15:12 mgage goehle_:hi
15:55 goehle_ mgage hey, I'm back
15:55 Tim3 joined #webwork
16:14 mgage goehle_: me too  -- what's up?
16:14 goehle_ I didn't get as much done with webwork over spring break as I wanted but I did do some of that database stuff
16:15 goehle_ I added key=>1 to the past_answers table
16:15 mgage ok
16:15 goehle_ but I had to change the types of the fields to do it
16:15 mgage that's ok.
16:15 mgage I guess I should pull that in to the release/2.7 branch that is being finalized
16:16 goehle_ I was able to use regular mysql stuff to transfer the old database to the new one and things looked find
16:16 goehle_ yeah, definitely
16:16 mgage that will make essay answers available and usable for those who want essay questions
16:16 goehle_ one thing I didn't test
16:16 goehle_ I think if you upgrade with an exsiting database it willc omplain
16:16 goehle_ let me check real quick
16:17 mgage you can go ahead and submit the pull request -- I may let it sit there for a bit until one of use can add some code to the admin page to do an automatic upgrade.
16:18 mgage I'll have some dummy classes on hosted2.webwork.rochester.edu  that I can test it on -- however it may not get done until the weekend since we have midterms this week.
16:18 goehle_ yeah
16:18 goehle_ I just confirmed
16:18 goehle_ if you do the upgrade on something with an existing past answers databse
16:19 goehle_ then webwork gives you errors because the field types changed
16:19 mgage brb
16:21 mgage I'll see what can be done on the admin page to upgrade the table automatically
16:21 goehle_ yeah
16:22 goehle_ I dont know if you can change column types in place in mysql
16:22 goehle_ I  moved the table to a backup table
16:22 goehle_ and then used insert to copy the old table over
16:24 mgage ok -- I do want to make it something that is automatic since lots of users don't know how to use command line mysql tools
16:24 goehle_ I checked the index for the new table
16:24 goehle_ and its got all of the fields appearing in there
16:24 goehle_ although it looks  like they only appear in pairs
16:25 goehle_ that may be working as intended though
16:26 mgage ok -- I'll try it out on the mock big classes I have this weekend.
16:30 mgage afk
16:33 goehle_ kk
16:53 goehle_ I checked with a cs friend
16:54 goehle_ what we did should definitely speed up our queries
17:00 goehle_ hmm
17:01 goehle_ still talking to my cs friend
17:01 goehle_ he seems to think that maybe a global past_answer database isn't such a good idea
17:01 goehle_ and if we made past_answer a native table
17:01 goehle_ then we wouldn't have toc reate migration code
17:01 goehle_ since it would just be created/updated with all the other course tables
17:09 Tim3 joined #webwork
17:13 goehle_ eh, I'm still having a good discussion with him about this stuff
17:13 goehle_ I'll tell you the results when you get back
18:05 goehle_ hey mgage, I have to go in a few so I'm just checking if you are here
19:25 goehle_ hey mgage I'm back
20:05 Tim3 joined #webwork
20:49 goehle_ sorry for the spam, mgage but I'm heading home...
20:49 goehle_ I was talking to the cs guys in my department and getting their advice
20:49 goehle_ they are willing to help out with the database redisign if you wan them too
20:50 goehle_ they also seemed to think that, at least under our current setup, its probably safter to have past_answers as a non-native table
20:50 goehle_ i'll be back on in an hour or two
22:12 goehle_ hey mgage, back
