15:57 goehle hey mgage
15:58 mgage goehle: hi
15:58 goehle One of my instructors was asking if we had changed pg
15:58 goehle and he was saying he used to do exponents like this
15:58 goehle 35^x^-^1
15:58 goehle for 35^{x-1}
15:59 goehle was that originally how it worked?
15:59 mgage no on purpose
15:59 mgage not on purpose
15:59 goehle ok
15:59 goehle so he was making use of an "unintended feature"
16:00 mgage yes -- an unintended feature of either MathJax or MathObjects and perhaps both
16:00 mgage I'm not sure that will even work in TeX, although I could be wrong about that -- I never tried.
16:02 goehle I got your email about the coding camp
16:03 goehle the best time for me is either the 4,5,6 or 11,12,13
16:03 mgage I'm just floating dates at the moment -- I want to concentrate this one on getting Classmanager and Homeworkmanager ready for prime time (javaScript) and getting a solid API for the backend webservice which will support this.    Would you be interested?
16:03 goehle I have fall break from the 5th through the 13th
16:04 goehle I would be interested
16:04 mgage kk -- I've got that in mind.  Hopefully I can get things set up this week.
16:04 goehle since I don't know much about how the new classlistmanager and homeworkmanager work
16:04 goehle however, I also dont know much about either of those
16:04 mgage you do know a lot about javaScript and CSS which is a help.
16:05 goehle It seems like the webservice will be important because we will most likely use the same (or close to the same) api for the webservice and webwork3
16:05 mgage yes -- getting classlistmanager and homeworkmanager ready for prime time is essentially webwork3 as far as I'm concerned.
16:06 goehle especially if we manage to do it modular like
16:06 goehle then the new webwork3 backend can be pulled in later
16:06 mgage yep -- I want to do it that way if at all possible because then it will get tested in pieces
16:07 goehle I would suggest that if we do more js reorganization we leave the existing structure there for the current ui
16:07 goehle and just make a new js root directory for classlistmanager and homeworkmanager
16:07 mgage a  more solid API for a webservice will have lots of advantages for anything new that is added.
16:07 goehle yeah
16:07 goehle getting it working with a "Problem.pm" page would be good
16:08 goehle that would force all of the important bits to be in place
16:08 goehle and then other things can be added on
16:08 mgage yes.  something like that is already being used -- but it's kind of in an awkward stage between new and old due to keeping backward compatibility
16:09 mgage actually the LibraryBrowser1  is doing the best job of using the webservice at the moment.
16:09 mgage the most important problem there at the moment is improving the webservice authentication feature so that it is more robust.
16:10 goehle I like it too.  Adding problems to sets is much more dynamic now
16:10 mgage yes -- and it makes a good bar that things like LibraryBrowser3 or Homeworkmanager will have to surpass in order to be ready for prime time.
16:11 goehle is that the same authentication that would be used sitewide
16:11 goehle ?
16:12 mgage not necessarily -- with widespread use we need some means of making sure that requests to the webservice are trusted -- otherwise we are open to massive DNS attacks or worse.
16:12 goehle ah
16:12 goehle so this is more like site authentication
16:12 goehle than user authentiation
16:12 mgage up until a year ago the password was hard coded, but at the moment I have it tied into the authentication method for the course -- but I didn't do it perfectly -- it needs some improvement.
16:13 mgage yes -- currently it is done by doing user authentication -- so the user has to be enrolled in the course -- but site authentication is what is really needed.
16:14 mgage as I said it can use some work.
16:17 goehle student
16:18 mgage ttyl
16:35 goehle ok back
16:36 goehle keep me in the loop for the coding camp
16:36 goehle and I'll ask Naomi how she feels about it :)
16:36 goehle (also I think I will give those two talks at the JMM)
