18:41 mgage_ aubreyja: hi
18:42 aubreyja Hi - just taking care of some loose ends - sounds like we're converging on a git process?
18:42 aubreyja update webwork2/pg now btw
18:43 mgage_ I think we're aways off yet.  I have to reply to Davide's comment this morning -- and I'll send it on to the list.
18:43 aubreyja btw, I think your last couple of messages went to ww-bb not webwork-devel
18:44 mgage_ good -- we need to Lars know -- and have him retest his upgrade -- he was having trouble because pg didn't have Davide's patch but webwork2 did.
18:44 aubreyja (between you and Davide about git)
18:44 mgage_ I didn't check closely -- I'll forward the batch to webwork-devel
18:45 aubreyja in pg-dev we just have master, but in pg we have pg2.5.1 and master...
18:45 mgage_ My main concern is how we manage testing -- we have a kind of unusual community in that regard -- not the same as sage for example
18:45 aubreyja should I make pg-dev/master = pg/master and pg/pg2.5.1.1?
18:46 mgage_ I had 2.5.1, 2.5.2 and more in mine but they are all the same -- I think we can consolidate everything in master in both pg and pg-dev  at least for now.
18:47 mgage_ I think we should leave it at 2.5.1 --there is no patch really and I don't think we need to keep the numbers exactly the same.
18:47 aubreyja ok, should I pull down your pg-dev then and merge in your 2.5.1 to pg/pg2.5.1?
18:48 aubreyja or is it just the same as pg-dev?
18:48 mgage_ I don't think you need to -- I think openwebwork version is update -- perhaps more uptodate than my version
18:48 mgage_ in particular Davide put his patches directly into openwebwork
18:49 mgage_ I believe I've pulled all of them, but I haven't done extensive testing
18:50 mgage_ The tensions in git flow are between two many branches that have to be kept in sync  and having enough branches so that ffeatures can be tested by a reasonably sized group -- pretty close to the time when the features are being developed.
18:50 aubreyja ok, I've just merged pg-dev/master into pg/master and pg/pg2.5.1 - pushing now...
18:50 mgage_ k
18:52 aubreyja ok, looks like we're up to date.
18:54 aubreyja brb
18:57 aubreyja oh, interesting - my push to github seems to have registered with bugzilla:
18:57 aubreyja http://bugs.webwork.maa.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2043
18:58 aubreyja maybe I set that up at some point :)
18:58 mgage_ I see that -- looks like you put a hook on github for that? I wonder if  it is better to put that on the webwork2-dev and pg-dev repos?
18:58 mgage_ Did you read the exchange with jason grout last night?
18:59 aubreyja yeah, I probably did that when we first got set up.
18:59 aubreyja well, the only thing is that if people are submitting bugs against webwork2, then it would get confusing to have them see such replies about updates to webwork2-dev.
19:00 aubreyja Of course, we can just put a new component in bugzilla for people to report bugs agains webwork2-dev and webwork2
19:00 aubreyja yes, he had some great input
19:00 mgage_ yes -- one of the many pros and cons about how many branches to keep -- in addition to writing some more for webwork-dev I should start a decision table :-) on the wiki
19:01 aubreyja I'm sort of staying on the sidelines here - I don't think there is a perfect solution, we just need clarity, so I'm happy to try any of the potential final (clearly articulated)  procedures
19:01 mgage_ yep -- it was easy to help him out.  It was a bit more trouble with lars because I felt I had to check the basics like restarting (which I have forgotten to do in my time) and I'm afraid he was impatient that I didn't immediately know what was wrong.
19:02 mgage_ we may need some people on the sidelines -- and it's important to rest sometimes.
19:04 mgage_ I seem to have chosen this battle -- not so much the git procedure but how often to release and when -- I'm getting very frustrating that little of the software in the last two years is getting generally distributed -- it will be hard to keep people producing things for others if they don't see the fruits of their labor fairly quickly. Things may end of like Aaron (and to some extend Bill Wheeler) where smaller projects fork off and th
19:04 mgage_ results are never gathered back in.
19:04 aubreyja I was glad to hear that github can create tarbals from branches.  Maybe we should do that and put them on source forge.  I think it's not uncommon for university firewalls to prevent outgoing https/ssh connections
19:05 aubreyja yeah, that's right - there has been a lot of nice stuff done that should be on the maa servers and getting out there.
19:06 mgage_ Could be.  Cetainly not here.  The first thing we did in my CS javaScript class thi semester was to create EC2 instances and github accounts for ourselves.  All assignments are submitted through github and demonstrated via the EC2 instance.
19:07 mgage_ right -- the MAA servers are on 2+ year old software (at least courses is).  I think we'll need to finish up any remaining details on your install script and start advertising that as well.
19:07 aubreyja that's cool -but I'll bet you used ec2 because the university IT people didn't want to let them use in-house servers for development.  The case I'm talking about is a locally hosted server behind a university firewall.  This was a problem at Winona for example (couldn't push out to github on the winona network)
19:08 aubreyja btw, just turning to updating ftcourses - the code's there, just have to do the config files
19:08 mgage_ that's probably true
19:08 mgage_ ok -- you're going for ww2.5.1.1?
19:08 aubreyja yes, my install script!  I'm pretty happy with where it's at right now
19:08 aubreyja yep, ww2.5.1.1
19:09 aubreyja I saw that Jason had some trouble with the prereq installation, but I want more people testing it out.
19:09 mgage_ cool -- is your install script on openwebwork yet?
19:10 aubreyja no just in my github.  I want to be sure RH/CenOS and ubuntu are nailed down.
19:10 mgage_ ok -- I didn't read that part I guess.    Florian had trouble with Test::CSV and JSON both of which need to be added for the new front end UI's
19:10 mgage_ kk
19:10 aubreyja Fedora is, ubuntu I thought was, but for RH I need to detect the version and install the EPEL repos in the prereqs script.  (Although I bet the actual ww_install.pl works fine)
19:12 aubreyja the other issues are cpan configuration - some of the default choices are dumb (well one default choice is) so I want to include a cpan config file to use when the install script runs
19:13 mgage_ kk
19:18 mgage_ A couple of people you could ask for advice:  http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/User:Chris_Tyler  -- he taught the first POSSE and works with Fedora a lot
19:21 mgage_ Ralph Bean was another former Redhat engineer at the POSSE we attended together. http://threebean.org/
19:35 aubreyja_ joined #webwork
19:56 aubreyja ah, thanks - I remember bean
19:57 mgage_ You remember Tyler from the year before as well -- via long distance --- he set up an account for us to try to create Redhat makefiles
19:57 mgage_ distro releases
20:58 mgage_ aubreyja: Do you think we should try to talk to redhat connected person about the code camp in raleigh?  that's their home base.
20:59 aubreyja That's a great idea - maybe start with ralph bean - perhaps he can point us in the right direction
21:00 mgage_ k -- I can try to set up a contact there -- what about Mel?  did you interact with her enough to feel comfortable about seeking advice?
21:02 aubreyja sure - I'm sure she'd have some advice - should we write to both of them?
21:02 mgage_ yes -- I'll email Ralph Bean -- can you take Mel?
21:02 aubreyja sure thing

21:29 mgage_ aubreyja: did JT invite Jeff Holt to Raleigh?  I just invited John Jones.
21:30 mgage_ I can send a note to Jeff as well
21:31 mgage_ hi davide
21:45 dpvc Hi Mike
21:45 mgage_ hi -- I'm catching up on my letter writing.  Do you know whether you will be able to make it to Raleigh?
21:46 dpvc It looks like I should be able to do it.
21:46 mgage_ great
21:47 mgage_ aubreyja: hi -- did you see my question about Jeff?
