12:25 kkeithley My (first) inclination would be to suggest installing community packages. In in the above case from the CentOS Storage SIG.
12:27 kkeithley If someone is determined to build from source and they don't have the requisite skills, there are better places to go to learn those skills IMO
12:27 misc yup, but now, maybe the problem is because it wasn't clear tothem from the website that there is packages
12:27 misc too bad they left, we may never know
12:28 kkeithley Every release announcement we make tells where to get the packages.
12:29 kkeithley And someone could take a hint and fix the website ;-)

12:29 Esiwir hi all
12:31 Esiwir if possible i need some help to tune gluster for improve my readdir performance, i have a volume in replica 2 nodes 1 arbiter, but the first access from an ls take a lot of time
12:31 Esiwir ~20/30 sec
12:31 kkeithley And I dunno, he found the sources to (try to build from); the packages are right there with the source tarball.
12:32 kkeithley s/packages/packages or READMEs/
12:32 glusterbot What kkeithley meant to say was: And I dunno, he found the sources to (try to build from); the packages or READMEs are right there with the source tarball.

12:34 kkeithley Esiwir: what version of glusterfs?  Bonus points for telling us what (linux version) you're running on.

12:35 Esiwir on ubuntu 16.04
12:36 Esiwir package from gluster ppa
12:37 kkeithley I can never remember when parallel readdir went in. You might give 3.12 or 3.13 a try (on a test rig if necessary) and see if it's still a problem there
12:37 * kkeithley goes to look at release notes
12:38 Esiwir performance.parallel-readdir            off
12:38 Esiwir from gluster volume get all
12:38 Esiwir it is the default...
12:38 masber joined #gluster
12:38 kkeithley yup
12:39 Esiwir i tried to turn it on with few results... :(
12:39 kkeithley okay
12:39 Esiwir but maybe in successive release it works well
12:39 kkeithley how many files in the directory?
12:39 Esiwir ~10000
12:41 Esiwir but they are big files if it can help you.
12:43 misc size of file shouldn't matter much as far as I understand gluster and FS
12:43 misc (at least not for readdir)
12:44 Esiwir misc i think u are right but, i will try to give much information i can for now ;)
12:44 misc Esiwir: yeah, that's usually a good idea

15:33 kkeithley ammad: what do you mean by "one endpoint" ?
15:37 ammad kkeithley : mean that, I want to mount this end point on client to avoid any lagging if in case primary node goes down.
15:40 kkeithley gluster doesn't have a "primary node".  If it's a "replica 3" volume the lookup is sent to all three. For read() the first to reply is the  one the client reads from
15:40 kkeithley if it's a write(), the writes go to all the nodes that are up.
15:41 kkeithley If it's a distribute volume and one node is not up it'll write to a node that is up and heal later
15:41 ammad 2 replica, 1 arbiter in my scenario, session and logs will be write to dist volume
15:43 kkeithley a replica 2 + arbiter works the same way
15:43 kkeithley there is no "primary node"
15:44 ammad I have mounted nodaA, on same time I have run bonnie++ test and shut down nodeA. What I found, bonniee file creation was stuck around 1 min and then start write on other nodes after that.
15:44 glusterbot ammad: bonnie's karma is now 11
15:44 kkeithley yes, there's a 42 second "ping timeout" when a node goes down like that.
15:44 ammad Ahaan
15:45 kkeithley @ping
15:45 glusterbot pong
15:45 kkeithley @timeout
15:45 glusterbot kkeithley: I do not know about 'timeout', but I do know about these similar topics: 'ping-timeout'
15:45 kkeithley @ping-timeout
15:45 glusterbot kkeithley: The reason for the long (42 second) ping-timeout is because re-establishing fd's and locks can be a very expensive operation. With an average MTBF of 45000 hours for a server, even just a replica 2 would result in a 42 second MTTR every 2.6 years, or 6 nines of uptime.
15:45 ammad Right!
15:45 ammad Need to set volume timeout
15:45 ammad got it.
15:46 kkeithley don't set it too low. There's a reason why the default is 42sec
15:46 kkeithley IIRC JoeJulian has a blog post on the subject
15:46 ammad What I'm doing here, replace NFS server to reduce single point of failure
15:46 ammad Right, I'll go through it. 10 sec would be fine, right?
15:47 ammad Or any sincere suggestion in this regard?
15:47 kkeithley That seems very short
15:48 phlogistonjohn joined #gluster
15:48 bluenemo joined #gluster
15:49 ammad I will test timeout 20 sec, and check the consequences.
15:49 ammad Any reported issue to set it low?
15:50 ammad @kkeithley
15:51 kkeithley there are definitely issues with setting it too low. Mainly performance. JoeJulian can give you some guidance about it
15:52 ammad @JoeJulian ?
15:55 timg__ joined #gluster
15:55 ammad kkeithley: that's why I want to make 1 end point of 3 nodes to avoid 42 sec or you may say avoid a sec delay.

19:25 vbellur khaije1: gluster-block is what we consider as a mainline feature now.
19:39 khaije1 wooohooo!!
19:44 khaije1 vbellur: couple follow up questions, (1) do the docs at that link look up to date enough to guide a PoC effort, and (2) any notion of what I could/should expect performance-wise?
19:49 vbellur khaije1: the docs should be mostly good for a PoC. Lot of our testing has been with containers and there are ongoing performance improvements that I am aware of. Generally speaking gluster-block provides better performance for workloads that perform a lot of metadata & directory operations.
19:50 vbellur khaije1: gluster-block is still work in progress.. I would recommend adequate testing before deploying in prod.
20:00 khaije1 much obliged vbellur :)
