15:23 mgage hi
15:23 mgage aubreyja: hi
15:24 aubreyja Hi - how's it going?
15:24 mgage ok -- I spent yesterday rebuilding a hard drive on my main computer -- it was backed up but it still take time.
15:25 mgage I'm headed in to school to help Mark Herman upgrade WW at Rochester for the spring semester.
15:25 aubreyja I spent yesterday changing all of my passwords :)
15:25 mgage You  said you were building a RH server?  what caused the switch from freeBSD?
15:26 aubreyja well, there were some lingering performance issues that we could never nail down that others with larger servers on linux don't seem to have
15:26 mgage a good idea -- but one I tend not to follow.  :-)
15:26 aubreyja (I got excited about lastpass (.com))
15:27 mgage I've been discussing with Paul Seeburger at MCC who is having trouble getting his IT staff to put up WW because it won't run under SELinux.
15:27 aubreyja (and now every site I have a login to has a completely random and unique password)
15:27 mgage I've seen that -- or similar things.
15:27 aubreyja our people seem to disable selinux as a matter of course here
15:28 mgage and that is what I told him -- it seems near universal.
15:28 aubreyja ironically, my devel server is centrally managed (also rh) but my production server is completely mine (+sysdmin)
15:29 mgage The one defender so far has been Hoss Firooznia -- our sys admin here  -- who things it might be helpful.  He tends to be pretty conservative about security but he's worth listening too -- it's possible that a thorough setup script would set all the permissions you need in order for SELinux to work.
15:30 aubreyja I've been slow about setting up the devel server, because it's a shared environment with a bunch of virtual hosts, so I'm a little out of my depth but slowly making progress
15:30 aubreyja two things about selinux: fwiw, I looked at how lon-capa handles it, and they also disable it
15:30 mgage something to keep in mind. -- if you or your IT people get bored setting up RH.  -- we also might try to see if some of the RH experts -- there were a few at POSSE would be interested in the challenge.
15:31 aubreyja also, the rh documentation actually has a pretty extensive docs on selinux set up for web apps, mysql, etc., at some point I plan to read those
15:32 aubreyja I also now have an iptables firewall script I put together that we could potentially distribute to help people set up sane firewalls on linux
15:33 aubreyja it drops all traffic except in going/out going http, mail and ssh, and logs all dropped packets
15:33 mgage I've been trying to find alternatives for Paul.  He can use hosted2 but it's going to be pretty unstable this spring.  I tried to get him on our production server (that is how Hoss got in on the conversation).  There is no security issue but Hoss says our current server is getting somewhat maxed out and he also worries about hosting courses from other schools with other schedules --- both valid points.
15:33 mgage that sounds cool.  --- I've got to head to school --- I'll be back on in an hour or so.
15:33 aubreyja Do you have any idea how big paul's classes are? I could host him if they aren't too big
15:33 mgage 40
15:33 aubreyja oh, easy, if he wants I could host him
15:33 mgage I'll suggest that if it's ok with you.
15:34 aubreyja sure thing - paul's a good person to have around
15:35 mgage Yep.  That's why I've been trying to help him out.  Some of the problem at UR is not just 40 students but whether this means a precedent to help neighboring institutions -- and some are for it and some are against it at least for now -- and it will take a while to work itself out.
15:36 mgage ok -- talk to you in an hour

21:09 mgage aubreyja: hi
21:10 mgage sorry I didn't get back on line earlier -- spent all afternoon getting courses ready -- I'm headed home now and will be on this evening.

22:22 mgage_ aubreyja: hi
22:22 aubreyja hi
22:23 mgage_ sorry to be away all afternoon -- but we got the courses set up -- reasonably well.  They are using the svn client for the github so that was somewhat interesting -- I have to go find where the instructions are for doing this and update them.
22:24 mgage_ About Paul -- let's hold off doing anything for a couple of days -- there are some political issues here which might get sorted out in the next two days and then I can either host his course here or we can have you host it.
22:24 aubreyja no sweat - glad you got it to work. One of my projects over the next couple of weeks is to weed out references to svn and cvs in standard install docs
22:24 aubreyja sounds good
22:25 mgage_ ok -- if run across descriptions of using the svn client you can send it my way and I'll rewrite that portion.
22:25 aubreyja kk
22:27 mgage_ I'm teaching multivariable calculus this semester so I hope to have a little bit of time to make some contributions to that.  Mark Herman is teaching matrix linear algebra/ODE next semester -- where are the best sources of problems there in your opinion.
22:28 aubreyja Well, this would probably be a good opportunity to check out John T's sage problems
22:28 mgage_ for multivariable calc I'm looking to JT, Paul Pearson and Gavin LaRose's problems
22:28 aubreyja (for multivariable)
22:29 aubreyja for linear algebra, I can grab you our collection developed here last semester (partly old problems, partly new)
22:29 aubreyja and there is the prep course on test
22:29 mgage_ oh -- ok  I intend to look there.  Beezer has been doing linear algebra stuff -- but some of that requires 2.5.2 and they are updated to that yet.
22:30 aubreyja Those are probably the best over all
22:30 mgage_ your collection would be welcome and I'll point mark to the PREP course as well and encourage him to look at that.
22:30 aubreyja there was also a multivariable prep group
22:30 mgage_ yeah -- that's right -- JT was leader of that but he might have gone beyond what is on test at the moment -- this is an opportunity to help that model course catch up
22:31 aubreyja That would be great
22:31 aubreyja I'm fairly sure he would have put any updates either back in the prep course or on the wiki
22:31 mgage_ kk
22:32 aubreyja When do your courses start? We don't start until the day after MLK day
22:33 mgage_ we start the week before that on the 16th
