17:44 aubreyja mgage: hi
17:53 mgage aubreyja: hi
17:54 goehle_ hey mgage
17:54 mgage hi -- how are things?  still snowing there?
17:54 goehle_ snow?
17:54 goehle_ its sunny now :)
17:54 goehle_ I got an email from that instructor, Serge, who wanted to use the math achievements
17:55 goehle_ he has sent a couple of emails to
17:55 mgage oooo -- sorry I thought you were jason.  We're getting the midwest storm coming through Rochester now
17:55 goehle_ webwork@maa.org but hasn't gotten any response
17:55 goehle_ ah sure, thats supposed to hit us later maybe
17:56 mgage yeah -- but you'll probably get rain -- let me see what I can see about his emails to webwork@maa.org
17:56 mgage what is his email address?
17:56 goehle_ Serge Ballif <Serge.Ballif@nsc.edu>
17:57 mgage got it -- yeah maa headquarters has not been paying attention.  Let's see if I can give them a nudge.
17:58 goehle_ thanks
17:58 goehle_ :)
18:04 mgage aubreyja: hi
18:16 aubreyja Hi mgage
18:16 aubreyja still digging out here!
18:16 mgage yeah -- we're getting slush "wintery mix" they call it
18:17 aubreyja Rochester probably knows how to handle this sort of thing, Columbia MO not so much
18:17 mgage that's pretty much true -- we groan and then just deal with it.
18:18 aubreyja in the past 7 days my kids have been in school 2 days, I've been at work 2 days and we've had internet at home 2.5 days…(at least we had power for 6 of those days)
18:19 mgage yeah that's good.  My son David complained throughout his middle school/high school career that Brighton never had snow days!! (which was pretty much true)
18:19 mgage he feels he was robbed
18:19 aubreyja yeah, I grew up near chicago, (nw indiana) and we *never* had snow days -
18:20 aubreyja before a couple of years ago chicago hadn't canceled for snow in like 30 years - and that was the approach our schools took too
18:24 aubreyja everything on track for Raleigh?
18:25 mgage I think so.  I'm still mulling over possible projects -- but usually the focus gels at the last minute -- and that probably works out best for getting work done at the workshop.
18:26 mgage I've been making steady progress on my own projects.  I'm trying to start a rule about never accepting one's own pull requests.  I have a bunch of pull requests stacked up on openwebwork.  Think you could find time to look them over and either merge them or comment on them or reject them?
18:27 mgage we also should do something with Djun's pull request -- either fix it or get him to fix it or cancel it (for now)
18:27 aubreyja for the Rserve integration?
18:27 mgage yes
18:29 aubreyja well, it does actually work as an addition to pg - the issues were with his cpan module as I recall and those were fairly minor
18:30 mgage it's also ok with me if you decide to accept it. -- we probably shouldn't just leave it there however.
18:30 aubreyja one question is whether or not we make his rserve perl module a prerequisite or optional...
18:30 aubreyja it's not going to be in any linux package maanger for a while unless Djun makes one for it, so it will always be a cpan install
18:30 mgage if it doesn't use binaries then it's pretty easy to install with cpan and I don't see much downside in requiring it. (space -- but that is not a premium)
18:31 aubreyja it does require having R and Rserve installed
18:31 mgage in that case we should make it optional for WeBWorK.
18:31 aubreyja so, if we make the perl module a prerequisite then we also have to make R and Rserve prereqs probably
18:31 mgage is there a way we can do that?
18:33 aubreyja well, just the way we do now with other programs (like latex for example).  I like the idea of making it optional, but I don't want that to mean it never really gets used
18:33 mgage so that Rserve doesn't automatically get compiled?   if it's not obvious then we should ask Djun to think about it a bit and resubmit it.
18:33 aubreyja well, once you have R installed it's easy to install Rserve via the normal way of installing new R packages
18:33 aubreyja but it does require doing
18:34 mgage that sounds fine.  I just don't want to have flags raised if you install webwork and never use a problem requiring Rserve.   If  you want to use a problem that interacts with R then you have to use cpan or R to install Rserve   -- and that seems fine.
