18:36 mgage hi
18:51 pstaab joined #webwork
18:51 pstaab mgage: hi Mike
18:52 mgage pstaab:  hi
18:52 pstaab I was able to get onto the devel1 courses no problem.
18:52 pstaab The problem with the pulldown menu is because the new ui tools aren't compatible with the math4 theme.
18:53 mgage I'm using the math3 theme though
18:53 pstaab Is the pulldown not working?
18:55 pstaab I just logged on for the fall10mth164b course and its working for me.
18:57 pstaab I've also been thinking about how to get the Homework Manager and Classlist Manager (and future tools) to be more themeable.
19:00 mgage I'm seeing the menus again at the moment.  It's been a little eratic.  I wonder if some of this might be caching certain old files by the browser.
19:02 mgage most of your libraries should work ok with bootstrap -- it's pretty widely used -- you should consult with Geoff Goehle  he's our current expert on the CSS stuff.
19:02 goehle oh hey mgage
19:02 goehle I had a question
19:03 mgage ha -- so peter probably has questions for you as well.
19:03 goehle sure
19:03 goehle I'll answer as I can
19:03 mgage peter can you change the date on the ww01 homework in fall10math164b?
19:03 pstaab I don't think it's a bootstrap problem (since I use that extensively), unless its a multiple loading of bootstrap.  I think it's a way the template for math4 is written.
19:04 goehle system.template is kind of a mess
19:04 pstaab mgage: using what?
19:04 mgage goehle: I'll answer your question later.
19:04 goehle and loading stuff in the right order is always an issue
19:04 mgage pstaab using the homework manager
19:04 goehle np
19:04 pstaab which view?  There's about 3 different ways to change the date?
19:06 pstaab If you click on a set, you can change the date directly in "Set Details"  or in "View All Sets", which wasn't working, but I just fixed the bug on that.
19:06 mgage kk -- one sec.  I"m going to homework manager (and the website has crashed -- it's been doing that ).  I'll restart it
19:07 mgage I was on the first page -- so probably view all sets
19:07 pstaab I'm going to try to spend some time tomorrow going through all of the various views of the Homework Manager to see the status of everything.
19:08 pstaab BTW, this course is a great test course with ~200 students and a bunch ~50 problem sets.
19:08 mgage steps:  1.  go to homework manager -- Calendar is in the upper left corner 2. click on ww01 underneath calendar
19:09 mgage change each of the open date, due date , answer date.
19:09 pstaab That's the "Set Details" view.
19:09 mgage go back to the beginning of the course and repeat process -- I find that the dates have reverted to their original values
19:10 pstaab I'm not getting a response.  I'll take a look at it.  I think I'll try to roll back to a commit before I did that merge by mistake.  I'm guessing there's old code floating around.
19:11 mgage that would be my guess.   -- I'm getting response from the server now, but I've had it crash several times.
19:11 pstaab I'm getting similar results on my local machine too.
19:12 pstaab I'll spend some time on this and trying to solidify up some of the code.
19:13 pstaab Also, I think the recent changes to handle large class lists has been working fairly well.  I've been getting reasonable load times and then quick responses within the page.
19:13 mgage kk -- I have devel1 set up to pull from your github so whatever you push to their I can put up on devel1 if you send me an email.
19:14 mgage yes -- I'm seeing much better behavior on large classes and collections of homework sets.  I think that part is much improved.
19:14 pstaab Sounds good.  I'll try to get some things ironed out by tomorrow.
19:14 mgage kk
19:14 mgage goehle:  what was your question?
19:15 goehle i'm leaning towards making mathjax required for the latest iteration of mathveiew
19:15 goehle it was already used for the instantaneous previewing
19:15 goehle and the existing images look ugly
19:15 goehle it will be prettier if I can use mathjax on them to render them in engin
19:26 mgage I think that's probably ok.  Does this make something easier?  If it's not a lot of extra trouble I try to keep the dvipng option active as well.
19:26 goehle its not something thats passing through pg
19:26 goehle right now the "icons" for the various expressions you can enter
19:26 goehle are stored as .gifs
19:26 goehle but they look ugly
19:27 goehle since mathjax already has to be loaded in order for the instantaneous previewing to work
19:27 goehle I figured I woudl leverage it to make prettier function names for the buttons
19:27 goehle also
19:27 goehle sin^(-1)
19:27 goehle asin
19:27 goehle or arcsin
19:27 goehle ?
19:28 mgage I see -- that sounds fine to me.  As you say if you are not using mathjax you can't really get math view to function.
19:28 mgage did you follow the discussion on mathdox on the development list?  just making sure you are aware of that.
19:29 goehle i did follow it
19:29 goehle at the end of the day, I decided that mathview prepares students to enter in the usual calculator form
19:30 goehle where as if they learn mathdox then they have to keep using mathdox
19:30 mgage I'm fine with following more than one track.  and you make a good point.
19:31 goehle there was a long way to go with mathdox
19:31 mgage It's also possible that we can add a TI calculator notation output engine to mathdox   at some point.
19:32 mgage sounds fine to me.  I'm glad you are working on improving mathview
19:33 mgage I'm going to get in touch with JP Gravelle also.  MathView was made under his direction and then kind of given to us.  I'll see if he'd like us to push some of the changes we make back to him.
19:34 goehle i'm integrating it with webwork pretty heavily
19:34 goehle and there are some radical cahnges
19:35 goehle any recommendations on using either sin^{-1} notation
19:35 goehle or arcsin notation
19:35 goehle for the editor?
19:36 ChanServ joined #webwork
19:39 mgage I think sin^[-1] -- I haven't seen arcsin that much in the last few years.

20:04 goehle is there an easy way to check if mathjax is present from inside perl?
20:32 mgage not one that I know of -- Davide would know for sure.  You can check displayMode to see if mathjax is being used -- but that is not the same thing.
