19:25 goehle hey mgage
21:25 mgage goehle: hi
21:29 shdw_work at this pace, I'll be old before this conversation gets past "How's the weather" :-)
21:38 mgage shdw_work: that’s the chance you take with these chat rooms :-)
21:39 shdw_work *gasp* you mena not everyone is sitting on the edge of their seat waiting for the next tidbit of conversation?!?
21:41 mgage well not this time of year  midterm/finals  Ã¢â‚¬â€ we’re too busy to be bored.
21:41 mgage how are things going at IU
21:41 shdw_work probably explains why I've been getting so many "whats my password" emails for webwork today.
21:42 shdw_work I'm actually at CU
21:42 shdw_work going good except for this sudden snow again.
21:42 mgage students are on a shorter time cycle — just means that their weekly assignment is due.
21:43 shdw_work I think we're all ready to push 2.8 for the Summer, and so far everybody likes the new student progress page I set up.  We'll see how it goes in actual use though.
21:44 shdw_work oh I know for a fact a lot of these students are panicing at the end of the semester and thinking they can just sign in and catch up on all the assignments they've ignored
21:45 mgage sounds good.  Ã¢â‚¬â€ there’s work being done on an ajax interface for release over the summer (WW3)
21:45 mgage you have a double at IU hence the mistake (Google is not perfect apparently)
21:45 shdw_work and by the way, thank you for the excellent class logging...  already had a student this semester claiming that webwork "forgot" all of her answers to several assignments.
21:46 mgage yes.   — although you have to know what you are doing to pull that info out from the logs
21:46 mgage there have been requests to make it easier to access for profs that aren’t quite as competent at IT procedures.  Ã¢â‚¬â€ it’s a nice idea but I don’t know when we’ll get to it.
21:47 shdw_work yeah but it was easy enough to grep by username and see that the logs exactly matched which assignments webwork showed the user had actually attemtped
21:47 shdw_work hmm that's probably a good idea
21:47 mgage another idea is to make more robust data collection of how students are doing their homework and apply some of these big data techniques to see if we can understand the situation better — that’s probably when a more user friendly log will be created.
21:48 mgage another project for the summer
21:48 mgage (maybe — if we get to it :-) )
21:48 shdw_work which summer? ;-)
21:49 mgage this summer as a start — mostly in terms of making it easier to get the data collected — and ideally shared across schools
21:49 mgage analysis is for the future. :-)
21:49 mgage I guess I mean data extracted — it’s collected now but not necessarily in convenient formats.
21:50 mgage we had 70’s temperature today — but we get snow tomorrow in Rochester. that’s what happens in April
21:52 shdw_work Same here in Colorado... 70's through the weekend, then 30's yesterday and today.  I put some new minnows in the pond Thursday. I bet they are not happy!
21:53 mgage as long as it doesn’t freeze over
21:53 shdw_work yeah ground temp doesn't change that fast
21:54 mgage ok — it’s time for me to pack up and go home here.  Looks like I’ll have to find out what Geoff wanted later.
21:54 mgage ttyl
21:54 shdw_work see ya tomorrow
22:30 goehle hey mgage
22:30 goehle back
22:31 goehle I'll be on tomorrow as well.  I'm starting on my project and wanted to ask a question or two
22:33 shdw_work all right, heading home
