14:58 goehle hey mgage/mgage_
15:01 shdw_work *sigh* I might not have any classes using webwork after this semester
15:01 goehle switching over to a commerical system?
15:01 shdw_work yeah, they got sucked into webassign
15:02 shdw_work really good student help built in, but it costs the students extra and I don't like not having access
15:03 goehle Yeah, its nice being able to tweak the system and whatnot.
15:03 goehle Now you will just have to call tech support
15:04 shdw_work yeah the students love that part... here's the email to contact if you have trouble... oh I can't help you, you actually need to call this number...
15:05 goehle hopefully they get more polish
15:06 shdw_work I've been told they're building a new interface.  Webwork is really smooth to work with from my end, while webassign has options scattered all over the page and I can never find what I need.
15:07 shdw_work the one thing I do like about webassign is I can build a 'master' course, then create all the sections from it, and if an assignment date changes I can just update the master and that is propagated to all the sections.
15:08 goehle yeah, I suppose the WW way of doing that would be just to have the one course
15:08 goehle but then you have courses with thousands of students and it can be unwieldy
15:08 shdw_work which is how we were using it
15:09 shdw_work our biggest course was usually just under 1000 students
15:09 goehle at one point there was a hidden feature where you could limit visibility of sections to certain instructors
15:09 goehle so they would only see students from their section
15:09 shdw_work oh nice
15:10 shdw_work there's definitely benefits of both methods from an admin standpoint
15:11 goehle yeah.  As webwork is set up now that is tough since courses are very separate things, with different folders and database tables and everything.
15:11 shdw_work how do you transfer a student if you have each section as a separate course?
15:12 goehle you dont, which is a real issue.
15:12 shdw_work ah
15:12 shdw_work probably why we always kept all sections under a single course :-)
15:12 goehle at some point when we find time/funds/whatever we want to redo the database and one of the things is to make students independent from a particular course
15:43 shdw_work oh goody... graduation on Friday, and apparently summer classes start on Monday.  Wish someone had told me so I could get the new courses set up.

20:45 Jia Hi there, I am experimenting with WeBWork and hoping to use it at our school starting from next semester. I encountered a little problem and I can't figure out how to resolve after reading the wiki online. When I try to add a problem from the OPL directory into a specified problem set, the set is always empty. I have to manually copy the path of the problem in editing mode. I'd appreciate if someone can let me know how to fix this.
20:50 goehle Hi jia,
20:50 Jia Hi
20:50 goehle it sounds like the javascript component of the library browser isn't working
20:51 goehle what version are you running?
20:51 Jia Ok, I am running 2.10.
20:52 Jia Thanks for helping me, geohle!
20:52 goehle dont thank me yet
20:52 goehle this particular issue is squirrely and can be hard to track down on various systems
20:52 goehle on the library browser page go to the url and change setmaker to setmaker_nojs
20:53 goehle sorry
20:53 goehle setmakernojs
20:53 goehle (all one word)
20:53 goehle this is the older version of the library browser
20:53 goehle see if that works for you
20:54 Jia mm... I am not quite sure where is the 'library browser page' and the 'url'.
20:55 goehle under instructor tools click library browser
20:55 goehle the url is the web address in the browser
20:55 Jia Uh, I see, I will try now.
20:59 Jia Great! It worked! I think the <update> helped.  How do I proceed from here?
20:59 goehle well
20:59 goehle go back to library browser
20:59 goehle choose a subject
20:59 goehle are you able to choose a chapter?
21:00 Jia No.
21:00 Jia I used the <OPL directory> button
21:00 goehle go to the Open Problem Library
21:00 goehle button
21:00 goehle and try there
21:01 Jia I tried with the <open Problem Library>, it seems that whichever subject I choose, I will not be able to select a chapter.
21:01 goehle do you have access to a console on your server?
21:02 Jia yes, I do.
21:02 goehle coudl you tell me what is printed in your apache2 error log
21:04 Jia Could you tell me where is the error log located?
21:04 goehle /var/log/apache2
21:04 goehle or /var/log/httpd
21:04 goehle depending on what distro you are using
21:08 Jia I found it. There are like 40 ish lines in total. Here is the most recent log:
21:08 Jia [Tue May 05 11:56:39 2015] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down [Tue May 05 11:56:39 2015] [notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec) [Tue May 05 11:56:39 2015] [notice] Digest: generating secret for digest authentication ... 21:08 goehle I'm going to need more than that, I think.
21:08 goehle Could you put it in a pastebin?
21:09 Jia mm... how do I put it in a pastebin?
21:09 goehle http://pastebin.com/
21:09 goehle if server admin isnt really your thing
21:09 goehle you might try looking at a hosted webwork option
21:09 goehle you can get a free course via the MAA
21:10 goehle http://forms.maa.org/r/webworktrial/add.aspx
21:12 Jia Thanks for your suggestion. I'm an intern so I am still trying to figure stuff out.
21:14 Jia If you know there are tutorials or books that I should looked at in order to make server admin my thing, I'd happy to try :)
21:14 Jia Here is the pastebin: http://pastebin.com/s9Q8FHjC
21:16 goehle You could try this:  http://www.maa.org/programs/faculty-and-departments/prep-workshops/schedule/becoming-a-successful-webwork-system-administrator
21:17 goehle hmm
21:17 Jia Thank you very much
21:17 goehle I dont see any error messages in your log about the library browser
21:17 goehle what internet browser are you using?
21:18 Jia firefox
21:18 goehle on your library browser page right click anywhere and click inspect element
21:18 goehle then click on the network tab in the developer area that pops up
21:19 goehle then reload the page
21:19 Mike joined #webwork
21:21 Jia There seems to be no errors on loading js. There are a bunch of warnings.
21:22 goehle in the network tab
21:22 goehle when you click on something in subject
21:22 goehle some lines called
21:22 goehle instructorXMLHandler should appear at the bottom of the list
21:22 goehle click on one of them and then click on preview
21:23 goehle this is another way to get information about  errors
21:24 Jia I got this : "Can't locate object method "ssl_opts" via package "SOAP::Transport::HTTP::Client" at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/SOAP/Lite.pm line 483."
21:24 Jia Should I paste the call stack for you?
21:25 goehle yeah that looks like https://github.com/openwebwork/webwork2/issues/567
21:25 goehle try installing LWP:Protocol::https
21:25 goehle you can do
21:25 Jia Ok.
21:25 goehle sudo cpan LWP::Protocol::https
21:28 Jia Ok, I finished that
21:28 goehle try your browser again
21:28 goehle hopefully it will work
21:32 Jia Unfortunately, the error does not go away. However, I feel the 'LWP::Protocal::https' may not be properly installed. It took less than a second and there is not indication of completion.
21:32 Jia [jia@Mellon ~]$ sudo cpan LWP::Protocol::https CPAN: Storable loaded ok (v2.20) Going to read '/root/.cpan/Metadata'
21:32 goehle oh yeah
21:32 goehle thats an issue
21:32 goehle it should take longer
21:32 goehle what distro do you have?
21:33 Jia Centos 6.6
21:33 Jia Red Hat?
21:34 goehle sudo yum install perl-Crypt-SSLeay
21:34 goehle try that
21:37 Jia Well, the installation is good. But I reload the page and clicked the "InstructorXMLhandler" and <preview>. The message is still there. Should I restart something?
21:37 Jia Can't locate object method "ssl_opts" via package "SOAP::Transport::HTTP::Client" at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/SOAP/Lite.pm line 483.
21:37 goehle you should probably restart the http server
21:42 Jia Ok, I restarted the server. The error still didn't go away..  I received this "httpd: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for Mellon httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName"
21:42 goehle I think thats different
21:42 Jia ok.
21:42 goehle maybe its the wrong package
21:42 goehle try
21:43 goehle sudo yum install perl-LWP-Protocol-https
21:43 goehle thats techincally for redhat, but maybe you have it too.
21:43 Jia I don't have that package
21:43 goehle yeah
21:43 goehle then you are going to have to get the cpan method to work
21:44 Jia You mean, the cpan LWP::Protocol::https CPAN: Storable right?
21:44 goehle just try doing
21:44 goehle sudo cpan
21:44 Jia ok, i am in, then?
21:45 goehle install LWP::Protocol::https
21:45 Jia Ah, it worked.
21:46 Jia ok, let me test if the error goes away...
21:48 Jia No, it doesn't ...
21:48 goehle thats too bad
21:48 goehle I'm sure you ahve the problem at the issue I had above
21:48 goehle since it was the same error with centos 6.6
21:48 Jia Yes, I agree.
21:49 Jia Well, it's okay, I will definitely let my boss know and I will discuss with him what to do next. I couldn't thank you enough for your time and your help.
21:50 goehle np
21:50 goehle I'll ask the other user if they did something else which helped them fix it
