20:43 goehle hey mgage
20:44 36DACV9T1 hi geoff
20:45 36DACV9T1 goehle: hang on -- let me get my identity back
20:45 36DACV9T1 left #webwork
20:45 goehle hey
20:45 36DACV9T1 joined #webwork
20:46 mgage_ joined #webwork
20:46 mgage_ goehle: ok that's better
20:46 mgage_ what's up?
20:46 goehle :D
20:47 goehle that instructor serge emailed me to say that he still cant use achievements on the maa servers
20:47 goehle I remember jason saying that he was having trouble upgrading
20:47 goehle did that ever end up happening?
20:48 mgage_ let me check -- there has been a lot of activity this last week (and the wiki server was actually down for a while earlier today)
20:48 goehle Yeah, i"ve noticed the maa sites having trouble
20:50 mgage_ I'm pretty sure the machine   courses.webwork.maa.org is running a version of webwork that doesn't have achievements --  remind which url serge is using?
20:50 mgage_ achievements are enabled on test.webwork.maa.org
20:50 goehle I'm not sure he ever gave me his course url
20:51 goehle *quote*
20:51 goehle My name is Serge Ballif. I am teaching with WeBWorK at Nevada State College for the first time this semester. I want to enable your achievements. I think the idea of gameifiying the course is outstanding. My course is hosted by the MAA, and I can’t find any MathAchievements files in my file manager.
20:51 mgage_ kk -- let me see if I can find something that looks like Nevada State College
20:51 goehle no worries
20:51 goehle if its not possible
20:51 goehle or if he needs to move over to test
20:51 goehle thats fine
20:52 goehle but I wanted to give him a response one way or the other
20:53 mgage_ looks like he is on their new free-trial server: https://ftcourses.webwork.maa.org/webwork2/ft-nevadastate-math181/
20:54 mgage_ and that is also running a really old version of webwork -- possibly 2.5.0 or earlier from the SVN repository -- in any case it doesn't have the identifying version number that starts with ww2.5.1.1
20:54 goehle ok, so he definitely doesn't have it
20:56 mgage_ I don't have admin privileges on that machine (this is good -- MAA should be taking over duties) so I can't transfer his course to test myself -- but he could send a note to webwork@maa.org and ask that his course be transferred to the test machine.  He can
20:56 mgage_ tell them that I"m willing to host his course -- but we'll need to coordinate the transfer so that none of his students can access the course while it is being moved over.
20:57 mgage_ actually more than willing -- the more people using the achievements feature to test it out the better as far as I'm concerned.
20:59 goehle great, I'll let him know
20:59 goehle while we are on the topic I wanted to let you knwo that you can get preprints of the achievement paper at http://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/CsVhxCTr4CeRc75BWgrY/full
20:59 goehle however, the formatting is terrible and none of the figures/tables are in the right place
21:00 goehle I also wanted to ask a question about searching the library
21:00 mgage_ thanks.  would you like this posted after your blog post?
21:00 mgage_ go ahead
21:01 goehle umm
21:01 goehle the formatting is so ugly I almost want to say knkow
21:01 mgage_ the formatting isn't beautiful but it can be read without difficulty
21:01 goehle say no, rather
21:01 goehle yeah
21:01 goehle and I did promise to write a blog post
21:02 mgage_ oh right -- I posted the one on essay questions -- that's attracting attention also --
21:02 goehle I'll put this link in the post (which is incoming, eventually )
21:02 mgage_ kk
21:03 goehle oh, and I have a prof here is using webwork for our 101 class, which does a lot of standard stuff like statistics, but also some other topics that are less standard, like barcodes and ceasar ciphers
21:03 mgage_ I think some info even if not perfect, is better than no info.  this is the official link they point to: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10511970.2012.736451
21:03 mgage_ I'd use that
21:04 goehle it looks pretty much the same as the other one to me
21:04 mgage_ that sounds interesting
21:05 mgage_ I think it reaches the same address but the path might be more permanent -- yours looks like a preprint link, this looks like it references the actual publication
21:05 goehle its also an online course so webwork is a natural fit
21:06 goehle however, I dont know how she shoudl search the library for "bar code" problems or something that isn't from a standard text
21:06 goehle ah sure
21:07 mgage_ I'm willing to guarantee that there aren't any problems on barcodes.  You could help out
21:07 goehle Thats the plan for problems that dont exist
21:07 mgage_ by grepping your library repo for barcodes    grep -R "barcode*" *
21:07 goehle ah
21:07 goehle that would be a low level search for this kind of thing
21:07 mgage_ I don't think anything less than that would find it.
21:08 goehle nice
21:08 mgage_ unfortunately it's only available if you "own" your own copy of webwork
21:08 mgage_ or at least the library -- and know how to use unix tools
21:08 goehle yeah,  I'm not sure its usually a problemf or people using the library
21:09 goehle but it makes things awkward
21:09 mgage_ I would have her put this question out on the forum however -- surprising replies come from such posts. there may well be problems like this out there that we aren't yet aware of
21:10 goehle yeah, if someone has put together a set on that then they might respond
21:10 goehle she's using a pretty standard book, so its not inconceivable
21:10 mgage_ and others might be interested in having problems on such a topic -- they might even help
21:11 mgage_ :-)
21:11 goehle great, thanks
21:11 goehle thats helpful advice
21:17 goehle oh, just out of curiosity
21:17 goehle right now on my list is 1) upgrade essay questions to allow for instructor comments via email
21:18 goehle 2) write a blog post on achievements
21:18 goehle and then a bunch of toher stuff
21:18 mgage_ sounds like a good list :-)
21:18 goehle which do you prefer I get to first?
21:20 mgage_ I think write the blog post -- that will get people using it and hopefully get you some useful feedback.  Jason and I will put gentle pressure on MAA to upgrade to ww2.5.1.1 which is quite stable and will allow courses to use achievements.   essayQuestions are in ww2.5.1.3 so we'll do that next.
21:21 goehle ok, sounds good.  For now I should get to writing a lecture for next week though :)
21:22 mgage_ you can check with Robin Cruz and Rob Beezer for feedback on essayQuestions -- and probably me if I get a chance to use them late in this multivariable calc course I'm teaching.
21:22 mgage_ and I need to grade homework
21:22 mgage_ also write lectures. :-)
21:23 goehle great, yeah, Rob Beezer had given me a bunch of good suggestions last semester before I got swamped
21:23 mgage_ he's using it again this semester (off of hosted2)
21:27 goehle must be a little stable then
21:28 goehle I really need to get a better way of letting professors know there are ungraded questions
21:34 mgage_ there are a bunch of alert features that would be nice to add.  Another would be to make even clearer to students which questions they had completed and which were left undone.
