14:15 goehle hey mgage
14:15 goehle http://webwork.wcu.edu/webwork2/TestCourse/
14:15 goehle could you click on that
14:16 goehle I'm trying to see if its accessible from off campus
14:17 mgage it was yesterday -- I clicked on it when you posted it on elance.  I can't seem to get it today
14:18 goehle this is a different server
14:18 goehle a more permanent set up
14:18 goehle but it looks like its not accessible off campus
14:18 goehle hmm
14:18 goehle well its IT's problem this time
14:18 goehle I'll let them know
14:19 mgage I'm being pushed to time warner's search mechanism when I enter that url
14:19 goehle yeah
14:20 goehle it sounds like the address is not being push to DNS servers
14:20 goehle try 152.30.23.25
14:20 goehle or http://152.30.23.25/webwork2
14:20 mgage nope -- it can't find that either
14:21 goehle ok so then its an ip thing
14:21 goehle it must be behind our firewall.
14:21 goehle thanks for testing
14:21 goehle I'm off to class
14:21 goehle ttyl
14:21 mgage that's what it looks like -- I'm getting the behavior I get when I try to get to an ip behind a firewall
14:21 mgage ttyl
14:22 mgage I'm writing up John's recommendation then trying to catch up on my abstracts for Jason -- write, write write

17:37 aubreyja goehle ping
17:40 goehle hey
17:42 aubreyja hey - which debian were you using? And, are you installing master or development?
17:43 mgage aubreyja: I'll add Sage stuff to the applet chapter
17:43 mgage Do we need an installation chapter for the MAA notes?
17:44 aubreyja great - yeah, I was thinking about doing that
17:44 mgage_ joined #webwork
17:45 goehle I'm using the latest debian
17:45 goehle I was installing master, but the error happened well before that
17:45 goehle It must be some sort of usage thing I'm doing wrong.
17:46 aubreyja maybe not - it looks like the 'unzip' command didn't exit.  Were you using a desktop installation or server installation?
17:46 goehle although its strange
17:47 goehle after I try to run install_webwork.sh
17:47 goehle it has that error
17:47 aubreyja didn't exist
17:47 goehle andthen install_webwork.sh vanishes
17:47 goehle I think it must download something and then overwrite somethign
17:47 goehle server installation
17:47 aubreyja yeah, it's not unziping the archive and then it cleans itself up on exit
17:47 goehle ah
17:47 goehle ok, well that would explain why it works now
17:47 aubreyja ah, good - I've only been testing desktop installations. I'll bet unzip is installed on desktops but not servers
17:47 goehle unzip gets installed with lots of other stuff when prerequisite runs
17:48 goehle when you install debian server it gives you a list of things to install
17:48 goehle I only selected ssh
17:48 goehle which means that it ended up being pretty minimal
17:48 aubreyja ok, good info - I'm going to do a server install now and see what I need to add
17:48 goehle kk
17:48 aubreyja probably the similar for ubuntu server
17:49 goehle probably
17:49 goehle come to think of it it was basically the same error
17:49 goehle maybe use .tar.gz
17:49 goehle I cant imagine that those done come with a server installation
17:49 goehle even a minimal one
17:49 goehle I could be wrong though
17:49 aubreyja well, it's downloading the archive from github which only gives the option for zip I think
17:50 aubreyja yeah, I thought gzip was in coreutils...
17:51 aubreyja can I extract a plain .zip archive with tar?
17:55 mgage joined #webwork
17:56 aubreyja ha, ha - looks like coreutils comes with a bunch of .gz files but no g(un)zip...

18:19 goehle bahahaha
18:20 goehle what about having it use git
18:20 goehle I mean, I have to have git installed to get ww_install in the first place
18:36 aubreyja git is installed with install_prerequisites - I don't want to require them to have it on a fresh system.  I can get tarballs from github though.
18:37 goehle well
18:37 goehle how are you expecting them to get webwork_install.sh then?
18:37 aubreyja wget or curl
18:37 aubreyja or fetch
18:37 goehle ah I see
18:37 goehle hmm
18:37 aubreyja one of those comes on nearly all systems
18:38 goehle thats sticker
18:38 goehle I could make a case for using git.  They need to be a little comfortable with it so they can actually upgrade/update their servers
18:38 goehle but I see where you are coming from
18:38 goehle what about a self extracting .sh
18:39 goehle I've seen .sh files that come with all of the files built into the .sh file
18:39 goehle the mathematica installer comes to mind
18:39 aubreyja interesting...
18:39 aubreyja lemme google that
18:40 aubreyja http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1005818
18:45 goehle there you go
19:15 mgage joined #webwork
19:25 aubreyja goehle - did you choose ssh and 'Standard system utilities' or just 'SSH Server'?
19:25 goehle I honestly dont remember.  I would go with just ssh server because its not like it will break if they have stuff already instaleld
19:26 goehle (I probably did do standard system utilities though)
19:26 aubreyja f-it. I'm going with NOTHING extra!!!!!
19:27 goehle next you will have to get an installation script that works for linux from scratch
19:27 goehle first compile gcc ....
19:27 aubreyja This script is going to work with just a kernel and a power source
19:27 goehle :D
