15:45 aubreyja mgage: hi
15:45 mgage hi
15:46 aubreyja Jason's email about adobe lightroom was interesting
15:47 mgage yes -- I just replied telling him to look at library browser2 -- the gridify mode that I was pushing was based on that analogy
15:47 mgage it didn't work as well as I expected because thumbnails of math problems all look alike
15:47 aubreyja yeah, thumbnails of text are probably less useful than thumbnails of images
15:47 mgage but I think the idea is still worth pursuing -- with just the right implementation it might become attractive -- at least  in some use cases.
15:48 mgage or maybe we should put pictures in all our problems :-)
15:49 mgage anyway it's a good discussion -- and we should get those two features he mentioned implemented soon -- it should not be hard.
15:49 aubreyja true, thumbnail displays of pdf pages, in,preview or adobe reader seem to function reasonably well for helping people find content now that I think about it
15:49 mgage if the hover magnification effect is smooth enough that might work
15:51 mgage My view is that we should get library browser3 polished -- but we shouldn't completely give up on some of the ideas in library browser 2 -- that didn't get tested by enough users -- and it could be that some of its features could be added back in to library browser 3 eventually
15:52 mgage I have to go see what is going on with the email in interlochen -- it's some configuration switch -- can you tell what it is immediately?
15:53 aubreyja haven't seen the emails about it - through RT?
15:54 mgage no -- she sent them to me privately but I think I forwarded one to you last night.  --  just forwarded this mornings follow up emails
15:54 aubreyja let me check - just back in town - I was traveling T-TH
15:55 aubreyja ok, found it - just a sec
15:55 mgage k -- I can probably figure it  out -- but you might see it immediately
15:56 mgage there are two of them,  one from Ann and one from David Bondurant
15:57 aubreyja I think it's a config issue with their smtp server...
15:58 mgage could be -- it's not replying to the right "from" address?
15:59 aubreyja yes, $mail{smtpServer} = '';
15:59 aubreyja in site.conf
16:00 mgage would it do this:    When the student clicks the Email instructor button, the professor does receive the email.  But when the professor tries to reply to that email, then the reply is automatically set to go to webwork@interlochen.org rather than to the student who sent the original email.
16:00 aubreyja I'll bet they have this as webwork@interlochen.org and they aren't using 'localhost' as the smtp server but their school smtp server.
16:01 aubreyja Then I bet the smtp server requires (for security reasons) the from: user to be the same as the smtpSender
16:01 mgage that is very likely -- that has happened before.
16:01 aubreyja so, they have $mail{smtpSender}
16:01 aubreyja = webwork@interlochen.org I mean
16:10 mgage I think you are write -- the from field is filled out from $ce->{mail}{smtpSender}
16:23 mgage aubreyja:  did you look at the discussion at http://help.webworkhelp.com/ ? :-)
16:24 aubreyja having a look...
16:26 aubreyja ...seems pretty time intensive running your own forum…
16:26 mgage I'm trying to remember who is running this -- I think I knew at one point -- it's been going for some time.
16:27 mgage The answers are actually pretty good
16:27 mgage presumably they get the support from the amazon adds
16:27 mgage something to keep in mind
16:28 mgage by the way type in http://www.webstatsdomain.com  and then checkout webworkhelp.com   then check out webwork.maa.org :-)
16:30 mgage or webwork.rochester.edu
16:31 mgage but then for a reality check on $$   look at www.amazon.com :-)
16:54 mgage aubreyja: hi
17:26 aubreyja hi - back
17:27 mgage we're going to have to replace the live.jar java applet soon -- our local sys admin has disabled java
17:28 mgage (I can get him to turn it back on but this is going to happen more frequently)
17:28 aubreyja wow - 98,600 in the world?
17:28 aubreyja yeah, java is in a tough spot
17:28 mgage jason grout has some ideas
17:28 aubreyja worse than flash even :)
17:28 mgage apparently
17:29 mgage but before we get giddy about how much the website is worth look at amazon.  (but also look at wikipedia :-) )   -- all kind of amusing
17:33 mgage I found the reference to webworkhelp.com -- Danny Glin tracked them down last summer -- it's someone operating out of the math department at Riverside.
17:34 mgage Rob Lam -- it's a nice service -- maybe he'd like to come to a west coast code camp.  :-)
17:35 mgage off to lunch
18:01 mgage back
