03:34 Paul_ This is definitely worth checking out for WebWork's future 3d graphics:
03:34 Paul_ http://acko.net/blog/making-mathbox/
03:35 Paul_ And, perhaps we should look at this for 2d graphics:
03:35 Paul_ http://d3js.org/
04:24 rbeezer Paul_: William Stein has been looking at Mathbox for his new Sage interface
04:26 Paul_ Cool.  Only WS, or are others also working with him?
04:34 rbeezer Its a solo project right now - long story - lawyers and money are involved  ;-)
04:38 Paul_ OK.  Last question: is the new interface an update to the existing interface, or is it something totally different (e.g., a standalone interface instead of the web browser interface).

14:46 Tim Hi
14:46 TimA2 joined #webwork
14:47 Tim Has anyone managed to get TiKz to load within a PG problem?

18:49 mgage TimA2: I don't think you can get it to print to the screen (dvi-png doesn't work with tikz)
18:50 mgage I don't know about MathJax.  I think you could get it to print to hardcopy.
18:50 mgage It's basically a stalled project -- we have some idea of how to make it work but no-one has had the time to complete it.
18:50 TimA2 I see
18:51 TimA2 thank you
18:52 mgage the basic blocker is that dvipng can't handle it -- so we'd have to process the tex using dvi output and then process dvi to pdf using ghost script or something like that-- all the tools are there they would just have to be chained together.  Paul Pearson looked at the project briefly and could give you more details.
18:53 TimA2 I have had some success with the picture environment, but only when generating the hard copy pdf version...not the screen version
18:54 mgage that's probably the same or similar difficulty.  We are only using TeX within the formulas  when creating the HTML image
18:55 TimA2 Thank you...At least I don't feel so bad about not making much progress in a single morning
18:57 mgage we'll have to make a special mode to handle tikz.  it's doable -- I can send you the discussions of the plan -- but it will take some modifications to the image generator module of WeBWorK to make it work -- it also means some other external programs such as ghostscript need to be installed.
18:58 TimA2 That would be great!
18:59 TimA2 I'm new to IRC, so...How do you send discussions?
19:00 mgage I'll need an email address -- you can send open to me   gage@math.rochester.edu and forward you the discussion.
19:01 TimA2 I just sent you an email
19:04 TimA2 I must run...but thank you for getting back to me.
19:04 mgage kk
19:05 mgage I haven't gotten the email yet but I'll send you the info once I get it --- I have to run too for a few minutes
19:12 TimA2 My email is tim@unb.ca
19:12 TimA2 Thanks again!

21:05 NavajoTech Hello?
21:08 TimA3 joined #webwork
21:08 mgage hi
21:09 goehle_ joined #webwork
21:09 goehle_ hey mgage
21:09 mgage hi
21:09 NavajoTech Hello
21:10 goehle_ :)
21:10 NavajoTech I was wondering if someone can help me with my webwork server
21:10 mgage we can try -- what is the probelm?
21:10 goehle_ is the setup on hosted2 the same setup that is being sent out everywhere (with regards to the Model Course)
21:10 goehle_ sure
21:10 goehle_ whats your question
21:10 NavajoTech At our school our old webwork server went down when our IT department was checking something
21:10 NavajoTech So I put together a new webwork server (with newer hardware) and started from scratch
21:11 NavajoTech So now I have two webwork servers running
21:11 mgage goehle_: not sure exactly what you mean -- are you talking about the maa courses? or the modelCourse template -- the latter is close to the one in github.
21:11 mgage ok
21:11 NavajoTech I wanted to know if there was a way to export all the courses and problems from the old server and import into the new server?
21:11 mgage yep - it's not that hard.
21:12 NavajoTech OK
21:12 mgage a little time consuming.  What you do is go to the "admin" course   and choose
21:12 NavajoTech Great
21:12 mgage archive courses.
21:12 mgage This packages the courses together in   .tar.gz  files.
21:13 mgage Then manually transfer those files to the new server.  On the new server do "unarchive courses" and you'll get the courses back.
21:13 mgage This packages files and database entries together so you get everything.
21:13 NavajoTech even the problems?
21:13 NavajoTech Because we wrote our own problems as well
21:13 mgage You may be asked to upgrade courses as you archive them -- that's ok
21:14 mgage even the problems if they are stored in the course template directories.
21:14 NavajoTech OK.  That's good to hear
21:14 mgage If you stored the problems in some central location you'll need to transfer those separately.
21:14 mgage the courses are essentially frozen and then transferred -- it has worked pretty well.
21:14 NavajoTech do I just go into the /opt/webwork/libraries folder to get the problems?
21:15 mgage to get the frozen courses go to /opt/webwork/courses
21:15 NavajoTech ok.  It won't be a problem that I am getting courses for a server that was running webwork 2.4 and switching to one that is running webwork 2.5?
21:15 mgage the /opt/webwokr/libraries folder on the new machine should be the same as the one on the old -- so you don't have to transfer that.
21:16 NavajoTech ok.
21:17 mgage probably not (certainly 2.4.9 to  2.5.1.1 is ok )  -- you will need to upgrade the courses either before or after you transfer them (perhaps even both )   -- it's worth transferring a course or two first before you do the whole batch
21:17 NavajoTech I have a final question as well.  I asked this a long time ago, but I still didn't have any luck with this:  Is it possible to use "Gmail" as my smtp server for the email functionality?
21:17 NavajoTech ok.
21:17 TimA3 joined #webwork
21:18 mgage I don't know the answer to that --- there is nothing about webwork that prevents it but you need to configure it to act as an smtp server and accept the send mail requests.
21:19 mgage I don't off hand know someone who has actually done that.
21:19 mgage you could check on the forums.
21:21 NavajoTech Ok.  Is this just the maa.webwork.org forum?
21:21 mgage yes -- the one attached to webwork.maa.org/wiki
21:22 goehle_ mgage - So at some point we had a default set of achievements set up in Model Courses
21:23 mgage yes
21:23 goehle_ looking on hosted2 it looks like you have a slightly older/more archaic TestCourse_Achievements achievements list
21:23 goehle_ I was hoping that that *wasn't* the one that made it to the official 2.5.1.3
21:23 goehle_ 2.5.1.1 rather
21:23 mgage it's possible that is out of date.  -- let me check
21:25 mgage on hosted2 I'm using what is in my repo at    mgage/lwebwork2-dev    branch 2.5.1.3
21:25 mgage that might be out of date in the achievements.
21:27 goehle_ no worries
21:27 goehle_ the only real difference is the default achievements file
21:28 mgage so it's just a file? or a directory -- I'd just as soon get all of these up to date so we don't have stale copier proliferating
21:28 goehle_ yeah
21:28 goehle_ I can help you out with that actually!
21:28 goehle_ http://agora.cs.wcu.edu/~goehle/achievements.html
21:28 goehle_ wait no
21:28 goehle_ http://agora.cs.wcu.edu/~goehle/achievements.tar.gz
21:28 goehle_ that tar file contains the achievements folder that shoudl be located in templates
21:29 mgage ok
21:29 goehle_ http://agora.cs.wcu.edu/~goehle/achievement_icons.tar.gz
21:29 goehle_ has the achievements folder that should be located in html
21:33 NavajoTech Thanks for the help!
21:36 goehle_ ok, so for real this time, I am literally in the process of writing the achievemetn blog post
21:36 goehle_ anything you think I should address?
21:36 goehle_ (sorry its taken so long.  I thought I would have more spare time this semester, but I dont seem to have as much as I thought)
21:37 mgage nope -- just make it sound fun -- refer to your paper.
21:37 mgage I know that feeling
21:37 goehle_ lol, I was going for "instructive"
21:37 goehle_ :)
22:37 mgage goehle_: some of these achievements are attached to specific sets?
22:38 mgage we need to explain how to use these (what modifications need to be made)
22:39 mgage I've added the new achievements but I want to check about modifying the old ones -- are the versions with "SetNameHere" more appropriate? or the ones with e.g. "set33"
