14:36 aubreyja mgage, mgage_: around?
14:37 mgage_ hi
14:37 aubreyja hi - I figured out how to replace the pot file on Transifex - are recent updates in the one on github?
14:37 mgage_ no -not yet.
14:38 aubreyja it looks like I can just add a url to the file and transfix will automatically update it when we update it on github
14:38 mgage_ I've figured out how to use poedit to scan for new strings -- but one has to be careful when combining it with the original file -- since sometimes strings are deleted
14:38 mgage_ yes -- I saw that
14:39 aubreyja ah, that could be bad
14:39 mgage_ I'm thinking that at least for a while we should not do that -- it would be too easy to lose translation work
14:39 mgage_ for example when I ran the poedit scan last night there were about 200 strings that would have been deleted (200+ new ones added)
14:40 aubreyja yikes, why does it delete them?
14:40 mgage_ I'm not 100% sure of the issue yet, but I noticed that they were deleting some of the menu items on the left
14:41 mgage_ turns out that some of those at least have been named automatically in the code ---- I think make text is processing a variable in that case but not sure
14:41 aubreyja ah, could be.  Wasn't there a command line tool that Grant had used xp...?
14:42 mgage_ apparently Grant He added such entries to the string base by hand (something which Patrick Belley also seems to be doing.  Those strings will be wiped out if you do an automatic update using poedit and the xgettext script that it calls.
14:42 aubreyja that's the one - I see.
14:42 mgage_ not sure of the solution yet -- but it's clear we need to be cautious -- and write down a work flow to follow
14:43 aubreyja right - I'll have a look too and see if I can figure something out
14:45 mgage_ if you look though the code in ContentGenerator.pm  for printing out the instructor links you'll see that some entries have an explicit text => $r->maketext("library browser")  type tag and others (probably older entries such as Statistics) don't have this option.  Here the link text is generated automatically.  "Statistics" is in the source language file  (.pot) but it never appears in a maketext() statement so it is not found by xget
14:46 mgage_ "statistics" is translated -- so I suspect there is  a $r->maketext($link_title) type command somewhere
14:47 mgage_ but I quit at this point and haven't investigated.  For this case we could just add the text => options but I haven't investigated the other reasons for missing strings yet.
14:47 aubreyja hmm, xgettext has a --join-existing option "join messages with existing file"  maybe that would help
14:48 aubreyja I'll check it out
14:48 mgage_ yes -- there is also a msgcat command that does the right thing with two .po or .pot files
14:48 aubreyja ah, have you tried that one?
14:49 mgage_ but if we use the somewhat automated process provided by poedit then we have to be more careful
14:49 aubreyja I suspect we'll have to figure out what the right way to do it is and write a script that does it the right way each time
14:50 mgage_ not this round -- but I used it last time I was on a localization binge and was creating the previous .pot file (or perhaps I told grant to use it ) in any case it does work.
14:51 mgage_ yes -- that's probably best. -- mean time constant updating of the page http://webwork.maa.org/wiki/Instructions_for_creating_language_template_files
14:51 mgage_ on the wiki is in order.
14:51 mgage_ I need to add a few items to how to use poedit to that.
14:51 aubreyja kk- also what's the status of pg localization?  And the german translation?
14:52 mgage_ I think once we understand the situation we can write a script -- and then it makes more sense to have an automatic hook to the transifex site.
14:52 aubreyja right
14:53 mgage_ There are a couple of examples of pg localization in the 2.7 release.  mostly just proof of concept that it works.  there might be more in develop
14:55 mgage_ heiderich has added a bunch of maketext() to the webwork2 side, and I think some to the pg side but I haven't checked that.  He wants to keep the german translating dictionary private for the moment -- I think I forwarded an email to you about that.
14:56 aubreyja I do remember that
14:56 mgage_ maybe not -- I just forwarded it to you again
14:56 mgage_ I think he may not have added much maketext content to the pg side of the code yet.
14:58 mgage_ Barbara margolius got her grant for the webwork PI forum -- did you see the email?
15:00 aubreyja yep, that's great
15:19 mgage_ aubreyja: the search engine seems to be working well again -- thanks
15:19 aubreyja great  - hopefully it's not so fragile now too

22:05 Paul_Pearson mgage There has been recent work on interactive 3d graphics in SAGE using JSMol (a java script 3d engine) that looks most promising as a way to include interactive 3d graphics into WeBWorK.
22:06 Paul_Pearson So, interactive graphics could be created in SAGE and exported to WeBWorK.
22:06 Paul_Pearson :)

22:07 Paul_Pearson The ASCII version using JSMol in the lower right corner on the following webpage is probably what we would want to use in WeBWorK.
22:07 Paul_Pearson http://www.uwosh.edu/faculty_staff/gutow/JSmol_math/JSmol-test4.html
22:09 Paul_Pearson I think that MathBox and Three.js are still great, but writing WeBWorK macros for them may be more work for us and creating interactive 3D graphics using them may (or may not) be easy for problem authors.
22:10 Paul_Pearson Also, I don't think MathBox has the ability for text labels in interactive graphics yet (which is one minus in a sea of pluses).
