:13 djun Sure, I know Pan
00:15 mgage ionparticle:  didn't you create the webwork pluggin for shibboleth (or one of the authentication systems)
00:15 djun good to meet you.  I'm with the Stat dept at UBC, was with Math for the past 3 years.
00:15 djun So, I added that problem to a new test set with no errors or messages...
00:16 ionparticle no, that was Pan
00:16 ionparticle I did other webwork coding stuff for UBC
00:17 mgage ah -- ok -- I got the contributions from the two of you combined in my head I guess.
00:17 ionparticle lol
00:18 ionparticle yeah, djun, it's a weird bug
00:18 ionparticle cause it only shows up in Firefox for me
00:18 ionparticle works fine in Chrome
00:18 mgage and only that one problem? or are there others.
00:18 ionparticle there are others
00:18 djun any messages in the server logs for this issue, by the way? (sorry if you've covered all this before)
00:19 mgage not yet
00:19 ionparticle nope, no errors
00:19 ionparticle and the verf server doesn't show this error error
00:20 ionparticle only on production
00:20 ionparticle heh
00:20 ionparticle oh, wait
00:20 ionparticle you know what
00:20 ionparticle might be a problem with the load balancer
00:21 mgage hmm -- seems funny that it would always do this on the same problem
00:24 djun_ joined #webwork
00:36 djun Ah.  Got "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."  on FF 14.0.1 (MacOS 10.7.4) while adding the problem using (the old) Library Browser
00:37 mgage what version of webwork are you using
00:37 djun this is on the CTLT production server (webwork.elearning.ubc.ca/webwork2)
00:38 ionparticle yeah, same one I'm on
00:38 ionparticle the user who reported this was using FF 10
00:38 mgage hmmm  --- ok --- I can't get it on courses.webwork.maa.org which is using 2..5.0 (slightly older software)
00:41 ionparticle might try updating to 2.5.0 tomorrow
00:42 ionparticle for now though, using the Library Browser 2 is a good enough workaround, lol
00:43 ionparticle have a nice night, I'm off :)
00:50 djun an odd error.
00:51 djun same client side setup, tried on my own server (old/custom version of WW) with no issues
00:51 djun thinking load balancer/caching/firewall might be behind this
00:51 mgage yep -- it may be a bit difficult to track down  -- if it's the server some kind of load balancing might be involved
00:52 mgage see what happens when you move to a slightly newer version of the software.
00:52 djun BTW, I have installed Drupal on webwork.maa.org (doc server)
00:52 mgage if it was a load balancer I would expect it to happen at random times -- not always on the same problem
00:52 mgage thanks very much
00:53 djun if you add 209.222.159.184 drupal-dev.webwork.maa.org
00:53 djun to your hosts file, you should be able to see the site
00:53 mgage does drupal have a plugin that would work for storing literature references ?   the current database in moodle is fussy -- and doesn't look all that good anyway
00:54 djun possibly… is there an existing site that does something like what you have in mind?
00:54 djun there's quite a few modules that deal with books, for example (via ASIN and other Amazon API interactions)
00:54 mgage here is what we have currently http://webwork.maa.org/moodle/mod/data/view.php?id=9
00:55 djun there is a bibliography module
00:55 mgage a static version is at http://webwork.maa.org/publications.html   -- it is rendered from tex -- but you can't update it from the web
00:55 djun yeah, we can do better than that :)
00:57 mgage the next iteration is http://webwork.maa.org/pubstest2.html  which i being fed by mendel  -- that might be overkill and it is probably not free for the use we want to make of it .
00:57 mgage Paying for it is not a problem but at the moment it doesn't quite do what want either.
00:58 mgage In particular it is hard to control where the links go -- and since many of references are not to standard journals or other databases mendely gets confused
00:59 djun hmm
00:59 djun http://drupal.org/project/biblio might be one part of a solution
01:00 mgage sorry it's mendeley   -- it's the tool that tyler suggested at first   -- there are some other open source clones that might actually work better for us but if there is a simple solution in drupal and we already have that set up then we could do that
01:00 djun seems like import / export is fairly well supported
01:00 mgage can we allow several people to update it from the web? (but not all)
01:01 mgage the example http://liiscience.org/biblio looks pretty good
01:03 djun re updates: yes, permissions are highly configurable in Drupal
01:04 mgage looks like you can edit it from the web   -- mendeley has fancy auto look up that will find your citation in its scholarly databases -- but for most of our entries this doesn't do us much good -- so hand entry -- or upload from files such as bibtex is fine
01:04 mgage or test
01:05 mgage text
01:08 mgage would it take long to install the blio module into the drupal at webwork.maa.org   -- if/when you get some time?   I could add some entries from the stuff we have got and then we could run the various options by Vicki, Tyler and the others and see what they think.

01:10 mgage I can reach  drupal-dev.webwork.maa.org
01:11 mgage clicking on webwork seems to take me out of drupal
01:11 djun which link?
01:12 djun sure, I'll test out biblio modules
01:12 mgage front page -- upper right quadrant -- near the bottom
01:12 mgage of the quadrant
01:13 mgage SIGMAAS and sections also go outside drupal
01:15 mgage the amy cohen link in the lower left is bad -- perhaps thats supposed to be a mathDL heading? -- that's what it links to
01:16 djun You're definitely not seeing what I'm seeing :)
01:16 djun Do you see a green gradient banner for drupal-dev.webwork.maa.org?
01:17 mgage no --- blue   at the top -- the quck links has a green gradient banner http://drupal-dev.webwork.maa.org/
01:17 djun did you add the entry to your local machine's /etc/hosts file?
01:17 djun 209.222.159.184 drupal-dev.webwork.maa.org
01:17 djun otherwise you'll hit the catch-all (default) server
01:18 mgage ok -- that's what I got
01:18 mgage the default server.
01:19 mgage hmm where do I enter this?  http://209.222.159.184   takes me to bugzilla
01:21 djun on your laptop, edit /etc/hosts and add that line.
01:21 djun that will allow the client name lookup to find an address (since we don't have an entry in DNS yet)
01:23 djun mike, do you have the current biblio entries in some kind of file?
01:23 mgage do I need to reset something?  -- also since this is a mac it's possible that that /etc/hosts file is the one that is used.
01:24 mgage I think I have it in a couple of formats  -- parts of it if not all of it.  let me check
01:24 djun hmm, shouldn't need to reset anything
01:25 djun i just open a terminal, and like so:
01:25 djun sudo emacs /etc/hosts
01:25 mgage it's at /private/etc/hosts on macs
01:26 djun I think there's a symlink
01:26 djun when you ping drupal-dev.webwork.maa.org, do you get replies?
01:27 mgage ok -- I have it now
01:27 djun ah, good :)
01:28 djun it's such a mac web-dev hack
01:28 mgage yeah -- I think it was already there on the NeXT machines if I remember correctly -- you get used to searching for it when something doesn't work
01:29 mgage I applied for an account :-)
01:29 mgage got an auto reply already
01:32 djun great
01:34 mgage what format do you want?  will bibtex do?
01:35 mgage also can do RIS and EndNote

01:36 mgage hi paul
01:36 Paul_Pearson Hi Mike.
01:37 mgage just got email -- hang on a minute
01:37 Paul_Pearson I just sent you an email.
01:38 Paul_Pearson I need to get in the habit of logging on to IRC first (so that you won't get so much email from me).
01:39 mgage you usually have to hang out for a bit -- I leave the monitor on -- but I'm not always watching it :-)
01:39 mgage I have the same problem -- not sure why -- I'll change password
01:40 mgage I've changed swanson -- try it
01:41 Paul_Pearson I just logged in to swanson.
01:42 mgage you should be able to login to _pearson with your old password -- I just changed the name -- I didn't reset the password.  You probably can't click the link in my email because i edited it
01:43 Paul_Pearson I'm into the "pearson" course, too, using the old password (I should've thought of that).
01:43 Paul_Pearson Thanks!
01:43 djun mike: bibtex should be fine. RIS and EndNote are supported too.
01:43 mgage djun: ok -- I sent bibtex  in an email -- you should have it now
01:44 mgage paul: the edwards course was ok?
01:44 djun thanks, got it and will try imported once I have the module installed, tonight or tomorrow
01:44 mgage ty -- no great hurry
01:45 Paul_Pearson @mike: all three courses are now accessible to me.  Thank you!
01:47 mgage np -- I have test on one of the newer versions 2.5.2 I think -- it should have achievements and possibly essay answers -- (at least eventually)   2.5.3 will have Aaron's white board but that is proving a bit more difficult to integrate.  let me know what you find -- if the bugs are small I'll fix them -- otherwise I'll backoff to one of the older versions
01:47 djun heading for home.  'Night, all.
01:48 mgage 'night
