15:20 mgage__ aubreyja: hi
15:21 aubreyja oops - wrong window :) - hi - good morning
15:21 aubreyja (just greeted the catalyst people)
15:21 mgage__ morning -- quick question -- did you ever get in touch with the Yoav Freud at UCSD (I think I've got that right)
15:22 mgage__ I'd kind of like to meet him if he is around San Diego next week.
15:22 aubreyja Ah, not a second time - do you want to go ahead and write to him? I can forward you my last message to him
15:22 mgage__ please do -- I just wanted to know what stage conversations were at
15:23 aubreyja on it's way - just a sec
15:23 mgage ty
15:23 aubreyja sent
15:23 mgage how are things going there?  -- my plan plan this morning is to get the preliminaries for my diff manifolds grad class in place
15:24 aubreyja great - just getting my new servers set up, and I'm having a very light teaching load next semester (1 course) so I plan to do a lot of webwork stuff
15:26 mgage great -- how up to speed do I need to be on the 501 stuff next week in San Diego? -- can I put off reading some of that stuff for a month or so?
15:27 aubreyja Yes, not too up to speed, we're still at the planning stage - the reading is just technical legal/tax details
15:27 aubreyja important, but not essential for where we are right now
15:27 mgage k -- I'm very glad you've taken the lead on this
15:28 aubreyja Flora seems very hesitant about the idea of a non-profit - she had a bad experience with Merlot I guess.
15:29 mgage the advice I got 10 years ago was also pretty discouraging -- but I was never sure it was that trustworthy
15:30 aubreyja I've been associated with some non-profits that lead me to believe it's not all that hard. You've got to pay attention to some details, but people like us can do it just fine as long as we don't make it hard (e.g. like having paid employees, or directors getting compensation)
15:31 mgage I'm willing to try -- but I'm glad to follow you on this :-)
15:33 aubreyja I'll try not to get us sent to federal prison :)
15:33 mgage cool -- at least make sure it has wifi
15:33 aubreyja (although, we'd probably have plenty of time to do some math)

18:58 mgage goehle: hi
18:58 goehle hey
18:59 goehle how was your holidays?
18:59 mgage ok -- I'm back at normal work now -- done with my bridging fellowship to CS
18:59 mgage will you be at San Diego next week (JMM?)
19:00 goehle I will not
19:00 goehle but I'm planning on making it out to the Raleigh thing
19:02 mgage ok.  wanted to make sure you were aware of various events  if you were.  -- Sorry not to see you but there will be other times.  one of them is that we'll be organizing a code camp to be held in Raleigh, NC -- tentatively around March 8 weekend.  would you be interested?
19:02 mgage available?
19:03 goehle definitely
19:03 mgage great
19:03 goehle I've also only got 2 preps this semester, so I won't be so swamped
19:03 mgage hope your holidays went well and you're more or less ready for next semester.
19:03 goehle getting there
19:03 mgage that's good.
19:03 goehle setting up webwork for the dept now
19:04 goehle I've got a script that takes the csv's generated by banner and makes lst files
19:04 mgage I helped do that yesterday -- using 2.5.1.1 version
19:04 mgage you might contribute that to the wiki -- let me see where it goes
19:05 goehle how standard are banner reports?
19:05 mgage http://webwork.maa.org/wiki/Category:Scripts
19:05 mgage a number of people use Banner
19:05 goehle and it wouldn't be hard to modify it to work with any reasonable input file
19:05 mgage cool
19:05 goehle well, to be specific
19:06 goehle if you had a particular format for an input file you could modify it
19:08 mgage__ joined #webwork
19:17 goehle how do I make a new page for the wiki?
19:18 mgage type the title in the search bar and then look at the bottom where it says create new page for this "title"
19:18 goehle thanks
19:18 mgage to place the page in a category you add a line at the bottom
19:19 mgage [[Category:Scripts]]    for example
19:19 goehle now
19:19 goehle nice
19:19 goehle now all I have to do is add comments
19:19 goehle (to my script)
19:19 mgage thanks
19:27 goehle hmm
19:27 goehle how do I get it to be formatted more nicely?
19:30 mgage put a space (two spaces?) before the script -- that puts it in preformat.
19:30 mgage mode  -- you should be able to look at some of the existing scripts in edit mode which will give you the idea
19:30 goehle it wants to turn the # into numbering
19:31 mgage not if there is a space first
19:31 goehle I'm lokign at WwclearAnonymous
19:31 goehle and I cant see any formating stuff
19:31 goehle http://webwork.maa.org/w/index.php?title=WwclearAnonymous&action=edit#.UOXbie7MtVI
19:31 mgage notice there is  space before every line
19:32 goehle aaaah
19:32 goehle I didn't even see that
19:32 mgage that puts everything in the gray box.
19:32 mgage you can do that with a text editor before you paste it in the webpage
19:33 goehle hmm
19:33 goehle now I have lots of grey boxes
19:33 goehle probably because of newlines with no space
19:33 mgage that just means that you have some lines with out a space in them
19:33 mgage yep
19:34 mgage__ joined #webwork
19:34 goehle how do I escape stuff
19:34 goehle <SOURCE> has some special meaning to the wiki
19:35 goehle but I want it to be literal
19:36 mgage the editor page has some links about markdown at the bottom -- for example http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Editing
19:37 mgage <nowiki>  might do what you need
19:37 mgage you can also try a backslash but I don't think that works
19:38 goehle http://webwork.maa.org/wiki/ClasslistGenerator#.UOXeJu7MtVI
19:38 goehle got it
19:39 goehle <pre></pre> is good for stuff you dont want marked up
19:39 mgage I should have guessed that would work -- thanks -- looks nice
19:39 goehle np

20:10 aubreyja goehle - if you're putting code up on the wiki <code lang="…"> should trigger syntax highlighting and acceptable formatting
20:10 goehle ah, good to know
20:10 goehle I was just putting up a script I use to get banner cvs files into lst files
20:10 aubreyja cool
20:10 mgage headed home -- talk to you guys a bit later
20:10 aubreyja ttyl
